Tall ship adventure for 26 orange county teenagers! Next Saturday sees the start of a nine day tall ship adventure for 26 Orange county teenagers! All of the youth are members of Mariners 936 sea scouts based in Dana Point Harbor. They will be sailing on The Spirit of Dana Point , a traditionally built, accurate replica of a 1770’s privateer used during the American Revolution, which is owned by the Ocean Institute. According to Jim “Skip” Wehan, leader of the Mariner program and Captain of the tall ship, this voyage is the highlight of the Mariner year. The itinerary includes visits to remote coves in the Channel Islands National Park on Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands and brief stopovers in Santa Barbara Harbor and Catalina Island. Wehan reports that sailing a 118 foot replica from the early nineteenth century is a very unique experience requiring a great deal of teamwork. In addition, he points out, there are many fun activities for adventurous youth including hiking, kayaking and snorkeling on and around these spectacular islands . This awesome experience often results in bonding and formation of lifelong friendships. Participants prepare for the cruise year round with sail and maintenance training
on Saturdays as well as classroom instruction on Wednesday evenings. The youth will serve as crew members to man the sailing vessel under the supervision of a professional crew. The more experienced of the group will assume responsibilities as junior officers; emphasis on youth leadership is weaved into all Mariner activities. All cruise participants will be assigned to one of three crews serving around the clock watches led by youth officers. Some have spent as many as six years in the program, honing their maritime skills in preparation for their duties as officers, and in keeping with the Mariner motto “Where we go one, there we go all”, they will be expected to pass on their knowledge to the younger Mariners on board. For graduating seniors this may be their last Mariner adventure before starting college in the fall. Although most will continue sailing for recreation and fun, some will be heading to the Maritime Academy in
the fall with the intent of turning their love for the sea into a career. Based out of the County Facility known as the Sailing and Conference Center, Mariners is in it’s 35th year of operation providing ocean experience and training to the youth of Orange County. The program depends on the expertise of 40 adult volunteers and utilizes a fleet of vessels ranging from eight to thirty eight feet in length. Youth in two distinct programs learn
basic through advanced maritime skills in a club atmosphere that is largely youth led under adult supervision. The coed program for 12 and 13 year olds is known as Mariner Juniors while the program for youth ages 14 through high school is known as Mariners. Family day at the festival of the arts august 3 Families and children are invited to enjoy a day full of art and entertainment at the Festival of Arts Family Art Day on Saturday, August 3, 2013. From 12noon – 3pm, the grounds will be full of fun activities, hands-on art projects, and more! Family Art Day is free with Festival Admission, and children 12 and under receive free admission all summer long. When children arrive, they will be given a booklet containing coupons that they’ll get to redeem for the dif-
ferent projects and attractions. Kids will be able to create their own works of art at the Festival’s ceramic and mixed media workshops and even have the opportunity to make Hawaiian crafts and pendants with Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa. Parents and children will enjoy “Art Quest” – an interactive treasure hunt where families explore and investigate the art exhibit to while answering kid-friendly questions. It’s a great way to inspire conversation with the whole family about topics like color, proportion, realism vs. abstraction, 2D vs 3D and all the elements of design. Not something one wants to hear… “While gas grills contribute to a higher number of home fires than their charcoal counterparts, all grills pose a risk for fires and burns says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Firefighters respond to multiple structure fires this time of year that involve barbeques in courtyards, terraces, patios and decks. Grills should be placed well away from the home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. If there is a fire involving grilling equipment, any fuel for the fire should not be near the home or any other structure. Some other grilling safety tips from the NFPA are: Propane and
