TRANSPORTING

PROPANE THE

Right Way BY THE NRVTA

W

e are going to talk about the proper way to transport portable propane. So, let’s say it’s time to fill up your propane. It went out at 2 a.m., so you’re a little grumpy. You throw the propane tank into the bed of the truck and head off to the exchange or refill location. Now here’s the part I want you to focus on: When you’re actually transporting the propane tank, you want it sitting up. When we purchase propane, we purchase it as a liquid, so it sits in the bottom of the tank. Up at the top, we have our safety devices. Propane boils at -44°F, and we have the outside ambient temperature raising the pressure. If we lay the propane tank sideways, we inhibit the safety devices. So this is the worst way to transport a propane tank. As a matter of fact, we can freeze the service valve at the top of the tank. So if you are transporting a propane tank in a very warm climate while laying it on its side for an hour or two, we are enabling the pressure to build up inside the tank, which could result in a sudden burst of propane from the valve. All we need is the slightest

combustion, and well, I’m sure you know the result. Always ensure that your propane tank is sitting straight up during transport and preferably secured vertically; never place it in a trunk. CAMPING DUTCH OVEN BBQ RIBS RECIPE BY KIM HANNA AND BRIAN NEWMAN

S

ome of the best Dutch oven camping recipes are cooked low and slow. A lazy day around camp also means tender, mouth-watering Camping Dutch Oven BBQ Ribs are on the dinner menu. The meat simmers in the sauce for about 6 hours, maintaining the charcoal briquettes or campfire requires a little tending throughout the day, but the outcome is worth it! These ribs will make you lick your fingers! For easier campsite cooking, you can fully prepare the sauce at home, then you just need to cook the ribs at camp. If you do that, you will need to refrigerate the sauce (up to a week) until you are ready to cook the ribs. We like to measure and mix the dry ingredients at home and then assemble the sauce at camp. CAMP COOKING TIP: The key to these Camping Dutch Oven BBQ Ribs being super tender is keeping them submerged in the sauce throughout the cooking process. PROPANE: You can place your oven on a camp stove or RV stovetop as long as you have enough propane to finish the cooking process.

CAMPFIRE: If you have enough hardwood and don’t mind tending a campfire for a long period of time, you may want to cook your ribs over your campfire. Be prepared to monitor the cooking temperature throughout the cooking process so the ribs keep cooking at a low temperature. If the heat is too high, the ribs will have a tough texture so make sure they are not cooking too fast. CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES: We used charcoal briquettes when we made the ribs that are in the photos in this post. If you use briquettes, be prepared to make several batches of 15-20 coals throughout the day. INGREDIENTS 4 tbsp. butter 2 onions chopped 4 cloves garlic minced 3 C ketchup 29 oz. can tomato sauce 2 1/2 c red wine vinegar 1 c unsulfured molasses 3 tbsp. hickory flavor liquid smoke 2 1/2 c brown sugar* 1 tsp. garlic powder* 1 tsp. onion powder* 1/2 tsp. chili powder* 2 tsp. paprika* 1 tsp. celery seed* 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon* 1 tsp. cayenne pepper* 2 tsp. salt* 2tsp. pepper* 3 baby back rib racks NOTE: If you don’t have a deep 12" Dutch oven and you are using a

regular 12” Dutch oven, you may only be able to fit 2 – 2 1/2 racks of ribs. DIRECTIONS: 1. Ingredients marked with * are those that I measure and mix at home and just transport them in a sealed container to the campsite. 2. Build The Sauce in a large saucepan over medium heat. Start by melting the butter. 3. Now add the onions and garlic and sauté until tender. 4. Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, red wine vinegar, molasses, liquid smoke, and stir until incorporated. and tenderness out of this recipe.) You can use charcoal briquettes or a campfire to cook this Camping Dutch Oven BBQ Ribs recipe; either way, you want to monitor the heat throughout the cooking process to cook them at a simmer.

