When the coronavirus pandemic struck, she was forced to stay in her apartment — alone. “I was very depressed,” she said. “I have an aide who comes for only a few hours. But then someone at the senior center called.” Before she knew it, Selfhelp Community Services had provided her with a new computer and helped her set up
a Zoom service that connected her to other seniors. “Now, if someone would say I have to give it up, I would kill,” Bertolino said. Called the Virtual Senior Center (VSC), the service started about eight years ago. But its membership has nearly doubled since March after the state ordered nearly everyone to remain at home to stop the spread of the virus. “It was created with Microsoft, which was interested in programming for seniors who were isolated in their

By noon, down the block from Masbia, the soup-kitchen-turned-foodpantry, more than a dozen men and women, some with kids in tow, stood or sat alongside a length of metal NYPD barricades. Pieces of yellow tape on the sidewalk, spaced six feet apart, marked their territory as they spoke on their cell phones, waiting to get their meals for that day — or for the week ahead. Masbia, which has other locations in Brooklyn’s heavily Orthodox Borough Park and Flatbush neighborhoods, is under Jewish auspices, but the people lined up last week were a cross-section of Queens, the city’s most ethnically

hen Rachel Traurig and Josh Rothberger went on their first date, sparks didn’t fly. But 17 years and one case of Covid-19 later, the Modern Orthodox couple, who are in their 40s, got married in a backyard in Brooklyn amid masks and gloves and a coronavirus pandemic that had them scrambling to figure out logistics for an affair with few guests. “You never know what will happen in the future and nothing is guaranteed,” said Josh, a grandchild of Holocaust survivors. “It didn’t make sense to wait anymore.” Last October, on Simchat Torah, he pulled up a chair for Rachel at a synagogue, and they spoke about how she was handling the year of mourning for her father, who died last July. She frequented shuls on the Upper West Side, and in the dating world she’d seen the same people. But after some prodding from friends and rabbis, Rachel took action. “I asked him out to ping-pong and ice cream,” she said. “He was such a perfect mensch. I started to have feelings for him.” Joel, a public school teacher, had his doubts about the date, remembering how tough it had been to get her on the phone years before. But he soon saw her beauty, sensitivity and sense of humor. “As I got to know her, I fell in love.”

He proposed on March 15 at an Upper West Side Starbucks, and she accepted. Two days later, both of their workplaces were shuttered. Then, “the day after I proposed, I got coronavirus,” Joel recalled. “Thankfully, it was a very mild case, but we didn’t see each other for five weeks.” Rachel, a social worker at Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services, said she heard rumblings about Covid-19 so she got her wedding dress early. The couple, who live in Brooklyn, had to scrap an initial plan to have the wedding in mid-April. “Of course you want a big wedding and want everything to be as beautiful as possible,” she said. “But this is the world we’re in and we were able to Livestream it, so people from Israel could see. The important thing is that we are together, and I wish that everyone should be healthy and have happiness and find their bashert.” Alan Zeitlin

