Bringing musicians to Iceland for 75 years
Rich Aucoin at Iceland Airwaves 2011 Photo by Alexander Matukhno
It’s on, y’all! Hæ krakkar. It’s been 380 days since we said goodbye at Nasa after yet another sweaty night where Rich Aucoin sailed into the night on his surfboard. Yes, things have changed – we are two weeks late and there is no Nasa. We could all lie down and cry, but changes can also be good and we will rise again and party from dusk to dawn as always. Yeah, it’s Iceland Airwaves once more! In my office with iTunes on shuffle – it hits me: Everybody seems to be inspired by Iceland. Our bankers, the volcanoes and this ocean that separates and isolates us from the rest of the world have in fact been a marvelous marketing tool. How about that?! Like Josef K. sang in 1981 – It’s kind of funny. Reykjavík, the Northern lights, the cod, the mackerel, the sheep, Vesturbæjarlaugin and zip code 101 to 111 will all welcome and embrace you – so just jump in and swim! It’s been a wonderful ride organizing and programming Iceland Airwaves 2012. And we are ever so proud with the result. Go for Harpa, punk at Mjódd, dance at Hlemmur, swim in the ocean, eat that mackerel, sheep’s head and of course the cod. Njótið! Grímur Atlason, Festival Manager P.S. Save the date for Iceland Airwaves 2013. The fifteenth edition takes place October 30 – November 3!

Bringing musicians to Iceland for 75 years
As per usual we have some super cool and ultra trendy merchandise available, silk screen printed in our very own Reykjavík. This way you can take the essence of Iceland Airwaves with you when you leave our little island. The merch is available for purchase at the Media Center, Harpa, The Reykjavík Art Museum, Iðnó and in our fancy online store (icelandairwaves.is). You might even see some street vendors!
Center Hotel Plaza Aðalstræti 4, 101 Reykjavík Opening hours Monday Oct 29 – Tuesday Oct 30 - 12:00-18:00 Wednesday Oct 31 - Friday Nov 2 - 10:00-22:00 Saturday Nov 3 - 12:00-18:00
The Media Center is an indispensable part of the festival. Through the years it has been located at various bars/restaurants in downtown Reykjavík, in walking distance from all the festival venues. At the Media Center, festival goers can pick up their festival and media passes, purchase Iceland Airwaves merch, enjoy happy hour, and hook up with likeminded festival friends. This year we’re located at Center Hotel Plaza, Aðalstræti 4, right in the city centre—very close to all the festival venues. NOTE: Please bring your midi.is email confirmation and photo ID, and we will give you your festival pass.

ARTISTS 1860

AGENT FRESCO

THE BARR BROTHERS (CA) Sat, Harpa Norðurljós, 20:50
Brothers and friends who infuse organic field recordings into folk-rock inspired by the sights of nature set against Montreal’s urban jungle.
BÁRUJÁRN
Sun, Gamli Gaukurinn, 21:00
A rag-tag band of hippie ne’er-do-wells doling out gothy surf-punk tunes from even further beyond the valley of the dolls.
BEATMAKIN TROOPA Wed, Faktorý Upstairs, 22:50
Bandmate of Jafet Melge in Stereo Hypnosis (and also his son!), this young trooper an electronic-based guitarist infused with depth and soul.
BEN FROST (AU/IS)
Fri, Iðnó, 01:00 Sat, Fríkirkjan, 20:00 (Solaris special performance)
Having recently completed a two-year mentorship with Brian Eno (famous for being bloody brilliant), Ben will no doubt be showing off some new moves in his already impressive experimental skills.
BENDAGRAM (FI)
Fri, Faktorý Upstairs, 23:20
Attempting experimental collisions in sound from Seattle to tribal Africa and routed through Finland, these pop singers have found the formula for fun.
BENEATH
Fri, Amsterdam, 00:10
A rapid firing death metal squad whose members come from such Icelandic metal greats as Sororicide, Atrum and Diabolus, and employ a drummer who could rival a rifle.
Classically trained and talent orientated, this folktronica youngster has quickly blown up as our local answer to Bon Iver. Go see what all the fuss is about.
ASONAT
Sat, Faktorý Upstairs, 20:50
A duo comprised of Ruxpin and one half of the band Plastik Joy, combining diverse electronic compositions with brilliant guest vocalists. Surprises are in store.
ATRUM

These most recent winners of the Icelandic Wacken Metal Battle play black metal as technically precise as it is intensely powerful.
BENJAMIN (FO)

