8 TIPS TO KEEP COOL IN SUMMER HEAT BY THE NRVTA

W

e are going to discuss Todd’s 8 Tips for keeping your RV cool during the hot summer months.

The obvious tip in keeping cool is that you’ve got wheels. Go somewhere that isn’t so stinking hot! That one was a freebie. Keep reading for beneficial tips to keep yourself and your RV cool during the summer. All of these tips are easy to do and some only require adjusting your RV habits. For further information on some of these tips, RV Camping Magazine subscribers can access all of our exciting previous editions. For example, Todd teaches us how to keep our A/C working efficiently by cleaning it in our March 2022 edition. Another freebie is to make sure you’re keeping up with your routine RV maintenance checklist 2-3 times a year. Remember, keep your weather stripping and rubber seals soft and pliable. You don’t want them to allow your A/C to escape through gaps. Your biggest areas of concern are the seals for your slideouts and windows.

7. COOK OUTSIDE

Limit using the oven and the gas stove because the heat stays in your rig. Cooking outside will help prevent this from happening.

8. CHECK YOUR STOVE VENT

Make sure that the outside vent cover is not locked in place or you will have no airflow from the stove, through the vent, and out the sidewall.

ntil now, to have a good wireless data connection, RVers needed a device that required 3 SIM cards (AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon) along with a secondary service that uses one of their networks, or a wifi router that was strong enough to connect to the campground’s busy hub.

TRAVLFI JOURNEY1

WIFI 4G/LTE INTERNET HOTSPOT BY RVCM STAFF

Dish Outdoors has created a solution for the triple SIM card nightmare and one monthly bill that comes with it: No SIM Card and No Contract!

TRAVLFI JOURNEY1: THE NON-SIM CARD HOTSPOT

The TravlFi Journey1 is a 4G/LTE mobile hotspot that connects to the strongest cellular carrier wherever you are. All you pay for is the data plan that best fits your needs. And you only have one bill where you pay for the gigabytes you need for the next 30 days. Use that data to stream your favorite movies, complete your work, the kids’ roadschooling, and your RV trip planner’s GPS with virtually no dead zones. Dish Outdoors also offers a cellular signal booster that pairs beautifully with the TravlFi JUNE 2022

“Dish Outdoors created a solution for

monthly bill that comes with it: No

As a TravlFi Journey1 user, you’ll find the combined hotspot and WiFi router secure, convenient, and as free as the RV lifestyle. Features include:

the triple SIM card nightmare and one SIM Card Needed and No Contracts!”

3. LARGE DATA PLANS: From plans beginning at 2GBs for $19/month to the 800 GB plan for $200/month and six other plans in between, you’re sure to find the perfect plan to fit your needs.

1. NO COMMITMENT: No Contracts! The system only uses prepaid data plans for 30-day periods. You can start and stop your plan whenever you like.

4. SECURITY: Having an all-inone private wireless network the size of a personal CD player that saves you storage space and protects your data from hackers.

2. COVERAGE: Finally, you can travel to the RV destination you want virtually anywhere in the U.S.

JUNE 2022

HOW DOES THE TRAVLFI JOURNEY1 WORK?

Instead of a SIM card, the TravlFi Journey1 has embedded software that seamlessly switches to whichever cellular carrier tower has the strongest signal. For further signal strength and security, Dish Outdoors offers the Winegard RangePro RV Cellular Signal Booster and Ring Security System that pair well with the TravlFi Journey1.

Imagine one bill where you pay for the gigabytes you need with no dead zones or the “dreaded buffering circle of doom.”

go on Dish Outdoors’ user-friendly website to upgrade to the higher gigabyte plan. You can also speak with the contact center to prioritize or manually connect to one carrier signal over the others. The point is that the TravlFi will keep your RV wireless data network convenient, safe, and as freeing as your RV lifestyle. You’ll have one affordable bill with a strong data link virtually anywhere.

The only data you have to worry about is the total gigabytes you’re using on your prepaid plan. Dish Outdoors’ team has a whole staff dealing with how much data you've used with each carrier.

