Disney’s Mulan Replaces The Lion King During Segerstrom Center’s Movie Mondays on July 22

Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ free Movie Mondays will now present Disney’s Academy Award-nominated animated feature Mulan on July 22. Mulan replaces The Lion King, previously announced for this year’s Movie Mondays. Celebrating the 15th year of its release, Mulan is based on a Chinese legend about the only daughter of an aged warrior. To protect him and to save their family’s honor, the highspirited heroine disguises herself as a man and takes her father’s place in the army. Along with her guardian dragon Mushu, her captain, Li Shang, a lucky cricket, Cri-kee, and her companions, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po, Mulan battles the invading Hun army. With characters voiced by Eddie Murphy, Ming-Na Wen and Harvey Fierstein, and featuring songs by Broadway stars Donny Osmond and Lea Salonga, Mulan is the uplifting tale of the strength and bravery that lies in all of us. Patina Catering’s special Mulan themed menu includes: • Vegetable egg rolls and chicken pot stickers with soy and sweet chili dipping sauce (6 pieces): $5 • Grilled chicken bánh mi, pickled carrot, cucumber, cilantro jalapeño aioli: $4 • Hand-scooped ice cream sandwich: $3

the history of the orange county fair

Editorial offices: 23472 Vista Del Verde, Suite 6 Coto de Caza, CA 92679-3930 949-589-9990 To send a press release: newseditorials@yahoo.com

Shortly after Orange County was created in 1889, the Orange County Community Fair Corporation was formed. This group put on a small fair in 1890 that included a horse race and a few exhibits in Santa Ana. In 1894, another group, the Orange County Fair Association, Inc., took over

The first Orange County Fairs were primarily livestock exhibitions and horse races. At the turn of the century, a “carnival of products” was added and the Fair became an annual event. In ensuing years, the Fair was held in Santa Ana, but after World War I it was moved to Huntington Beach for two years and then back to temporary grounds on East Fruit Street in Santa Ana. In 1916, the Fair was taken over by the newly organized Orange County Farm Bureau. The first OC Fair Board was elected in 1925 and the Fair relocated to Anaheim, across the street from the Orange County Hospital. In 1925, a rodeo and carnival were added to the Fair.

OC Fair Clowns After World War II, the state formed the 32nd District Agricultural Association and made it responsible for the Fair. The state then purchased land occupied by the Santa Ana Army Air Base and some of it was earmarked for a new fairground. The Fair was first held at the new site in 1949 and it soon was designated as the permanent Fairgrounds. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa was incorporated - the new city included the Fair’s location. From 1949 to the present, the OC Fair has grown from a small, community, fiveday celebration to a 23-day festival that is one of Orange County’s most eagerly awaited annual events.

the history of the Sawdust festival The Sawdust was originally called the Laguna Artists and Gallery Owners Association after breaking away from the Festival of Arts in 1965, in protest of that show’s jurying system. That first festival was located on a vacant lot at the bottom of Park Avenue (on the Peacock lot) with only a few dozen exhibitors. It was called the ‘Rejects Festival’ by the media. There was no show in 1966, but the show did reappear, with more exhibitors, in 1967 on an empty lot on North Coast Highway (The Kronquist lot). That show was a great success and led to the artists moving to its current location on Laguna Canyon Road, leasing the property from Walter and Dorothy Funk, and when the artists spread sawdust

on the ground to combat the dust and mud, the media called it the ‘Sawdust Festival,’ and that name has identified the show for decades. Looking for room to expand, in 1968 the show moved to its present three-acre site at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, welcoming one and all with the promise to educate the public as well as provide a sales outlet for unrestricted art.Today, artists demonstrate their art in designated “demo” booths where the public is invited to participate, as well as working in their own booths. The lovely eucalyptus grove with its rippling waterfall provides an irresistible background.

One of the first facades ~1978~ other art shows, visualizing itself as an artists’ “happening” rather than a stuffy exhibit. To that end, the artists themselves build a unique village of individual booths from the ground up each summer. The architectural designs are as varied and interesting as the work they showcase. Once the booths are finished, the sawdust goes down, the landscaping goes in, music fills the air and once again the Sawdust Art Festival magically returns for another summer. It is truly a unique experience in the arts that brings visitors back year after year.

