AND BOLTS WHEN TO USE YOUR RV FURNACE

When the RV industry started offering heat pumps for air conditioners, it helped RVers save propane on those cooler fall evenings or semiwarm spring days. These newer A/Cs with heat pumps have been around long enough that many of us have heat pumps in our RVs.

But the question is when to use the heat pump or turn on the furnace. First, we must understand how a heat pump works and its purpose.

A heat pump is merely running your air conditioner in reverse; we’re getting heat instead of cold air. It works reasonably efficiently until it reaches around 40°F or lower outside.

Once it's that cold, the ambient temperature isn't high enough outside for your A/C's heat pump to transfer anything into your RV.

Not only that, but heat pumps pull the hot air from up top and don’t properly heat the interior at the floor level. As you know, hot air rises and cold air falls.

Once it reaches 40 degrees or near freezing, it’s time to

turn on the RV furnace. You're in good shape if you have a rig with a four-season package, specifically a sealed underbelly with the heat ducting that wraps around your water tanks.

Turning on your RV’s furnace warms up the fresh, gray, and black holding tanks. Of course, you should never let your tanks freeze because you don’t want your pipes bursting.

Other RV manufacturers use electric heating pads inside or glued against the holding tanks that do the same thing. Yet virtually every RV company still routes the furnace ducting around the tanks to make the best use of the furnace.

So while you’re nice and toasty inside your rig with the A/C’s heat pump, you can’t neglect what’s going on below your feet.

BEST LAST-MINUTE GIFT IDEAS FOR ANY RVER

Tis the season for gathering together and gift giving. Of course, what do you give the RVer who lives the minimalist life or has virtually every gadget and gizmo under the sun? If you want to break your reputation as the “gift certificate” giver, here are some great ideas to really show how much you care.

campfire? The best (and safest) way of doing this is by using a fire pit

log tool to restack the burning wood.

The Handi-Hand Fire Log Gripper is a steel arm extension device that lets you safely move the firewood around without getting too close to the flames. It can also be “handy” to grab things that are in the back of your pickup truck’s cargo bed, the middle of your RV’s cargo storage bay, and other uses.

2. PICNIC AT ASCOT CANVAS TRAVEL FOLDING TABLE

Most outdoor RV folding chairs come with some type of beverage holder and mobile device storage, but not all. Yet having a chairside table is handy for lunch or a tray of fruit, veggies, or cheese and crackers.

That’s where the Picnic at Ascot Canvas Travel Folding Table becomes an essential outdoor accessory. It folds up small, making it easy to store, and has two levels of surface space to hold whatever is needed.

In the RV World, these little things that are

multi-functional have the most value. The top surface has four beverage holder pockets to keep your beverage from spilling.

This folding table comes in red, royal blue, and black.

Makes a great holiday gift too!

3. MIDLAND-ER310

EMERGENCY CRANK WEATHER RADIO & POWER SOURCE

An emergency kit is one of those essential accessories every RVer needs to have. Midland’s ER310 Emergency Crank Weather Radio & Power Source is one required device that should be inside that kit.

Once it’s hand-cranked up, the battery lasts 32 hours. It also has a solar panel to help with the charging process.

4. THERMACELL RECHARGEABLE MOSQUITO REPELLENT

When enjoying the beauty and majesty of the great outdoors, there can be that annoying problem of mosquitoes. Even after you’ve covered yourself with repellant, it can feel like they’re homing in on you.

Thermacell’s

Rechargeable Mosquito Repellent device creates a 314-square-foot barrier

around your campsite that tells them to “buzz off.” You won’t notice anything, but within the zone of protection, the 5.5-hour battery (or longer-lasting upgrade) emits a scent that only mosquitoes can detect.

All you need to do is keep the battery charged, fill the 12-hour repellent liquid, and enjoy the day outside. If you’re buying this for friends, it can be a gift that gives back to you when joining them on a camping trip.

The trip planner automatically avoids city centers and roads not made for motorhomes and travel trailers.

The built-in GPS gives excellent turn-by-turn directions and re-routes to avoid construction.

the awning is a great way to start. It also creates a perfect attachment point to hang string lights or LED light strips that change color. A few small potted evergreen trees with lights and weatherproof ornaments can add to the festive look.

