01 BRIDGING AS NEW ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE VILLAGE RELIGIONS BRIDGE DESIGN XMU Option Studio Instructor:Zhiye Li Spring 2017 Individual Work
This project explores deeply into issues of "Concept and Symbol", which leaves the usual architectural keywords and realizes concepts and inclinations in a new architectural language. The design explorations center on how to transform the "concept" to aesthetic "images", and finally to "building language"and "construction". Through the transformation, the bridge is in the simplest construction form, but in the most complicated way - the history of folk belief and Christianity in Huian county. The twisted relationship of these two religions on the river generates the entrance, the corridor and the exit of the bridge by using the logic of geometry to regulate the walls and division. The relationship between the beliefs of the two villages is shown through space separation. The conflict and integration of the two religions are contained in the new material bridge body with traditional form. Can architecture itself tell the stories, can it illustrate the intentions without help, or can it be the one who enjoy its own prosperity? The final result of the design, rather than an architecture and a visual, is an architectualized "concept", and a visualized "symbol".
01 Division of river Fuyin village is on the west bank of the river. Lianfeng village is on the east bank of the river. The river has become a natural barrier between the two villages.
02 Village belief More than 90% of people in Fuyin village believe in Christianity. Less than 5% of people in Lianfeng village believe in Christianity, which means most of people in Lianfeng village believe in the local religious.
03 Road network system Both villages have a mature network system. Two villages are connected through two bridges that can be opened to traffic.
04 Important places There is a small Christian church in Fuyin village on the west bank of the river. On the east bank of the river lies an ancestral hall of Lianfeng village, which serves as a local center for activities related to the local religious.

Huian county river corridor:Artery and Connection Huian`s growth as a county relies on one river corridor that flows straight to the sea. The river acts as a main artery, connecting several villages and supplies water for these village lands.Whatever the beliefs of the villages, people there could still live in peace for a long time. The river, as the geographical and spiritual connection of different villages, is irreplaceable and important.

02 FOLDS OF MEDIA URBAN COMPLEX BUILDING DESIGN XMU Required Course Instructor:Shaodong Lee Spring 2017 Individual Work
The focus of this course was vocabulary and folds: first, to create an urban framework to synthesise the seashore area of Xiamen,Lujiang Road - currently a dispersive district of all kinds-of business mode, intersecting of the traditional blocks, second, strategically position a public recreation facility within the site as the primary catalyst for further urban living function. The project is situated in a special zone besides the Taiwan strait. The area is also the site of a powerful business center formed in recent years. The people living here includes workers, local residents, shoppers, business man, artists and so on.Therefore the primary function and clear classification become critical elements in complexing the district. By guiding people into the building with a directional steel framework, this kind of guidance expands the city road at the same time.Within this framework, the recreation facility becomes a hub that provides culture and leisure to locals, travelers and workers alike.
Regional logical classification:Vocabulary Extract Through the comprehensive extraction of urban elements in Minnan region, the multilevel branches are generated, and the new connections are generated between each branch - different branches join together to form a new and integrated branch. Finally, the most intensive vocabulary will show what the urban complex require. From these "imports",five words emerge-Coalese,Openness,Function,Seperation and Multiple.

Folds of Media:Complex Composition In urban complex, there is more spaces for elements which includes a variety of media. Fold the elements of the building vocabulary. These folds create the surfaces, facades, plans and finally the landscape. Folds are in line with the streets` main directions around the site.

Atrium Space: Communication, Rest and Viewing Towards Taiwan Strait, the atrium is not only a place for people to rest and view, but also the transition space of theater and concert hall. The connection of vertical transportation makes he atrium the most active area in the entire building.
Public Gather Plaza The main atrium creates a concentrated area from the erosion of the main road through the orientation of the steel frame which ends in the sky.
Extending the Street The urban atrium is visually an extension of South HuBin St. It invites the eye inside into the building plaza, which also serves as a viewbox of the strait.
03 SPONGE AT CROSSROADS COMMUNITY DESIGN XMU 2018 Graduation Design / The "Street-Corner Urbanism"Conceptual Design Competition Instructors: Jie Han, Liangliang Wang, Suyv Li Site: Waterloo, Sydney, Australia Team work with Yvyang Lin
After hundreds of years of development, Sydney has experienced many milestones in its history. Population expansion brings the economy, creativity, labor force and many other issues, such as housing and employment. Green Square is an area which is going to be updated by the Sydney government to develop surrounding areas. In the new round of city renewal, what should Waterloo and its residents do? We came up with the "Urban Sponge Strategy". Sponges have the ability to absorb water and release it when under pressure. Think of water as people, money, ideas, and sponges as people, money, ideas, etc. Sponges are distributed in multiple points in the city, forming an invisible net, which is composed of points and surfaces, forming the regulator of urban development and can maintain the stability of urban development under certain conditions. At the crossroads of Waterloo, in a new round of urban renewal, Waterloo needs to be able to adapt to regional development and changes of regulator, which could deal with excessive saturated population, capital, ideas, etc., and can slow down the pace of city , in order to maintain the balance of urban development. At the same time, sponges provide the residents with a place to think about the future in the fractious social development.
AUSTRALIA
NEW SOUTH WHALES
GREATER SYDNEY
Prediction of Future Urban Development Green Square is updated from the beginning to the saturation state, and then gradually the development will become stable. The industry, economy, art, and policy of the city will change accordingly, and so will the people in the city. These changes cannot be accurately predicted. In order to seek stable development in unstable changes, it is necessary to use the sponge type urban regulator to absorb and release the resource.
Concept Generating The image of sponge was extracted by topology. In these diagram formed, we can find attractive uncertain entrances and exits. This is one of our strategies for dealing with street corners. At the same time, under the influence of topology, the original diagram has formed a variety of building options. Finally, grid depends on its advantages of prefabrication, low cost and high flexibility and finally becomes the final and best solution.

