03. RE - IMAGINATION OF CHILDRENS’ PLAYSCAPES Alterations for Malwani, Mumbai Project Type Mentor Year Location

Academic Jamshid Bhiwandiwalla 2019 (Dissertation) Mumbai

Children associate with their surroundings while exploring numerous possibilities within them. Spaces contributing to their leisure and growth are often overlooked in high-density informal settlements. The thesis was an investigation into one such densely populated neighborhood of Malwani, Mumbai. It aimed at understanding the importance of these playscapes and seek alternatives which become spaces for development and exploring interests for children within the neighborhood, while complementing the existing areas of play.

The society has constructed a set of variables, expressing its notion of the acceptable. The unacceptable is that - which transgresses this moral code. The functioning of the Dargah inadvertently suppresses the aspirations of the females, compelling them to become silent spectators within their families, and hence the society. An institution located within the premises of the Dargah, incorporating the traditional practices of medicine (Unani) is choses as a point of intervention. By reviving the traditional practices, it attempts at becoming a part of the existing fabric and the social system.

Sujaw, a village where everyone is a family, always helping each other, working hard to meet their livelihoods. Struggles, however, overpower the lives of the people in this village. Farmers go to their farms everyday, while the women take care of their homes and children. Their lives, eventually have become mundane and repetitive. Lack of a social space, keeps the women locked within their homes, secretly dreaming of escapes from their monotonous lives. The project aims at creating spaces for women to come together, socialize while also engage in activities that have the potential to generate an income for them.