Command Hooks have become an RVer’s best friend. They stick to your laminated fiberglass and corrugated aluminum sidewalls without damaging the clear coat. As long as you give them time to

adhere, Command Hooks are perfect for hanging outdoor decorations.

If your travel trailer has a roof rack, that’s a great anchor point for blowup Santas and other characters. Make sure the roof vent is clear so the real Santa can deliver!

INDOOR HOLIDAY DECORATION DECOR TIPS

As much as a real Christmas tree would be great inside your fifth wheel or travel trailer, the headache of keeping the

needles from getting in the floor vents or under the slide-out floor can create problems. Miniature artificial trees come with built-in LED lights and a variety of looks. They store well, and some have low wattage requirements.

Slide-out borders are great for stringing lights. And a quick trip to Amazon, Etsy, or other online marketplaces can help you find everything you need to complete your holiday decor.

Also, you’ll surely have

that perfect spot to display your menorah with all those windows. Ensure it’s far away from the smoke detector to avoid false alarms especially if you have professional monitoring.

MOVIE-THEMED HOLIDAY DECORATIONS STRATEGIES

What would the holidays

RVBLOGGER.COM 023 TOWABLE TRAILERS

be without commemorating your favorite RV movies?

For example, how about a blow-up lawn decoration of Cousin Eddie’s motorhome or a mannequin dressed like him holding an RV sewer hose?

If you’re headed to the Orlando or Los Angeles area, there are plenty of holiday theme Disney decorations for both the inside and outside of your travel trailer. Ensure you don’t tap into your vacation budget for your decorations; you don’t want to miss all the fun at Disneyland or Disney World.

HOLIDAY ACCESSORY DECORATION

IDEAS

Now that you’ve “decked the halls” on your homeon-wheels, there are many things you can do with the rest of your campsite and other accessories to

complete the display.

If you brought your golf cart to drive around the RV resort, use the DC circular outlet with a small inverter to add lights. You can also decorate your golf cart with garland and other festive decorations.

Movable light displays on your campsite can cap off your holiday decoration vision. Whether it’s Santa’s reindeer rising and falling as they pull his sleigh or other designs, you’ll have everyone wanting to see your campsite.

DO CAMPGROUNDS HAVE RULES FOR HOLIDAY DISPLAYS?

Campgrounds may have rules about holiday decorations. These restrictions focus on safety

and keeping your displays on your own campsite. Some of the common rules include the following:

• Keep your displays and power cords on your campsite.

• Hanging decorations on trees and other things must be illuminated.

• Use orange or yellow power cords to avoid tripping hazards.

• Fireworks may be

prohibited.

•Decorations may be prohibited from sidewalks and public areas.

• Keep display subject matter family-friendly.

•All displays must be turned off during quiet hours.

While these rules may feel restricting, there are still plenty of ways to show your holiday spirit at the most wonderful time of the year.

MEET IZZY & MJ OF ENDLESS RVING

RVBLOGGER.COM 031 MEET IZZY & MJ

n our March 2022 edition, we learned how Izzy and MJ from Endless RVing purchased an RV property in South Florida. We had a chance to learn how they became RVers and what motivated them to purchase the property.

We caught up with the Endless RVing family to continue our conversation with them. Despite their busy schedules, we had a chance to discover how

they became YouTube RV influencers, how their property survived Hurricane Ian, and what they plan for the future.

1. WHY DID YOU START ENDLESS RVING, AND WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A YOUTUBER?

Endless RVing was born in 2019. Izzy came to me one day and said, “I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube trying to learn more. I think we could really help people if we start a channel.” I did NOT want to do it since it just meant more work!

Izzy and I knew nothing about starting, running, or growing a YouTube channel. With Izzy being a law enforcement officer and my dog training business, neither of us had a background in creating videos, but we figured we’d give it a shot. So after a little persuading, I jumped on board, and Endless RVing launched. Our favorite thing about being YouTubers is our ERVer (Endless RVer) community. We

started this channel to help people. Hearing from people every day about how much our channel helps them is something that’s made it worthwhile.

We’re grateful we have a platform to raise money for good causes that we passionately support. We’ve been blessed to donate money from the channel to various organizations, including the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C., various animal rescues, and the Hearing Loss Association of America (Jason suffers from single-sided deafness in his right ear).

