Secretary of State Padilla Statement on Letters from Voter Participation Center County elections officials and the Secretary of State’s office have received over 100 complaints from voters who have received letters from a group called the Voter Participation Center. The organization’s letters claim that the voter is not registered to vote and offers a pre-filled voter registration form that has incorrect or outdated information or information for persons who don’t live at the address. In many instances, the voter is in fact properly registered to vote. It is important that organizations conducting voter registration drives through the mail ensure that their voter data is up-to-date and accurate. Causing confusion right before an election is wrong. “If you have questions about
your voter registration status, check directly with your county elections office,” Secretary of State Padilla said. “Many counties have online tools that allow voters to verify their voter registration information. Also, contact information for county elections officials and links to county online voter registration status tools is available on the Secretary of State’s website at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/ elections/registration-status/. ” New voters or persons who want to update their voter registration information can visit the Secretary of State’s official voter registration website: http://registertovote.ca.gov/. If you need to update your voter registration information, the deadline is October 24.

Smart, safe storage and organization for back to school
A little organization goes a long way. Not only can it lead to career success and personal productivity, but as students head back to class this fall, it can also provide health benefits and increase student security. Security in schools is a major concern for Americans, with 60 percent of respondents in a recent nationwide survey of 1,000 U.S. adults stating that they worry about the security of their children’s belongings in a school setting. “Implementing smart storage and organization habits now will position students for a successful school year,” says Rebecca Smith, vice president of marketing for Master Lock. “Not only can you relieve some of the stress of worrying about your kids losing important homework assignments or having their valuables stolen at school, but you will have more free time to enjoy together.”Follow these tips for a smooth transition into the new school year. 1. Mix and fix your routine Sit down with your family and evaluate your daily routines to ensure they are organized and effective. Identify aspects that no longer work and discuss ways they can be adjusted. If getting the kids fed and out the door in the morning is your biggest challenge, do as much as you
can in the evenings to prepare for the next day. Lay out clothes in advance, cook and freeze breakfast options that can be easily thawed and served while you attend to other items. If organization is more of an afternoon struggle, create checklists that outline household chores, homework and other responsibilities to keep kids on track after school. 2. Be involved Keeping the family organized and safe begins and ends with regular communication and parent involvement. Carve out a time at night to not only get kids started with homework, but to be available for questions, look through their backpacks and ask them to review their day so you are up-to-date with their regular activities. Discuss their security routines by reminding them to lock up belongings while at school and to lock the door when they return home afterwards. 3. File everything “A place for everything and everything in its place.” In keeping with this famous and wise phrase, create a filing system that organizes everything from administrative documents and report cards to study guides, test scores and great achievements. Keeping all these items in a secure, central location will make it easy for you and your children
to access important information, such as school records and contact information. Schedule time every few months to go through the documents to discard unnecessary items and ensure that your system remains as organized as possible. Consider a cloud-based digital organization and storage app and website such as the Master Lock Vault for access to important information on-the-go. Storing documents and other private data online is not only convenient, it also eliminates the risk of losing hard copies of key items. 4. Keep backpacks light and secure A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of his or her total body weight, UMass Memorial Medical Center pediatrician Dr. Safdar Medina said during a recent interview posted on Worcester.com. When worn improperly or packed with too many heavy items, backpacks can cause pain, restrict circulation and can lead to posture problems. To keep backpacks light, ensure your children have secure locks for school and gym lockers so they are comfortable storing books and other valuables in these places while at class. Use folders or lightweight expanding files to store homework in one place and eliminate carrying heavier materials like plastic binders. Designate a
