Adult Classes CERAMICS Beginning Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Learn how to create basic pottery forms, such as a cup, bowl, and plate using a potter’s wheel. This class covers techniques such as centering and throwing a cylinder, while emphasizing both function and aesthetics. Mondays, July 6 - August 24, 6-8:30pm Cost: $180, plus $35 materials fee Intermediate Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Improve your skills on the potter’s wheel in this ceramics class for students with previous exposure to wheel throwing techniques. Session I: Wednesdays, July 8 – August 26, 6-8:30pm Session II: Thursdays, July 9 – August 27, 6-8:30pm Cost: $180, plus $35 materials fee Advanced Wheel Throwing | Instructor: Jane Hendley Refine your skills on the pottery wheel in this class. Students will concentrate on complex forms and develop techniques that combine all aspects of clay construction. Tuesdays, July 7 – August 25, 6-8:30pm Cost: $180, plus $35 materials fee Handbuilding | Instructor: Jane Hendley Learn how to construct clay objects or utilitarian forms, while exploring traditional handbuilding methods such as coiling, slab building and more! CONFECTIONARY ARTS Cake Decorating & Design | Instructor: Ann Spark Learn basic confectionary arts skills while designing and decorating cakes. Prepare, frost, and decorate with a variety of techniques using buttercream icing. Round, star, leaf, and specialty tips will be used to create borders, flowers, and unique seasonal and special occasion decorations for each cake. Prepared and frosted cakes required for most classes. Most supplies included. Cake Decorating & Design with Fondant | Instructor: Ann Spark A continuation of Cake Decorating and Design where students explore designing and decorating cakes using intermediate confectionary arts skills and fondant icing. Prepared and frosted cakes required for most classes. Most supplies included. DRAWING Intro to Drawing – Enjoying the Act | Instructor: Matt Genier New to drawing or can’t connect the lines? This one-shot workshop will cover the simple steps of identifying your subject, how you want to convey your message, and how your artwork can evolve naturally when you relax, breathe, and let each stage lead to the next. Medium will be pencil and pen on paper. Explore illustrating in black and white then add watercolor washes from florals, still lifes, and photographs. Topics covered include pointillism, cross hatching, use of positive and negative space, shading, watercolor washes and elements of design. Tuesdays, July 7- August 25, 7-9pm Cost: $145, plus materials list available at www.artsglenallen.com Zentangle Basics | Instructor: India List Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful abstract images by drawing simple receptive patterns on small paper ‘tiles’ using ink pens. This relaxing and fun art form is great for those who think they aren’t creative or for artists looking to add pattern to their current work. If you can draw a line and a circle you can create unlimited designs! Saturday, August 8, 10am-12pm Cost: $20, plus $10 materials fee

NEW! Zentangle Dare | Instructor: India List Do you Zentangle? If you have already taken a Zentangle class, you’re invited to return for this fun project and to meet other Zentangle students. Participants will be given a pre-strung sheet with a design for them to complete with their own pens, colored pencils, and markers. After a review of some tangles, enjoy time with new friends to create and mingle! Saturday, July 11, 10am-12pm Cost: $12 NEW! Comic Book Basics | Instructor: Matt Genier In this intermediate drawing class, learn how to organize and convey your visual message through three panel comic strip storytelling. Walk through the basics of pacing, timing, and tone. A basic grasp of figure drawing in a “cartoonish” way is a huge plus. Materials and templates will be provided. FIBER ARTS Felted Jewelry | Instructor: Tonya Utkina Learn how to wet felt wool to create beads in various shapes such as round, oval, flat disk, etc. and then assemble your own necklace, earrings or bracelet. Students will make jewelry from an assortment of wool fibers in different colors. Bring rubber gloves if you are not comfortable wetting your hands in soapy water. Tie-Dyeing with Acrylics | Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Create one-of-a-kind garments or fabrics using various tying, folding, dripping, dunking, and painting techniques. Bring in white, light, or stained clothing or fabrics and give them new life. Mix colors and visual textures you can’t get from a kit. Take home wet works and directions on heat-setting. Saturday, July 25, 1-5pm Cost: $45, plus $30 materials fee. Students provide white or light fabrics or garments (bring more than you think you’ll need) and white on white print fabrics (optional).