The two embarked on the project to help spread the memory of the Holocaust among the younger generation on a social media platform with which young people are active. They read dozens of diaries before deciding Heyman was the kind of teen that modern kids could connect to, Maya Kochavi said last year ahead of Israel’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day. Heyman was one of approximately 430,000 Hungarian Jews who were deported to Nazi concentration camps between May 15 and July 9, 1944. The story unfolded as if Heyman had owned a smartphone during World War II and was using Instagram to broadcast her life updates. They were created with real actors and have a stylized, Hollywood feel to them. The series has won other awards. The “Eva.Stories” Instagram account has 1.6 million followers. ome synagogues in Riverdale and Teaneck, N.J., are preparing to reopen as soon as next Thursday, but most other synagogues throughout the area are waiting before letting worshippers back in. The announcements came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released reopening guidelines for houses of worship and President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to “override” governors if they did not follow the new New York federal recommendations. In a statement last Friday, the multidenominational, 19-member Riverdale Jewish Community Partnership of synagogues and other organizations said it would begin preparations to reopen for “10-person or less organized services or gatherings on Thursday, June 4” — heeding New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s statement last week permitting socially distant gatherings of 10 persons or fewer for
religious services. “Some of our partners may choose to wait beyond that time, but we will not begin to reopen any sooner,” the Riverdale partnership wrote. “We strongly advise that this decision extend to private indoor and outdoor religious gatherings until guidelines and protocols have been developed.” One Reform congregation, Riverdale Temple, said it will wait until its inhouse committee gives the green light, according to its spiritual leader, Rabbi Thomas Gardner. “As long as we can have only 10 people it is very awkward to have a service,” he told The Jewish Week. “I don’t want to be put in a position of having to say, ‘You can come and you can’t.’ I’m also concerned about congregational singing [which can spread the virus further than the socially acceptable distancing of six feet]. And every insurance company is saying they will not pay if someone at our service contracts Covid-19.” “We would love to be together, but one of the things on my mind is what happens if we get together for services
and somebody gets sick and dies,” he said. “That will be on my conscience. On the other hand, I know it is very important for people to go to synagogue and feel their community is functioning. We do Zoom our Friday night and Shabbat services. It’s meaningful and great to see everyone’s faces, but something is missing by not being there in person.” Rabbi Gardner said the partnership plans to ask Cuomo to increase the number of congregants so that it would “make it more worthwhile to open.” He said he had heard that one Orthodox congregation is planning to open with a minyan of 10 men. But to ensure there is a minyan, a dozen men would be asked to come and two would remain outside just in case one or two of the men chosen for the minyan were unable to make it at the last minute. The debate comes as the number of new coronavirus hospitalizations across New York State dropped to the lowest level since the pandemic’s onset, although there were 73 deaths on Memorial Day and 200 new cases statewide. Meanwhile, Rabbi Yosef Adler of
Congregation Rinat Yisrael, an influential synagogue in Teaneck, said in an email Monday that his congregation will begin holding outdoor minyanim effective the afternoon of June 4. Based on guidelines from the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County, he said no more than 15 worshippers would be permitted for each minyan and each seat would be spaced six feet apart. No bathroom facilities will be available and those planning to hold a minyan in their own backyards should first let the synagogue know. “Every doctor we consulted stated that attendance should be limited to those not in the high-risk category. That means that if you are over 60, are immunocompromised, suffer from diabetes, obesity or have other serious medical conditions, you should not attend these minyanim,” he wrote. “Consequently, I personally will not be permitted to join any of the minyanim.” As more states began lifting restrictions and some congregants began clamoring for in-person services, most but not all Jewish leaders around the

shape. This proximity to the past will recede, as centuries resume an orderly progression. In his ethical will, the 18th-century scribe and scholar named Jonah Landsofer imagines his son will read his words in the future, and it will be “as though they still stood face to face, bone of each other’s bone, in the vividness of old association.” I admire these words, both old and vivid, and take heart in their confidence that even in a world changed forever, the essentials — what is in the bones — will carry forward. Zelda’s poem also describes this confidence, this turning, like Eleazar’s description of his hands, forward and up. She writes: “When the past looks toward heaven/ All of life is upraised. Even the distant past.” One day, this period will become the distant past, discussed in adult education classes that may again meet in person. To know and imagine this is itself a form of uplift, albeit imperfect. While we are still together in the pit, I cannot say if I have raised up the past, only that it has raised up me. Upon accepting deliveries, do not open the door before putting them on, nor receive a package without wiping it down.” For Eleazar, hygiene was both a daily necessity and a spiritual practice: the source of its benefits a mystery in the original, mystical sense of that word. “Laving the hands is one of the sublime things which stand at the height of the world,” he writes a few sentences later. “When you wash your hands, you are bound to stretch them on high.” Science has solved only some of the mystery: what he writes of ritual washing informs our new washing rituals. We stretch our hands to squirt and soap, humbled to consider their connection to life and death, aware how much lies beyond their reach. As our collective focus shifts beyond this period of pause, time will again flow more freely and reassert its convenient division into past and present, with an uncertain future beginning to take