6. Thicken The Sauce, reduce the heat to low and stir occasionally, simmer about 20 minutes or till desired thickness (shorter cooking time = thinner sauce, the longer you cook it, the thicker it will become.) 7. Cut the silverskin off from the back of the ribs. You can use a butter knife to pull it up pretty easily. Depending on where you purchase your ribs, the silverskin may already be removed which is always a nice thing! Next, cut the rack to fit into the Dutch oven; 4-5 ribs per cut works well. 8. Prepare your heat (campfire coals or charcoal briquettes) for cooking with a deep 12" Dutch oven. 9. In a deep 12” Dutch oven, cover 3 cut racks of baby back ribs with BBQ sauce. Camp Cooking Tip: The key to these Camping Dutch Oven BBQ Ribs being super tender is keeping them submerged in the sauce throughout the cooking process. If you can’t get all of the ribs in the sauce, rotate them throughout the cooking process pulling the ribs from the bottom and placing them on top every half hour or so. 10. Simmer for 4-6 hours (6 is better, so make sure you start this meal early enough to get maximum flavor

Tips for New RV Owners HOW DID YOU START RVING FULL TIME, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING FULLTIMERS?

We knew RVing would be a great fit with having little kids and pets. Our favorite thing about being full-timers is the freedom this lifestyle brings for our kids and us. Plus, we love the campground neighborhood feeling. Our kids are growing up outside, running around, and playing with friends for most of the day. As adults, we love the campfires and random morning coffee chats with people in the campground.

can’t wait to head back west. We’ve visited every state except Alaska and Hawaii. We would love to RV to Alaska one day and spend 2-3 months in Hawaii at some point, enjoying some vacation rentals.

trip, Izzy and MJ unknowingly brought home bed bugs from the hotel. After breaking out all over her body in bed bug bites (Izzy was spared), the couple lived in their basement as a pest control service thoroughly treated the house. MJ brought up the idea of renting a camper to stay in their driveway, as it was always a dream of hers to RV after having a Barbie camper as a young girl. So, with an “exorcized” house and the incident behind them, the family

purchased their first travel trailer. The Jayco travel trailer helped them make fond memories. Of course, as RV rookies, it’s also where they learned all about RVing (sometimes the hard way). But a chance meeting at a gas station with a gentleman who was an RV veteran gave them hope. “Just watch. This will become an addiction.” He couldn’t have been more right. Less than a year later, they traded up, welcoming “Nelli,” the MARCH 2022

Newmar Bay Star, to the family. She’s been their “home on wheels,” flagship, and the sixth member of the family (we can’t forget Bowser and Sierra, the fourlegged fur babies).

ONE RETIREMENT PLAN LEADS TO ANOTHER

Izzy and MJ had a great retirement plan. Izzy’s retirement goal is to retire in 2026 when Jason pursues his higher education. Since they’ve been traveling so much already, they agreed that the mosttiming RV lifestyle would be the right fit for them.

So, they plan to relocate from NJ to somewhere in the Southeast and use their new home as a jumping off point for their RV adventures! After several scouting trips in the greater Naples, Sarasota, and Tampa areas, the couple couldn’t find a house that checked off all the boxes. The more they searched, “Plan A” wasn’t panning out. Then they considered something RVers have been doing for decades that has been recently trending.

“MJ brought up the idea of renting a camper to stay in their driveway, as it was always a dream of hers to RV after having a Barbie camper as a young girl.”

AN OLD OPTION BECOMES income, and building THE LATEST TREND additional features Since the early 1980s, the concept of buying deeded RV campsites has given snowbirds and RV vacationers the opportunity of securing property in their favorite campgrounds. Also, from a financial point of view, Southwest Florida has been extremely popular for years, so it would be a wise investment. In October of 2021, after a long search, one truly stood out to them because it had everything they ever wanted. Dog breed restrictions weren’t present, which MJ and Izzy were elated about since they have two happy-go-lucky pibbles (pit bulls), Sierra and Bowser. However, many RV resorts and RVBLOGGER.COM

campgrounds enforce breed restrictions, so finding an RV resort that welcomes all breeds made it that much more appealing. The deliberation of waiting or jumping at the opportunity now didn’t last long since Myakka River Motorcoach Resort in Port Charlotte, Florida, had less than 20 RV lots left. In addition, the Canadian border just had re-opened, and

people were scooping up real estate like wildfire in Southeast Florida. MJ expressed the urgency to Izzy, saying, “We can’t wait to get this. If we wait, they’ll be all gone.” Izzy agreed and decided to move forward with purchasing the waterfront property.