He gave up the violin at age six and gave up the Faroe Islands for a tribal life. Now he plays simple and spiritual pop-rock that comes from the bottom of his heart.
BENNI HEMM HEMM Sat, Harpa Silfurberg, 21:10
After five albums and countless years of touring, this beloved bandolier has assembled his largest and loudest ensemble to date, with the intent of rocking out.
BERNDSEN
Sat, Faktorý Upstairs, 01:10
This synthpop teddy bear will flirt with you and flip you off, make you dance and maybe help you get off; you’ll definitely have a super time.
BIGGI HILMARS

One of the most sought-after pop and electronic soundtrack makers in Iceland. Being handpicked by Ridley Scott is nothing to sneeze at!
BIX
Thu, Faktorý Upstairs, 21:20
An electronica mastermind member of the local Weirdcore crew, this man-behind-the-mask made an impressive live debut at last year’s Airwaves.
BLOODGROUP
Sat, Þýski Barinn/Deutsche Bar, 22:30
An electro-pop outfit that stepped out of the ramshackle houses of east Iceland and planted themselves on the shimmering stages of Reykjavík.
BLOUSE (US)
Fri, Þýski Barinn/Deutsche Bar, 23:20
From art school to the bedroom to the warehouse studio, these Portland new wavers recall the dreamy wonder of obscure ‘80s indie.
BOOGIE TROUBLE
Fri, Harpa Kaldalón, 19:10 Sun, Þýski Barinn/Deutsche Bar, 00:00
These fairly newcomers on the dancefloor have hustled their way into our hearts with their faithful disco revival.
BORKO
Fri, Þýski Barinn/Deutsche Bar, 21:40
When he’s not touring with múm or taking his pants off with FM Belfast, this loveable songster plinks around his guitar and makes us smile.
BOY (CH/DE)
Sat, Harpa Norðurljós, 00:20
A Hamburg-based duet of upbeat, bluesy, indie rock that will set your fingers on snap and your toes on tap.
BRAIN POLICE
Sat, Gamli Gaukurinn, 00:10
If Macho Man Randy Savage was reincarnated as an Icelandic band, he would be these no-nonsense, balls-inthe-air, hard rocking slim-jims.
INSIDERS We asked a few of our favourite repeatAirwaves friends to tell us who they were excited to see at Iceland Airwaves 2K12—to name four local acts and four int’l ones that they thought worthy of their own attention, and yours! Here’s what they came up with!
By Haukur S. Magnússon
Christian Hoard
Rolling Stone Magazine On the home-grown front, I’m interested in seeing Of Monsters and Men, whose record has done well here in America; do their live shows match (or amplify) the album’s well-tended mix of grandiosity and cuteness? Reykjavík!, as I recall, have made my ears hurt in a good way at prior festivals. Then there’s Ólöf Arnalds, whom a friend of mine always raves about (I’ve always managed to miss her at previous festivals). Leaves were one of the first bands I ever interviewed for Rolling Stone, way back in 2003, and they always seemed smart and cool. But my favourite local bands at every Airwaves Fest is always some theretofore anonymous collection of passionate and/or very strange Icelanders whose slightly askew racket makes perfect sense to my fun-sizzled brain at two in the morning. In terms of international bands, I very much like the new album by New York art-noise gurus Swans; The Vaccines have a really good way with a pop hook; Shabazz Palaces are on a fairly unique hip-hop trip; and Django Django’s groove-centric electro-art-pop has made for one of my favourite 2012 albums.

BYPASS
Sat, Faktorý Downstairs, 22:00
They may be relative newcomers on the electronic scene, but this pair have quickly become the go-to guys for the techno parties in town.
CAPTAIN FUFANU
Fri, Faktorý Upstairs, 00:20
Árni is somewhat of a local authority on music, and thus compiled for us a list of ‘Airwaves winners’ through the years.
Playing their first gig in 2008 at age 16 left their audience astounded. Now they and their electronica have grown up to be quite sophisticated.
CATERPILLARMEN Thu, Iðnó, 22:30
Árni Matthíasson
Don’t let their fresh, young faces fool you – it doesn’t get proggier than these prog-pop mop-heads around here.

