RAM’S EAR
RIO VISTA HIGH SCHOOL

This year brings lots of new changes, and one of them is a new teacher named Adison Moore. She is one of the four new teachers this year. Mrs. Moore recently got married and we are extremely happy for her. She came to us from the Elk Grove school district. We are super excited to have her and can’t wait to see her around campus. You can find her in room 109, or in Ms. Gornto’s old room, for any ques tions or concerns. She is excited about her first year at Rio Vista High School, and can not wait to be a part of this community. Mrs. Moore said, “The teachers here have been so helpful and friendly.’’ She likes the small school environment more than the larger schools she has previously taught at. She has been quoted saying, “I have al ready forgotten what a big school district is like.”
Students so far have been enjoying her class as one student has said, “Mrs. Moore has been extremely nice and very
helpful, and does a great job making class fun.” Another student said that, “Mrs. Moore is very helpful when the students don’t understand the work, and that she has been doing a great job decorating the class room.” Mrs. Moore has been working with Mrs. Ann this year to help teach her class. It is great seeing teachers help one another to provide a better learning experience for our students here at Rio Vista. The students have had nothing but nice things to say as another student was quoted saying, “ She has made her class my favorite out of my four periods so far this year.” Mrs. Moore has also had nice things to say about her students as she has been quoted saying that, “I didn’t expect the students to be so kind and good in my class. They have re ally surprised me by how willing they are to learn what I have to teach them.” We are so excited to have Mrs. Moore with us for this new school year as one of our new teachers!
Bus transportation this school year has been challenging for the students that rely on taking the bus to school in this district. This year we are struggling with having no bus drivers and having no bus has been hard on the parents and students. As gas has become so expensive and with the distance, each student lives away from their schools, having to drive a sibling to one school and then drive to another school is hard enough.
Junior Ariana Bribiesca said, “We waste a lot of gas, having my dad drive my siblings and me every morning with us lacking sleep waking up at 3 a.m.” Se nior Kathan Kamdaranikone said, “I have grumpy parents and gas has been a reason why they are grumpy and we have to wake up an hour earlier to come to school.” Sleep has been an important part of coming to school ready with motivation and going without sleep doesn’t help students in their education to be successful. “There are a lot of kids struggling and it affects me since I have to wake up at 3 a.m. to find a ride
and I’ve been using bus transportation for 5 years,” stated junior Lisandra Figueroa.
Having a bus for those who live far ther would greatly help their education, taking the stress out of not knowing where to get transportation. “We need the dis trict to help pay the drivers, maybe more to have them stay and not leave and offer them better opportunities because we need them,” said Lisandra Figueroa.
Students also argue that not having transportation by law is incorrect because the government has an obligation to pro vide transportation to struggling students. The government should help as they help us with school food, and bus transporta tion should be a requirement for a better and more successful education for every one. Finding a solution for these students by looking for drivers is needed because this problem will affect students all year by making them miss days due to transporta tion. What would be a solution or idea you would give to help in this transportation struggle?
Meet Lea Wellmann, she is the new 12th grade foreign exchange student at Rio Vista High School. She took an 11 hour flight from Austria to the United States, with no stops. In Austria, she lives in a town that is, “A round the same size, with bigger cities around.” She is five minutes away from Germany and half an hour from Switzerland. In Austria she traveled by bus, train, and bike. When she first came to Rio Vista she said, “I’ve never see so many windmills.” Her favorite part about go ing to school is, “being able to choose the classes”. Her favorite class is Ceramics, “I like working with my hands and being cre ative,” she said. Lea is also on the varsity cheer team, “I like helping each other in the stunts and relying on each other,” she stated. She really enjoys when people from around the school come up and talk to her.
Lea has tried many different foods while she has been in America. Lea’s favor
ite food back in Austria is Kaiserschmarrn. That is a very popular food in Austria. In America she likes Mexican food and nor mally gets a quesadilla. She also likes the coffee shops in America. At The Human Bean she gets a java chip freeze. Back home Lea likes to go swimming in the lake and skiing. During summer the weather isn’t as hot and in the winter it is pretty cold and it snows. She misses the lake the most. She also misses wearing no shoes in the house. Lea has a younger sister that she misses very much. She also has a cat that is a normal striped, short hair cat.