go as smoothly as they had hoped. After getting approved for the loan, they had to have a survey done. They wanted to close by the end of November, but the appraiser was a noshow time after time. The bank had to hire another appraiser after months of delays. Finally, the closing took place on January 28, 2022, after a two-month delay on the appraisal. At this point, Izzy and

WHAT YOU’LL FIND AT MYAKKA RIVER MOTORCOACH RESORT

The RV resort is gorgeous on the Myakka River and is quite a distance from the main road, which really appealed to them. However, the resort is still within close driving distance to:

After becoming familiar with the process of RV lot shopping, MJ and Izzy would recommend looking for certain criteria if in the market for an RV property. After looking at the many RV resorts they saw and their experience, if you’re in the market to buy an RV property, here’s what they recommend:

1. LOCATION IS IMPORTANT

Location is critical for many reasons. Some may want to be close to amenities, such as stores and major highways—especially

066

those who want to rent their lot. Snowbirds have particular preferences, and certain areas like Southwest Florida are highly desirable. You also want to factor in the noise level.

2. ON-SITE AMENITIES AND FEATURES

At the RV resort level, premium campsite features like cement

pads and full-hookups are standard-issue. So, here are the real questions you need to think about:

• DO YOU WANT MULTIPLE POOLS, FITNESS CENTERS, AND OTHER TYPES OF FACILITIES?

• WILL THE COMMUNITY ALLOW YOUR DOG’S BREED?

• ARE COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES HIGH ON YOUR LIST?

• DO YOU LIKE MOTORHOMEONLY PROPERTIES OR MULTIPLE RV CLASSES?

• IS THE CORPORATE OWNER AND HOA FINANCIALLY HEALTHY?

• IF YOU PLAN ON BUILDING PERMANENT STRUCTURES, ARE YOU NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LANDSCAPING AND ITS COSTS?

3.PERSONAL FINANCIAL HEALTH Your financial health is the most significant consideration. Can you afford the down payment, monthly

mortgage, HOA fees, insurance, etc.? Can you sustain the mortgage between rentals?

HAVE THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE WHEN PURCHASING AN RV LOT

Like any real estate investment, buying an RV property is a big undertaking. Think of it as if you’re purchasing a condominium, but you park your RV in it. However, it can also be one of the most

exhilarating times. MJ and Izzy view their lot as an investment. It’s also a safe haven and a place they’ll be able to enjoy their retirement. They see Myakka River Motorcoach Resort as their future home where they won’t have to endure those cold New Jersey winters. Instead, they’ll travel and come back to their little slice of heaven on the picturesque shore of the Myakka River.

hen you're living in a small space, whether it's a cramped apartment, tiny home, or home on wheels, the organization can be a challenge. The lack of space makes it difficult to keep all your daily necessities and all your essentials together. This is even more difficult in a 1968 vintage camper like in our case. Our vintage home on wheels has tested our ability to come up with creative storage ideas as well as the type of products we buy in order to fit the space we have.

“ In this article, we've provided several organizational ideas, from the initial decluttering process to the small changes you can make in your home (whether it's mobile or not) to maximize storage.” or not) to maximize storage. First things first, do a big purge. Before trying to organize your spaces, the most important step is getting rid of the junk that shouldn't be there in the first place and keeping only what you really need. Purge cabinets, closets, or whatever space you need, and then you have a better look at the inventory that needs organizing. The clutter didn't arrive in a day, so don't expect it to vacate in a day, be patient and take your time! Once you have removed the unnecessary things and simplified your belongings, empty out the spaces in need of organizing. In order to maximize your dedicated storage spaces, having them