char grills should only be used outdoors. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting it. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. Charcoal grills - There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney
starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use. FESTIVAL ARTISTS MIX THINGS UP AT THURSDAY ART TALK LAGUNA BEACH, CA — July 23, 2013 — The Festival of Arts continues its weekly Thursday Art Talk series with Mixed Media Artists Carolyn Machado and Mia Moore on Thursday, August 1 from 12 – 1pm. The discussion will be focused on how artists find and use inspiration in their work. Both artists have exhibited at the Festival of Arts since the early 90’s. Together they collaborated on a design for the Festival of Arts Runway Fashion Show, which they will bring to the Thursday Art Talk. Using the costume as an example, they will share their inspirations, combination of materials, vision, and the process that went into creating the look. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to create their own mixed media piece during the discussion. This is one of several topics discussed at the Festival’s weekly Art Talks: A Lecture Series. Each Thursday from 12 - 1pm through August 29, Festival artists lead conversations about their medium, inspiration, and careers in this fascinating and stimulating series. William and Kate name Britain’s new royal heir George By Costas Pitas (Reuters) Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate have chosen three traditional royal names by calling their new-born baby boy George Alexander Louis, William’s office said on Wednesday. The baby, born on Monday to global media frenzy and third in line to the British throne, will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, Kensington Palace said in a statement. All three names had been among the favorites listed by British bookmakers, and the announcement was relatively quick by royal standards; it took a month for the name of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, to be announced, and a week for William, his eldest son. George has been the name of six British kings. The last, George VI, was the father of Queen Elizabeth and reigned from 1936 to 1952. Alexandra, the female form of Alexander, is one of the queen’s middle names, and was also the name of the queen consort of King Edward VII at the start of the last century. Louis is one of William’s middle names, and was the given name of Prince Charles’s mentor and greatuncle Louis Mountbatten, who was assassinated by Irish nationalist IRA guerrillas in 1979. The baby’s arrival on Monday
triggered frenetic coverage from global media who had camped for days on the doorstep of the London hospital where he was born, as well as celebratory gun salutes and the illumination of London landmarks in blue. The choice of name, relatively short by royal standards, does not necessarily mean the baby will eventually become King George VII. The queen’s father was christened Albert, but chose to be crowned as George VI. “It’s interesting that they chose to go with just three names. It’s almost as if the royal family is coming down with ordinary people, who tend to have fewer middle names than monarchs,” historian Suzannah Lipscomb, told Sky News. “It is a name that none can find any problems with. George itself can’t be shortened in any obvious offensive way ... They’ve probably gone for something that is safe.” Some commentators said the names appeared to have no direct connection to Kate’s side of the family. “They’ve kept it very simple by not trying to represent all parts of the family,” royal historian Tracy Borman told Sky News. “I think there seems to be genuine joy, warmth and good feeling about this birth and the duke and duchess are so popular. The royal couple have been living in a remote part of Wales, where William works as a rescue helicopter pilot, but are expected to move later this year to London’s Kensington Palace, William’s childhood home. Royal observers say William is determined to shield his son from the obsessive attention that plagued his mother Diana, pursued relentlessly by the media and killed in a car crash in 1997 after her car was chased by photographers. “William knows only too well that his baby son will be the new favorite creature in the circus he grew up in,” wrote Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson. “Every plan he and Kate have put in place is to protect him.”