We also love the creativity and development of different types of videos. On our channel, we do videos on:

• RV tours

• Camping tips and tricks

• Product reviews

• Campground reviews

• Our travels

RVBLOGGER.COM 037 MEET IZZY & MJ

• RV news and more. We love to be able to share all of this with our ERVers!

2. HOW OFTEN DO YOU RV, AND WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

Right now, we are parttime RVers because of work and family life. Jason is a junior in high school and is very involved in school activities. However, being part-time hasn’t kept us from traveling.

Izzy will retire on September 1, 2025 (yes, we’re counting!). At that point, Jason will be in college, so we’ll have the freedom to come and go. At that point, we’ll be most-timers.

Once Izzy is retired, we’ll see much more of the country (and the world) since time won’t limit us.

3. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK/LIFE/RV LIFESTYLE?

It’s challenging for sure, but we make it work.

Izzy is in full-time law enforcement, and I own a large dog training business. Jason is a junior in high school, serving as the Class of 2024 Vice President, among other activities.

We combine our vacation time with long weekends, holidays, etc., to get the most out of our travel time. We usually take one much longer vacation during the summer.

We work a lot. Since YouTube is a full-time job, there’s very little

DECEMBER 2022 038 RV CAMPING MAG

downtime. But when we have downtime, we take it and fully enjoy it.

4. DO YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH BSL IN CAMPGROUNDS?

We had one issue a couple of years ago, but they let us stay after speaking with them. We research campgrounds carefully to make sure there aren’t limitations to avoid any issues.

However, Sierra and Bowser don’t come camping with us too often. Sierra is older

and has cancer, so she’s more comfortable at home. In addition, we have wonderful pet sitters who take great care of them when we travel. If dogs aren’t fully comfortable RVing, it’s best not to force them.

5. HOW IS YOUR RV PROPERTY IN FLORIDA WORKING OUT?

The RV property is working out well so far. Many renters are enjoying it for the winter until we can in 2025. There was some minor

damage to the resort during Hurricane Ian, but it was nothing serious.

Since we don’t have a casita on the property, we didn’t have much to worry about in terms of our spot, but we were concerned about the whole resort.

We recommend it because there’ll always be a place waiting for us during the winter when Izzy retires. COVID was very scary for many people who had trouble finding spots. The RV

RVBLOGGER.COM 039 MEET IZZY & MJ 039 MEET IZZY & MJ

resort property gives us peace of mind and is serving nicely as an investment property in the meantime.

6. HOW DID

LIKE WHOLESALE WARRANTIES WHEN YOUR MOTORHOME NEEDED REPAIRS?

Wholesale Warranties has been wonderful! We have had numerous repairs, and they have been very responsive in communication and payment. We would highly recommend them.

7. WHY DID YOU DECIDE NOT TO BECOME FULLTIMERS?

We had planned on fulltiming and were very excited about the idea! However, two things changed our minds about becoming full-timers, and COVID was one of them.

YOU
DECEMBER 2022 040 RV CAMPING MAG
“Once we retire in a couple of years, we’ll hit the road out west and visit all the places we yearn to go.”

Many full-timers were scrambling to find a place to go, which was very scary for our fulltime friends, which really got us thinking. But we also started to see that we would get home after trips, and it felt so good to be able to spread our wings and have a sticksand-bricks to call home.

We will definitely be most timers come 2025. We are SO excited to be able to go wherever whenever we choose. The spontaneity of it all has us very stoked!

8. WHAT STATES ARE MISSING ON YOUR

RVBLOGGER.COM 041 MEET IZZY & MJ

U.S. STICKER MAP?

We have many states still to put on our map. Most of the central and western U.S. is waiting for a sticker. Once we retire in a couple of years, we’ll hit the road out west and visit all the places we yearn to go.

We can’t wait to RV to Arizona, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and many more.

9. WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO ON YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL?

We’re planning on

attending the 2023 Florida RV SuperShow in January, where we’ll host Meet and Greets.

Also, we’re taking a long summer road trip to Nashville, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky, fully documenting our travels.

Izzy and I will visit the nation’s capital and many other Northeast camping areas, fostering new relationships in the RV community.

As always, we’ll feature new and exciting

products, RVs, campgrounds, and everything else in the RV Industry in 2023.

10. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY FOR OUR READERS TO CONNECT WITH AND LEARN FROM YOU?

You can follow us on YouTube and Facebook. We also have a large following on Instagram and post a lot of short RV tours and travels we take for our community there.

In addition, we have a free monthly newsletter and a special community of our most dedicated ERVers called the ERV Insiders on YouTube .

MOTORHOMES

Creative CLASS C STORAGE IDEAS

Class C motorhomes have big spaces used for multiple purposes. Midsize motorcoaches use the standard or U-dinette as the all-around sitting area. The overcab loft is either for secondary sleeping or some storage. The exterior bay storage can quickly become a “junk drawer” if its organization isn’t kept up.

DRIVABLE
DECEMBER 2022 046 RV CAMPING MAG

Did you know you’re losing out on a significant amount of storage opportunity? You may not realize there’s a whole area of storage space you haven’t even considered. The best part is, converting these areas to maximize your storage space is easy, affordable, and relatively simple!

THE OVERCAB

If the kids have “flown the coop” the overcab could be wasted space for you. Fortunately, there are many ways to turn it into storage space. Take inspiration from some of the B Plus RVs and add cabinetry up top.

Many RV scrapyards and even some RV

dealerships may have decommissioned RVs with overhead cabinets that may fit. Otherwise, get some plyboard, screws, glue, wood stain, and a little imagination and do it yourself.

If you feel open storage would be better for when you’re at your campsite,

RVBLOGGER.COM 047 DRIVABLE MOTORHOMES

small cubbies and a raised platform could be helpful. Of course, you could also get some

plastic electric wire conduit to run some wiring up there and finally get that 55-inch LED

Smart TV you’ve been drooling over.

THE DINETTE

You can add long and shallow drawers to the underside of your dinette table for silverware and other handy things. These drawers can open up 1 or 2 kitchen drawers for other essentials.

If you have a Class C RV under 30 feet, you may feel that the dinette is taking up too much space. Going dinetteless has a plethora of opportunities to add storage. After you add your main sitting space, there may be room to add some more cabinetry and

DECEMBER 2022 048 RV CAMPING MAG
RVBlogger.com

even an RV office space behind the driver’s seat. Turn your comfy command chair into your executive office seat if it swivels around.

THE EXTERIOR BAY

A simple storage solution for your massive exterior bay is to use plastic bins to organize everything. If you can’t find clear versions in the size you need, use a label maker to list what’s inside the bin. Of course, you want to make sure you return each item to that bin when breaking camp (especially the sewer hose).

Getting a sliding storage bay tray to save yourself (and your back) from having to crawl into the bay can be a great idea. Most of these huge rear storage bays have doors located on the side and rear for easy access.

THE REAR HITCH

Virtually every Americanmade Class C Motorhome comes with a rear receiver hitch. Class C RVs can pull 5,000-7,500 lbs. and Super C’s can go as high as 12,000 lbs. If you’re not pulling

DECEMBER 2022 050 RV CAMPING MAG

anything, why leave the receiver useless when a rear cargo carrier can hold a few hundred pounds of cargo for you?

Rear cargo carriers are great for generators, lock boxes, or even that large barbecue you’ve had your eye on for years. Strap up your bikes, small watercraft, or other big items that add up to a 200-300 lbs. payload. A sturdy lock box can hold anything you want, including an ice cooler with your best catch of the day!

4 Great RV DESTINATIONS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays are a great time to explore new places on the open road. So if you’re looking for some festive destinations, check out these four towns that know how to celebrate the season, from decorated main streets to lively holiday markets.

1. SAN ANTONIO, TX RIVER WALK HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Strolling along the River Walk, admiring the multicolored lights reflecting off the water, is a cherished holiday tradition started by the Ford Motor Company in 1981. The event has become so popular that

people come from all over to experience the magic firsthand.

Besides the fantastic lights, there are also a variety of festive events that take place along the River Walk throughout the holiday season. From live music and performances to food and drink specials, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

2. ANNAPOLIS, MD, HOLIDAY BOAT PARADE OF LIGHTS

This nautical town knows how to do the holidays right with its Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Sponsored by the Eastport Yacht Club, the annual event features boats of all sizes decorated with holiday lights sailing down the Annapolis harbor.