backpack docking station near your home’s entryway to encourage kids to unpack and leave them rather than carry them around the home. Finally, don’t forget to provide a lightweight backpack lock to deter pickpockets and keep valuables secure. 5. Create a homework hub Do your kids work best in the kitchen, living room or an alternative location? Identify an area where they can concentrate well and outfit it with any supplies or items they might need for various assignments. Use creative storage solutions such as a shoe organizer for art supplies or mason jars to hold pens, pencils, scissors and more. Having all the tools necessary to complete a given project in one area will limit distractions and time wasted attempting to locate that missing calculator. For more advice on back-to-school security, storage and organization tips, visit www.masterlock.com. -(BPT)
The best kind of home improvements: high-impact, low-maintenance
Yes, everyone knows making home improvements is a worthy investment in your greatest material asset. Sure you want every improvement job done well with top-notch end results. But when all is said and done, do you really want to have to put a lot of effort and money into maintaining those improvements? For most people - whether they’ll admit it or not - the answer is “no.” The best home improvements are the ones that not only enhance your home’s value and livability, but also require little work from you afterward to keep them looking great and functioning well. If you’re looking for high-impact, low-maintenance home improvements, consider these popular projects: No-leak skylights When it comes to an improvement that brightens your home, enhances its indoor air quality and boosts energy-efficiency, skylights deliver. Unfortunately, early skylights had a reputation for being leaky - a problem that simply doesn’t occur with modern, no leak, energyefficient skylights like those made by Velux America. Pre-engineered flashing kits (the metal shield that surrounds any opening in a wall or roof) work with all types of roofs, from shingles to metal, to ensure a Page 6
properly installed skylight won’t leak. Need further low-maintenance points to make the case for adding a skylight? Not only do modern skylights keep water out, they’re energy efficient as well. Energy Star-qualified, no leak solar-powered fresh air skylights, like those from Velux, deliver fresh air through costeffective passive ventilation. Adding remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds allows you to easily open or close a fresh air skylight and shade it when the sun hits that part of the roof, boosting the skylight’s energy efficiency by 39 percent. Keep the shade open during cold weather to admit warmth and reduce heating costs. A 30 percent federal tax credit on both products and installation costs makes a skylight project even more appealing. Visit www.veluxusa. com for a tax calculator to show your savings for a new installation or replacement skylights and a skylight planner app to show exactly how skylights and blinds will look in any area of your home. Lighting upgrade Older light fixtures not only look dated, they often use outdated, inefficient bulbs and are lacking in the energy-efficient emphasis that comes with newer fixtures. Upgrading lighting throughout your
The San Clemente News
home is a great way to ensure you won’t have to think about it again any time soon. If a total lighting redesign is out of the question, you can still make your existing light fixtures lower maintenance simply by swapping out old, inefficient incandescent light bulbs with newer, electricity-sipping versions. Options like CFLs and LEDs provide all the light of incandescents while using a fraction of the energy. Energy.gov says Energy Star-rated LEDs use at least 75 percent less power than incandescent bulbs, and last 25 times longer. Imagine the time, hassle and money you’ll save not having to replace bulbs constantly - especially in lights that get a lot of use, like porch lights, or that are hard to reach, like the chandelier in your two-story entryway. Vinyl siding Wood, fiber cement, stucco, brick - there are nearly as many types of exterior siding as there are colors to paint it. When it comes to low- or no-maintenance siding, vinyl remains the gold standard. In fact, more new homes are built using vinyl siding than any other type of siding product, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. While early versions of vinyl siding introduced in the 1950s earned
criticism for being less lovely than wood, even those less sophisticated versions had staying power; it’s possible to find homes in use today sporting vinyl siding that was added to the house in the 1970s or even earlier. Vinyl siding never needs to be painted, and when properly installed provides exceptional shielding from the elements. New technology has made modern vinyl siding look better and last longer without fading issues associated with older versions of vinyl. It requires basic cleaning, and overall maintenance demands are much less than other types of siding. Visit www.vinylsiding.org to learn more. - (BPT)

