Help Protect Our Coast and Shorelines in San Clemente The community is invited to meet at the San Clemente Pier on Saturday, September 19th at 9:00 a.m. to participate in Coastal Cleanup Day. Registration tables will be located just north of the pier where participants will be given supplies and assigned
a location to clean. The cleanup will cover the coastline from North Beach to Calafia. This is a fun event where people join together to take care of our fragile marine environment and show community support for our shared natural resources. This event will end at noon. California Coastal Cleanup Day is
an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup and serves as the state’s largest volunteer event that sees upwards of 60,000 Californians participate each year. California’s coast and waterways collect large amounts of trash and debris that originated from human activities. This debris, if not removed, can be harmful

SAN CLEMENTE-DANA POINT ANIMAL SHELTER BREAKS PREVIOUS ADOPTION RECORD DURING “CLEAR THE SHELTERS” EVENT The San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter participated in the nationwide adoption event, “Clear the Shelters”, on Saturday, August 15th. The campaign was sponsored by NBC-owned television stations and Telemundo Stations Group. With a push to find homes for animals in need, along with reduced adoption fees, the event in San Clemente was a huge success. The San ClementeDana Point Animal Shelter had record adoption numbers for that day, with 25 cats/kittens and 3 dogs placed in their forever homes. This “Clear the Shelters” event
was held for the first time last year in North Texas with over 35 shelters participating, adopting over 2,200 animals in one day. On Saturday this event was held for the second time nationally with over 400 shelters participating, adopting over 18,000+ animals. Young Jumper Champions Crowned at Showpark All Seasons Tournament Blenheim EquiSports is pleased to host the Young Jumper Championships Western League Finals again this year. After three rounds, one on Thursday, one Friday and the last one today, three young champions in three age divisions rose to the top of the results. Jamie Sailor and Flashdance Capture the Win in the Five-Year-Old Division After Thursday and Friday’s qualifying rounds, all ten entries returned for the final round. Two of the ten, Michelle Parker and Cross Creek Farm’s U.S. Warmblood gelding CCF Yasur (Ocean I x Andiamo), along with Jamie Sailor and Felyn Farm’s Hanoverian gelding Flashdance (For Edition x Quinar), jumped through all three rounds fault free. The two talented five-year-olds returned for a jump-off to determine the winner. First in, Parker and CCF Yasur had an unfortunate refusal at fence 1. With the early morning shadows stretched out in front of the vertical, the young horse was unsure until he took a closer look. They finished with a nineteen fault score and time of 55.37. Sailor guided Flashdance smoothly around the course, securing her win with a clear round and an efficient time of 39.84. Danielle Matlock bred Flashdance. Making their YJC debut together, Sailor, assistant trainer at Mike Edrick Stables, and Flashdance, share a strong bond. “We’ve had him since he was three; I broke him,” she explained. “He knows his job. We hardly even school him at home. He loves the show ring and that’s where he will stay!” Michelle Parker and CCF Caramel Are Sweet in the Six-Year-Olds Out of the 24 entries in the sixyear-old division, the 15 who had accumulated the least amount of faults were invited back for the final round. One third of those who returned had a score of zero after jumping clean rounds on Thursday and Friday. By the end of the third round, Emily Esau Williams with Dayla Fischer’s Dutch mare Eranka B (Zacharov TN x Padinus), and Michelle Parker riding Dana Nemeth’s U.S. Warmblood mare CCF Caramel (Durango LS x Contango), remained fault free, which led to another jump-off, this time with two talented young females.
