The beginning, whaT happened and now It’s October 1999. Icelandair builds a concert stage in one of the plane hangars at Reykjavik airport. Five bands perform on a single night. Four Icelandic, one from the US. It’s a promotion for international media and agents. A wild success: Iceland Airwaves is born. Icelandair, the founding sponsor of Iceland Airwaves, wants to make a toast to some of the venues that have made the festival unique and the success it is today. Welcome to the 13th Iceland Airwaves festival. There are more than 250 bands and artists playing at 13 different venues over the course of 5 days. So fasten your seatbelts. We’re about to take off.
STarT planning for nexT year! New dates in 2012: October 31st – November 4th

IT’S ON! Júhú! We’re back and in better shape than ever—welcome to the 13th edition of Iceland Airwaves! I don’t know about you, but I’m rather happy with life. Have you ever been to Reykjavík or to Iceland Airwaves? If not, you’re in luck, and if you’re a returning guest or even a local: you’re still in luck! Reykjavík is one hell of a town to have fun in, and during these five days of festival madness we’re taking it to the max. We have another year under our belt and Iceland Airwaves has grown a little bigger. Ólafur Elíasson has designed a brand new venue for us by the harbor. You should go and check it out—see the shows or just hang out. I will be around somewhere, just chilling as one does. So let’s have a coffee, beer or tonic. You can meet me at Vesturbæjarlaugin, Listasafnið, Bæjarins Beztu, Kolaportið, Nasa, Fríkirkjan, Laugavegur, Sundhöllin, Blue Lagoon, Faktorý, Kaffitár, Center Hotel Plaza, Tjarnarbíó, Smekkleysa, Iðnó, 12 Tónar, Eymundsson, Hressó, Gaukur á Stöng, Kex, Glaumbar or just on the street. Enjoy Iceland Airwaves 2011! Grímur Atlason, Festival Manager P.S. Save the date for Iceland Airwaves 2012. The 14th edition takes place October 31 – November 4!
Iceland Airwaves Magazine published by Fröken ehf. / Text by The Reykjavík Grapevine / Rebecca Louder. Festival design and art direction by Svavar Pétur Eysteinsson / Sales: Fröken ehf. / Copies: 13.000. Schedule is subject to change.
airporT hangar 4 This Icelandair hangar at ReykjavĂk airport housed the first Iceland Airwaves in 1999. It was a one night show and five bands performed. The rest as they say, is history.
fr铆kirkjan A place of prayer and divine concerts. People still talk about the Sigur R贸s concert in 2000. The New York Times covered it on its front page.
Iceland Airwaves 2011 Official Merch This year Iceland Airwaves teamed up with merch veteran Sara María’s (of Naked Ape and Forynja) new label Vargur, to create some of the most kick-ass merch the festival has seen in years. Like often before the focus is on the artists, but with an other-dimensional twist. The merch is available for purchase at the Media Center, NASA, The Reykjavík Art Museum, Forynja Store on Laugavegur 12 and Smekkleysa Record Store, Laugavegur 59. You might even see some street vendors!
THE MEDIA CENTER The Media Center is an indispensable part of the festival. Through the years it has been located at various bars/restaurants in downtown Reykjavík, in walking distance from all the festival venues. At the Media Center, festival goers can pick up their festival and media passes, purchase Iceland Airwaves T-shirts and hook up with likeminded festival friends. This year we’ll be located at Center Hotel Plaza, Aðalstræti 4, right in the city centre—very close to the main festival venues. Center Hotel Plaza is equipped with wireless internet, too. NOTE: Please bring your midi.is email confirmation and photo ID, and we will give you your festival or media pass.
Address Hotel Plaza, Aðalstræti 4, 101 Reykjavik
Opening hours Monday Oct 10 – Tuesday Oct 11 12:00 - 18:00 Wednesday Oct 12 - Friday Oct 14 10:00 - 22:00 Saturday Oct 15 12:00 - 18:00
The Blue Lagoon CHILL There’s no better place in the world to recover from a hard partying Friday night than the annual Iceland Airwaves Chill at the Blue Lagoon, where music and this geothermal paradise are joined in a glorious union! The event is as always hosted by the legendary DJ Margeir. It’s happening on Saturday, October 15. Price is 6.300 ISK per person—including bus trips from/to Reykjavík and admission to the Blue Lagoon. You can purchase your ticket on icelandairwaves.com, or at your local hotel/guesthouse reception. The bus departs from BSÍ Bus Terminal (Vatnsmýrarvegur 1, 101 RVK) at 12.30 and pick-ups are at hotels and guest houses 30 minutes before departure. Return buses depart from the Blue Lagoon at 15:30, so we can guarantee that you won’t miss any official events.