Being an exchange student can be very hard. You have to leave your fami ly for a year. You have to live with a new family, with different rules. It can be scary to go to a completely different school. Let alone go to school in a different country. Lea is really brave for being an exchange student.
Rio Vista High Schools’ first event of the school year invited students back with a tropical social on August 10. The Ohana back to school social was held at the RVHS quad and was a success. There was pizza, Kona Ice, a DJ, and a Raffle. Students en joyed themselves while listening to music and chatting. Students were found tossing a football to one another, playing frisbee, dancing, eating, and generally having a good time.
A new pizza restaurant in Rio Vista, Pizza a Go Go provided food for the event. Students enjoyed the pizza they even lined up for seconds. Concerning the pizza, ju nior Ernesto Chavarria said “Yes I enjoyed the pizza I thought it was great”.
Kona Ice is a beloved treat at Rio Vista High School and once again students enjoyed shaved ice in various flavors in cluding piña colada, orange sunshine, blue raspberry, strawberry fresh, lucky lime, ti ger blood, along with many other flavors. Junior Ernesto Chavarria, a student who attended the RVHS social stated, “I went and had two snow cones and they were tasty”
DJ Jesus Reeves, Class of 2019 had a playlist with a large variety of music such as pop, hip hop, latin pop, and throw backs successfully pleasing the students and staff with a delightful array of songs. Ernesto Chavarria mentioned, “It was re ally good I thought the playlist matched the event”.
The majority of students seemed to enjoy RVHS’s first back to school Oha na social, junior Leilani Barbosa said “I think I had fun, I got to hang out with friends” and junior Leyun Liu said “I had fun hanging out with my friends”.
There was a large number of stu dents in attendance which pleased both students and staff. As a matter of fact, the staff mentioned this event had a larg er amount of attendants than many other events before this one, which actively shows the success of RVHS’s Ohana Back To School Social. Will this be the event with the highest number of students in attendance this year? Only time will tell. In the event that it is, it was a successful occasion to remember.

Welcome back Rams. Students, are you ready for a new school year?
For some this is a new chapter or getting ready to close the chapter. Let’s not for get our sophomores and juniors. They also have a role to play in this school. Everyone has a role to play in school but the more you’re involved in spirit weeks, rally games, dances or helping out in any ways the better your memories are. Hav ing a high school experience is not bad, have fun because it will be your last four years of school. So students this is a re minder to help out and loosen up more. If you believe not attending school activi ties is so cool, it’s not, it’s more lame then cool. You may ask why it’s important to attend? Let’s ask the most spirited Rams! Ms.Turk and Ms. Ingalls!
Ms.Turk tries her best to keep her students motivated and having fun but she also cares that you have to be getting an education also. Ms.Turk can be both fun and strict, just don’t get on her bad side! It’s important to her to get her point across on how the school can be better at helping you or improving. It won’t just be Ms.Turk also have Ms. Ingalls point of view on things. A good question to ask is, why do you think it’s important to get involved in games, spirit week? Ms.Turk answered with “It makes school more exciting and to get together with your friends.” Students love to be with their friends during these moments laughing. It’s nice to have amazing school memories. Our vice principal Ms.Ingalls answered this question by saying “Your best memories are built on the outside.” It’s true basically half of our memories are family but it can also be school danc es, rally games and more school events. These are all good ideas for good motivation to get started but how would students start off or how will they begin? Ms.Turk and Ms. Ingalls have good plans for advice for that. Make “students sec tions” quoted by Principal Turk and Vice Principal Ingalls but “organize a bit bet
ter.” “Have each class vote for the most cheerful and outgoing of each student’s sections so it won’t just be seniors and juniors in charge or leadership.” stated by Ms.Turk and Ms. Ingalls. It’s going to get more people involved and would love to attend school games, activities. Who plays the bigger role here? The leadership team, because the students have a better connection with their peers than we do, it gets the student more excited.” Call ing out to leadership class! Better get to work and have a great attitude because you heard Ms.Turk this class is leading our pride.