Jamie Sailor and Flashdance Williams and Eranka B laid down a speedy time of 35.96, but with an unlucky four faults at the in of the combination (8a). Knowing what she had to do, Parker skillfully guided her mare, finishing clean and quick in 36.31 for the title of 2015 YJC Western League Six-Year-Old Champion. Parker, thrilled with the win, explained why Caramel is truly part of the Cross Creek Farms family. “My mom, Carol, bred her. I competed on both the dam and sire. The dam was a grand prix horse I had, this was her only foal. The sire I had for a short period of time as a six-year-old, he is a Darco x Chin Chin.” This pair will also compete in the upcoming Blenheim EquiSports $15,000 Six Year Old Young Horse Finals at the Blenheim International Jumping Festival at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano. Nathalie Manning and Doriena Secure the Seven-Year-Old Title Having the same qualifying format as the other YJC divisions, 15 of the 20 seven-year-old entries returned for the third round. zero faults coming into the final day, Misti Cassar and the spotted Selle Francais stallion, Little Indian. The third round changed the top spots a touch. Peter Petschenig with Consider 5 (Pam Bilek & Peter Petschenig, owners), Nathalie Manning and Doriena (owned by Idyllic Imports), and Kasey Ament with Soren Z (owned by KC Jump, LLC), came in with four faults each and all jumped clean in Round 3. Last to go, Cassar and Little Indian, with a score of zero, were unfortunately eliminated due to two refusals. The aforementioned four fault scores were tied and returned for a jump-off to determine the top three placings. Blazing the way with a fast time of 36.46, Petschenig and the Holsteiner stallion Consider 5 (Converter x Landor S), set a tough standard for the rest to match. Manning and the Dutch mare Doriena (Canturano x Grosso Z), executed a handy and clean jump-off track, taking the lead in a time of 35.09. Last in, Kasey Ament and the Zangersheide stallion Soren Z (Sandro Boy x Carthago), ultimately finished in third place with a 4 fault score, in a time of 37.00.

Appreciative, Manning mentioned those that made this win possible. “I am fortunate to have some wonderful clients, Idyllic Imports, who have brought in two horses for me to ride. We bought Doriena about eight months ago,” she said. “She’s a really sweet mare on the ground, super cuddly, and she always tries hard. I’ve been fortunate enough to have Michelle Parker, Alex Alvarado, and Sal Alvarado help me. I want to thank my whole Acorn Farm team - the horses, grooms, family and friends.” Manning is also going to compete at the Blenheim International Jumping Festival in the Blenheim EquiSports $20,000 Seven Year Old Young Horse Finals in just under three weeks. September 11, 2015 5K Run will Honor the Fallen, First Responders & Victims of 9/11 Dana Point is hosting the 4th annual Orange County 9/11 Heroes Run on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 6pm. The 5k race will honor the fallen and support veterans, families of the fallen, and the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group. In partnership with the City of Dana Point and other local businesses, the family friendly 5k will unite Orange County communities in honoring the fallen by challenging the living. Event Highlights: •Candlelight vigil following 5k race & kids fun 1k run. •There are expected by several family friendly, interactive displays from the Marines, local fire stations and police stations. •Following the race, the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group will be serving BBQ items with proceeds aiding efforts to help 5th Marine Division soldiers and their families at Camp Pendleton. The remaining 50 percent will be redistributed to local charities, including the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group. About the 9/11 Heroes Run The 9/11 Heroes Run was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion’s visit to Rescue Team One in New York City shortly before his second
and final combat deployment. Travis, who was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor for the courage he displayed under fire, was killed by an enemy sniper in Fallujah, Iraq, on April 29, 2007. After her only son’s death, Travis’ mother, Janet Manion, founded the Travis Manion Foundation with a mission of honoring the fallen by challenging the living. The 9/11 Heroes Run is one of the Foundation’s pillar programs, which also include Honor the Fallen initiatives and the Character Does Matter leadership program. The Seafest features a Chowder Cook-off, Fisherman’s Lobster, Business Exposition, Arts & Craft Show, Surf Contest, Children & Teen Contests, Children’s Complementary Arts & Crafts, Entertainment and a U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demo Operation all taking place at the historic San Clemente Pier area. Chowder Cook-off The Seafest is famous for its Chowder Cook-Off Competition held on the historic San Clemente Pier. Area citizens, restaurants, and businesses contend for the best tasting chowder this side of New England. Visitors arrive from all over the county to sample the many unique variations of Chowder. 