Y ou’ll need a truck for your towable trailer if you don't have a drivable motorhome. But how much weight can you really tow? We always get this question, and there’s no one answer based on the model. In other words, just because you have a Chevy dually doesn’t mean every Silverado 3500 HD has the same maximum towing Researchingcapacity.the question online will give you many different answers. Unfortunately, many facts and figures on the web aren’t always accurate for your truck. CALCULATING YOUR TRUCK’S TRUE TOWING CAPACITY
SEPTEMBER 2022 08 RV CAMPING MAG
To answer this question, you have to calculate it yourself. You’ll need to follow a specific formula that’s easy to work and eliminates all the guesswork.
1. HIT THE SCALES FOR THE GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT (GVW) First, find out your truck’s Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). This involves loading the family, pets, and the gear you would typically

You’re putting weight on the truck’s rear axle every time you hitch up. That added weight is called the tongue or hitch weight. The specific definition is the
2. LOCATE YOUR TRUCKS GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR)
Also known as the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR), you can find this number in your truck’s owner's manual or online. The figure shows the maximum amount your vehicle can handle when loaded with people, fuel, and gear while towing an RV.
4. CALCULATE WEIGHTTONGUE/HITCHTHE(TW)
Second, there’s a specification sticker on the door jamb of the driver’s door. One of the numbers is the GVWR. The rating is the heaviest weight you can safely load into your truck. Subtract the GVW you received from the scale from the GVWR on the door jamb You’resticker.already over the maximum GVWR if you have a negative number. have with you in the truck. Locate a certified scale in your area. You can find them at truck stops or on the Cat Scales website. The scale will provide the GVW for the truck, including the weight of everything over the front and rear axles.

5. CALCULATE THE RV’S WEIGHT Like your truck’s GVW calculation, you want to perform the calculation with your RV. Load it up, so it’s travel-ready. That includes your gear, clothing, food, and freshwater for the road. You want to do this before heading out on a trip. Don’t worry about the black or gray tanks because they’ll usually be empty before you head out. The freshwater weight will transfer to the holding tanks if you're boondocking. The goal is an accurate measurement that finds the ultraimportant Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW).
6. CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS FOR SAFETY
Now that you have all your measurements, you can determine if you’re safely towing. Once you have these weights, write them down or store them where

pressure applied to a travel trailer's rear chassis or a fifth wheel's cargo bed. You can determine the tongue/hitch weight with this simple formula:
• For a fifth wheel, 20%-25% of the RV’s GVW onto the cargo bed hitch. For example, if your travel trailer is 8,000 pounds, you’ll add around 800 pounds in tongue weight to the truck. But if the fifth wheel is 10,000 pounds, the truck’s rear axle will add an additional 2,500 pounds of hitch weight.

it’s easy to reference them. Start by subtracting the GVW of the tow vehicle and the RV’s tongue weight from the truck’s GCWR. GCWR - GVW - TW = +/If the answer is positive, then you’re towing safely. If it’s negative, your weight exceeds the maximum safe limit. Start removing gear from the RV and/or truck. GEARRV PET FORFENCERVS AIRSKIRTS PET PATIO BY RVCM STAFF W e introduced our RV Camping Magazine Readers to the Airskirts Inflatable RV Skirting System in our November 2021 issue. Founder Jim Phelan, a Connecticut resident, and Airstream RVer created this system in 2020. These inflatable PVC-membrane tubes and pillows easily inflate under the perimeter of your RV. Best of all, when you’re ready to break camp, simply deflate the Airskirt tubes with the 800-watt pump and fit them easily in the storage bag. The process takes minutes, and the storage bag keeps the tubes in one place, taking up the least amount of storage space. D uring the recent RV Boom, the fastest demographicgrowing in the RV Community were solo women. Most women who are now hitting the road are over 40, rediscovering themselves as empty-nesters, pursuing adventure, or searching for a more fulfilling life. We spoke with Robin Barrett of Creativity RV about how she found the RV lifestyle, her advice, and her work to help potential first-timers.

