5 Ways to Save Money on School Gear Families are working to stretch their back-to-school shopping budgets further this year, according to a recent survey by the National Retail Foundation. But saving money isn’t just about how much you spend on supplies; it’s also about making school supplies and equipment last as long as possible. Here are some tips for protecting your students’ school gear to help stretch your budget – and their gear: Talk with children about handling tech devices. Kids will be kids, and sometimes that means they’ll be tough on their stuff. Unfortunately, their school-mandated tech devices – such as calculators, tablets and laptops – can’t always take the beating. To reduce the risk of accidental breakage, talk to kids about proper handling and storage of their devices and the potential risks for breakage when drops, spills and hard impacts occur. Lighten the backpack load. Between books and laptops, students tend to pack a lot of heavy items in their backpacks during the course of a school year. As the load increases, backpack zippers may break, and seams may tear from the daily stress. Reduce the wear and tear by ensuring your kids don’t over-pack their bags. Not only will this reduce strain on their backpacks, it will lighten the load on
students’ backs as well. Consider a protection plan. Research shows that some school essentials – such as backpacks and laptop batteries – break or stop functioning within the first 1-2 years of use. To help keep costs down, many retailers offer reputable protection plans, such as SIMPLR, which can help repair or replace the equipment for free or a fraction of what you’d normally pay on your own. Sharing isn’t always caring. Even if your child handles his calculator or
laptop with care, his friends might not. Establish guidelines with your kids at the start of the school year about what items can be shared with others at school and which cannot. For those things that can be shared, consider encouraging your child to establish ground rules when sharing with friends. Guidelines could include when the item should be returned, tasks for which the item will be used and an understanding that items will be handled with care. Don’t forget about bikes. Kids
who ride their bikes to school can be just as hard on their bikes as they are on their school supplies. A tuneup at the start of the school year can keep the bike running smoothly and help catch wear and tear, such as damaged spokes or worn tires and brake pads. For more information on protection plans for your child’s school supplies and tech devices, visit simplrplan. com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

31st Annual Dana Point Tall Ships Festival This weekend September 12-13, 2015. Sunset Parade Friday September 11. Every September the Dana Point Harbor becomes a forest of towering masts, billowing sails, and stately wooden ships in early September during the annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest gathering of historic sailing ships on the West Coast. www.tallshipsfestival.com The Toshiba Tall Ships Festival started in 1984 and is the Ocean Institute’s premier annual event, drawing thousands to Dana Point’s beautiful harbor. This festival celebrates the return of the brig Pilgrim from her annual summer sail as an ambassador of good will for the City of Dana Point and the Ocean Institute. Equally important, the festival highlights the community’s rich cultural heritage as chronicled in Richard Henry Dana’s classic American novel, “Two Years Before the Mast”, when the Pilgrim explored and traded along this coastline in the early days while California was still owned by Mexico The brig Pilgrim and the other tall ships of her era represent an important chapter in our nation’s history. This era represents history’s last largescale technological transportation system whose fabrication and implementation had little or no carbon footprint. In evoking the history, heritage, and romance of the Age of Sail, Tall Ship festivals also symbolize the capacity of humanity to achieve world-changing developments through the use of