T O AST T O THE C ASA – S e p t e m b e r 2 4 , 2 0 1 6 Ho n o r a r y C h a i r m a n A n n o u n c e d Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is thrilled to announce the appointment of the Honorary Chairman for Toast to the Casa 2016, which is the nonprofit’s preeminent annual fundraising gala. This year’s Honorary Chairman is Sir Bruno Serato. “Sir Bruno Serato is a beacon of generosity and a model for the Orange County philanthropic community. We are deeply honored to have him as our Honorary Chairman,” says Executive Director of Casa Romantica, Berenika Schmitz. Serato is the founder of Caterina’s Club, an Anaheim-based nonprofit with two goals: to provide underprivileged children with dinner five nights per week, and to provide qualified families with the assistance to move from motel rooms into the safety and stability of an apartment or condo. Currently Caterina’s Club makes 6,000 meals per week, with approximately one million meals served since the charity began in 2005. They have also helped 95 families move away from motel living. In 2011, he was honored as one of CNN’s ‘10 Heroes of the Year’ for his dedication to these children and families, and the Italian government recognized his contribution by bestowing him with the Recipient of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic – earning him the official title ‘Sir’ Bruno Serato. He cites a 2005 visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Anaheim with his mother – for whom the charity is named – as his inspiration for the cause, when he noticed that a young boy only had vending machine juice and chips for his dinner. He returned to the facility with several pounds of a pasta dinner that he cooked
up for the boy and a dozen others. Serato has been dedicated to their welfare ever since, even throughout the economic downturn when, he reflects, “I had my worries about my own financial stability – but their worries were greater than mine.” In 2013, he began partnering with the Illumination Foundation to expand his outreach from Anaheim to several other neighboring cities. In addition to his incredible philanthropic work, Serato is also the owner of a highly successful Italian steakhouse, Anaheim White House. The “Toast to the Casa” annual gala at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens raises critical funds for our programs and preservation that benefit our San Clemente and south Orange County community. Casa Romantica provides programs for all ages in arts, music, history, and horticulture. A major beneficiary of the Casa’s fundraising efforts is Casa Kids, a collection of free children’s programs which include a classical music festival and academy, a dance workshop, garden workshops, and field trip tours for over 2,000 children in the Capistrano Unified School District. Previous Honorary Chairs of the Toast to the Casa have included Mr. and Mrs. Gavin and Ninetta Herbert, as well as the Consul General of Spain, the Honorable Javier Vallaure. The theme of Toast to the Casa 2016 is Gran Ballo delle Maschere (Venetian Ball), and the black-tie (masks encouraged) gala will be a celebration of Italian culture. The Casa will be decorated opulently with elegant surprises in each public space, including a canal complete with a gondola. The Toast to the Casa features fine food and wines
Honorary Chairman Sir Bruno Serato. from over 30 local San Clemente restaurants and wineries, and a silent auction with donations from local and international businesses will be complimented by a riveting live auction event halfway through the evening. The first Open Casa of the season will debut with an exhibition of Carnivale art photography by famous Florentine photographer Sandro Santioli, and with custommade Venetian masks by artist Carla Almanza-de Quant, who works in the traditional 16th and 17th century technique. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by renowned accordion performer Nick Ariondo, who will delight the audience on the Ocean Terrace performing Italian favorites; Studio Zanni, who will perform Commedia del’Arte vignettes throughout the home; Sabras Band, who will play Italian traditional and folk music in the courtyard; and an Italian opera-singing gondolier in the Casa Canal. There will be walking tables and games around the site. “Toast to the Casa 2016: Gran Ballo delle Maschere” will be held
on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase online or over the phone at (949) 498-2139 and are $175 if purchased before September 1. Weeknight meals made easy with simple tips (recipe follows), a classic favorite that the whole family will enjoy. There’s minimal pre-cooking required - simply steam the broccoli, measure the remaining ingredients, put them in your Vitamix Professional Series 500 blender and start the Hot Soup program. When the program completes, pour into bowls and garnish with extra steamed broccoli florets and bit of grated cheese. For a heartier meal, chop and add grilled chicken chunks. Serve with crusty bread and a salad for a complete dinner. Wednesday Whole-wheat pasta with basil walnut pesto is a crowd pleaser. Take fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and walnuts and puree with garlic, olive oil and lemon juice in your Vitamix for a quick and easy sauce. If there are stuffed pepper leftovers, chop and heat for a tasty pasta topping. Make a large batch of pesto and you can use the leftover portion later in the week. Thursday Throw together a chicken stir-fry for another quick weeknight meal. Chop up your favorite vegetables, including extra cauliflower, onions and carrots from Monday’s stuffed peppers and broccoli from Tuesday’s soup. Saute the vegetables with cooked, cubed chicken and a mix of soy and teriyaki sauces. Serve over rice and offer a spicy chili sauce for those who like it hot.