LET'S BE REAL: DATA NEEDS FLUCTUATE

Visit the TravlFi Journey1 website for more information. Dish Outdoors also offers the Winegard RangePro RV Cellular Signal Booster and Ring Security System that pair well with the TravlFi Journey1.

GRILL PACK FOIL MEALS BY KARRIE TRUMAN AT HAPPY MONEY SAVERS.COM

oil meals, also known as hobo packs, were made famous by the Boyscouts of America. Some hamburger meat, carrots, and potatoes wrapped up in foil, then placed in the ashes of a fire is good eatin’ for a teenage boy. Add some ketchup for flavor, and your First Class Boy Scout is ready to earn his next merit badge. For those of us with more refined palates, Karrie Truman of the Happy Money Saver created delicious and healthy foil packs that are easy to prepare and grill up perfectly for those that live the RV lifestyle. Karrie’s inspiration came from a supermom friend who was frustrated about having difficulty with menu planning for upcoming RV trips. As someone who enjoys camping herself, Karrie knows the anxiety of planning a camping menu. To help her friend and others in a similar situation, Karrie developed 5 foil packet recipes that you can freeze ahead of time. You can cook the packets on the grill, bake in an RV oven, or at a campfire like a traditional foil meal. Here are two of her more popular recipes.

t’s been a fantastic year for RV Camping Magazine! We’ve had a chance to talk to some of the most fascinating RV Influencers on social media in our first year. They’ve explored America with RVs as small as Traveling Robert’s Winnebago Micro Minnie to Today is Someday Phil and Stacy’s 35-foot Allegro RED 360 Tiffin Motorhome (a.k.a. “Ruby”). Interviewing these influencers gave us some great advice over the past year. We’ve chosen the most memorable quotes everyone said about living the RV lifestyle to celebrate our first anniversary. Our advice would be to buy the smallest RV you think you can [live in] comfortably. It’s always tempting to get a big RV. They show well on the dealer lot, and they can feel so much more like a sticks & bricks house on the inside. But all that size comes at a cost. It’s a lot harder to get them into some of the most beautiful places like State and National Parks, National Forest campgrounds, remote boondocking locations, and other places of dramatic natural beauty. We set out on this adventure, wanting more family time and time to explore the world. We had no idea how much more this lifestyle would bless our family. It has shown us the importance of community. We’ve created the most amazing friendships on the road with people we never would’ve

crossed paths with if it weren’t for RVing. People with different life perspectives have opened our eyes to new ways of seeing the world, changing us as individuals. This lifestyle requires you to work as a team nonstop regarding marriage, parenting, and setting up an RV together. Nothing requires more teamwork than parking an RV. Having less makes you appreciate life and the little things.

Leave room for serendipity in your travel plans. Serendipity means a “happy accident” or “pleasant surprise.” Something fun, useful, and enjoyable was discovered by happenstance along the way. We’ve traveled over 250,000 miles since we started our adventures in March 2012. An editor once told me JUNE 2022

that “every person has a story to tell.” My journalism career proved that very true. Places have stories too. So we like to wander around, chat with people, and take some photos and videos. Usually, we return with more stories than we can publish on our various platforms. That’s a perfect description of what we find every day in this new wandering life in a motorhome. So, for about half to ¾ of the year, we travel North America to discover everyone and everything I missed while working for the newspapers or TV stations.

FEBRUARY 2022 Abby & Jason of RV Miles WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR NEWBIE RVERS?

We tell somebody this at least once a week: Slow down. We understand the deep desire to see as much as possible, whether you have a week of vacation time or are traveling in your fulltime home. But a week in Yellowstone will beat seven days that have you cramming the Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier every single time. RVBLOGGER.COM

You can find so much joy and beauty everywhere in this country, and it pays to take the time to really give an area its due instead of checking off a list of states or famous landmarks as fast as possible. RVing is about slowing down and enjoying the moment, not racing through the list. We’re sure there are plenty of lists back home in your daily life.

n 2018 Mike and Susan of RVBlogger and RV Camping Magazine bought their 2008 Gulf Stream Conquest Class C motorhome on Facebook Marketplace. After 4 years of camping in the Class C, they considered renovating their rig. The outdated look and problematic features had reached the point where it was time to do something about it.