continued from page 1 homes,” explained Stuart Kaplan, Selfhelp’s CEO. “Isolation leads to depression and mental health issues and hospitalization. Microsoft was looking for a solution to intervene before depression, and it provided the initial funding to start the program. We moved to a Zoom platform about two years ago.” What began with 10 seniors 60 and older has now grown to nearly 400 seniors, the oldest of whom is a
woman of 101. Participants sign in from many different states. To celebrate one participant’s birthday recently, guests signed in from as far away as Israel. In the course of one week, the Virtual Senior Center offers about 70 different programs and about 35 recurring classes. Much of the service has been supported by grants, with significant funding from UJA-Federation of New York. Two years ago, VSC was expanded to include more Holocaust survivors with funding from the Jewish Funders Network. New money from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany enabled further expansion in March. All the facilitators are volunteers, including Felice Cohen, 49, of Manhattan, who shares her advice as a professional organizer. “When someone is 103, the clutter follows him to the end,” she said. “People get overwhelmed. You don’t know where to begin and it creates stress in your mind. And when you get older, you have health issues and there is a lot of paperwork associated with that.” Cohen said she encourages participants to “go through their stuff…. This is an opportunity for them to talk about what they found, what it meant to them, perhaps take a picture of it, and then let it go.”
Alan Ginsberg, 64, teaches a class in American history and literature. The management consultant from the Upper West Side said he has found the class “a tremendously rewarding experience. “What I found,” he continued, “is people who are deeply engaged and highly educated and have fascinating questions and observations. We get 30 to 35 people who tune in from Massachusetts, New York, Baltimore, Chicago and Florida. Everyone is really talkative and incisive and has wonderful personal experiences to share.”

She has been taking virtual classes for about three years after Selfhelp gave her a computer.
An exception is Henry Musat, 96, also of Rego Park, who said that when he first began attending the Selfhelp senior center at the Forest Hills Jewish Center about 10 years ago he remembers thinking, “Oh my God, everybody is so old. “At that time I was still driving,” he recalled. “I started with the virtual programs about two years ago when social workers encouraged me to join. They put the computer in my house and it has been very useful. I use it two or three times a week. I was never big at joining, but it helps me not to be alone — and maybe I get an added
“I take at least two classes a week,” she said. “I take a book reading class and another in singing Hebrew songs.” When Elizaveta Vigonskaya of Brooklyn retired as a nurse 10 years ago at the age of 71, she said she worried about her future. “I was so scared,” she confessed. “I had so much energy, what would I do?” A Holocaust survivor from the Ukraine, Vigonskaya said that Selfhelp brought her “the best happiness in my life. … At my age, I’m lucky. I realize the whole world is open [to me]. The person who runs this program should get a Nobel Prize.” That sentiment was echoed by John Gaidis, 81, of Maspeth, a retired New York City firefighter. “I think it’s great,” he said. “We tell each other silly jokes and try to keep each other occupied. And we get good advice from each other and share advice with others. It’s like a club. We try not to discuss politics. … It really is wonderful. We keep an eye on each other.” Josephine Doria, 91, who lives by herself in Little Neck, Queens, summed it up, saying, “It’s so nice to have company. The screen holds the pictures of 25 people and they keep changing the faces [of participants] so we get to see everybody.” ■

There is a $60 per month charge to access all the programs, but most of the participants’ fees are paid by grants. “One of the things we do with the VSC is dispel the myth that older adults don’t want to use technology,” Kaplan observed. “We shouldn’t let ageism creep in and say that older adults are not going to use technology. We demonstrated that early on in this program.” Interviews with five participants