sustainable technologies. About the Ocean Institute The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs. More than 115,000 K-12 students and 8,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute’s 61 award-winning, immersion style programs. The Institute is primarily an educational facility specializing in innovative marine and social science programs. 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr. Dana Point, CA 92629. 949.496.2274 www.ocean-institute.org About Tall Ships America: The Tall Ships Challenge Series Tall Ships America’s TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® is an annual series that rotates on a three-year cycle between the Atlantic Coast, Great Lakes and the Pacific Coast. 3 hearty breakfast recipes for everyone in a hurry Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Everyone has heard that saying, but unfortunately, breakfast is also often the most forgotten meal of the day. Instead of enjoying a hearty, nutritious breakfast, many people opt for simple alternatives on the go because they believe creating a wellrounded breakfast will take too long. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. To show you just how easy it can be to create a wonderful breakfast, here are a few recipes that will have you reinvisioning the bagel and hitting your busy morning with a little extra spring in your step. Eggs Florentine Bagels Ingredients 2 Plain Bagels, split and toasted 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups milk, heated 4 large eggs 1/2 cup fresh baby spinach leaves Directions Melt butter in a small saucepan over moderate heat and whisk in flour. Cook, whisking constantly, for two minutes. Whisk in milk in a stream, until smooth. Simmer, whisking, until thickened, about three minutes and reduced to 1-1/4 cups. Keep warm, covered, off heat. Fill a medium skillet halfway with water and bring to a boil. Break eggs into separate teacups and pour into water. Cover skillet and remove from heat. Let eggs sit for about 4 minutes until whites are set. Place bagels on serving plates and top each with 1/4 of spinach, using a slotted spoon top with a poached egg
and 1/4 of sauce. Serve immediately. Smoked Tomato, Basil and Brie Bagel Ingredients 2 bagels, split and toasted 4 oz. warm Brie 1 large tomato, quartered and smoked 2 leaves fresh basil Directions Toast a Plain Bagel and set aside. Quarter and smoke one large tomato and set aside. Top Bagel halves with warm Brie and tomato quarters. Add basil. Santa Fe Bagel Thins Bagel Ingredients 1 100% Whole Wheat Bagel Thins bagel 3 egg whites 4 tbsp. black bean hummus (storebought or homemade) 2 tbsp. low-fat sour cream 4 tbsp. tomato salsa Nonstick cooking oil spray Homemade black bean hummus:
1 can (15 oz.) black beans, rinsed and drained 1/2 garlic clove, chopped 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 3/4 tsp. ground cumin Directions Separate and toast Bagel Thins bagel. Place open-faced and top each half with two tablespoons of hummus and 1 tablespoon of low-fat sour cream. Spray nonstick frying pan with cooking oil and put on stovetop under medium heat. Beat three egg whites together in mixing bowl and then pour into heated frying pan. Once eggs are cooked through, place on open-faced English muffin and top with salsa. Homemade black bean hummus: Mince all ingredients together in food processor until smooth; refrigerate. These recipes are quick, easy and can give you just the lift you need to start your day. So give them a try.

an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup and serves as the state’s largest volunteer event that sees upwards of 60,000 Californians participate each year. California’s coast and waterways collect large amounts of trash and debris that originated from human activities. This debris, if not removed, can be harmful
and even fatal to marine wildlife, can damage our state’s economy, and can be considered a human health hazard. To sign up or for more information, call (949) 361-8204 or visit the City’s website at www.san-clemente.org to register on-line.

Ribs, Pigs and Watermelon Raises $50,000 for American Family Housing As we say goodbye to summer and another season of spectacular things to do along the Southern California coast, American Family Housing’s 4th annual fundraiser, Ribs, Pigs and Watermelons Professional BBQ Competition and Summer Festival, is sure to be remembered for its feel-good cause and unique theme of events that attracted thousands to Huntington State Beach during the August 7-9 weekend. Shedding light and a little lightheartedness on a somber subject, the non-profit organization teamed up with a long list of loyal sponsors to pull off a culinary extravaganza that raised awareness and critical funds to support homeless adults and families in Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. With over fifty professional BBQ teams filling a quarter-mile stretch of the State Beach parking lot alongside the boardwalk, the event engulfed the beach with that unmistakable smell of spicy barbeque smoke and the powerful scent of craft beers, raising over $50,000 for American Family Housing programs that provide an array of urgently needed social services and affordable housing options to vulnerable populations facing barriers to housing stability. Sponsors of the event included Yelp OC, Southwest Material Handling, Inc., OC Mazda, Rainbow Environmental Services, Chef Jason Fullilove, Hub International, US Bank and BJ’s Brewhouse, who provided all of the handcrafted sodas and beers for guests. Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, the event attracted top nationally ranked BBQ teams -- including teams from the TLC reality television show BBQ Pitmasters -- who competed for the $10,000 grand prize while cooking up some savory meats for the hungry crowds. The winning teams included Grand Champion Pig Skin BBQ from Iowa and Reserved Grand Champion Hickory & Spice from Tustin, Calif. The People’s Choice Award, determined by the public in attendance, went to Twisted Brisket from Costa Mesa, Calif. The best tastings throughout the weekend included bacon candy, moink balls—an all-beef meatball wrapped in bacon—ribs, chicken, tri-tip, brisket, sausage, bacon-flavored kettle corn and cotton candy and more. Thousands of pounds of watermelon were on hand for consuming, with competitions attracting children and adults alike. On Saturday afternoon, families joined in for the Kids Que, an event that allowed children ages 6 to 15 to compete in their own BBQ competition. Parents stood by as their children barbequed burgers and steaks. Team “Brenden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 6 to 10-year-old division and team “Jayden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 11 to 15-year-old division. Guests who wanted a home-on-the-range experience had the unusual opportunity to compete in cow-milking contests, and for those who were less apt to get their faces and hands dirty, a classic car show provided an atmosphere of old-fashioned fun. Without a doubt, the eating contests provided the most entertainment for both participants, who got to stuff their faces, and the bystanders who watched in shock and awe. People truly ate their hearts out, devouring ribs and watermelon in record time. Later, they got a chance to dance it all off with live music from some great local bands that included the American Vagrants, Rockaholics, and Maureen and the Mercury 5. Sharpen Students’ Minds with Proper Nutrition Bells will soon be ringing, and parents may experience a sense of déjà vu for the first several weeks of school. That’s because the early part of each new school year is commonly spent reversing the effect of “summer brain drain” – when kids lose skills they mastered the previous year. According to a recent survey by DSM Nutritional Products and Pop Warner, 78 percent of parents are concerned about students’ difficulties retaining what they learned in school throughout the summer. A majority of surveyed parents understand the role of nutrition in physical and academic performance, but don’t make the connection to nutrition’s role in preventing brain drain. While many parents encourage their children to take vitamins and minerals to supplement nutrition, nearly half admit they aren’t clear about which nutrients support children’s brain health. What’s more, maintaining a well-rounded and healthy diet and taking vitamins and other essential nutrients that support brain health ranked significantly lower than other strategies parents use to prevent brain drain, such as sports and academic activities. Nutrition plays an important role in brain health year-round, says Elizabeth Somer, a nationally acclaimed registered dietitian, nutritionist and author. To help keep your students’ minds sharp as they head back to school, consider these tips from Somer: Eat fatty fish twice a week for dinner or supplement omega-3s. Omega-3s are highly concentrated in the brain and important to brain health, yet according to research published in the British Medical Journal, the average American diet contains less omega-3s from seafood than most other developed countries. Children and adults
should get the recommended two servings of fatty fish, such as salmon, per week. Offer a variety of healthy food options in the house. Giving children choices teaches them to take care of their bodies and empowers them to make better food decisions in the future. Stock the kitchen with lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, such as baby carrots, berries and bananas for snacks, and broccoli, green peas and mashed sweet potatoes for dinner. The nutrients in these foods are important for the brain. Along with calcium, low-fat milk supplies vitamin D, which is a nutrient essential for brain development.