emptied out allows you to see exactly how to make the best use of the space. From there, you can add bins, storage containers, dividers, and other organizational tools to make the most of these dedicated storage spaces. You want to be able to have all of your essentials while maximizing the space you have! Here are some helpful ideas we’ve done in our tiny home to have all that we need in an organized way! HANG SHELVES: One of the ways we utilize even the smallest of wall space is to hang shelves. This is especially handy if you've got a lot of empty wall space, hanging shelves can help not only decorate your space but create new MARCH 2022

storage opportunities. We bought some shelves from Target that we ended up cutting to size to fit the tiny area of wall space we had in the kitchen which we now use for spices! We also hung a very tiny basket on the other sliver of wall we had for our keys and Eric’s wallet which is extremely helpful due to our lack of counter space! Take advantage of under-the-bed spaces: We have a small nook under the bed that is really just dead space and underutilized! We found some soft fabric

baskets to fill in that space to use for extra cleaning products, clothes, and towels! Having the baskets be soft and pliable made it easier to “mold” them into this untraditional space and the baskets give a clean polished look when looking at the bed. After clearing out all the junk from under your bed, make the most of that space! If you have a larger space under your bed you could Invest in bins specifically designed to slide under the bed to store those extra items while having them easily accessible! Under our actual bed is storage too but is accessible through a small door located on the outside of the camper. We use this storage space for most of our outdoor items such as our foldable picnic table, our 3 mini foldable outdoor tables, our “fire starting kit”, and fire poker, etc. We also have some other unique areas to utilize storage. Our dining area in our

camper has two bench seats, both of which are great storage spaces. One bench is strictly utility which is home to our power panel, small tool kit, first aid, foldable step stool and handheld vacuum. While the other bench is home to our coffee maker (when traveling) our dog’s belongings, toiletries, and extra towels and MARCH 2022

sheets. Grouping similar items together keeps things organized and easy for you to find! USE BINS AND BASKETS WHERE YOU CAN: We can’t mention this one enough! Sometimes, there just isn't anywhere for the items you need to store to go or you have a lot of small little things. Like

“Use bins and baskets where you can: We can’t mention this one enough!”

we mentioned above, we store a lot of things underneath the benches in our dining area. To keep them all organized, they each have their own separate bin. The use of baskets came in handy when we were trying to utilize the space above our bathroom. In our 1968 camper (which we kept the original footprint of) the bathroom does not go from floor to ceiling so in the main part of the camper there is this unique space that was under utilized. So ofcourse, we decided to fill it with more of those soft baskets to store extra snacks and kitchen items! If you have a tiny, unused space, chances are it can be used to keep your home away from home more organized. Like some of the examples we gave above, the use of corner shelves can increase storage space for those tiny unused spaces as well as things like pullout racks can maximize cabinets and drawers.

MARCH 2022

rvblogger.com

078

RV CAMPING

Our bathroom in the camper is smaller than most so we installed a corner shelf to house extra bathroom essentials as there is little to no room in there. We have one “main” cabinet under our stove to store all of our pots and pans, so we installed a pullout rack to make it more accessible-so that we didn’t have to always pull every item out when we needed something! No matter what space you have, organizing it can be challenging. We accumulate A LOT over the course of our lives, and it can be hard to find that happy medium of the things we need, the items that hold sentimental value and the ones we simply don’t need. To wrap things up, we want to leave you with a few takeaways to help organize your space!

SIMPLE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE • START BY DECLUTTERING! BEGIN BY CHOOSING

ONE SMALL AREA TO ORGANIZE — LIKE A DRAWER. • FIND A SPECIFIC HOME FOR EVERYTHING YOU INTEND TO KEEP — FOR EXAMPLE, A BASKET FOR YOUR KEYS.

Don't try to do everything all at once. Schedule limited amounts of time to work on decluttering and organizing on a regular basis.

• GROUP SIMILAR ITEMS TOGETHER, INSTEAD OF STORING THEM IN MULTIPLE PLACES, SO YOU ALWAYS KNOW WHERE TO FIND THEM. You can limit the number of things in your home by getting rid of something old when you buy something new.