The Year 2028 In the next decade, Waterloo in the case of a large number of entrepreneurial population influx will form an independent business. People choose the nearest office space, and gradually expand their business space through building variability. The Year 2018 At the beginning of construction, with the development of surrounding business forms and the entry of some small business spaces, the freedom brought by customization is not only for living space but also for the development of many business forms. The Year 2048 With the development of regional update process, variability and stable gradually formed a kind of balance between human and space, and space to new people and left others and space, to form a true dynamic response of regional development.

04 FLYING CAGES VIEWING GALLERY IN RED BEACH Guyu Cup-Sustainable Architecture Design Competition Instructor:Hong Shao Summer 2016 Individual Work
Red Beach , located in Dawa County, Panjin, Liaoning, China, is famous for its landscape featuring the red plant of Suaeda salsa of the Chenopodiaceae family. It is based in the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world. The landscape is composed of shallow seas and tide-lands.The largest reed marsh in Asia is also located here, attracting many tourists. The red-crowned crane also reproduces here and it is also the endangered black-mouth gull's largest breeding area.More than 260 kinds of birds and 399 kinds of wild animals live here. The region located on the semi-circular natural island called "Moon Island". Tourists are attracted to the Moon Island to see Suaeda salsa, birds, and other coastal species.Tourism has recently becomes a significant new contributor to the province`s economy. The government has vigorously developed the tourism industry around the island. The main focus of this design is on the environment-friendly using as well as tourist using.Through the analysis and processing of the tourism resources in the area, the most appropriate form of the island is integrated according to the needs of different tourists.Visitors can freely watch grass on the ground and wetland birds in the distance at multiple angles in this structure while reducing the area of the structure's contact with the ground means protecting more wetland plants.

Red Beach is close to Erdaogou village and the estuary. Tourist-related facilities such as sighting sites, museums, restaurants, exhibition halls and other buildings can only be found in the villages, so it can be seen that Moon Island is independent of the village. The only way to get to the island is Binhai Avenue.
Concept Development 1.Wetland protection. 2.Birds Sighting. 3.Suaeda Salsa Sighting. 4.Integration. 5.Functional Seperation. 6.Streamline.
[1]Bend the straight ornamental road
This step ensures that the impact on wetlands is minimized. People walk in the gallery just like walking on a bridge, connecting the wetlands through the two ends of the bridge.
[2]Multi-directional mesh surface
The transparent skin means that visitors could see the trajectory of birds more intuitively in every angle. Besides, these reticular grids form several viewfinders for the bird lovers.
[3]Floating platform inside
Floating platform ensures that people's attention can reach the Suaeda Salsa. Within the gallery people will see various plants that grow freely and naturally under the bridge.
[4]Twisted mesh bridge
Point [1][2] are integrated into generating a mesh structure-supported bridge.Twisted structure has become the source of the ultimate overall supporting.
[5]Service spaces
Embed function block between the twisted mesh bridge body.
[6]Adjust the path

05 LOST FOR MEMORY REGIONAL VILLAGERS ACTIVITY CENTER DESIGN XMU Required Course Instructor:Hongliu Tang Fall 2017 Individual Work
Courtyard house has become the representative typolgy in Minnan area since 1000 years ago. Lanes between courtyards have become a common memory of localTaiwanese generations.Based on the consideration of local settlement planning, local residential scale, spaces are distributed by different scales of courtyards and lanes, making villagers feel familiar and willing to work and play here. To some extent, Minnan Lanes reflects traditional Chinese philosophy towards human and nature. People can feel the seasonal changes of day and night through the courtyard. The locals make the most of the architectural space by making good use of framing.Chinese ancient people have used this method to revitalize the courtyard atmosphere. In this project, topology is used to restate the courtyard in Minnan area.On the basis of respect for the Chinese classical courtyard, reorganize the old memory of the villagers into another degree of reappearance
Traditional Courtyard Typical quadrangle can be understood as a collected spaces of solid and empty,or functional space and free space. We can inherit the traditional courtyard pattern and express it in new architectural language.
Multiple laneways
Multiple laneways parallel, dispersing the flow of a single streamline into several ways.
Exit node
The exit node of the roadway connects the various spaces on either side of the roadway.
Activity center arrangement
The characteristic creates a spatial trait about lost and found. The experienct is various and the path is clear and would not overlap mutually. The wall`s topological fold surfaces blur the boundary of buildings and the yards.
Winding roadway
The use of zipper-like flow lines can greatly enhance the length of the streamline.
Corresponding to the yards
The traditional method of landscape design has a new interpretation of the new structure and materials in this activity center.
Corresponding to the Activity venue
Some abandoned building sites have been used as a crowd's activity square, which corresponds to the idea of using a low wall to create a outdoor stage.
Corresponding to the partition board
In ancient China, the door of the partition was used to transit the space. In order to achieve the same goal, the doors in the activity center are also arranged regularly and thoroughly.
Overlapping gables
The wall form of traditional Minnan dwellings is extracted to form the new walls and roofs . These walls are arranged in order to form a grid pattern with courtyards.