Local Events Help Military with Raising Spirits and Money Cast of Sons of Anarchy pose with a Marine who re-enlisted right after This week I had the privilege of attending two events that paid tribute to being discharged. The first one was at Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan with the Boot Campaign; the second event was at the City National Grove of Anaheim with the Semper Fi Fund. Starting with the Boot Campaign, Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan Capistrano was the setting as over 100 Marines from Camp Pendleton and their families were invited to a full blown BBQ dinner, music and fun hosted by the FX Channel and their hit show “Sons of Anarchy”. The vineyard was the perfect place to host these families as the children were able to run around on the grass, get their faces painted, enjoy balloon animals along with pop corn and cotton candy. Bad to the Bone BBQ in San Juan Capistrano served a true backyard bar-b-que feast for the event. The marines had a great time with their families, but what they did not know was the surprise visit from the Sons of Anarchy cast, Theo Rossi aka “Juan Carlos ‘Juice’ Ortiz”, Kim Coats aka “Alex ‘Tig’ Trager”, and Mark Boone Junior aka “Robert ‘Bobby’ Munson”. All three came riding up on their motorcycles as the set was staged for a promotional filming for the hit show as well. The event was staged for the Marines paying tribute to them as well as giving awareness to the Boot Campaign with the cast members helping out The Brotherhood of United States Marine Corps Riders came out to by signing autographs and taking photos with everyone. Talking with Theo, show their support for the Boot Campaign at Hamilton Oaks Winery Kim and Mark afterwards, they told me they are honored to help out in any San Juan. Notable attendees including Ted Nugent, Leigh Steinberg, and Davey Lind along with SafetyHeroes.org Founder and event producer, Mark Peacock of Newport Beach, all delivered moving presentations and over $20,000 was raised in support of the cause. SafetyHeroes.org Founder, Mark J. Peacock of Newport Beach opened the evening welcoming guests and introducing members of Semper Fi Fund with a touching video detailing the organizations efforts. Double leg amputee, MSgt Davey Lind, USMC (Ret), presented his personal story and how Semper Fi Davey Lind with Ted Nugent and Mark Peacock, founder of SafetyHeFund provided priceless assistance in his recovery process. American guitar legend and activist, Ted Nugent, made a special appearance and presentation to Semper Fi Fund prior to his concert at the City National Grove later that evening. While talking with Nugent, he told me he’s humbled by the military families and their sacrifices they make, “It takes a special specimen to see a fire and race towards it...they bring a spirit of righteousness...that’s a unique attribute that only a small percentage qualify for, and I don’t qualify, but if I qualify to be among them, there’s no words to describe how cool that is.” Multiple Taylor guitars, original artwork and other collectible items signed by Ted Nugent were part of the silent auction that helped raise funds for the cause. Other bidding items included sports lessons and outdoors activities donated by various Olympic athletes that were in attendance at the event including two-time USA Olympic kayaking team member, Cathy Marino and Olympic track cyclist, Connie Paraskevin among others. The Semper Fi Fund directs urgently needed resources to post 9 11 members of the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard who serve in support of Marine forces. Orange County Bat Biologist Leads Summer Bat Walk from Casa Romantica On August 1st at 6:30 P.M. In San Clemente, CA - find out first-hand why bats are so important to our local ecology with local bat biologist Stephanie Remington. Join us first at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens for an informative show-and-tell presentation about the lives of local bat species indigenous to Orange County. Then, at sunset, Remington will lead a short “summer bat walk” from Casa Romantica to look for bats by listening for their calls using bat detectors. Remington says, “Summer is the best time of year to look for bats and sunset is the best time of day because ambient light is still sufficient to see bats flying.” Stephanie Remington is a wildlife biologist specializing in the study of bats. After getting her bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Berkeley and she went on to pursue a master ’s degree in Biological Sciences from Cal Poly Pomona, where she wrote her thesis on the Diversity and Distribution of Page 14

Riesling: Oregon’s Best Kept Secret HAPPY GRAPES
By David White If you play word association with a wine enthusiast and throw out the word “Oregon,” chances are pretty high that the response will be “Pinot Noir.” For good reason. In the 1960s, a handful of young vintners moved to the state, all passionate about wine and eager to be a part of something new. Within a decade, those who believed Oregon’s climate would be too cold and wet for grapes were proven