The Heavy Experience is a drone experience like no other. Slower than an advancing glacier and more insistent—give me moraine or give me death! Just released the brilliant album ‘Slowscope’ destined to grace year-end lists of discerning newspapers. One of my favourite bands though the years has been Strigaskór Nr. 42, pioneers of the Icelandic death metal scene twenty years ago and still relevant—relevant revenants anyone? We tend to think of Nico Muhly as: a) A genius, and b) Icelandic. The latter might not be wholly true but the first statement is true in more ways than one. It will be interesting to see and experience Nico as his short perfor-
CELESTINE
Fri, Amsterdam, 01:10
One of the hardest working hardcore bands in the country, and the former band of Ólafur Arnalds, these badass bros keep their friends the tightest.
CERCUEIL (FR)
Fri, Harpa Norðurljós, 20:50
The coldest darkwave to emerge from France since Die Form, this gloomy duo are right out of the grave and onto the dance floor.
CHEEK MOUNTAIN THIEF (UK/ IS) Thu, Iðnó, 20:50
Experimental prog folk created in the isolated bliss of Húsavík with a live show that fits in more guests than a tiny car does clowns.
CONTALGEN FUNERAL Thu, Iðnó, 20:00
Whisky-sloshing, word slurring, gravel-toned tavern blues for those with a predilection towards folk tales about the devil and Tom Waits.
CROISZTANS
Sat, Amsterdam, 01:10
If you are ever in a remote, possibly fictional country in Eastern Europe and get a chance to see a drunken hick fight, it will be something like this: a wild treat.
DANÍEL BJARNASON
Fri, Iðnó, 20:00 Sat, Fríkirkjan, 20:00 (Solaris special performance)
From conducting to composition, this classical avant-gardist’s work transcends the canon and his contemporaries alike.
DAUGHTER (UK) Sat, Fríkirkjan, 21:30
Following in the haunting footsteps of Bat For Lashes, this Londoner keeps her heart on her sleeve and pours her sadness into her mystical songs.

DJANGO DJANGO (SCO) Sat, Harpa Silfurberg, 00:00
A dance-heavy band that fuses the jangly pop styles of their countrymen Dogs Die In Hot Cars with the trippy innocence of the Beach Boys.
DOLDRUMS (CA) Thu, Iðnó, 00:20
Androgynous, hyperactive, delirious and multifaceted. Doldrums is from neither here nor there and only inhabits his favourite space—the internet.
mance at Airwaves six years ago was memorable. Bands that you never ever miss when they play Airwaves are HAM, Sigur Rós and FM Belfast so I’ll definitely be there. I’ll also try to catch Good Moon Deer, Enkídú, Halleluwah, Borko and Þórir Georg and about ten to twenty other Icelandic bands and artists. Primarily I look forward to the Icelandic bands, but there are several foreign bands that look interesting. The first album from Shabazz Palaces, ‘Black Up,’ was one of the most interesting records I hear last year, a heady mix of free-form jazz, hip-hop and experimental soundscapes. Hopefully they can capture the magic and mystery in a live set. The best way to describe Nelson Can is “Girls With Attitude,” and attitude they have in spades. I know from experience that they are an excellent live band with primitive jungle rock and surreal lyrics. One of my favourite Finnish bands was Joensuu 1685, and as Siinai evolved from Joensuu 1685 they are bound to be good. Don’t forget their excellent album with Spencer Krug / Moonface, ‘Heartbreaking Bravery.’ Surprise. ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’ by Ghostpoet was the perfect soundtrack for the slow motion collapse of the UK economy over the last year and a half, stumbling incoherent, displaced and discouraged: “Round and round we go, where’s it gonna stop? I ain’t been paid and I ain’t got a lot. It’s us against whatever babe... us against whatever.” Diiv is a band I know very little about, but I really liked their album ‘Oshin’ so I would like to see how they sound live. My prediction: Malian indie guitar orgy. The off-venue programme is also something to watch out for; sometimes it is even more fun than the official program, and it’s free!

Kamilla Ingibergsdóttir
Iceland Airwaves PR / Marketing Manager Ólöf Arnalds: With her captivating stage presence and delicate songs she just melts my ice cold heart! Plus, she’s done a duet with Björk, which gives her a gazillion awesome-points. Captain Fufanu: These young men never disappoint with their live set. Sweaty, sexy, deep and ball-busting electronic mania. Join us underground. HAM: Despite the name, HAM are no hams. Some say they’re the great gods of Icelandic rock. I tend to agree. Mr. Silla: Silla (of múm) fronts this super-group with members from amiina, Seabear, Sin Fang, Borko, kimono and god knows how many more. Silla’s voice, oh Silla’s voice, oh Silla’s voice. Half Moon Run: This band gave one of the best live shows I’ve seen this year. I shall of course be there to see if they can top themselves. I actually think they can. Moonface with Siinai: The marriage of Spencer Krug and Finnish kraut band Siinai. For my ears it’s a match made in heaven. Daughter: I’ve only seen Daughter perform in a church. I’ll continue that tradition and see this delicate show in a church in Reykjavík during Iceland Airwaves. It will be sublime. Elektro Guzzi: Techno party with only a guitar, bass and drums. This NEEDS to be seen.

