e are often asked which type of lubricant to use for RV rubber seals and jacks. Many RVers don’t know which type to use, so we at the NRVTA looked at the recommendations from some manufacturers and lubricant providers.
Best TYPES OF
RV SPRAY LUBRICANTS BY THE NRVTA
A common point was that they all recommend a lube with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). You’ll find this most often in a spray bottle version. For those of us that aren’t chemists, PTFE is Teflon. Spray cans need some type of pressurized propellant that pushes the Teflon out of the can. Some PTFE lubricants use butane to propel the Teflon, which is oily. So when you use this lubricant, you’re applying oil onto whatever surface you spray it on. Everything you spray butane and PTFE lubricant on is exposed to the outdoor elements: • • • •

efore “Nomadland’s” Fern taught us the difference between “homeless” and “houseless,” Eric Jacobs from Nomadic Fanatic showed America a sustainable alternative RV lifestyle that avoided the trappings of societal expectation. Eric and his cats show his 231,000 viewers big destinations, small roadside attractions, the Mother Road, and everything in between. Join us in our conversation with this 9-year Nomadic Fanatic as he shows us how he does it and what keeps him excited about this RV lifestyle.

039 MEET ERIC
WHEN DID YOU START NOMADIC FANATIC, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A YOUTUBER?
I started my channel in 2013 as part of a senior project for my Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts at The Evergreen State College. My project aimed to capture a sustainable alternative lifestyle that breaks traditional housing norms. I chose the title “Nomadic Fanatic” for my YouTube Channel because it rhymed and was catchy. The first 6 months of videos I filmed were from my college town. I found that the nomad vlogging market mostly filmed on their phones

and didn’t edit their videos too much. So with my education and equipment, I used my editing knowledge-creating an RV travel vlog and quickly drew in viewers. My mission was to live as cheaply as possible traveling in my RV. So for the first 6 months, I prepared my RV with solar and a battery bank for the essentials, playing N64 and Guitar Hero without shore power. I felt compelled to take my first trip to California and back to see how things went. It went so well that I didn’t see a need to return to Washington. So, I kept going. When I received my first paycheck as a YouTube partner, that’s when everything made sense. I went all-in by sharing my life in my RV with my cat.
“Yes, I can maintain full power and ru the batteries all day on a clear day.”
WHAT ARE THE BEST RV RESOURCES THAT YOU USE MOST OFTEN?

I love Harvest Hosts. Rather than wasting money on a campground, I get to boondock for free while supporting local businesses like farms, wineries, breweries, and attractions. My favorite is getting a beer flight sampler at a craft brewery and then taking a 6-pack back to the RV to hang out with my kitties. I also use the Allstays phone app. It pinpoints where I’m at and then shows all the RV-friendly places nearby, like propane filling, dump stations with water fill, and free overnight parking locations. Of course, I love finding Cracker Barrel locations. After an overnight stay, I can get an awesome homecooked meal.