Consider taking a multivitamin. No one eats perfectly. It is important to talk with your physician or registered dietitian about whether you or your children could benefit from a multivitamin. According to research published in The Journal of Nutrition, only 10 percent of Americans get the nutrients they need from their food, and supplementation can help fill that gap. Visit www.VitaminsinMotion.com to learn more about the important role of essential nutrients for health and wellness. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
GOT DOG? GET A LICENSE! Animal Shelter Reminds Dog Owners of Importance of Obtaining a License All dogs over the age of four months are required to be licensed in the cities of San Clemente and Dana Point. A license is the only visible indicator that your dog is current on their rabies vaccination. This vaccination is required by law in accordance with the California State Health & Safety Code (121690), requiring all dogs over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies and have a current license tag issued by the local governing agency. Rabies is one of the most well known of all the viruses. It is spread when an infected animal scratches or bites another animal or human. Fortunately, animal control and active vaccination programs have decreased the risk of rabies in our local canine population. There is no treatment or cure for rabies once the symptoms appear in your pet. The virus results in fatality. If your dog is not currently vaccinated for rabies and has an encounter with wildlife, incurring an injury, there is a mandatory sixmonth quarantine period with only one other option, being euthanasia. Unfortunately, your pet will not be
allowed to leave your property during the quarantine period. The animal cannot interact with other animals that do not also live in the home. This can become an inconvenience by limiting their activity, and costly, if pet sitters are needed in place of boarding facilities, exercising your dog on a daily basis off your property is part of your routine, or having doggie play dates on a regular basis. Vaccination is the key to protecting your pet against rabies. Due to the number of rabid bats being detected by Orange County, this area has been classified as a “rabies area” by the California Department of Public Health. As a result, all animal bites are reportable and biting animals must be quarantined (17CCR2606a). Any animal exposed to potentially rabid animals also must be quarantined (17CCR2606c). Fortunately an animal that is current on their rabies vaccination, is only required to receive a rabies booster shot within five days of an encounter, and spend only 30 days quarantined in your home. There are numerous other advantages to licensing your dog,
including if lost, the license is a direct contact between you and your animal. The licensing fee supports the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter in finding homes for stray and surrendered pets, and the cost of the license is much less than the cost of
a citation if caught without a current license. For more information on rabies, licensing and/or general animal questions, please contact the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter at (949) 492-1617.

Can your morning cup of joe make the world a better place?
Can’t start your day without a cup of coffee? You’re not alone; 63 percent of adult Americans drink coffee every day, according to the 2012 National Coffee Association’s National Coffee Drinking Trends study. All those cups of joe, however, can do more than give Americans the boost they need to wake up. They also have the potential to help coffee farmers around the world. A growing number of Americans are embracing Fair Trade, which provides farmers a fair price for their crops, resulting in a better quality of life in their communities. Fair Trade benefits more than 1.2 million families in 70 developing countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America, according to Fair Trade USA - a leading Fair Trade certification organization. The majority of Americans (74 percent) believe it’s important to purchase products that are priced to compensate producers fairly, yet only one-in-five Americans (18 percent) are purchasing Fair Trade regularly, according to new research from Fair Trade USA. Fair Trade results in quality products, because when farmers are paid more, they can invest back into the quality of the products they produce. “More and more people are shopping at their local farmers’ markets, because they want quality products, and want to know where these products come from and that they are grown or produced in socially and environmentally responsible ways. Fair Trade is like a global farmers’ market - it extends those same values to products that aren’t grown locally,” says Lindsey Bolger, vice president, Coffee Sourcing & Excellence for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR). GMCR purchased more than 54 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified (TM) coffee in 2012, making the company the largest purchaser of Fair Page 16
Trade Certified coffee in the world. In addition, through the community development funds that are generated by Fair Trade purchases, farmers and their families can help address other community needs, such as improving roads, building health care facilities and ensuring access to education for their children. “Purchasing Fair Trade products is a simple choice that can make a big difference in coffee communities around the world,” says Bolger. In 2012 alone, GMCR’s Fair Trade Certified coffee purchases contributed to more than $10 million in Fair Trade community development funds. Fair Trade Certified products include tea-and herbs,-cocoa,-rice,vanilla,-sugar,-flowers, fruit, wineand-apparel. Coffee-is the most popular-Fair Trade-product in the U.S. and is a good model for how Fair Trade can benefit both farmers and consumers. Many coffee farmers are small landowners in remote locations and lack access to credit, so they are vulnerable to middlemen who offer cash for their coffee at a fraction of its value. Fair Trade means these farmers receive a fair price for their beans, which they can invest back into the quality of the coffee and the health of their communities.Finding Fair Trade Certified products is easier than most shoppers think. Many popular coffees are available as Fair Trade Certified blends and Green Mountain Coffee (R) offers one of the largest selections of Fair Trade Certified coffees in the U.S. This includes one of the brand’s newest coffees, Three Continent Blend, which combines the flavors and aromas of three continents (South America, Africa and Asia) in one harmonious Extra Bold blend. As required by law, you are hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkASAP.com , using the file number assigned to this case 15-14638. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 08/28/2015 Carrington Foreclosure Services, LLC 1610 E.