Update on Maimonides Medical Center Visiting Policies Dear Friends, Greetings. Over the last two months, the need to physically isolate ourselves from one another has been one of many significant burdens inflicted by this pandemic on our community. In the context of healthcare, all hospitals in New York State have been operating under Department of Health guidelines that prohibit visiting of patients, with few exceptions. These measures have been necessary to protect patients and the public, but the inability to visit loved ones who are hospitalized has been a source of tremendous anguish for so many. The loss of family and friends at the bedside has removed something important to the process of healing. As we now work to adapt to the ongoing presence of COVID-19 in our society, I am pleased to let you know that Maimonides is among the first group of hospitals in the State selected by Governor Cuomo to participate in a pilot program through which an expanded visitation protocol will be evaluated. From May 26 through June 8, general visitation of patients in the Maimonides emergency room or inpatient areas will be allowed as follows, irrespective of whether the patient is being treated for COVID-19: s /NE VISITOR WILL BE PERMITTED AT BEDSIDE WITH UP TO two visitors per day per patient s 6ISITORS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH AND MUST WEAR appropriate PPE s !LL VISITORS MUST CONSENT TO SYMPTOM AND temperature checks s 6ISITS ARE LIMITED TO FOUR HOURS PER DAY PER PATIENT s &OR PATIENTS ON INPATIENT UNITS VISITATION HOURS ARE limited to the following times: O 3UNDAY &RIDAY PM PM AND PM PM O 3ATURDAY PM PM AND PM PM These visiting policies for general patients are subject to change during the pilot period.
Please note that special visiting policies for the following units and situations remain in effect: s 4HE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT .)#5 s ,ABOR DELIVERY MOTHER BABY UNITS s 0EDIATRIC UNITS s )MMINENT END OF LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES s 0ATIENTS FOR WHOM A SUPPORT PERSON IS MEDICALLY necessary. For the most of up to date version of all visiting policies, please visit www.mmcCovid.com. In concert with the new visiting policy, you will also notice a new electronic visitor management system at OUR MAIN CAMPUS 5PON ARRIVAL VISITORS WILL BE ASKED TO present photo identification and will be issued a printed pass with their photo on it that permits access for the duration of the visit. An alternate process for issuing visitor passes will be available for visitors requiring special accommodations. We hope that these measures to facilitate visitation in a safe manner will be among many such steps in the coming weeks that help our patients, families, and healthcare workers cope more effectively with COVID-19. Thank you for your support and partnership as we work together to heal and move our community forward during this challenging period.
Sincerely,

diverse borough. “Jews, secular, Christians, Spanish, Russian, Indians” — all have taken their place in the line during a typical week since the start of the coronavirus crisis, says Ariel Mulladzhanov, the site’s manager. The typical recipient is unemployed, probably for only a few months, and never had to seek a handout before, Mulladzhanov says. “A lot of elderly, a lot of immigrants,” she says, many of whom hail from Uzbekistan and other republics of the former Soviet Union. The infirm, those diagnosed with Covid-19 and those quarantined because of exposure to the disease receive newly instituted home deliveries from Masbia. “The Torah says you serve everyone food,” irrespective of race or religion, says Alexander Rapaport, the 42-year-old co-founder of Masbia. But that biblical ethic, combined with the surge in need in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, is testing Rapaport more severely now than at any time during his 15-year run operating the only five-day-a-week kosher soup kitchen in the city. Known as a holy hustler for his tireless fundraising efforts and dedication to the needy, Rapaport has had to pivot overnight from his original, sit-down format to a distribution venue. The three Masbia locations now feed about 40,000 people a week, a four-fold increase since the onset of the coronavirus. The pre-bagged take-away hot meals and groceries often feed a family for a week; there are frozen meals for people who cannot prepare their own meals, and always fruits and vegetables. Many of the people in line bring carts to lug the food home. In advance of Shavuot this week, Masbia distributed a variety of dairy staples — milk, yogurt, cottage cheese — donated by upstate farmers through the state’s “Nourish New York” initiative. Rapaport says the budget of the Rego Park location alone has ballooned to $100,000 a week, up from $35,000 a week before the Covid-19 outbreak. (He projects his 2020 budget to be $25 million, five times what it was a year ago; 40 percent of his funding comes from the government.) Since March, calls for help come in all the time. “I’m only sleeping on Shabbos,” Rapaport says. As food banks around the city close, he admits to being unsure about Masbia’s future. By necessity, he is stepping up his fundraising efforts through online appeals
Alexander Rapaport, right, in the Masbia soup kitchen. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit and demand has risen, “I’m only sleeping on Shabbos.” COU RTESY OF MASB IA and phone calls to sympathetic supporters, many of whom, he says, have upped their contributions. He won’t divulge specifics but he indicated that fundraising has picked up considerably since Passover, when he and his supporters met, amid a mood of pessimism, to consider Masbia’s prospects going forward. And Rapaport is innovating. Last week, Masbia instituted an app, Plentiful, patterned after one used by the Helmsley Charitable Trust. It coordinates appointment times for recipients to show up and regulates the lines snaking around the block. The appointment system, Rapaport says, “gives people their dignity.” In Rego Park, because of social distancing rules, recipients don’t step inside the building. “We’re doing everything outside,” Rapaport says. “We have the benefit of God’s purifier [fresh air].”