The parade has been a tradition since 1955 and has become one of the most popular events in town during the holidays. View the festive spectacle from different vantage points; Annapolis City Dock, Spa Creek Bridge, or Eastport Bridge.

Canadian (AlCan) Highway.

Camping along the AlCan required a camper that could take the cold, rain, and wind in the northern reaches of the Yukon Territory.

The result was a hard shell truck camper that rises and lowers with a hydraulic system. As they say, “It’s not a popup camper; it’s better than a popup camper.” You’ll find Alaskan Campers from 6.5 ft.-10 ft. The non-cabovers come in 8 ft. and 10 ft. The 10 ft. mimics the original 1950s model. You have the kitchen and cabinetry from the door, then the sofas for the dinette on the road and camp side. Yet, rest assured, the strong insulation, 40,000 BTU furnace, and other extreme cold weather features will keep you warm even in harsh Canadian conditions.

4. FOUR WHEEL CAMPER HAWK

Have you ever considered a soft shell pop-top truck camper for extremely cold weather? The first thing you’ll notice about the Four Wheel Camper Hawk is that the fabriclike material of this halfton truck camper is very different from a pop-up camper.

The soft shell uses weather-resistant material that’s well insulated. So whether you have the furnace going or the optional A/C cranked up, the temperature will stay nice and comfortable inside the camper. This RV manufacturer lets you customize your camper by choosing the outer shell’s material, color, interior fabric, and other features.

The standard slide-in model gives you the choice of a side or front dinette or a long camp side couch that rolls the backrest to a guest sleeper. You may want to choose the wider flatbed model with the rear dinette for the most interior space.

CAMPERS COLD SEASON

CAPABLE?

After WWII, truck campers started as truck caps with benches on both sides, making pickup trucks a family vehicle. Soon after, various RV innovators realized they could add a cabover loft bed and other features we know today.

The innovation continued in the

1970s by permanently attaching the truck camper to the chassis. This idea birthed the creation of the Class C motorhome.

Yet the evolution of the truck camper came out of necessity rather than leisure. As we saw in Alaskan Camper, road workers needed a mobile livable space to work on the Alcan Highway.

In the lower 48, those who worked in the field or wanted to travel further into nature preferred a camper that could go off-road before it became popular in recent years.

Whatever the reason, truck campers for extreme cold weather will continue to be a great choice for the offseason, nomads, and RV minimalists.

KEYSTONE HITCHES UP WITH CHEVY

FOR THE 2024 SILVERADO HD

GOSHEN, Ind. — Chevrolet invited Keystone RV along for the ride for the public’s first look at the impressive 2024 Silverado HD, according to a release.

Taylor also joined Sean Cratty and Shannon Pleva for a special edition of the Chevy MyWay: Truck Talks, where they explore unique features and technology of both brands, including how to use the MyChevrolet App with Keystone’s iN-Command Control System.

“Like Keystone, Chevy continues to push the envelope on trailering and towing with features like Transparent Trailer. Towing safety and confidence is a critical part of Keystone’s Camp Better technology conversation,” said Christy Spencer, Keystone RV marketing director.

THE NEW RVFRIENDLY FEATURES OF THE 2024 SILVERADO 3500HD RVBLOGGER.COM 077 NOTEWORTHY NEWS
“We’re delighted to work with the Chevy team to explore what this means for RV owners both now and as truck technology continues to evolve.”

Buyers of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD will love the 6.6L V8 gas with a 23,000 towing capacity. The dually diesel Duramax 6.6L V8 will tow an incredible 36,000 pounds. Both engines are now paired up with a 10-speed Allison transmission.

The onboard system has 8 cameras giving drivers 14 different views. RVers will find hitching up to travel trailers and fifth wheels so much easier with the cargo bed, hitch,

rear top-down, and HD surround views on the 13.4-inch dashboard display. Spotters can even watch the cameras on their smart devices.

Other trailering features include a new adaptive cruise control that considers a towed trailer or fifth wheel. The Enhanced Transparent Trailer system and Side, Blind Zone Alert lets drivers know and see all their side blind spots. A Gross Combined Weight (GCW) Alert lets drivers

know if the vehicle has exceeded the GCW Rating.

Although Keystone RV was the first to jump at the chance, the system integration technology also works with other RV manufacturers.