Pride can mean many things, good or bad but right now we’re talking about being proud to be a RAM. Students, teachers, or staff we have to be proud of being a RAM and show other schools who they’re going against of course in a respectful way. Let’s hear how Ms.Turk and Ms. Ingalls high school experience was different. Ms.Turk attended a high school in South Carolina that had a sim ilar population to Rio Vista High School. “The community made it easier to get ev eryone on their toes,” Ms.Turk said. She also commented that she also has been a cheerful peer. Enough of Ms.Turk let’s talk about Ms. Ingalls and her high school experience. She was always involved in athletic activities and encouraging peers. Ms. Ingalls also added on saying “I wasn’t really comforted with big crowds, but in class groups I would like to inter act with my peers.” These two are perfect role models for this school and Ms.Turk and Ms. Ingalls and the rest of the staff just want the students to have a good high school experience. Ms. Ingalls wanted to share a couple last words “Encourage our peers” and “ You don’t know how fast it goes once you become a senior.”
So Students this year, teachers, seniors or juniors aren’t just the only ones in charge here . This all depends on the students and how they interact with each other.
Do you remember being a freshman? The incoming freshmen have had a major impact on the school’s population. With more students we are seeing more person alities. With the new freshmen the popu lation has risen by 22%. “High school is good, it’s a little bigger than the middle school but still very confusing.” said Va nessa Ibarra. “I dont really enjoy seeing my brother every day but I am excited for the games.” “I also wish we had more elec tives and more classes to help with life.” said Ibarra. When asked who her favorite teacher was she responded “My favorite teacher is probably Mrs. Mahoney.” Ibarra went on to explain that she is excited and ready for high school.
“I like the cool classes we have like ag mechanics.” said Max Vielhauer. Vielhauer’s first day of school was good. Vielhauer said that he enjoyed seeing his friends that he hadn’t seen in months. “The teachers are okay, Ms. Lauchland is my fa vorite.” said Vielhauer. “Ms. Lacuhland’s class is the most interesting.” “I thought the upperclassmen would be intimidating but they aren’t.” “My advice to the fresh men next year is to be on time, and know
your stuff.” said Vielhauer. The freshmen this year appear to be excited and ready for all upcoming school events. Freshmen are bringing school spirit and are ready to par ticipate and have a good time.
Freshman Kelan Metzler-Pell says, “High school is better than middle school.” Metzler-Pell claims that he will do better than he did in middle school academically. “I like the staff.” said Metzler-Pell. “Es pecially Mr. Baldwin, Mr. Yates, and Ms. Turk. My favorite class is probably study skills because I like to be studious.” Met zler-Pell goes on to say that the worst part about high school is that he’s lonely and does not have enough food to eat. Met zler-Pell claims that he is excited for sports including football and wrestling.
“I am most excited about the high school experience.” said Adrianna Me na-Mejia. Mena-Mejia explains that she doesn’t have a favorite teacher in particular but her favorite class is with Mr. Yates. “I like his class because he is very nice and you can learn a lot of things.” said Me na-Mejia. Next year we can only hope for amazing freshmen.
What was your summer like? Was it fun in the sun? Swimming in the river? Zig zagging across the country to visit friends and family? For some Rams it was a different kind of adventure. A dip into the real life pond. Many Rams took on jobs this summer. Let’s find out more about what it’s like to work a summer job as a Rio Vista High School student.
The Rams Ear issued a survey on summer jobs to students, 18 responded and said that they had a job this summer. Out of those 18 responses, nine of them were from seniors, which means the se nior class was the most industrious class this summer.
While most rams worked close to home in Rio Vista or Isleton, one Ram went as far as Manteca for work. “The traffic is really annoying.” said soph omore Alyssa Lucot, “But it’s not that bad,” she finished.
Just how many hours are the hard working Rams laboring this summer? Most of the Rams worked between 20 and 30 hours every week. However there are a few Rams who worked 50 hours ev ery week! “On hot days it was extremely difficult, because having to do a lot of physical stuff in the heat made it very ex hausting.” said sophomore Lily Hoover.
This summer the Rams worked all kinds of different jobs. Some Rams were bagging groceries at Liras, while other Rams worked as waiters or servers at near by restaurants. Rams were also guarding the Rio Vista pool, fixing cars, and mak ing drinks at the Human Bean. One extra motivated Ram, Senior Michaela Delazzar even took on two jobs!
