Wk 3 CONSTRUCTION STUDIO-‐FOOTINGS AND FOUNDATION Glossary Downpipe-‐A pipe to carry rainwater from a roof to a drain or to ground level. Box guAer-‐ is a narrow channel, or trough, forming the component of a roof system which collects and diverts rainwater shed by the roof. Bearer-‐ a carrier of equipment on an expedi=on Fixed joint-‐ joints that cannot move Pin joint-‐ Pin joints provide single-‐axis rota=on func=on used in many places such as door hinges,

ACTIVITY-‐CAMPUS LAB 1 CONSTRUCTING PROCESS To iden(fy the basic structural systems, construc(on systems and materials of Aim: the Pavilion Case Study building and a variety of other buildings on campus. Lot 6 Café (represent on the image on the right) Ø  The material used were mainly concrete and glass Ø  Beam/slum structure Underground car park & South Lawn Ø  Pad loading is present which prevents the carpark from collapsing Ø  the main material used was concrete, this is because concrete is moist resistant material, unlike steel and =mber which will prevent accident such as collapsing due to rust.

Ø  South Lawn is directly above the car park. The trees are in line with the car parks ceiling structure so that it absorbs moisture preven=ng it from reaching the car park. Ø  the ceiling has this cross shaped cress, it main func=on is for air ven=la=on and sprinkler are located on every cross sec=on for safety purposes.

Stairs on west end of Union House Ø  The material used for construc=on was mainly steel Ø  Three types of steel structure were present which were: stainless steel, parallel framed channel and universal beam( I-‐beam) Ø  The stainless steel was used on the handle of the stair as it is smooth to touch( safety factor). Addi=onally prevents rus=ng as steel is coated by nickel, this is another safety factor as it prevent gePng diseases such as tetanus. Ø  The parallel framed channel was used as the main base of the stair case it is created by industrial steel which is more stronger than stainless steel Ø  The stair is suspended by metal rods (tension force) and fixed joint on the ground preven=ng the stair from moving, Addi=onally the fix joint prevent the steel from rus=ng by undergoes galvanizing process. Fixed joint North Court Union House Ø  represents a tension structure where the metal rope is the main support Ø  Columns where the rope are connected are in an angle which increase tension Ø  the cover is in the “curved cone” shape where leads the rain water to one spot. Ø  Drainage system is located underneath.

LEARING LOOP This weeks lecture and reading have broaden my understanding on the concept of moments and equilibrium. Equilibrium can be defined as the sum of moments ac=ng clockwise and an=clockwise equals zero. The pre-‐learning taught me that concept of equilibrium and moments are very significant in real life applica=ons. Cranes are a classic real life example represen=ng the importance of these concept. The arm of the crane is angled usually angle between 45~70, by angling the arm the perpendicular distance between the pivot and load decreases which results in a smaller moment ac=ng clockwise; which, means that less forces require for the crane to come to an equilibrium preven=ng it from collapsing. If the arm of the crane wasn’t angled it would be harder for crane to lig great amount of loads, as it would be hard to achieve equilibrium.