What’s for dinner? It’s a question most of us ask every day. With evening routines packed full of extracurricular activities, chores and preparation for the following day, we don’t always have as much time as we’d like to make dinner. Fortunately, a quick, delicious and healthy meal can still be an option for your family, even when you’re short on time. All it takes is a little planning, some common ingredients and one trip to the grocery store. Here are five dinners to take you through an entire work week: Monday Start the week by putting your slow cooker to work for you. Slice off the tops of four to six bell peppers, but don’t throw them out. Remove the seeds and stuff each pepper with a combination of lean ground turkey or chicken sausage, grated cauliflower, carrots, onion and garlic, plus fresh herbs, salt and pepper. Put the pepper tops back on, arrange the peppers securely in a slow cooker, pour a large can of low-sodium chopped tomatoes over them and cook on low for eight hours. Dinner will be ready when you walk in the door. Tuesday Soup can be a quick way to have dinner on the table in minutes - and it allows you to use up vegetables that may be near the end of their shelf life. Try a Broccoli Cheese Soup
Friday You’ve made it through the week. Why not treat your family to pizza? Top a ready-made, whole-wheat pizza crust with your leftover pesto sauce, cheese and any toppings you’d like. Add peppers, mushrooms and vegetables you chopped for the soup and stir-fry to create a veggie delight. Follow the cooking instructions on the pizza crust package, and you’ll be ready to kick off your weekend in no time. With a bit of planning, you can shop once and have your dinners set for the week. Buy canned or frozen fruits and vegetables in bulk and try to prepare at least two meals using the same ingredients. Even with hectic schedules, families can prepare and sit down to a satisfying meal every
night of the week. Broccoli cheese soup Yields two cups. Ingredients: 1 cup (240 ml) milk, skim or low fat 1⁄3 cup (40 g) shredded, low fat cheddar cheese| 1 cup (100 g) chopped fresh or frozen broccoli or cauliflower florets, steamed 1 teaspoon diced onion 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1⁄4 teaspoon chicken or vegetable bouillon or soup base Directions: Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid. Select Hot Soup program. Press Start. Allow machine to complete programmed cycle. - (BPT)

NAWBO honored three remarkable business women, who have demonstrated success, leadership and passion in their chosen fields to a crowd of more than 400 guests. Three businesswomen recognized at the dinner awards ceremony were Deborah Dickson, Cynthia Flynn and Loreen Gilbert. Dickson was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by Congresswoman Mimi Walters. Dickson is founder and president of Smith Dickson, a CPA firm specializing in financial statements, tax work, and consulting and litigation services. Flynn, a practicing attorney in her own practice, Hackler Flynn & Associates was awarded Entrepreneur to Watch and the keynote speaker Michael E. Gerber introduced her. Business Owner of the Year went to Gilbert, founder of Wealth Wise Financial Services a firm offering securities and investment advice to individuals and businesses. She was introduced by Henry Walker of F&M Bank – who is another great NAWBO supporter. Michelle Beauchamp received the Member of the Year from NAWBO, very fitting as Beauchamp has been a force in the organization since she first joined ten years ago. There was also a tribute to all of the Remarkable Women Honorees from the past 19 years on stage by NAWBO-OC President Penny Fox and gala event chair Marni Smith. Gerber, a true legend of entrepreneurship, served as a Keynote Speaker. Inc. Magazine calls him “the World’s #1 Small Business Guru” – the entrepreneurial and small business thought leader who has impacted the lives of millions of individuals and hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide for over 40 years. When asked about his relationship with NAWBO-OC, Gerber said, “I was extremely thrilled and honored to help support an organization with such successful business women. They exemplify the true core of an entrepreneurial spirit and serve as role models to young women everywhere.” NAWBO-OC Event Chair Marni Smith stated, “I decided to join NAWBOOC after attending the “Remarkable Women Awards” Gala over two years ago, and I could not be more proud to be part of this organization or more honored and excited to be the chair of the 2015-16 event. This is the 20th anniversary of the “Remarkable Women Awards,” and it was a historical event for NAWBO-OC.” Debbie Dickson said, “The ballroom was beautiful, actually stunning! The program was well put together and executed flawlessly. The timing was excellent. The speakers were interesting. I was proud of each participant and grateful to share in such a glorious evening.” Since 1996, NAWBO-OC’s Remarkable Women Awards has recognized local businesswomen, women business owners, and women entrepreneurs who have dared to step out, follow their dreams, and inspire others by their commitment to what is possible. PACIFIC SYMPHONY POPS 2016-17 SEASON BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE WITH THE MULTI-TALENTED, AMERICA’S SWEETHEART, AMY GRANT!