The Sawdust Art Festival is truly a local event. All artists exhibiting in the festival are residents of Laguna Beach. Unlike some other non-profit organizations dedicated to the arts, the Sawdust Art Festival’s administration is made up of exhibiting members. Each year, exhibiting artists are elected as members of the Board of Directors. In addition, booth locations are determined by an annual lottery, usually held in February. Because the show is non-juried, enthusiastic amateurs display their work along with accomplished veteran artists, providing the spice and variety that make every To get more information on the Sawdust Festival show different from the last. visit: sawdustartfestival.org In keeping with the spirit of its beginnings, the Sawdust Art Festival intends to be different from

Are You Ready for Ribs? When it’s time to fire up the grill, go beyond the bun this season with succulent pork ribs. Armed with these juicy tips and a great recipe, you’ll be ready to grill with the best – and that could mean big prizes for you. The Rib Basics Need a rundown on ribs? The National Pork Board has the tips and tricks you need to know to take your grilling game to the next level: Back ribs originate from the blade and center section of the pork loin, which is known for the “finger meat” between the bones. Back ribs also are referred to as “baby” back ribs because they are smaller than spareribs. Spareribs, usually larger and heavier than back ribs, are known for their delicious, meaty pork flavor. Dry rubs are a mixture of herbs and spices applied to ribs just before barbecuing to create an intensely flavorful, smoky crust. Ribs are often basted with sauces during the barbecuing process to enhance flavor and to create a sweet and savory glaze. For best results, brush ribs generously during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Always use tongs, not a fork, to turn ribs as they cook – piercing the meat causes juices to escape. When grilling ribs, adding aromatic wood chips like hickory, apple or oak to the preheated coals infuses the meat with the distinctive smoky flavor prized in authentic barbecue. Think you have a winning rib recipe? Enter the “Dibs on My Ribs Pork Recipe Cookoff.” Visit www.porkbeinspired.com/dibsonmyribs and enter your original sparerib recipe before August 12, 2012. All entries must use a minimum of three ingredients, Page 14

including pork spareribs, at least one McCormick spice or seasoning product, and at least one Kraft Foods BBQ sauce (if recipe requires a sauce). Two Grand Prize winners will receive a one-year supply of groceries and the chance to attend the 2013 Memphis in May BBQ Event in Memphis, Tenn. Visit the website for complete rules and entry form. Sweet, Spicy, and Smoky Spareribs Serves 6 Prep Time: 10 minutes, Cook Time: 2 hours 5 pounds spareribs, cut into 4-rib slabs 1 tablespoon moked sweet paprika 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 teaspoons cumin, ground 1 teaspoon ground chipotle chiles, or chili powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 cup honey, heated until liquid Mix paprika, salt, oregano, cumin, chipotle or chili powder, garlic powder and onion powder together in small bowl. Sprinkle generously over both sides of ribs. Let stand at room temperature while preparing grill. Prepare outdoor grill for indirect medium-hot grilling. For a gas grill, remove cooking grates.

The San Clemente News

Preheat grill on High. Turn 1 burner off. Place disposable aluminum foil pan over off burner and add 2 cups water to pan. Replace grates. Adjust heat to 350°F. For a charcoal grill, place disposable aluminum foil pan on 1 side of charcoal grate. Build fire on opposite side, and let burn until coals are coated with white ash. Spread coals in grill opposite pan and let burn 15 to 20 minutes. Add 2 cups water to pan. Position cooking grate in grill. Lightly oil cooking grate. Place ribs over foil pan and cover grill. Cook, adding water to pan as needed, until ribs are browned, fork-tender, and meat pulls away from end of bone, about 2 hours. (For charcoal grill, add 10 briquettes to fire every 45 minutes to maintain heat.) During last 20 minutes, occasionally brush both sides of ribs with warm honey. Let stand 5 minutes, cut into ribs, and serve hot.

ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED WILL BE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, this information can be obtained from one of the following three companies: LPS Agency Sales and Posting at (714) 730-2727, or visit the Internet Web site www.lpsasap. com (Registration required to search for sale information) or Priority Posting and Publishing at (714) 573-1965 or visit the Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com (Click on the link for “Advanced Search” to search for sale information), or auction.com at 1-800-280-2832 or visit the Internet Web site www.auction.com, using the Trustee Sale No. shown above. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. A-4398848 07/12/2013, 07/19/2013, 07/26/2013
