n this month’s Tech Tip, we’re going to discuss how to check and maintain your RV’s roof seals. The spring rain showers have passed, so the roof is dry. Guess what’s taking place on your roof?

Checki n g YOUR RV

ROOF SEALS BY THE NRVTA

The sealants are beginning to dry, crack, and shrink. Most sealants are made with acrylic, which is water-based; therefore, it shrinks. So we want to get on the RV's roof twice a year to check the seals. Start from the front of the RV on either the camp or road side. Position yourself on your hands and knees and inspect every seal. It only takes a small hole for water to intrude, causing a huge problem. You can go with acrylic-based sealants, typically Dicor Alpha Systems or Dicor, but you may consider going with a different type of sealant. I recommend an AFCAT sealant product, a polyuria, which doesn’t shrink like acrylic. Regardless of which product you choose, be sure to clean the roof’s surface thoroughly, ensuring that you aren’t using a

2. ADD EXTRA CAMERAS WIRELESSLY

Fifth wheel RVers can tie their rear and side cameras into the truck’s dashboard monitor without too much effort today. Would you like to have a front view camera? What about a camera that looks into your cargo bed so you can see the hitch while traveling? All three of the Garmin Vieo Infotainment devices can connect up to 4 additional cameras. If your RV didn’t come with cameras, this is an easy solution to add them wirelessly. Also, with a front camera added, you can take full advantage of the Vieo’s collision avoidance system. It factors in your

tow vehicle and RV’s full length and width.

3. SAVE TIME WITH DIGITAL CONTROLS

The Garmin Vieo uses the EmpirBus™ Connect 50 Wifi Digital Switching System. If compatible, you can use your Vieo Navigator device to drop your jacks, expand

your slides, extend your awning, and monitor all of your holding tanks. The Garmin device replaces your RV’s multimedia component with the premium Fusion Sound System. You can stream your favorite music or TV streaming channels both inside or out in your coach. That includes finally ending the “extra 5 minutes game” with the kids after the third time.

any people have asked the question, “what travel trailer upgrades do I need the most?” To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of the 6 most popular towable trailer upgrades for 5th wheels and travel trailers. Whether you plan on staying at campgrounds or finding an off-grid paradise, all of these upgrades will enhance your RV experience.

1. SOLAR SYSTEMS & BATTERIES

Solar panel systems can be simple plug-andplay kits or a complex labyrinth of wires and components. It all depends on your power needs and house battery storage capabilities. Virtually all RVs have prewired solar ports on the sidewall for portable kits and connections on the roof for mounting panels.

2. GENERATORS

Gas or propane generators are still the most powerful and quickest RV power source. Even if you use one for charging the house battery bank, you’ll want one with you. Some portable generators have 30-amp outlets for your shore power cord. 50-amp RVs can use two gennies with a bridging dogbone device. Full-length travel trailers and many full-profile fifth wheels come with storage bays prewired for onboard generators. Look at propane-powered gennies if you want to go this route.

The Big 3 Cellular Carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon) have data hotspots that pair up with wifi routers and data boosters for RVs. There are also devices that hold up to 4 SIM cards for maximum data coverage. If you saw our RV Gear article in last month’s

Now that you know the most popular travel trailer upgrades, what’s next? How about a U.S. sticker map to show off your RV adventures? Maybe a bumper-mounted grill J U LY 2 0 2 2

eaving your comfort zone as a full-time RVer can feel overwhelming and unrealistic. Yet, for YouTuber Tiffany Grayce, from “Where is Tiffany,” that’s exactly what she did. Tiffany shows us how her dull and redundant lifestyle was the only thing she left behind. However, She found plenty of room in her Winnie camper van for what she loves the most: making her travel dreams come true and cooking.

MEET TIFFANY

“Going on a true journey includes learning and growing.” My full-time RV journey started in 2019 when I hit the road on a quest to explore all the national parks in the U.S. So far, I've seen a total of 35 and counting. I chose to live a full-time RV lifestyle because I wanted to feel like I was on one big endless adventure. I always felt rushed when I was on someone else’s clock during my annual three-week vacation. Living in the same place became boring, and it was time for a change. I named my Winnebago Travato, “Freedom,” because now I can have epic adventures that thrust me out of my comfort zone, yield the best memories, and let me have the most meaningful experiences. Also, I no longer feel like I’m clocking out, rushing RVBLOGGER.COM

my trips, and clocking back into a daily routine that no longer fits who I am.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE RV CAMPING LOCATION, AND WHY?

My favorite camping location would be anywhere along the Oregon coast. I call it the “mystical forested coast filled with lush green vegetation.” The Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful stretches of highway I have ever driven. The natural beauty and scenery are awe-inspiring, with rugged cliffs and rock formations standing tall in the ocean.

WHY DID YOU START YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL, AND WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT IT?

I started my channel to inspire others. When I began to travel solo over 8 years ago, I wished I

had someone that looked like me, that I could draw inspiration from, that traveled solo, but I didn’t. However, I did have a strong desire to see beautiful places and explore the world, even if it meant I had to do it alone. What I love most about being a YouTuber is inspiring others to step outside their comfort zones through my journeys. It’s also great meeting my amazing followers, who I call family. Last summer, I started to create follower gatherings. I have met over 100 followers, and the meetups are a small token

HOW HAS FULL-TIME RVING CHANGED YOU AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD?

RVing full-time has made me realize I've wasted the

majority of my life not living in true happiness. Living the RV lifestyle lets me discover the true beauty of people and the world.

WHAT'S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR NEWBIE RVERS?

Enjoy the journey. Once J U LY 2 0 2 2

you hit the road, you'll find your groove. Don't fear the unknown; try something new. You'll never fully understand your comfort levels until you get outside your comfort zone. Learn to trust your gut and know you can do more than you think. It's okay not knowing everything before you hit the road. Give yourself time to figure things out, and don't be hard on yourself. Going on a true journey includes learning and growing.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE PARTICIPATING IN THE GO RVING ADDAMS FAMILY 2 COMMERCIAL?

Being on the set of a nationally televised commercial is something I will never forget. I was nervous but felt honored and thrilled about the experience. It was my first experience

seeing the filming process for making a commercial. I was amazed at how several long days of filming created a 30-second commercial. But then again, I know how hard it is to find a perfect photo.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR COOKING INSPIRATION?

Cooking soulful dishes comes from my heart and my family’s traditions. I started cooking when I was nine. For my family get-togethers, it was a time of celebration. My six aunts would spend hours laughing while preparing

S IS STARLINK RV REALISTIC FOR RVERS?

paceX’s Starlink for RVs has been the hot topic of conversation among RVers lately. If you’re considering linking to this satellite internet service, here’s what it currently can and cannot do for RVers. Starlink for RVs uses satellite signals to access high-speed, low-latency internet on an asneeded basis at any destination where Starlink provides active coverage. Currently, it costs $135 per month with a onetime hardware cost of $599.

BY RVCM STAFF

1. STARLINK DEPRIORITIZES RV SUBSCRIPTIONS

The Starlink system breaks subscribers into three groups: Commercial, Residential, and RV. RV subscriptions get the lowest priority, meaning that if a particular satellite reaches capacity, it will provide faster signal strength to commercial or residential subscribers before RV subscribers. This hasn’t been much of a problem so far for RVers. But some fear that as more people subscribe to Starlink over time, RVers could end up with slow or spotty service. J U LY 2 0 2 2