The event is organised by Iceland Airwaves in association with the Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik Excursions.

The Nordic House in Reykjavík is a cultural institution opened in 1968 and operated by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Its goal is to foster and support cultural connections between Iceland and the other Nordic countries. To this end the Nordic House organizes a diverse program of cultural events and exhibitions. The house is the venue for front row activities in the Icelandic cultural calendar: Reykjavík International Film and Literary Festivals, Iceland Airwaves and The Nordic Fashion Biennale—launched by the Nordic House, now on its way to the runways of Copenhagen and New York.

Bárujárn
Thursday - 22:10 - Tjarnarbíó From their innocently heartfelt guitar-pop tunes with just a touch of electro, you’d think they were a bunch of kids. Apparently not! Thursday - 23:00 - NASA A lush mix of deep trip-hop and ambient pop is topped off with butter-smooth male vocals of unbelievable range. Goosebumps from head to toe.
Saturday - 23:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum Florence & the Machine topped Jamie XX, they impregnated the vocal-soul of Fever Ray and Austra was born. Just like a dream. Thursday - 21:40 - Amsterdam Surf punk that screams for death with the phasers set to fun and plenty of theremin solos to boot.
Adda
Thursday - 20:00 - Glaumbar Second-language lyrics aren’t the easiest thing to accomplish. Not for Adda, who writes wellcrafted unpredictable, odd poems over murky little tunes.
Agent Fresco
Wednesday - 23:20 - NASA Friday - 22:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum With their seriously powerful rock-operas and no-holds-barred stage dynamics, it’s no wonder these local boys are swimming in accolades.
Amabadama
Wednesday - 23:10 - Faktorý Main A cool vibes reggae band featuring local hip hop big-wig producer Gnúsi Yones. Kick back to their funky beats.
Andvari
Saturday - 20:00 - Harpa Kaldalón Soothing guitar melodies and a lovely lady’s voice make this low-key post-rock band one worth keeping tabs on.
Angist
Saturday - 20:50 - Amsterdam Fierce Icelandic women bring out your inner Valkyrie bloodlust as leads in this recent addition to the local metal scene. Look for their EP coming out soon!
Árstíðir
Friday -00:20 - Harpa Kaldalón A group of acoustically inclined gentlemen with solid musical clout, a folk-rock frame of reference and impressive vocal harmonies.
Beach House (US)
Thursday - 23:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum This drowsy, lo-fi boy-and-girl pair exploded in 2008, making Pitchfork cream their jeans and giving hetero-Brooklyn couples a reason to sing.
Beatmakin Troopa
Wednesday - 22:50 - Faktorý Ground floor His beat-driven, bass heavy instrumental jazzhop can be a little rough around the edges, but not all electronics need to be shiny.
Benjamin Francis Leftwich (UK)
Wednesday - 22:30 - Harpa Norðurljós Five years after The O.C. left the air, here is a songwriter who could have single-handedly soundtracked it: a real teenage dream.
BenSol
Saturday - 00:00 - Faktorý Bar This electronic music-maker follows his primal, physical instincts to find his beats. Let your heart rhythm match up to his and see if your feet follow too.
Berndsen
Saturday - 21:40 - NASA Sublime ‘80s synth-pop style and a stage persona that outshines the spotlight. All he wants is that you dance until you’re a bloody carcass.
19
nasa The heavyweight venue of Iceland Airwaves. The shows are big, the que is long, the crowd is sweaty. NASA will always leave you hungry for more.
Iceland Airwaves Magazine 2011
Biggibix
Saturday - 20:50 - Gaukur á Stöng Take equal parts horns, guitars, synthesizers and whoa-oh choruses. Shake with a tambourine. Then dance around.
Bix
Wednesday - 00:10 - Faktorý Ground floor Friday - 20:00 - Faktorý Main Hollow, horror-show keyboard sounds, minimalist EBM beats and 90s club techno noise-grit. Bix is the original scary kid of the Weirdcore crew.
Captain Fufanu
Saturday - 22:00 - Faktorý Main With the resurgence of all things dark in the musical world, these locals are joining the global GraveWave movement with a fun take on horror-electro.
CasaNova
Friday - 00:00 - Faktorý Ground floor A pair of local deep house beat slingers who don’t hold back once they hit the decks. Prepare to feel like you’re at a club in Berlin.