Each and every Rio Vista Ram has their own unique personality, which brought many qualities to their jobs that no one else did. A few Rams said it was their energy that set them apart from the crowd, while others said it was their speedy work ing skills and their young age that their em ployers relied on.
Besides gaining awesome work ex perience to better their futures, these stu dents are also gaining some width in their wallets. Most everyone got paid minimum wage which is $15 an hour. That means the Rams averaged about $270 each week. However, there were two lucky Rams who scored an average of about $324 a week!
Sounds like these Rams had a pretty successful summer! Hopefully the work experiences these Rams had this summer will help them to have a great school year and a brighter future.
Living in a small town you don’t expect to have lots of places to hangout with friends. Recently a new boba shop opened up on Main St., Selfie Studio Tea Lounge. What makes this boba shop so unique? There is actually a selfie studio inside to take cute pictures. Many of our peers have already gone and tried it out. Mrs. Surla said she went and her daughter Daisy Surla loved it. She also mentioned that, “selfies were fun! And it was super cute.” Junior Sami Lyon said “It is very good” and her favorite drink is a peach tea with pomegranate popping boba. Junior Carmen Arevalo said “I tried it and it was alright, I expected better but it was cute in side.” She orders a regular black tea. Sel fie Studio Tea Lounge also offers shakes. Instructional Aid Ana Fernandez orders a banana shake.
The Selfie Studio Lounge serves as both an essential drink destination and as a workplace for students. Junior Naj Asad started working there mid May. He said that, “it’s pretty chill,” His favorite part about working there is dealing with cus tomers, “I love interacting with custom ers.” His favorite drink is a salted caramel cookie shake.
Selfie Studio is open Wednes day-Sunday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. When senior’s off-campus lunch privileges come around on September 6 this will be a great destination to grab a quick refresh ing drink with peers. Selfie Studio Lounge also offers flavored energy drinks. The Rise & Shine Energy Tea is only $6.50.
They offer regular boba or popping boba of many different flavors. Acai Bowls are also offered, berry bowl, German choco late bowl, starburst bowl and many more. Selfie Sundays are free admission if you purchase a Fruit Green, Black Tea or Herb alife drink.
The creativity in the selfie stations is what really catches peoples attention. This is a great place to take cute pictures with friends. The Rams Ear staff encourages students to try a unique drink mentioned in the article. A huge thanks to Selfie Studio Tea Lounge for their service to our com munity.

by Abram Zaragoza, Staff WriterHave you wondered what a person’s favorite snack was? Well, if you have, you’re in luck. The results are shocking because normally you would think that a person’s snack would be a type of chips or a type of chocolate bar. Well of all the results there were some results that stood out, but are still pretty interesting because seeing some of these as a favorite snack seems pretty amazing. The results that were pretty interesting were caramel pop corn, Cornnuts, Kitkats, Arnold Palmer gummies, Dino chicken nuggets, trail mix, and ramen.
The caramel copcorn was from Ang ie Lopez. When asked why she likes cara mel popcorn she said, “I like the crunch.” That response was pretty funny but who doesn’t like the crunch of popcorn. Next up was trail mix by Sherley Guerra. During the interview she said, “I like that there’s M&Ms and I also like the pea nuts, also I like the raisins because they are chewy.” Next was ramen by Victoria Coronado. When asked why she likes ra
men she said, “ I like the warmth of soup, and the different types of flavors.” Valerie Rodriguez likes Dino chicken nuggets. When asked why she said,“Because they are so crispy on the outside and so juicy on the inside and you can pair them with any type of sauce, you can always eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can even eat them as a midnight snack.” Next up is Kit Kats by John Peterson. When asked why he said, “Cause they’re freak ing amazing.” The Corn Nuts were by Adam Avalos. When asked why he likes them he said “I like the different types of flavor they have.” Finally the Arnold Palm er gummies by Forrest Drury. According to him, “They’re tasty and they have a good texture, while being inexpensive.”
These were some favorite snacks on campus, they were really interesting and amazing snacks. Now you know what their favorite snack is, feel free to share yours with others, as you never know who might share the same favorite snack.