JEWELRY DESIGN NEW! Rainbow Squares Bracelet | Instructor: Zoya Gutina Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Master beading artist, Zoya Gutina, guides students to create the seemingly complex Rainbow Squares Bracelet design using Japanese seed beads of different types. MOSAICS Smashing Pots! Pique-Assiette Mosaics | Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Learn how to make a mosaic image from start to finish using the pique-assiette style. Pique-Assiette mosaics are created using broken ceramics and found objects. Students will learn to design, layout, set, and grout a small mosaic for in-home décor. MUSIC Develop new musical skills or improve upon what you have already learned with these individual lessons intended for the beginner to intermediate student. Covered in this course are: proper flatpicking and fingerpicking techniques, instrument selection, tuning, systems for learning the notes on the fretboard, basic standard notation, tablature, and chord reading, mapping and melodies, and the C-A-G-E-D chord system. Jump start your musical pursuits while avoiding bad habits and pitfalls beginners often fall prey to. This course is designed for adult students who have little to no experience and beginners looking to fill in gaps in their fundamentals. Saturday, July 18, 10am-2pm Cost: $70 Six String Primer – The Advancing Guitarist (Part 2) | Instructor: Thomas Wakefield Continue the study of the guitar from Part 1. The construction of scales and arpeggios are presented in conjunction with basic chord formations beyond open chords. The relationships of scales used for melodies and improvisations, and moveable major, minor, and 7th chord forms is the focus of this session. Scales presented include: Major Scale; the Major & Minor Pentatonic, and the Blues Scale. This session will end with students creating a basic blues chord progression, playing a simple melody with it, and an introduction to improvisation. This course is designed for adults who have completed Primer 1 and are on the level of late beginner/early intermediate guitar with a rudimentary knowledge of reading standard notation and chord symbols. Saturday, August 22, 10am-2pm Cost: $70 Uke-A-Rama – Intro to the Ukulele Instructor: Thomas Wakefield Welcome to the fun, highly portable, and easily accessible world of the ukulele. Journey through the history and culture of the uke and basic musicanship and techniques for creating music with this fantastic instrument. Basic chord shapes and strumming, as well as melodic single note playing will be covered. A basic knowledge of music reading will be helpful but not necessary. PHOTOGRAPHY Basic Digital Photography | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Learn about aperture and shutter functions and how ISO affects exposure. Compositional elements and guidelines are offered to improve images. Students will also learn how to best use their camera’s built in flash. This class covers variations in different focal length lenses and which lenses to use to achieve desired results. Students are encouraged to have a digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses for this class. Session I: Tuesdays, July 7-28, 10am-12:30pm Session II: Wednesdays, July 8-29, 6:30-9pm Session III: Tuesdays, August 4-25, 10am-12:30pm Session IV: Wednesdays, August 5-26, 6:30-9pm Cost: $120 How Your Digital Camera Works | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Learn how to use your digital camera properly without relying on the automatic setting to know what to do. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview on all the operations of your digital SLR camera. Cameras with interchangeable lenses are preferred for this course, but not required. Saturday, July 11, 10am-4pm Cost: $75 Digital Photography II | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Expand your photographic vision and knowledge as we delve into the next steps in the digital photography experience! Class will focus on portraiture, painting with light, night photography, and documentary work. Students will need access to a tripod for the night photography portion of the class. Session I: Thursdays, July 9 - 30, 6:30-9pm Session II: Thursdays, August 6 - 27, 6:30-9pm Cost: $120 Adobe Lightroom | Instructor: Arthur Stephens Lightroom has become the leading program in the photography industry for organizing and editing images. In this workshop, learn to import, archive, and edit your digital photos. Students with Lightroom loaded on their laptops are encouraged to also pre-load photographs and bring a thumb drive with at least 30-50 images to learn the workflow. If you do not already own the program, download the 30-day trial program at www.Adobe.com prior to class. Students without laptops may learn about the program and workflow via handouts on basic functions of importing, watermarking, archiving, renaming, editing, and more. PAINTING From Drawing to Painting | Instructor: Jan Shropshire Are you interested in making the transition from drawing to painting? Want to learn more about the properties of paint? How does color work? What is the difference between value and intensity and why does it matter? Bring your brushes, paints, and paper or canvas to discover how it all works. You will leave with at least one completed painting and