“If you knew you were going to die in two years, would you keep that job?” SEPTEMBER 2022 036 RV CAMPING MAG
WHY DID YOU START CREATIVITY RV, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A InYOUTUBER?thebeginning, I started the Creativity RV blog to let other creative people know they could pursue their art full-time by living in an RV. A year after that, I realized everyone could benefit from this idea. That’s how Creativity RV on YouTube was born. I had never even been in an RV! I picked one up, sight-unseen, and began traveling full-time. I never even took a test trip or rented an RV. I jumped right into the full-time RV lifestyle, and it was the best decision I ever made. I’m a writer and painter, but I “sold out to the man” and worked in Corporate America to pay the bills. For years, I tried fitting my art around my work schedule, but after a 10hour day, there wasn’t enough energy left in the tank to create anything. I was stuck dreaming of “someday.” As in, someday, I’ll have enough money to write full-time. Or, someday, when I retire,

someday, I’ll win the lottery. I just couldn’t find a way to pursue my art and make a living at the same Buttime.all of this changed when my sister, Teri, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. During her final weeks, she asked me the question that would change my life: “if you knew you were going to die in two years, would you keep that Ofjob?”course, my answer was no. Teri shrugged and told me that she always pictured me in Paris with a sketchpad anyway. That was when I knew I had to make a change.

Luckily, a co-worker dragged me to an Airstream dealer over lunch just a few months earlier. Back then, I thought RVs were only for retirees, but when I walked through an Eddie Bauer Edition, I pictured myself writing a novel at the dinette, surrounded by Aftertrees.my sister died, I remembered that Airstream and jumped online to take another look. That’s when I discovered solo female RVers who travel full-time before retirement. While I’d never heard of solo women RVers before, I knew this could work! If I kept my expenses low, I could finally ditch the job, pursue my art, and see amazing and beautiful places along the way. I lasted six more months at that corporate job. It took me another two and a half years to begin my travels. That’s when I bought my first camper and never looked back. My favorite thing about being a YouTuber is sharing this life with others who may not know that fulltiming is an option. Plus, I get to create for a living, which is what I always Thewanted.biggest bonus about YouTube is getting to meet and hear from all the wonderful people who travel, want to travel, or just like to see others doing it. Of course, things never went as planned, and I had much to learn along the way. It looks like a vacation, but there are problems and Thestressors.greatest surprise when transitioning to the RV lifestyle was learning I couldn’t count on my RV warranty as a safety net. I bought a new RV when I started my journey because I assumed it would be wise to have a dealership I could go to when things went wrong. Boy, was I wrong! I knew things would break, travelingespeciallyfull-time, so that wasn’t a surprise. What was a surprise was that dealership repairs sidelined me for weeks or months. I learned to make the repairs myself to get back on the road. I built up a toolbox. If I don’t know how to fix something, I study forums, watch videos or reach out
to friends who might know. Finally, if all that doesn’t work, I hire a mobile RV Intech.retrospect, this was a blessing. Wood or pressboard may be your instinctual choice, but that’s not your only option. RV storage bays are more susceptible to moisture, humidity, and plyboard is Compositethick. materials are just as rigid, strong, and a lot thinner. We all know the value of an additional square inch of storage space.
2. THE BASEBOARDTRAY’S
Like your interior drawers, the sliding track takes the brunt of the weight. Heavy-duty tracks can hold up to 500 pounds; You won’t necessarily need to buy the most expensive tracks if you know you don’t need them. Your storage gear may change over the years, but most RVers organize bays for specific things. For example, your tool bay may need heavy-duty tracks, but the outside patio furniture may be okay with the 350-pound tracks.
Pre-made sliding trays have an inch and a half border that keeps cargo in place. Some DIYers
increase the wall size towards the back. Many have wrapped their sliding tray with automotive carpeting protecting their gear from damage. 4. SLIDINGYOURSPECIALIZINGSTORAGETRAY Parts manufacturers offer single-side cargo trays specifically for chest-style fridge/freezers, portable RV generators, and hidden drawers that fit at the top of the cargo bay. Prevost chassis and luxury motorhomes add TVs and RV outdoor kitchen cooking devices on some sliding trays. If you’re going to add electric or plumbing to your sliding tray, do your research. Here are some points to consider: • Where is the best place to tie into system?electric/water/drainthe • How will the damage?withexpandwiring/plumbingelectricandretractthetraywithout • Can I tie into these utilities easily through external outlets or a Y-connector on the city water source? • After looking up the measurements of the products, would they fit on a sliding tray in my RV external bay?