RENOVATE OR REPLACE? WHAT WILL MIKE AND SUSAN DECIDE? BY RVCM STAFF

In their YouTube video called, “Tour Our Class C RV! Finally!” Mike and Susan took you through their motorcoach, highlighting what they like and some of the things they wanted to renovate. The significant features that they were looking to change included: • A more comfortable driver’s seat giving Mike a better driving experience • Making the dinette smaller - it took up too much space • Rearranging the bathroom to make the shower larger • An interior makeover

FINDING THE SOLUTION WHEN YOU’RE NOT EVEN LOOKING

As you might already know, Mike and Susan tour hundreds, if not thousands, of RVs for their YouTube channel. While looking at Class A motorhomes to tour at the Hershey RV Show in 2021, Mike and

As they calculated the time and expense of a major remodel project, they decided it was time to let go of the Class C. Buying a new RV with all the modern features and amenities they truly wanted was more realistic. So, in 2022 they bought a brand new motorhome for their adventures.

WHAT MADE THIS THOR CHALLENGER SO APPEALING

The 2021 Thor Challenger 37FH Mike and Susan bought was a retired floor model replaced by the new 2022 models. It had 1,032 miles on it, and it was virtually brand new! RVBLOGGER.COM

One of the features that caught their interest immediately was that all of the living room seating was toward the front of the RV. This layout allowed the driver and passenger captain chairs to serve as additional living room seating. In addition, everyone had a clear view of the 48-inch televator TV. The theater seats were also very comfortable compared to lounging on the Conquest’s U-shaped dinette. The moment Mike sat RVBLOGGER.COM

in the driver’s seat had to be an awe-inspiring moment since this Thor Challenger would be his. With an adjustable power seat and steering wheel, a massive 10.1-inch touchscreen dash screen, and all the controls at his fingertips, Mike had achieved his dream of a comfortable driving experience. YouTube viewers know that Mike and Susan dislike shower curtains because they’re clingy. So the sliding glass door in the shower made a

huge checkmark on their list of wants and needs. Mike did the “elbow test” on both the rear and midship commodes and both bathrooms passed with flying colors. The king master “tilta-bed” was an easy decision for them. Both Mike and Susan could get into bed on their side, and making the bed was simple. The full-paint exterior and luxury-styled

decor will keep a fresh look. So Mike and Susan can enjoy their new motor coach without feeling like they’re riding in the past.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

So what happened to the Class C Conquest? For RV trips requiring a smaller motorcoach or family camping trips, the Gulf Stream will still have a place in the family.

JUNE 2022

What does the future hold for Mike, Susan, and the Challenger? The two of them will keep a home base in Maryland while they hit the road as 3/4 timers. A A REVIEW OF “RECREATIONAL VEHICLES: A WORLD HISTORY 18721939”

ndrew Woodmansey has become the new authority on RV history. His international study on the development of RVs from the Industrial Revolution to World War II takes his readers on a journey not only on the technological advances but also through the cultural rejection to the widespread acceptance boom of the Antique Era (1872-1939). In his work, Recreational Vehicles: A World History 1872-1939, Woodmansey gives his readers an illustrated history of the most significant countries that developed motorhomes and travel trailers. In addition, the author introduces readers to RV carriages, towables, and motorized coaches they’ve never seen before. Woodmansey starts his first chapter off with an exciting idea. Are today’s RVers drawn to this lifestyle by chance, or is it more instinctual? “Homo sapiens have been around for about 200,000 years, but most of our race decided to settle in one place only around 12,000 years ago…So with around ninetyfive percent of our history being nomadic, it’s no surprise that we still retain some of our traveling genes.”

Has there ever been a stranger idea in the vehicle world than putting a house on wheels and taking it on holiday? Today there are 15 million recreational vehicles, or ‘RVs’ on the roads of Europe, the USA, and Australia. How did this family of vehicles come about? Who were the first recreational nomads? What made them want to take to the road just for pleasure? And, what did the first RVs look like?

Many rare photos of early RVs were uncovered during the research for this book, and some are being published for the first time. These photos shed new light on the history of the RV. The RV family is a global one, with six countries having a strong RV heritage the UK, USA, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