On August 20, it was National Pine apple on Pizza Day. However, this is quite a controversial topic. The creation of pine apple on pizza originated in Canada in 1962; it is often called Hawaiian pizza. Usually it consists of Canadian bacon and pineapple on a standard pizza. Sometimes it gets paired with bacon, barbeque sauce, and even jalapeños. Some people add pine apple onto a standard pepperoni pizza. It is an iconic debate in the 21st century, with well known chef Gordon Ramsay being against it vividly. As far as support goes, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson supported the idea in a tweet calling it “my JAM.”
As far as the data goes, a YouGov poll from 2017 shows that 53% of peo ple asked liked pineapple on pizza. What about RVHS? Well it’s a very mixed re sponse. The students voted and the results are in. According to the poll, 52.5% of students hate pineapple on their pizza. An other 27.5% say that it’s okay. They don’t hate it or love it. The remaining 20% of the poll was the minority, those saying they love pineapple on pizza.
Junior Joey Bowers is part of the ma jority that are very against the idea of pine apple on pizza. Bowers stated “Pineapple on pizza is nasty. I have only had it once, and I regret making that mistake.” Fresh man Gavin Haley agrees with Bowers and
the majority of students. Haley said he dis likes this culinary creation because, “It’s warm and disgusting, and it makes the pineapple not taste right.” On the other hand, sophomore Josie Camacho is part of the 20% of students who enjoy it. She said, “I like it because it has a nice flavor and it’s not too sweet.” Mr. Higgs, government and economics teacher and RVHS alumni, is on the anti-pineapple squad. Mr. Higgs agrees with the majority about pineapple on pizza and even said, “The only place it belongs is a garbage can.”
Whatever side of the argument you are on, many people will disagree with you on this topic. Pineapple on pizza is one of those debates that seems like it will never be solved.
AP Literature is a common class stu dents may take during their high school years. It consists of analyzing and defin ing their work for poems, novels, stories, etc. Many students join AP Literature to help improve their skills and it can help prepare them for their college classes. It’s known as a semi difficult class for the rea son being that there’s lots of writing and analyzing that goes into it. Students will learn how to evaluate fictional texts and they may also end up writing essays to fur ther explain and analyze assignments. Mrs. Smith is the AP Literature teacher at Rio Vista High School that helps her students develop these skills and make the class easier to understand.
There are many good reasons why AP Literature can be important in an ed ucational career. It’s something that can help a person feel more professional when presenting and sharing their analysis with their work space. The class gives the stu dents the opportunity to explain their point of view and dig deeper into how they feel about a text. They’ll have to look for things like the story’s setting, its structure, char acters, figurative language that’s used and text analysis. Taking the class can also give
a person more college credit as it’s also taught in college. It may make a college course much more enjoyable and easier to work in since a student has already learned how to analyze and support stories during their high school years.
The class can be split into units to make it a little easier to work with for stu dents that are just beginning. At the end of the school year the students can decide to take an AP exam and it will reflect on how colleges will look at them. The test consists of having to analyze short stories or poems and answering multiple choice questions during a three to four hour period. The exam may also be split in sections that in clude the multiple choice and the other one being a free write on going through passag es and making sure you understand what the text is wanting you to do. When an AP score is graded, it is scored with a one, be ing the lowest score, to a five, being the highest score you can get. Although five is the highest and best grade you can get, get ting a three or a four is a really good grade as well. As long as you’re paying attention in an AP Literature class the exams and the class in general will be fairly easy as most students pass with good grades.

“Stranger Things” has always been one of the most popular series on Netflix. It has set records of being one of the most streamed shows globally with 930 mil lion hours streamed. It has brought the attention of the viewers with its amaz ing characters, storyline, and suspense. With season three ending back in 2019, they captured the fans with the release of season four part one on May 27, and part two released on July 1 over the summer. Some of these viewers were freshmen Carlos Saiz and Daniela Ramirez, and sophomore Destiny Lopez. These stu dents shared their thoughts and experi ence about Stranger Things.
Destiny Lopez has watched all four seasons. She was interested in watching the show when she saw it all over the in ternet. “Everybody was talking about it and the suspense was cool,” stated Lopez. She liked the idea of saving the world and defeating the monsters of the Upside Down about the show. If she could, she would recommend this show to others. She thinks that it relates to the teenage lives of today. In her opinion, season four was worth the wait because a lot of her questions were answered. Destiny is al ready looking forward to another season.