Björk
Caterpillarmen
Blaz Roca
Cheek Mountain Thief (UK/IS)
Bloodgroup
Cliff Clavin
Wednesday - 20:00 - Harpa Silfurberg Sunday - 20:00 - Harpa Silfurberg To introduce her would be simply absurd. See ticket info on page 12. Wednesday - 22:30 - Gaukur á Stöng Thursday - 23:20 - Gaukur á Stöng He flashes dough and ice, puffs on Cubans, sips on cognac and seems to really like… cats. Pure hip hop or piss-taker? You decide. Friday - 02:30 - NASA Their great, catchy melodies and crazy technical skills have put this band on the lips of every electro-pop lover in the country. Go see how they earn such praise.
Borko
Thursday - 20:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum He’s been on the scene for ten years and plays with a buttload of local bands. His second album is finally coming out next year, so go get a preview now.
Brynjólfur (FO)
Friday - 21:00 - Faktorý Main Saturday - 01:30 - Faktorý Bar This Faroese DJ is trucking over his big break beat tracks that got him hosting the biggest stage at this year’s Distortion festival: old school goodness.
Bypass
Wednesday - 19:40 - Faktorý Main Some things just don’t go out of style. Smooth, sexy ambient house music is a recent classic, but if it stays the way Bypass does it, it’s here to stay.
Caged Animals (US)
Thursday - 22:30 - Iðnó What’s a delivery guy to do while he recovers from getting hit by a truck? Make a dreamy, electro-psych one-man pop album, of course! 22
Friday - 02:00 - Amsterdam Queerer than a cat in a cabbage patch, crazier than a bat covered in poop, when art school kids start bands, they go ALL IN. Friday - 20:50 - NASA Light melodies, twinkly instruments and playful choruses make this guy’s music perfect for those summer nights catching glow-worms in the backyard. Friday - 21:40 - Gaukur á Stöng This hard-and-tough band gives a cheeky nod to Cheers through their name and gets all the people dancing with their energetic live shows.
Clock Opera (UK)
Friday - 00:30 - NASA Keeping the best of 2005 alive with post-punk infused disco rhythms and pretty guitars over sludgy bass. Eighty percent more beards.
Consortium Musicum (US)
Thursday - 21:50 - Harpa Norðurljós Like if the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band went on African Safari, shot their singer, ditched their instruments and replaced them with Japanese toys.
Contalgen Funeral
Friday - 20:00 - Glaumbar Whisky-perfumed country-rock to tap your toe against the bar to. Haunting and hip swinging like Murder By Death, more low-key and tragic.
Coral
Sunday - 21:00 - Gaukur á Stöng A swooning, decade-strong Reykjavík rock band and Bedroom Community collaborators, their second album ‘Leopard Songs’ finally hit shelves this past July.
Iceland Airwaves Magazine 2011
CYNIC GURU
Friday - 22:30 - Glaumbar As far as diversity is concerned, this band is setting the bar. Combining a vast array of musical styles using broad and unusual instrumentation, they deliver impressively composed and catchy songs.
Dad Rocks! (DK/IS)
Saturday - 22:30 - Harpa Kaldalón A band’s name is a bad indicator of their sound. In this case, it’s less “rock” and more “roll” with late ‘90s-ish college emo (but with better lyrics).
Dimma
Friday - 02:10 - Gaukur á Stöng Hard and heavy, no holds barred cock-rock that’s not ashamed to flex its guns. Goes well with leather and rhinestones.
DJ AnDre
Wednesday - 19:30 - Faktorý Ground floor From minimal chillout to trippy jungle trax to dubby hip hop beats, his atmospheric soundscapes will take you out of this world.
Dope D.O.D. (NL)
Thursday - 00:10 - Gaukur á Stöng A freaky Dutch rap trip with air-tight rhymes spit hard over grimy, dubstep beats. It’s pretty sick.
Dream Central Station
Thursday - 20:00 - Iðnó Following in the great tradition of C-64 buzz-fuzz sludge, this psych rock duo pick up where Serena-Maneesh last left us.
Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr (US)
Dungen (SE)
DANÍEL BJARNASON
Dustin O’Halloran (US/DE)
De Staat (NL)
EIF (DK)
Deathcrush (NO)
Einar Stray (NO)
Saturday - 21:10 - Tjarnarbíó If Animal Collective and Of Montreal teamed up to have pillow fights and make slow jams, they’d be ripping off this band. Thursday - 20:00 - Harpa Eldborg Shot to the spotlight for his conducting of Sigur Rós, this composer makes some of the most intense and terrifying modern classical today. Friday - 20:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum Raw, rude and rocking. Down and dirty bassheavy electro-punk with a big ass salt shaker. Simple enough to get drunk to, too danceable enough not to spill. Thursday - 00:10 - Amsterdam No, they are NOT a Mayhem tribute band. Not even close. More like an ‘80s goth basement art project as an excuse for a girl to moan. Fine by us!
Dikta
Wednesday - 23:20 - Harpa Norðurljós Saturday - 23:10 - Tjarnarbíó They have hit the local big-time and the kids are crazy about them. A really fun show with lots of claps and smiles.
Friday - 23:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum Going all the way with the retro ‘70s, mid-tempo, flute pop sound has made these Swedes huge at home. Being adorable helps, too. Thursday - 19:50 - Fríkirkjan Muted lo-fi grace and a masterful touch on the piano keys create quiet intensity. A modern composer worth keeping your ears on. Saturday - 00:00 - Faktorý Ground floor Bringing some much-needed womanly wiles to the dancefloor, this Danish damsel has been tearing it up all over Europe with her cool disco house. Friday - 20:00 - Harpa Kaldalón Like the Nordic reply to Sufjan Stevens, unconventionally instrumented, movement-based pop stories ripe with spiritual imagery.
El Camino
Friday - 20:00 - Gaukur á Stöng From the windy beaches of the Westman Islands comes this unusually warm surf rock band right out of a Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello picture.
Eldar
Wednesday - 20:00 - Gaukur á Stöng The singer of the band Valdimar and guitarist of Lifun got mad drunk one Sunday evening and when they woke up, they had a cosy alt-folk acoustic band à la Bon Iver. 23

reykjavík arT museum Art gallery by day. One hell of a concert hall at night. Forms the so-called holy trinity of Iceland Airwaves along with NASA and Gaukur á Stöng. It’s where many international artists came to be discovered.
Iceland Airwaves Magazine 2011
Fist Fokkers
Thursday - 23:20 - Amsterdam Piss-taking hardcore screamer duo in the running for Reykjavík’s most vulgar band name and an album named after the Mighty Ducker himself. (Emiliooooo!)
Fönksveinar Elephant Stone (CA)
Saturday - 22:10 - Tjarnarbíó With former members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The High Dials, this psych-sludge outfit will grind your gears right.
Elín Ey
Wednesday - 20:00 - Harpa Norðurljós Friday - 21:40 - Tjarnarbíó Got the blues? You’re in good company. Miss Ey delivers simple, no frills 12-bar tunes that will cure whatever ails ya.
EmmSjé Gauti
Wednesday - 23:20 - Gaukur á Stöng Saturday - 22:00 - Glaumbar He rolls out sweet rhymes mixed in with autotuned crooning, like an Icelandic Drake (without the acting career). Who needs the Biebz?
Endless Dark
Friday - 01:20 - Gaukur á Stöng Saturday - 23:00 - Glaumbar These rising scream-core stars have proved themselves to be huge crowd pleasers over their short tenure. We hear there are big things on their horizon.
Epic Rain
Wednesday - 21:30 - Faktorý Main Straight out of Lebanon, Reykjavík-raised Epic Rain turns hip-hop on its head infusing it with jazz, folk and ‘70s classic rock influence.
Esmerine (CA)
Saturday - 23:20 - Harpa Kaldalón Beckie Foon and Bruce Cawdron are Montréal music royalty (hint: Godspeed! collabs). Together they are an experimental multi-instrumental wet dream.
Fig (US)
Thursday - 21:10 - Harpa Norðurljós Fig is one half Yuka C. Honda of Cibo Matto and one half Nels Cline of Wilco, both of whom you should be jealous of and/or want to make out with.
28
Wednesday - 20:00 - Harpa Kaldalón A real, mad funk explosion as funky as funky comes. Bootsy Collins himself would approve of these funky grooves. Get the funk over there!
For a Minor Reflection
Friday - 21:00 - Reykjavík Art Museum Post-rockers and former Sigur Rós openers take a very ‘minor’ musical concept and turn out simple, soaring 10-minute symphonies.
FORGOTTEN LORES
Thursday - 22:30 - Gaukur á Stöng Five members of Reykjavík’s hip hop elite band together to make up this skillful super group of fun, bouncy beats and native-language rhymes.
Friðrik Dór