Boogie Trouble: I haven’t had the opportunity to see them yet, and am thus really looking forward to catching their Airwaves show. New Icelandic disco music could well fail, but this doesn’t—these are clever kids. ‘Gin & greip’ is also a really fresh song. Sigur Rós: A Sigur Rós concert is always a majestic experience, and it will be fun to see the band in good gear after these past months of touring and playing new material. Mr. Silla: One of the most promising bands of the country. I haven’t seen them for ages, but back when I did they were an incredible surprise. I am very excited. Tilbury: A new band and one of the few Icelandic ones I’ve yet to see perform. I imagine seeing them play will be an educational experience. SWANS: I’ve been to all sorts of noise and hardcore shows, but I think Swans take the cake when it comes to loud concerts. One of the best, if not THE best band I’ve seen in concert, and without a doubt what I’m most excited for at Airwaves 2012. Daughter: I have a strong suspicion that their show will be packed to the rafters, but I will still try to witness Daughter and possibly swoon a little. The Dirty Projectors: Of course! Doldrums: According to Airwaves-Grímur, this is some sort of brilliant brilliance. I dare not go against his word, and will thus check out Doldrums.

Doug Levy Flavorpill
The Icelandic acts I’m most excited to see this year are Samaris, Sóley, Of Monsters and Men, and Sigur Rós. The first three all performed last year, as well, which was my first time at the festival. I hadn’t heard of Sóley yet at that point, so I didn’t realise how popular she was locally. I wasn’t able to get into her performance because I arrived too late and it was full, so this year will be my first time seeing her live. She’s also going to be touring in the US with Of Monsters and Men, so it will be great to catch her before too many people find out about her over here. I saw Of Monsters and Men for the first time in Iceland at Airwaves in 2011, and it’s amazing how big they’ve gotten internationally since then. I walked into NASA toward the end of their set last year on my first night in Reykjavik, and it was obvious right away that they were going to be huge. I only caught two songs then, but it was enough for me to be won over and to see how easily they would conquer the world. It will be great to see them again a year later, back where it all started.
Like a fire-breathing, redbearded dragon soaring through the sky, this bowel-shattering metal band will delight and terrify.
MONOTOWN
Fri, Harpa Norðurljós, 20:00

MORÐINGJARNIR Sat, Amsterdam, 00:10
These avuncular, hirsute fellows craft a fine blend of fastpaced punk rock and off-the-cuff Icelandic humour. Have some chuckles with your moshing!
MORNING AFTER YOUTH Thu, Gamli Gaukurinn, 20:00
Highly emotional rock with big booming vocals over melodic guitars. Newcomers on the scene that are quickly gaining a following.
I discovered Samaris last year too, and really loved what they were doing. Since they’re all so young it seemed like they would only get better over time, and I’m betting that after a year they’ll be doing even cooler things than before. I’ve been looking forward to a full album from them for a while, and I can’t wait to hear what they’ve been working on since the last time I saw them. As for Sigur Rós, I don’t think I need to explain that one. This will actually be my third time seeing them this year alone, but seeing them play on their home territory is bound to be a really special experience. As for international acts, my top picks would be Purity Ring, Exitmusic, Philco Fiction, and Django Django.
MOSS (NL)
Fri, Gamli Gaukurinn, 22:30
Cheerful, clap-along indie rock that has gained praise in their homeland that is now spreading through Europe. First they took Paris, now they’ll take Reykjavík.