a broad knowledge of how a painting comes into being. Sunday, August 9, 1-3:30pm Cost: $35, plus materials list Pastel Painting & Drawing | Instructor: Linda Leah Wolitz Indulge your inner artist with this vibrant and beautiful medium! Beginner and experienced painters alike will enjoy drawing and painting with pastels from photographs or still life. Pastels are a dry form of pure pigment mixed with a binder to hold the color together. They offer the same bold color as oil paints minus the liquid and the mess! Weekly demonstrations include discussion of the medium as well as individual painting and instruction. Bustin’ Loose: Watercolor Experimentation (Ages 15+) | Instructor: Roz Berlin Time to bust loose from traditional watercolor techniques and materials and experiment with painting on Yupo, Masa paper, canvas board, and decorative papers, as well as using acrylic mediums and Gesso. An introduction to liquid concentrated watercolors and acrylics will be explored. Mixed Media will be the main focus. Session I: Mondays, July 6 – August 10, 6-9pm Session II: Wednesdays, July 8 – August 12, 9am-12pm Cost: $160, plus $40 materials fee Summer Breeze Watercolors (Ages 15+) | Instructor: Roz Berlin Chill out with a multi-level watercolor class designed to inspire novice through advanced painters in a relaxed and fun setting. Students may work on personal projects or try creative summer themed paintings. Tropical and Summer color charts will be studied and created by students. The goal is to PLAY with your paints! Students will learn to paint orchids, bamboo, plum blossoms and more while exploring the relationship between artists and their work. Encaustic Painting (all levels) | Instructor: Lynda Ray Create dynamic works of art using melted wax as you explore encaustic painting, a process that produces luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Beginners as well as working artists are welcome! Demonstrations and experimentation allow students to learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, and texture and collage. Students can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the series, student will be familiar with a range of techniques they can use later to develop new work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. Portrait Drawing/Painting | Instructor: Scarlett Sams Learn to create portraits from your favorite photographs… it’s easier than you think! Starting with the face, students will complete a portrait in the medium of their choice. Assisted by a live, clothed model, students will study faces, skin tones, drapery, lighting, shading, color, and elements of design in their work. Student provides materials according to the medium of choice (i.e. graphite, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, etc.) as well as a pad of newsprint, graphite pencils or sticks to each class for warm-up exercises, and photographs to work from. Mondays, July 6 – August 24, 7-9pm Cost: $145, plus $20 model fee; student provides own materials Abstract Acrylics | Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Abstract painting is a great, low-pressure introduction to materials and techniques for beginning artists as well as a fun way to shake things up for working artists. Look to painters of the 1940’s and 50’s for inspiration. Artists of the Abstract Expressionism movement encompassed a broad range of styles and approaches in their work. Students will combine ideas to make new, original works. Simply Making Art – Drawing & Painting | Instructor: Richard Dawson Can’t draw worth a lick, but would still like to make art? This workshop will focus on how to simplify things that we see and still make creative, interesting and expressive art. Hone and improve the skills you have while discovering ways to work within your means and have lots of fun in the process. PRINTMAKING NEW! Paper Marbling: Acrylic Marbling and Japanese Suminagashi | Instructor: Lindsey Mears Participants will learn two methods of paper marbling, one with acrylic and watercolor pigment manipulated on a thickened liquid, the other a Japanese technique of floating inks on water. Both yield a multitude of undulating patterns and decoration, often seen in historic endpapers. Students will learn the basics of materials and techniques, so they can recreate the set-up at home, and spend the majority of the day making their own marbled papers. Paper preparation and finishing will also be covered. All materials provided. Saturday, August 1, 10am-4pm Cost: $100, plus $25 materials fee NEW! Mixed Media Printmaking 101 Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Experiment with collographs, styroprints, nature prints, packing prints, screen prints, and plexiglass monoprints. Make plates out of everything! Print with water soluble and oil based inks. Make quick tests and build up rich layered images. Drawing skills not required. Watercolor for Teens (Ages 13-17) | Instructor: Lizzie Brown Learn basic color mixing and the behaviors of watercolors to make the best use of this medium. Through play and experimentation, see how different methods and colors affect shape and depth in your paintings. Create abstract and landscape paintings on paper. Shrinkydink Jewelry (Ages 12-17) Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Use shrinkable film