Daniela Ramirez has just recently finished the series. She was first intrigued when she saw the trailer of season one back in 2016, she goes on saying, “I saw the trailer and was interested in Steve Harrington and I watched it with my fam ily.” Her favorite part of the show was the cast and the character development.
The only disappointment she had about “Stranger Things” was the way that sea son four ended. For Daniela, season four was not worth the two year break. She also did not like the idea of releasing the last two episodes of season four sepa rately from the rest of the episodes, but she is looking forward to the next and hopefully the final season to see how the entire story will tie together. Daniela would recommend watching this series because the plot of the story was really well made.
Carlos Saiz has watched “Strang er Things” since the very beginning. He started watching the show in 2016. He was very interested in the suspense of the show and the jump scares. The only thing he didn’t like about the show was how the characters haven’t defeated Vecna. He is waiting for the next season to come so he can finish the show. He would not recommend this show to oth ers.“ It’s really overrated. The first two seasons were good, but then it just got “too long”, Saiz explained. He is wait ing for another season because the last season left off on a cliff-hanger and he wants to find out what happens next. Based on these student’s ideas, the sum mer hit was not as big as people had pre viously thought. “Stranger Things” has continued to amaze fans with its incredi ble storyline, but for others, the show has still yet to amaze them. Will “Stranger Things” continue to be number one, or will it eventually drop to number two or three?
Is “Top Gun: Maverick” the mov ie of the year? Many people would say the new “Top Gun” movie exceeded their expectations. Some would say that it was even better than the original 1986 “Top Gun”. The sequel to the 1986 hit has been breaking records all summer. As of Aug. 17, it has earned $662.5 million in the U.S. and has earned $1.35 billion in the world-wide box office since its release on May 27. Also, “Top Gun: Maverick” recently just surpassed the 1997 hit “Ti tanic” and moved into 7th place on the all-time domestic box office. This is Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film and his first billion dollar movie.
“Top Gun: Maverick” was filmed using a lot of practical effects. Most of the flying scenes were actually filmed in real F-18 fighter jets that were borrowed from the U.S. Navy. Actors were put in these fighter jets that were rigged with six 6k Venice cameras inside of the cockpit. The actors weren’t the ones flying the jets however they had to take a special pilot training to be able to be in the cockpit.
The actors also had the challenge of be ing their own director and cameraman while in the air. They did this all while pulling around 7.5 G-force in the jets. In total they had about 813 hours of aerial footage with only two hours making it into the film.
Everyone’s favorite movie of 2022 could have been everyone’s favorite mov ie of 2019. “Top Gun: Maverick” was supposed to be released on July 12, 2019 but got delayed to June 26, 2020 to shoot some more scenes. Due to Covid-19 re strictions, the studio waited to release the movie at the perfect time. They eventual ly released the movie on May 27, 2022.
Everyone around the world is lov ing this summer hit. According to Goo gle, 96% of their users liked the movie. The critics were also impressed by the movie. “Top Gun: Maverick” got a score of 8.5/10 on IMDb and a rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s safe to say that “Top Gun: Maverick” was a huge success and will become a future classic.
The Series of Unfortunate Events is the one book series that no mat ter your age, you can always be interest ed in. I remember the first time I read it I was in fourth grade, I immediately fell in love with the book and couldn’t put it down. Even now I still find Lemony Snicket’s writing the best. From the way he describes the scenes so easily to the way he writes his characters.
I first got into the series from my older sister, she had been reading the books as well and she really wanted to show us the movie. After really enjoying the movie she let me borrow the books for a while. Now since then they made it into a series on Netflix, so if you are not into reading all that much there’s an other option. I thought the series was a great adaptation of the books actually! The story starts off with three siblings, the Baudelaire children. When delivered with the horrible news of their parents, their lives start to go upside down.
From their first foster parent,
Count Olaf trying to steal their fortune to them living in a circus. As you read on you slowly start to find out with the children that their parents were working for an organization called the V.F.D. The author’s real name is Daniel Handler. He is a writer and a musician. The name Lemony Snicket originates from Daniel Handler’s first book “The Basic Eight.”