An important role
t the head of the line, located between the rear wall of a Key Food supermarket and the front entrance of a Citibank branch, is Miriam, a Jewish native of Iran in her 40s who lost her job in a dentist’s office as a result of the pandemic. (She declines to share her last name.) Her health is fine, she says, but she was turned down for unemployment benefits. Her husband is disabled and she has limited funds. She came for the first time a few days earlier to receive a week’s supply of food. “It was very helpful.” Today, Miriam wants to enter the online Masbia system, and she starts speaking with Vicky DelaPena, a Masbia volunteer who enters the information on a tablet. Behind them, on the Masbia front window and piled on a small table, are printed and handwritten notices in English, Cyrillic, Spanish, Mandarin and Korean offering information about distribution hours, about the site’s health policy (“No mask, no entry”)
and about entering the computerized Masbia system. The office of Rep. Grace Meng, the House Democrat who represents the area, helped with some of the translations. The staff of the Rego Park site reflects the multi-ethnic character of its recipients. Rapaport is driven around to pick up food by a Muslim man. Volunteer Dela-Pena is Catholic. “It doesn’t matter which religion you come from,” she says. “We should all be on our knees in prayer” to deal with the pandemic. She lost her job as a staff manager with the American Cancer Society three months ago, and offered her time to Masbia. “It’s what I’m supposed to do.” As Miriam and Dela-Pena speak, a pair of chasidic men wheel palettes of frozen meals and barrels of fruit from a nearby van. In line behind them, Will, a retiree from Ukraine, says he has been coming to Masbia for five years. “I don’t cook,” he says. He shows up a few hours early every week, he says. He schmoozes with a fellow retiree next to him, from Uzbekistan, who is reluctant to speak with a reporter. Next in line is Rajkumary Naipaul, a Hindu from British Guiana, who has received her meals from Masbia for two months. In her 40s, she has a heart condition and can’t work. She saw a notice about Masbia in a store. Does she feel out of place turning to a Jewish organization for assistance? No. “I used to work with Jewish people. I like them.” In recent weeks Masbia has increased its hours of operation, increased security and hired about 10 temporary workers to replace permanent workers who left the operation early in the pandemic. “They were scared,” Rapaport says. As soup kitchens and food banks have closed down, “Groups like Masbia play an incredibly important role,” says David Greenfield, executive director of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, which helped found
Masbia. “Few have the expertise” or the expansive outlook “that Masbia has,” he said. “Their programs are open to everyone.” Rapaport’s instinct to help those in need was formed early on. He tells about hearing stories when he was a child from his grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who interned in “every horrible camp that existed.” Yet she somehow managed to feed people in the camps. “She stole beets from the SS” and begged potato scraps from local farmers, all at the risk of her life. “I get no schar [heavenly reward] for what I do,” he says. “For me this is as natural as it can be. This is in my DNA.” With the sit-down operation temporarily on hold, Rapaport concentrates on coordinating the operation of the three Masbia sites, supervising their staff of 10 paid employees and three dozen volunteers, ordering food, cajoling suppliers to donate what they can, raising money and inspecting the supplies to ensure that they are fresh and of high quality. “I pay a lot of money,” he says, “because I want good meals, a good hechsher,” or level of kosher supervision. In the “3,000-plus”-square-foot basement of the building, Rapaport, wearing a white KN95 mask and clear latex gloves, shows a visitor stacks of rice bags, canned tuna, canned tomatoes, Cheerios…. The stacks extend as far as the eye can see. “This is considered a ‘depletion,’” he says. More supplies are due soon, to fill the few available spaces. Inside a pair of “mega-mega” freezers that Rapaport had installed, he points to stacks of kosher meals that were intended for cancelled airline flights. The “ready-to-eat” goods come from Borenstein Caterers, which donated some and sold others “at a very good price,” and from Lou G. Siegel Catering. The tour of the building over, Rapaport climbs the staircase he had installed to facilitate deliveries. It’s 7:30 p.m., a half-hour past closing time. A few weeks earlier, there would have still been people in line, he says. The computerized system has reduced congestion. “This is a good day,” Rapaport says. People are probably still in line in Borough Park and Flatbush, he adds, a situation that, as the coronavirus pandemic drags on, will probably play out at the Rego Park location too in the coming days. “The need is there.” ■ steve@jewishweek.org

