INTRODUCTION

ABOUT ME

My name is Luke Kim, I am currently in my third year of architecture this semester. I was born in South Korea, and have moved to New Zealand at a young age, and completed my last year of high school at Perth, and ended up coming

to Melbourne. Through my adaptation around varies of different cities, from dense to dispersed, I started to grow interest in architecture by seeing how architecture is heavily influence by culture and function making every architecture unique and fascinating. I always thought architecture as the face of a city; how in every different city there is at least one architecture representing its city. My architecture goal is to one day design an architectural piece that can represent the city that I live in.

CONCEPTUALISATION

architecture for me I believe is not just about the functionality or the aesthetics of the building rather its creating new experience for people ; my previous studio design have all reflected my way of designing; for example during studio water I have explored the experiencial factors of sound; and how the boathouse itself can enhance the sound qualities of nature. For studio Earth, the project was based around peoples field of vision, how it can be used to convey or a rise a question to the users of the importance of nature. My overall exposure to studio is still very shallow, where I have completed design environment, studio earth, studio water and AA visiting school program. Through these studios I have taught myself softwares such as sketchup, photoshop, indesign, autocad and a bit of rhino and grasshopper.

ONE CENTRAL PARK

ATELIERS JEAN NOUVEL

Location: LOT 1 Broadway, Central Park, Chippendale NSW 2008, Australia Design architect: Ateliers Jean Nouvel. Green Walls: Patrick Blanc Project Year: 2014

I

n contemporary urbanized cities it is merely impossible to see any grimps of greenary, due to the conflicting relationship between urban development and nature. One central Park challenges this idea of nature vs urban growth; when seen from far nature almost looks as if its embracing the building. The building represents a harmonies relationship between the urban design and nature, where nature and the building design work coherrently, to fully maximise their characteriestics- The plants grow vertically on to the facades of the building creating a natural shade, enchancing the environment for the inhabitants of the building. The building represents 250 spieces of australian flowers and plants. These plants not only provide shade for the users, but it also decease the CO2 rate dramatically enhancing the users performance and comfort.

referring back to the Designing future, sustainability is a very critical aspect in contemporary architecture. One central park displays a sense of sustainability through its use of plants where extra cost on shading and etc, were replace by greenary. additionally through the use of greenary, it helps to alleviate the detrimental heat island effect present in all urban environments. Overall the one central park is a building at success in incoporating the natural environment into the urban context. This building have brought significant importance and realization of the possible coherency between nature and urban development; how it can be used togther to enhancing the environment we live in.

Inorder to maintain this harmony the design have features such as the installation of motorised mirror which provides plants with sunlight in areas of design where there is no direct contact with the sunlight. “After dark the structure is a canvas for leading light artist Yann Kersalé’s LED art installation that carves a shimmering firework of movement in the sky. This brings a new starlit architectural shape to the One Central Park design.”

IN ORBIT INSTALLATION

“To describe the work means to describe the people who use it- and their emotions.”

T

he In-orbit installation by Tomas Saraceno is a temporary installation to provide users the experience of weightlessness by suspending a steel net structure two-hundred meters above ground. This safety net, covers the distance of 2500 meters square. When viewed from below or from intermediate levels of the Standehaus, it gives the illusion of people floating on the air. In contemporary architecture the exploration of material is very limited where most of the building now a days are created using material such as concrete. Due to this factors architecture nowadays are seen very grounded and static. Therefore through this installation Tomas Saraceno is challenging the notion of contemporary architecture. He explores the nature of floating architecture to examine the relationship between a people movement with the space, which one day will change people perception on architecture and view it in a more wider spectrum.