Lemony Snicket acts as the narrator in The Series of Unfortunate Events, helping the reader out through the story, from translating the youngest siblings’ baby language to giving defini tions to things at the beginning of chap ters. Lemony Snicket, the character in the book, has his own backstory as well as being falsely accused for multiple crimes. At the beginning of each book he writes a poem to a woman named Be atrice. Though I think I’ve said too much! So if you’re into mystery and a little un fortunate events then I would say read at your own risk.
Everyone is so excited about summer. Finishing the school year, and having fun. Being able to relax, sleep in, and having no school work. When summer break comes around, trips are already planned and peo ple can’t wait to go. Juniors Leyun Liu and Sherley Guerra had a fun time while they were on their summer break.
Leyun spent most of her summer in Honolulu, Hawaii. She had got to see her dad, and they went fishing. They would also have family gatherings and they would celebrate Chinese Holidays. Leyun had lots of fun boogie boarding, walking to the Ala Moana Market, having good family bonding time, and shopping at Target, as she said “Target made a lot of money off of me.”
Leyun loved the food in Hawaii. She discovered some new restaurants that she really liked. Some of the foods that she ate were poke bowls, crab, lobster, curry, sushi, ramen, and Korean fried chicken. The worst part about leaving Hawaii was leaving her dad and her cat. She can’t wait for next summer where she would be excit
Sherley went to Fresno State summer camp. She got to experience the life of a college student. Some things she learned were boxing, coding, jazz dancing, and being more social. She and her new friends that she made went rock climbing, bowl ing, played soccer, volleyball, and more. Sherley said, “I loved watching the squir rels” when she would walk around the campus.
Sherley really liked the stuffed bell peppers that they had there on campus. She was sad when she had to leave her friends behind because Sherley said, “the whole camp felt like family.”
She gained social skills which helped her be able to interact with people. The camp organization held a goodbye party for them. Sherley will definitely be looking forward to going to another college sum mer camp again. She also would like to travel and take more trips with her family next summer. Summer is one of thoses sea sons of fun, I’m sure you had a fun sum mer.
On this year’s JV cheer team there are eight cheerleaders and 17 on the varsi ty cheer team. The cheer team had started practicing Tuesdays and Thursdays since the beginning of the summer. During prac tices both of the teams have learned side line dances, challenging stunts, and many different cheers. On the last day of cheer camp they all decided on captains for both JV and varsity. As a result of that, the cheer captain for the JV team is sophomore Brooklynn Jackson and senior Bridget De Flores for varsity captain. “Being captain this year makes me feel on edge and re sponsible for all the girls on this year’s JV team,” said Jackson. “I’m kinda nervous about being captain but I’m gonna do ev erything I can to make this the best cheer team this school has ever seen,” stated De Flores.
Teamwork and communication are huge parts of cheerleading. The bases, backspot, and front spot have to work to gether to catch their flyer. As well as com
municating on when they will go up into a stunt and coming down from one. Trust is also a major thing in cheerleading. Flyers need to have trust that their stunt group will catch them after being thrown in the air or when they go into a very high stunt. All the cheerleaders this school year are excited for stunts.
The cheerleaders have not been able to do stunts for the past two years so this is exciting for them. “My favorite stunt that we have learned is the twist in stunt,” said Faith Jelly, a sophomore cheerleader in her third year of cheer. While gathering insight on both cheer teams, a varsity cheerleader shared how they see cheerleading in their eyes. “Cheer to me is like a family, and both squads this year are already so close it’s like a second family,” said Kaity Creed, a junior in her sixth year of cheering. As you can tell, cheerleading is an exciting and social thing to do for school events. It’s an amazing way to show school spirit and to get involved in. GO RAMS!

by Isaiah Holley, Staff WriterAre you an athlete? Do you have a special ritual before every game? Some of the greatest athletes had superstitions, like Michael Jordan who wore his University of North Carolina shorts under his uniform every game; or how Christano Ronaldo al ways makes sure his right foot touches the grass first before stepping onto a field be fore a game. What about how Tiger Woods who wears red every Sunday because he believes red is his winning color?
Even some high school athletes have superstitions. Varsity basketball play er, Ashlynd Rhett wears the same socks to every basketball game. “It brings me good luck,” said Rhett. Many athletes also have special socks including Victor Reyes, Francisca Torres, and Daniel Diaz. Varsity football player, Daniel “Tuna” Antunez has a special meal before each game. Tuna said “The chocolate chip pancakes make me
play better and boost my energy.” JV bas ketball player Ivan Jelly said, “I hurt my ankle really bad in practice. I went home and looked for a brace and found one. Since then I’ve been a lot better. It gives me good luck.”
