“The spirit of creativity is such a mighty force. Regardless of what direction you take in your musical exploration, you will always make new discoveries and find new gems.”
Dear friends and patrons, A wonderful thing about music is that its treasures are literally limitless. No one can count the number of musicians who, through the centuries, felt compelled to express themselves through the art of composition. The spirit of creativity is such a mighty force. Regardless of what direction you take in your musical exploration, you will always make new discoveries and find new gems. But there is more: equally thrilling is to find your old favorites reinterpreted anew. Live music happens in the moment. It cannot be recreated, only remembered. The next time you hear the same music, it will again be a unique experience. At the Symphony, we provide you with both types of exploration. You will hear new music that, I hope, will delight you as much as it delighted me when I discovered it. At the very least, it will inform you about musical trends and remind you of the vastness of the musical universe. You will also hear many of your favorites, reimagined by musicians living and working right here, amongst you. You will witness how we make those pieces our own. Musicians, however, do not live in a vacuum. I like to think that, when on stage, we are also expressing your ideas, desires and dreams. That is what makes the live Symphony performance such a unique experience. See you at the concert!

WAGNER: Die Meistersinger Overture BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 4
“One thing I have learned about the Rogue Valley Symphony is that the bigger the challenge, the greater the result. The musicians handled such venerable war horses as Prokofiev’s Fifth, Shostakovich’s Fifth and, last season, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with aplomb. Therefore, I decided to raise the stakes yet again by presenting Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, “Romantic.” It is indeed a quintessential German Romantic symphony! I decided to pair this monumental piece with the overture by Richard Wagner — the composer whom Bruckner adored above all. The pairing of Wagner and Bruckner offers so much musical substance that I felt there was nothing that could possibly enhance this program any further. Let this be a showcase for our wonderful orchestra!”

Sponsor Music Education The Rogue Valley Symphony is committed to providing music education to the individuals, students and families of our region. As a cornerstone of our mission and long range plan, our music education programs serve more than 10,000 students, in Kindergarten through 12th grade in the communities of Southern Oregon and Northern California. Our programs are built through a collaborative effort with local school districts, to serve their needs from the classroom to our stage with the understanding that exposure to music and early music education enhances creativity, improves language and reading skills, and are an important part of the education of a whole individual. We invite you to join in our efforts! ❖ Link Up has taken off with a highly successful first year, providing weekly music lessons to all 3rd grade students in the Phoenix/Talent school district. We will expand the program in the 2014–2015 school year to include all 4th grade students too. Every student in the program will perform the repertoire they have learned in an exciting concert with the full orchestra at the end of the school year. ❖ Connecting with the Classics provides free tickets to Masterworks concerts. ❖ Chamber Players in the Classroom bring live classical music to more than 6,000 elementary school students in Southern Oregon every season. ❖ Classical Coaches sends members of the orchestra into schools to work oneon-one with middle school and high school musicians.