Photo by: Cheryl Anteau and Debra Akins Pacific Symphony’s Pops season undergoes a mighty launch with a stupendous opening night featuring six-time Grammy Award winner Amy Grant. This American-music icon has enjoyed a career spanning more than 30 years, stretching from her roots in gospel music to leading pop star, songwriter, television personality and philanthropist. Known as “America’s Sweetheart” and admired for her crossover music—from contemporary Christian to mainstream—Grant has produced numerous hits such as “Baby Baby,” “Every Heartbeat,” “That’s What Love is For,” “I Will Remember You,” “Lead Me On,” “El Shaddai” and more. She now brings her soothing voice, engaging personality and talent for erasing the lines between genres to the Symphony for a perfect night out that includes an exciting mix of music from her latest musical endeavors to her greatest hits. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, Pops opening weekend opens with a first half dedicated to music by the incomparable Henry Mancini, including some of his greatest hits, “Pink Panther,” “Charade,” “Moon River” and “Peter Gunn.” The concert takes place on Oct. 14-15, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $35-$167, ($195 Box Circle). For more information or to purchase tickets call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “Amy Grant is not only a terrific singer, but she also brings a special spirit to the stage that makes the audience feel right at home,” says Maestro Kaufman. “Her talents are known around the world, but she is one of the most humble and welcoming people
who ever stood on a stage. Amy’s style is part of the American musical ‘fabric.’ The Christmas shows we did together a couple of years ago were such a treat and truly memorable— we’re so glad she’s back! She is the perfect person to take center stage on our opening Pops weekend.” Grant last left Orange County audiences wanting more in December 2013, when she made her debut performance with Pacific Symphony and wowed all with her warm, uplifting holiday concert. Her artistry has resonated with audiences since she first hit the national spotlight a few decades ago as a fresh-faced teen with a guitar. She became the first artist in Christian music to have a platinum record and went on to become a crossover sensation. To date, Grant has earned three multi-platinum albums, six additional platinum albums and four gold albums. She has scored 10 Top 40 pop singles and 17 Top 40 adult contemporary tracks, as well as a string of contemporary Christian chart-toppers. She’s received six Grammy Awards, numerous Dove Awards and has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2006. According to the singer herself, she has built her long, successful career on music that “matters.” Ever since she burst on the scene to bring contemporary Christian music to the forefront of American culture, the Nashville native gained a reputation for creating potent songs that examine life’s complexities with an open heart and keen eye, allowing her musical gifts that transcend genre boundaries to make her a household name. Embracing both the triumphs and challenges of her life, Grant has distilled them to their essence and poured the lessons learned into
Amy Grant songs, which ache with honesty and reverberate with gentle wisdom. The songs she’s written, especially in latter years, represent a season of growth for her, yet as personal as they are, they are also universal—examining and reflecting on love, loss, death and the passing of time. Some of her more recent tunes deliver a sense of anticipation and optimism, while others lean into life’s most challenging moments. “At some point in life you realize that some things really matter and some things don’t,” Grant says. “Living matters. Celebrating life matters. Seeing the value in hard times matters; relationships and people matter; faith matters. I feel like that’s where my head has been… I feel this is a very positive…life affirming. Life prepares us for the journey. You don’t know what’s ahead and that is one of the great things about getting older in a framework of faith. Faith is the one thing that stands the test of time.” And it’s all something she puts to music incredibly well. While Grant performs on the second half of the Symphony’s program, the
concert opens with a tribute to Henry Mancini, one of the most successful composer-arranger-conductors of our time. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini received 72 Grammy nominations and 13 Oscar nominations, and he won 20 Grammy Awards and three Academy Awards—the all-time record for a pop artist. For the 1961 movie, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” alone, Mancini won five Grammys and two Oscars. “Our first half will shine the spotlight on a musical legend—Henry Mancini—who is considered an American musical treasure,” says Kaufman. “This opening concert of our Pops season has always been a special time to feature the magnificent talents of our Pacific Symphony musicians,” he adds. “The music of Mancini provides the perfect opportunity for our audience to hear these superb artists as they bring such beloved music to life. Each Pops weekend is truly a celebration, and I look forward to sharing the excitement with our fantastic Pops audiences!”