There are some professional ath letes who have similar superstitions like Lebron James who listens to Kendrick Lamar; sophomore Daniel Diaz does this as well. Freshman soccer player Francisca Torres kisses her hands and cleats before each game. She said that “I kiss my cleats and hands to remind me of what God made, and what my mom gave me.”
Athletes have amazing rituals, some that you didn’t know even matters to them. Each one of these athletes play with passion and with heart. Do you believe that superstitions affect your game?

JV and varsity football is kicking off! They’ve been working together and finding out their strategies for this season. Many of the same players from last year are coming back this year and all of them are happy and excited. According to junior Carlo Mandujano and senior Saul Torres, “It feels good to be back this year!” The boys have made great progress from last year.
Practice has been rough but they have pushed through it. Many of the boys think they will do so much better than last year. They feel that with all they have done to get ready with practice and working together, “they have a really good chance of winning and going to the play-offs” according to Daniel Diaz. Although they have had many bumps along the road in past years, they are ready to come back strong.
Some of the upperclassmen have said that they think they can be role mod els for the lowerclassmen. Damien Cas tellanos stated, “I do think that the three upperclassmen that we have are good role models.” He said that team member Anto nio Bellante “is motivational and always helps out the team.”
Many of the team players manage their time with doing their school work in class and going to practice after school. Football practices for them are fun but sometimes they can be really stressful. They stated that the coaches make it so that everyone has a good time and that every one has an opportunity to play. The coach es try to be equal with everyone and they try to always be kind and stern.
Many players have been quitting the team this year and most of the foot ball players are not really proud that this is happening. freshman Carlos Asaiz said, “There are a lot of kids that say they would do something to play football but at the last minute they said that they’re not feeling it.” Carlos wishes there were more people playing this year.
Many of the football players have said that they have amazing coaches that always push them to do better. Roman Ibarra said that, “they are all funny, kind and stern.” They’re happy the coaches believe in them and that they teach them about football. Good luck to this year’s football team!
Volleyball season is back and there are a few new changes. This year for the varsity team there is a new coach, some one we all know, Mrs. Alduenda. She took on the position of being the head coach for varsity volleyball along with also be ing our school’s counselor. Mrs. Alduenda says she’s super excited to be coaching this year. “I’m really enjoying it so far, having a lot of fun creating different relationships, and having the girls both as athletes and students.”
One of the new girls this year on the varsity team, junior Taryn Tyler says, “It teaches me sportsmanship and how to get along with others. I’m looking forward to making friends.” Although there are a lot of new girls on the varsity and JV team this year, most of them know each other from going to school together for so long.
Sophomore Lupita Zavala stated, “I enjoy being on the team because it teach es me how to talk to people I wouldn’t normally talk to.” The JV volleyball
coach is Jamie Saldana, she coached the JV team last year as well. Her twins Bella and Sophia Saldana played all four years for highschool, graduating in June 2022. Both the coaches and all the girls playing say that there were a large number of girls who tried out this season. “There are a lot of new players this year on the JV team,” sophomore Mikayla Harris mentioned.
Even though the girls tried out for the team, they didn’t have enough space for everyone, but they had space for a “prac tice squad.” The practice squad would just allow the girls who tried out for this season practice and try out again next year if they wished. All the girls on both teams have good chemistry and work really well with each other. To be a team it’s important to have good communication with your team mates. Lupita Zavala says, ”I’m looking forward to winning games and having fun this season.” As you can tell both teams are super excited for this season and ready to win!
Since the season has begun she has done an incredible job in adapting and playing varsity level. She has worked hard at practice and her skills have real ly been demonstrated at games. I’m very happy to have a player like Jordan on my team and I cannot wait to continue to see her grow as a volleyball player. - Coach Alduenda
“Marco is a really good football player, but what really stands out about Marco is that he plays the game the right way. Plays hard, tough, and smart and I never have to worry about Marco embar rassing us either on the field or off. He is a good student and is a good representa tive of the program.” - Coach Medders