RV CAMPING MAG
HOW HAS FULL-TIME RVING CHANGED YOU AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD?
Sharing my RV alternative no-rent lifestyle was a relatively new idea to the mainstream when I started. I had people mocking me because they didn’t understand my life choices. Even my Dad suggested not to give up the safety and stability of “40 hours a week and a place to lay my head.” In the end, no one could
stop my wanderlust. I love the RV community and found many people that gave up their residential lifestyle of a mortgage, car loans, and careers. I LOVE hearing from my viewers about their adventures since watching me on YouTube, sharing their excitement about an upcoming trip, retirement, or (gasp) selling the house to “be a nomad like you!”. I love this community, and I have found that more and more people are giving up AUGUST 2022
the cookie-cutter life of house mortgage, car loans, marriage, and careers that tie them to a cubicle. More people are looking for alternative forms of making money while enjoying the road in their RV. For example, I have a friend who drives for DoorDash no matter where he goes. A psychologist friend, Zoom calls her patients while parked in beautiful places. The list goes on. It’s awesome to see so many people care less about what’s socially acceptable
043 MEET ERIC
and move towards more self-rewarding paths. My YouTube Channel has given me more confidence to be myself because I know others believe in the same idea of traveling while you can, rather than laboring until you can’t.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAVELING WITH CATS?
I feel for those who travel with dogs. Muddy paws in and out of the RV, potty breaks 6 times a day, picking up poop, finding dog-friendly parks, trails, and eating locations. Cats
RVBLOGGER.COM
are easy. I’m serious! I have 2 felines now, and I can’t imagine traveling without them. They snuggle when I watch TV, sit next to me while editing, and sleep in bed with me every night. They’re complete opposites, but Opie and Tara are my best friends, making traveling purposeful. I took out the passenger seat in my RV (because my only passengers are my fuzzy butts) and put in a LitterRobot automatic smart litter box. It cleans the litter after each use and keeps the RV scent-free. All 3 of us love it.
044
RV CAMPING MAG
“The great thing about being a YouTube Influencer is that my followers push me to succeed.”
I also give my cats outdoor time to constantly interact with new sights, smells, and people. I have a cat tent that secures them outside to enjoy the fresh air. I take them in a cat stroller when I go to outdoor flea markets. We’re working on leash training so they can go wherever they choose once they gain confidence. Traveling cats get much more stimuli than indooronly cats—noises, smells,
motion, new people, etc. So I try to let them explore a lot so they aren’t “scaredycats.”
HOW HAS YOUR 100% SOLAR POWER RV CHANGED THE WAY YOU TRAVEL AND CAMP?
Solar was priority 1 when I bought this latest RV in March. Using all the appliances and outlets in my RV when I’m lot docking is priceless. My solar system includes: AUGUST 2022
• 1,280 watts of solar panels • 5 Battle Born lithiumion batteries • A 3,000-watt Victron inverter • Phone app energy monitoring and control • Smart Start remote RV ignition system installed by Modified Auto of East Alton, IL
045 MEET ERIC
Yes, I can maintain full power and run the A/C off the batteries all day on a clear day. This lets me keep the cats cool while filming. My SimpliSafe RV camera system allows me to check in with live video outside and inside the RV. It has a thermometer and an alert in case the RV gets beyond the “kitty comfort zone.” Creating power myself and enjoying the peace of wideopen spaces is priceless.
You won’t ever find an RV outlet at the prettiest boondocking places. However, I still need fresh water and dump stations, so I take a break every 1014 days by going to an RV park. I refill my water, do laundry, and dip in the pool.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY YOU HAVE FOUND TO STAY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET?
Staying connected on the road has been an everRVBLOGGER.COM
evolving situation over the years. I began by parking near Starbucks locations to upload videos. Years later, I added a wifi booster to pick up free wifi from 1/2 mile away. I tried other “hack-type” methods, but they were only a short-term fix. I’ve been using Nomad Internet for over 2 years, and it’s unlimited mobile internet with any cellular carrier. I chose AT&T
046

because I have Verizon for my iPhone.
WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
I’ve knocked some things off the bucket list, like the hot air balloon ride at
I was awkward, shy, and not comfortable with public speaking.
Also, I want to travel abroad and see other countries. One day I’ll finally get to zip line. Unfortunately, every time I try, it’s closed due to high winds.
My Channel forced me to open up. No one can “teach” someone those skills unless they have no choice but to get used to them.
WHAT IS YOUR WEAKEST QUALITY?
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR OUR READERS TO CONNECT AND LEARN FROM YOU?
My weakest quality is procrastination. The great thing about being a YouTube Influencer is that my followers push me to succeed. Without YouTube, I wouldn’t have grown into the man I am today. When I first started, AUGUST 2022

MOTORHOMES
C 10 EFFECTIVE HABITS TO INCREASE YOUR GAS MILEAGE
ruising down the road with that panoramic windshield and reclinerlike pilot chair makes the motorhome lifestyle worth every penny. Then it’s time to fill up that gas tank! Ugh! The average Class A and C motorhome fuel economy typically ranges between 7 and 12 miles per gallon. Below are some great driving tips to get the most mileage out of that 80-200 gallon fuel tank.

1. KEEP YOUR TIRES PROPERLY INFLATED
The tires on your motorhome are critical for fuel efficiency because you lose gas mileage when they’re low. A good tire pressure monitoring system will show you if you need to inflate your tires so you can maximize your fuel efficiency. AUGUST 2022

conditioners while traveling. Dashboard air conditioners can lower your gas mileage by up to 25%. And, if you run your generator to power your rooftop A/C you can burn up to an additional gallon of fuel per hour. Instead of using the coach and dashboard air conditioners, open the windows to stay cool and increase your mpg.
6. AVOID HIGH TRAFFIC
Idling through commuter
and heavy traffic is the worst gas killer. RVfriendly trip planners can redirect you toward routes with less traffic. If you can’t reroute, pull over until the traffic clears.
7. PLAN AHEAD FOR INCLINES AND CURVES
Open road truckers will increase speed, preparing for an upcoming hill incline. The technique maintains momentum in a higher, fuel-efficient gear while climbing a hill.
AUGUST 2022
This avoids using a lower gear and a lot of fuel to crest the peak. The opposite is true for curves. When truckers come up to curves, they idle and brake gently. This technique allows the engine to transition to a lower level of fuel. As the truck rounds the curve, the engine uses the least amount of fuel.
8. KEEP YOUR SPEED IN THE SWEET SPOT