Denmark’s answer to the Vivian Girls, these funky Riot Grrls are all grit and sass and no nonsense.
NICO MUHLY (US) Fri, Iðnó, 23:00
This young man possesses more talent in his right pinkie than the entire province of New Brunswick. Hence why he collaborates with the likes of Phillip Glass and Antony Hegarty.
NOISE
Thu, Amsterdam, 23:20
On the cusp of releasing their fourth full-length album, these hard grunge-rockers are making their most wellcrafted and anthemic songs to date.
NOLO
Fri, Reykjavík Art Museum, 20:00
This two-piece act defies the rest of the local lo-fi movement by soaking themselves in the ‘80s New Romantic sound and touches of Kraut influence.
I’ve seen the first two a few times each, and they’re both phenomenal live. Purity Ring were one of the big buzz acts at CMJ last year, so there were a lot of people looking forward to their album, and it didn’t disappoint. They translate it really well live too, and they use some really creative electronic instrumentation (some of which is homemade), so they’re definitely worth catching. Exitmusic, meanwhile, have a sound that is absolutely huge. Their music is so dark and evocative, and when they play live it just washes right over you, like swimming in a sonic ocean in the middle of a storm. Plus, Aleksa’s vocals are just amazing—somewhere between a croon and a wail, and completely wracked with emotion. Philco Fiction I found through NME’s list of bands to watch out for this year (I listened to all 100 of them!), so I’ve been keeping an eye on them for a while. I’ve always been a fan of moody Scandinavian pop, and these guys are really good at it. Looking forward to seeing how it translates live. And Django Django are up for the Mercury Prize this year, so clearly there are a lot of eyes on them. I really liked the Beta Band back in the day, and the music these guys are making is very much in that tradition. I expect their show will be as kooky as their record. At least, I hope it will be!

Danmarks Radio I want to go for things that I don’t know. I want to be taken by surprise. I want to be passionate and enthusiastic seeing and listening to music, artists, expression that was not aware of excited…..like when I first heard Pétur Ben at Rás 2 or Agent Fresco at Airwaves years ago and was totally overwhelmed by the energy, the musicianship and the will to communicate with us—the audience... So: This is my number one request for a GOOD AIRWAVES….and it will happen. Again... I’m absolutely sure... Besides I’m especially looking forward seeing Icelandic artists like: Mr. Silla: Great in a simple acoustic set-up with the ukulele as well as in a band setting... excellent in cooperating with a drummer like Sigtryggur Baldursson... I’m sure I’ll love the set in any format Mr. Silla can work out... Hjálmar & Jimi Tenor: What a mix. Iceland and Finland meets somewhere in space above Jamaica and New York—or even further away from solid ground. This can go anywhere—even to Siberia...I just have to be on board... Valdimar: A singer songwriter with a trombone. It sounds like a joke, but it’s certainly not. A great songwriter from the Liverpool of Iceland. I have only heard his first album. Top songs. Played quite a few on air at “Sneum’s Garage” back in Denmark... Sigur Rós: I just have to be there. IF I can get I ticket. I have not seen that band—all together—for a long time. And certainly not live. Last time we met was in Copenhagen when the band were on tour with the ‘Heima’ movie. The sound was far too loud and I was a terrible “toast-master.” So: Now I just have to be at the hall as a happy, hungry concert lover… Ewert and the Two Dragons: If you are good. If you write good songs. If you can perform in an original way you can reach far—even if you come from a small country. Even if you are working in the framework of solid “Americana.”

PASCAL PINON Wed, Iðnó, 20:50
Twins working their connection on the twee-est of all levels, this duo are the reigning sisters of sweet, the last serving of krútt on the menu. Call them just desserts.
This great group from Estonia do have things in common with Icelandic heroes Of Monsters and Men. BOY: I have only seen this duo doing a few acoustic songs on a boat in Hamburg. Now it’s my turn to see what they can do as a “real” live act. Some of the songs written by the duo are very hard to forget. Very catchy and melodic. Elektro Guzzi: It’s hard to believe…but what you hear is what they play. These guys from Austria are able to use the “standard” rock set-up in a way that makes us believe it’s digital made new electronic rock. Not with the purpose of impress us with a big “show off.” They do good music in an original way. As “simple” as that…

PHILCO FICTION (NO) Sat, Harpa Silfurberg, 22:00
Bluesy and ambient, this emo-pop band mixes Motown horns with trip hop rhythms creating distinct, fluttering tunes.
Nelson Can: You need to support your local hero(ines). A brand new Danish trio. No guitar. Just bass, drums, vocal—and a nearly suicidal belief: YES WE CAN. Fresh, funny, arrogant. You’ll just love it. Or leave after first song. But: You just have to buy the trio’s debut-EP. Five hits right from the trash can—or the biscuit tin! My Bubba & Mi: A Swedish/Icelandic group, periodically based in Copenhagen—periodically working with a pair of Dutch twins in the Netherlands—always making music rooted in Americana from the 1940s and ‘50s. Done with love, passion and a real good sense and knowledge of style—both in lyrics, instrumentation... and in clothing. It’s not an open-air museum gone live. It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s sexy, it’s feminine—and in a beautiful old fashioned way...