In fact, the condition even has a name - submental fullness, or fat under the chin. It can make you look older and heavier, and it can be difficult to get rid of on your own. Because submental fullness can be influenced by multiple factors – such as genetics, weight gain and aging – sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, your double chin may not go away.

4 Tips to Stay Fit While Traveling
If summer travel plans frequently keep you away from home, it can be a challenge to maintain your regular fitness routine. With dedication, planning and a little creativity, you can use these tips from fitness entrepreneur Cassey Ho to maintain your workout regimen no matter where your travels take you. 1. Pack for Fitness Before your trip, research the hotel, nearby fitness facilities or area parks and pack accordingly. Be sure to bring along the essentials, such as athletic shoes and exercise clothing; easily portable equipment such as a jump rope, resistance bands or yoga mat; and technology to support your workout like your smartphone and headphones. Like the right apparel, footwear and diet, it is also important to have the right contact lens technology for your eyes. It’s crucial to your performance that you be comfortable throughout the day so you don’t lose focus. “As a fitness trainer, fashion designer and social media entrepreneur, I need a contact lens that’s as high-performing as I am,” Ho said. “Because of their unique water-gradient technology, Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses are so comfortable that I don’t notice

I’m wearing them, which allows me to focus on my workout, not my eyes.” Beyond all-day comfort, daily disposable contact lenses can be a healthy option for your eyes, are easy to use and take up less space when traveling because you don’t need to pack bulky lens care solution and cases. Learn more at dailiestotal1. com. 2. Keep Active as You Go Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, summer travel can force you to sit for long periods. To fit some activity into your travel, wear your walking or running shoes. If you’re traveling by plane, stroll through the airport terminal rather than sitting at the gate if you have a layover or delay. When traveling by train walk through the cars occasionally. If you’re driving, take breaks to get out and stretch. 3. Work in a Workout When you arrive at your destination, set the tone for your trip by working out right away or scheduling time for a workout and treating it as an important appointment. Consider these simple ways to squeeze in some physical activity: Go for a quick run in the area near your hotel – it’s a great way to burn calories, and it’s the perfect opportunity
to explore your destination! Walk the hotel halls – or get your daily steps logged at a local attraction or meeting facility. Take the stairs when possible and use your phone’s GPS to map out a path or find a local park or trail. For a quick burst of cardio, power through a few sets of jumping jacks in your room. If you’ve got space in your hotel room, use your tablet or smartphone to find a yoga or aerobics workout and follow along. Try pushups, planks and squats, all of which rely on your own body mass for resistance. Swim laps in the hotel pool.
4. Make Healthy Dining Choices When dining out, make sensible choices. Take the time to evaluate the menu. Select foods that are steamed, roasted or broiled, and avoid fried foods. Ask for dressings and sauces on the side. If you’ll be in town for more than a day or two, take time to visit a local grocery store to stock up on fresh, healthy snacks, such as fruit, vegetables, hummus and unsalted nuts, for your hotel room. Keeping things simple and staying committed to your routine with these tips will help you to easily keep your health on track during your summer travels.