wrong when a Pinot Noir from one of those trailblazers, David Lett, took home gold at the 1979 Wine Olympics in Paris. Over the next 30 years, hundreds of winemakers set up shop in Oregon, eager to produce world-class Pinot Noir. Today, the state’s wine industry promotes itself with posters and other promotional items that say “Drink Pinot, Think Oregon.” But while Lett and other pioneers were focusing on Pinot Noir, a number of other vintners were giving it a go with Riesling. Indeed, about a quarter of Oregon’s vineyards were planted to Riesling in 1980. As Pinot Noir acreage exploded, however, Riesling became overshadowed. Today, though, Oregon Riesling is experiencing a resurgence. And it’s better than ever. Many consumers recoil at the sight of Riesling, as it’s still associated with the sweet, simple German wines of yesteryear, like Blue Nun. Wines like these are still produced and they’ll always have fans. But they do a dis-
service to true Riesling. It’s not by accident that Riesling has long been known as the “noblest of the noble grapes.” For one thing, Riesling is honest. Because most Riesling is fermented in stainless steel, it isn’t manipulated through oak aging or other winemaking techniques. So it’s remarkably transparent and excels in capturing terroir, or a wine’s sense of place. As Robert Parker, the world’s most famous wine critic, once explained, “If you want to talk about terroir, talk about German Rieslings or Alsace Rieslings, where the wines are naked -- there’s no makeup.” Riesling is also quite versatile. Some of the world’s best Rieslings are syrupy and lusciously sweet, while others are bone dry. Most fall somewhere in between, and all are extremely fragrant. And thanks to its high acidity, Riesling is an extremely adaptable food wine. Misconceptions still abound, but fortunately, consumers are starting to recognize that Riesling is a seri-
ous grape. I recently tasted through a dozen Oregon Rieslings and was impressed with all them. One bottle worth finding is Chehalem’s “Three Vineyard Riesling.” Marked by exotic citrus fruits, green apples, and chalk-like minerality, the wine is exceptionally vibrant. Other wines worth looking for include Amity Vineyards’ Wedding Dance Riesling, Penner-Ash’s Willamette Valley Riesling, and Elk Cove’s Estate Riesling. All are refreshing and delicious, offering delicate notes of citrus fruits and apples. These four wines do have quite a bit of residual sugar, but they almost taste dry because they’re balanced by bracing acidity. Plus, they’re affordable. While these producers are known for their Pinot Noir -- many of which cost upwards of $50 per bottle -- these Rieslings can be found for right around $20. Riesling might be Oregon’s best kept secret. So make sure you try some before the word gets out.

STUDENTS IN NEED ELIGIBLE FOR FREE, REDUCES PRICE MEALS JUAN CAPISTRANO—Free and reduced-price meals are offered by the Capistrano Unified School District to needy students under the federal government’s 20132014 National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Federal regulations require that the school district provide an application form with federal and state approved eligibility standards to all households with children enrolled in Capistrano Unified School District. Applications are also available at district schools, the district’s Food and Nutrition department and online at http:// lunchapplication.com/. To apply, an application for each household must be completed and returned to the student’s school, the Food Service department or online. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility of meal benefits. Children who receive CalFresh (food stamps), CalWORKS, Kin-GAP or FDPIR benefits are automatically eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household in which they reside.
Determination is done through a Direct Certification process. Households who do not receive an eligibility notice by the beginning of the school year should fill out and return an application, filling in only the child’s name and case number and signing the form. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court are also eligible for free
meals. Information on an application will be confidential and used only to determine eligibility for participation in the meal programs. It may be verified at any time during the school year by the district’s F o o d a n d N u t r i t i o n Serv i c e s Department. The school district follows the U.S.D.A. eligibility guidelines for
Free or Reduced Price Meals to determine qualified applicants. Following receipt and processing of an application, parents or guardians will be notified by mail of the action taken. If the parent or guardian wishes to make a formal appeal of a decision, they may do so by contacting the Food and Nutrition Services Department at (949) 234-9501.

Just note that the more
fabric a bathing suit has, the longer it will take to dry. Layering (or some other decorative detail) on the top will make things appear bigger than they really are and draw attention towards the upper body. Camouflaging a problem bottom half is often done best with a separate sarong or wrap. The sarong can be worn (or removed) as needed and be kept dry.