to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, pendants, or key chains. In this magical process, use sharpies and colored pencils to create colorful, icy designs. Watch as we bake the film and it shrinks to become hard. You may have used this material as a kid, but create unique personalized jewelry that has the mark of your unique style. Embellish with beads to complete jewelry pieces. NEW! Down on the Farm: Green Gardens, Cool Crops, & Animal Friends! (Ages 6-13) Instructors: Edible Education & Young Rembrandts From the Kitchen: If they grow it, they will eat it! Students in this class will have an opportunity to begin their summer gardens with seedlings planted in class. From seed to sensational suppers and snacks and sweets, students will create awesome Mexican dishes with cilantro, cookies from sunflower seeds, and soup from squash, and of course our specialty – kale chips, are among the class offerings. From the art studio: Life on a farm cannot get any more beautiful. Artists will use pastels, markers, sharpies, colored pencils and more as we complete beautiful still life art, animal art, and graphic designs related to farm life. From horses to kittens, to bunnies and more, you will have a blast! Who knew drawing flowers and plants could be so much fun? Animal Planet – 2D & 3D Super Art Experience (Ages 6-13) Instructors: All Fired up & Young Rembrandts An exciting workshop for artists that love animals and art! This animal adventure will take us to different continents and habitats from all over the globe. Half of each day will be spent working with clay creating three dimensional animals of all shapes and sizes. The other half of each day we will be creating two dimensional drawings of our animal friends. Using various drawing tools, artists will learn tips and techniques to bring each creature to life. Spend some time learning to create animals using cartoon skills. From fur, to scales, to feathers, and more, this workshop is sure to excite the animal enthusiast! CONFECTIONARY ARTS FOR KIDS Cake Decorating & Design (Ages 7-12) | Instructor: Ann Spark Explore basic skills in the confectionary arts designing and decorating cakes with your own personal style. Prepare, frost, and decorate cakes with a variety of techniques using buttercream icing. Round, star, leaf, and specialty tips will be used to create borders, flowers, and unique seasonal and special occasion decorations for each cake. Cake Decorating & Design with Fondant (Ages 7-12) | Instructor: Ann Spark A continuation of Cake Decorating & Design where students explore designing and decorating cakes using intermediate confectionary arts skills and fondant icing. Prepared and frosted cakes required for most classes. Most supplies included. NEW! Horse Drawing Workshop (Ages 6-13) | Instructor: Young Rembrandts An exciting week awaits our students as we explore the wonderful world of horses. These creatures are not only graceful and beautiful animals, but they are also excellent subjects to draw and color. Artists will learn how to draw horses of all shapes, sizes, and styles. These majestic animals will come to life as you create colorful compositions and learn to render them in realistic style. Challenging drawings will reward you with a greater sense of accomplishment. If you love horses, if you love art, if you love to draw and want to get better, than this is the workshop for you! Monday - Friday, August 17 - 21, 1:30-4:30pm Cost: $125, plus $5 materials fee Fling, Scrape, Drip: Abstract Painting for Creative Kids (Ages 6+) Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Have fun playing with art supplies while creating abstract paintings. Learn how to look at the world around you and use those perspectives to create abstract images of still life, landscapes, portraits, and figures as you build a solid foundation in the arts. Children will learn about color, paint handling, and design as well as increase hand-eye coordination. Using brushes, palette knives, and playing with unconventional tools to move paint around, kids can explore the limitless possibilities of their imaginations. Dress for mess! If a class has met the minimum by a week out, registrations for that class will continue to be accepted that week unless the class is full. CLASS REGISTRATION

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are open to adults 18 years old and up unless otherwise stated. All registrations must be accompanied by full payment. Payment types accepted: cash, check*, MasterCard or VISA. Make checks* payable to: The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen or CACGA. Please use the form below when registering. A minimum number of students are required for each class/workshop/camp to be held. Registrations are reviewed 1 week prior to the start date to determine whether or not a class has enough participants or if the class needs to be cancelled. A $10 last minute registration fee applies to registrations received within 7 days of a class starting. * If you choose to pay by check and your check is dishonored, you agree to pay a service fee of $35, or any higher amount allowed by law, and we may electronically debit or draft your account for this fee. Also, if your check is returned for insufficient or uncollected funds, your check may be electronically re-presented for payment.