RV CAMPING MAG
Every motorhome has a “sweet spot” between 5565 miles per hour, where your coach achieves maximum fuel efficiency. Pushing your motor coach for speed burns fuel and shortens the engine’s lifespan.
Your RV’s cruise control maintains a consistent speed, saving a lot of fuel. New adaptive systems maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. Cruise
10. AVOID BAD DRIVING CONDITIONS
Your motorhome’s flat sidewalls and heavy roof make driving in heavy rain and wind tricky. You’ll spend most of the journey fighting the wind and trying to stay in your lane which can lower your mpg. Wait until the weather clears before heading out. Besides, what’s AUGUST 2022
the point of having that fantastic panoramic windshield if you can’t see anything?
FRACTIONS ADD UP
Each tip gives you a fractional fuel efficiency advantage per mile. Yet, when you adjust your traveling habits, including as many of these tips as possible, that’s where you’ll notice a difference. You’ll eventually see that extra miles per gallon with the right driving strategies.

1. WINNEBAGO REVEL
Winnebago was the first to take advantage of the Mercedez-Benz Sprinter 4x4 chassis. Winnie set a high bar with a power lift rear bed, giving the van a massive garage space. The multi-functional wet bath becomes a triple shelf closet with 3 bamboo shelves.

The 44E floor plan now has a secondrow bench instead of chairs for better comfort. As an added convenience, the Winnie designers moved the fridge to the front side of the kitchen cabinet, making it easy to grab things from the ice box without going inside. AUGUST 2022

As a late comer to the industry, Storyteller Overland made their decisions based on how customers reacted to the 4x4 camper vans that came before them. They removed the permanent wet bath, added additional sleeping space, and juiced up the solar system. The rear double Murphy bed creates a massive garage and office space. The second-row seats convert for additional sleeping. Volta’s M-Power systems can give users up to 600 watts of solar. The fog and roof lights turn the darkest night into day. The Beast MODE 4x4 has large fresh and grey tanks. The flex space behind the second row opens into a shower pan, and the overhead cabinet stores a shower head and a 360° shower curtain. enjoy better control and handling with an AWD van. 4x4 enthusiasts will find more power in the front wheels since the AWD gives the Sprinter a true 50/50 powertrain split compared to the 65/35 distribution the 4x4 had. The Sprinter will now be a 4-cylinder-only vehicle that comes with a turbo gas or turbo OM654 diesel engine. The 9G-Tronic transmission allows the engine to stay within the ideal RPM range, allowing
the least amount of fuel consumed at high speeds. With an AWD powertrain, 4-cylinder engines, turbo, and 9-gear transmission, the Sprinter gives drivers the best: • Fuel-efficiency • Control and handling • True 50/50 power balance • Incredible horsepower and torque All other specifications will stay the same. RVBLOGGER.COM
The OM654 diesel will have an optional twinturbo that brings the horsepower and torque slightly higher than the BlueTec. There will be a noticeable decrease in low-end torque, but the van will still perform well. The AWD Sprinter should be on the market in early 2023. However, RV manufacturers haven’t commented on how this will affect their off-road camper vans.

alvoline Inc. recently announced that it opened its first companyowned heavy-duty fleet service center. Valvoline has taken the same trusted service model used for passenger vehicle customers at its Valvoline Instant Oil Change service centers and adapted those processes specifically for medium and heavy-duty vehicles weighing more than 30,000 pounds. This marks another major step in Valvoline's service expansion strategy to provide quick and trusted preventive maintenance for all vehicle types: light-duty, medium-duty, heavy-duty, electric vehicles (EV), hybrid, and diesel. Heavy-duty mixed fleets include: • Class A motor coaches • Class C motorhomes • Busses • First response vehicles • Other large commercial and industrial trucks

The service center also offers the convenience of pre-scheduled dropoff or while-you-wait appointments. Valvoline does have plans to extend this RV and heavy-duty vehicle service across the country very soon.