19th Stars & Stripes Tournament with Sammy Hagar Raises Over $2.8 Million for Orange County Youth Organizations With Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sammy Hagar providing a hard-rocking soundtrack, Stars & Stripes tournament organizers reeled in a record-setting amount of over $2.8 million for Orange County children’s charities at its 19th annual fishing, golf and music fundraiser in Mexico, breaking the 2014 record of $2.7 million. More than 600 philanthropically minded participants reeled, putted and rocked to support five Orange County youth organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Miracles For Kids, Orangewood Children’s Foundation, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Orange County, and HomeAid Orange County. The four-day festival, held June 25-28 at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Mexico, pushed the figure of total funds raised since 1997 to $22+ million - more than any other fishing tournament benefiting children’s charities in the United States. This year’s sponsors included SASCO, the Honda Center and the Anaheim Ducks. “We have people coming back every year to participate Board Chairman and Founder Dick Gebhard said. “But most of all, participants and sponsors get – and stay – involved because Stars & Stripes exists to help improve the lives of young people and their families. It’s all about the kids for us.” An elected, volunteer board of directors, “The Knights,” manages the event along with Gebhard, which includes members Tim Ryan, CEO of the Honda Center and executive vice president of the Anaheim Ducks, Al Baldwin, chairman at Baldwin and Sons, Jeff Cunningham, senior vice president of Construction Management Services at Shea Properties, Larry Kirkenslager, senior vice president of pre-construction for Sasco Electric Inc., and Charles Ruck, partner at Latham & Watkins LLP. As a Stars & Stripes beneficiary, charities not only receive much-needed financial assistance to expand their programs but also increase public awareness about their cause through the Stars & Stripes network. Gebhard came up with the idea when he was a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. He wanted to create a fundraiser unlike any other by combining fishing, golfing and music. He came up with the unique event title to emphasize the youth stars helped by tournament fundraising as well as the striped marlin found in the Sea of Cortez. “There’s nothing like Stars & Stripes. Its friends and supporters are some of the most committed philanthropists in Orange County and beyond,” said Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. At sunrise each day of the tournament, anglers launched into the abundant waters off the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, a fertile environment for plenty of sport-fish species. The Sea of Cortez also provided the backdrop for golfers playing at the 18-hole, par 72 Chileno Bay Golf Course, The festival has developed a reputation for attracting famed musicians and bands to perform at the signature Saturday night dinner, during which fishing and golfing awards are presented. This year topped previous expectations, with Sammy Hagar ¬playing a concert on the beach with Cabo Uno. Known to fans as the Red Rocker, Hagar is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee responsible for some of the greatest rock anthems ever written. The Stars & Stripes tournament, benefiting youth charities since 1997, is a world-class charity fundraiser that combines spectacular deep-sea fishing and golf on Mexico’s finest courses with beautiful accommodations and top-notch musical entertainment. Good Vision Helps Children Excel in School
With children heading back to school soon, parents’ to-do lists keep getting longer – shopping for clothes, shoes and supplies, going to the doctor for yearly physicals or checkups, and making appointments at the dentist, among other things. What is easily forgotten or put off is a yearly eye exam. According to a survey conducted by KRC Research on behalf of Think About Your Eyes, about 60 percent of parents do not consider eye exams as a necessary part of children’s health checkup schedule. However, skipping these exams means children run the risk of being unprepared for
school with an undiagnosed vision problem or eye disease. While a cough or hurt ankle might trigger you to take your child to the doctor without hesitation, eye problems are difficult to notice without proactive measures. In fact, 84 percent of parents in the same survey admitted they wait for a child to complain of a vision issue before taking them in for an eye exam. Children, however, especially those who have had vision problems for an extended amount of time, aren’t always able to recognize the problem themselves. Although some schools perform
yearly vision screenings, it is important for parents to know that these tests only gauge a child’s ability to see at a distance. A full vision screening from an eye care professional is needed to evaluate how well a child’s eyes function and how well they focus on items closer to the face. With increased up-close reading, such as that required when using a computer, this information is becoming more critical. The American Optometric Association estimates that as much as 80 percent of what children learn – reading, writing, computer work and day-to-day observation – happens through sight, so it’s more important now than ever to have children tested by an optometrist. According to the American Optometric Association, by age six (before they start school), children should receive at least three eye exams. If you find that your child does need glasses, the experts at Essilor offer these tips for selecting the right eyeglass lenses: • Bright reflections and glare can cause irritation, eye strain, discomfort and damage to your child’s eyes.