Judge Takes NAACP’s Side in East Ramapo Schools Case Jewish Week Staff A federal judge sided with black and Latino voters in East Ramapo Tuesday, saying the method that allowed Orthodox Jewish members to dominate the area’s school board violated the New York Voting Rights Act. U.S. District Court Judge Cathy Seibel said the East Ramapo Central School District will be banned from using the at-large voting method to elect school board
members in elections scheduled for June 9, Lohud. com reported. Instead, the district has 30 days to come up with a ward-based plan for electing board members. The goal “is to ensure that every voter has equal access to the electoral process,” the judge wrote. “For too long, black and Latino voters in the District have been frustrated in that most fundamental and precious endeavor. They, like their white neighbors, are entitled to have their voices heard.” The ruling was a victory for the Spring Valley chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, which sued the district in 2017, and a setback for the nine-person school board whose members are mostly Orthodox Jewish men. Lawyers for the district, who did not immediately comment on the ruling, argued that race had nothing to do with the success of Orthodox candidates. They attributed the results to turnout by voters who shared their vision for low property taxes and generous public services for private school students. Nearly all of the Jewish students in the Rockland County towns served by the district attend yeshivas; black and Hispanic families, whose children attend public schools, said budget cutbacks had crippled the school system. “This is not to say that the white bloc voters harbor conscious racial animus,” Judge Seibel wrote of her ruling. “But if we assume that the white ‘private school community’ votes as it does to reduce taxes, it would deny reality to pretend that its members were unaware that the students to be negatively affected by their votes are overwhelmingly children of color.” ■

That could cause trouble for him, even if a final verdict still has not been reached. That’s because other government ministers and lawmakers do have to resign or take a leave of absence while under indictment. But a recent lawsuit suggests that things won’t be cut and dry then, either. In response to a lawsuit making the case that Netanyahu should not be allowed to form a government while under indictment, the court ruled that it did not have the legal grounds to interfere with the workings of the Knesset, or the executive branch. Once Netanyahu steps down as prime minister, the court will likely be asked to force him to resign. Doing so would require undermining the precedent it just set. 4. Netanyahu is not the only person on trial here. A host of prominent Israelis will parade through the courtroom. Also on trial are Arnon Mozes, publisher of the daily Hebrew-language Yediot Acharonot newspaper, and Shaul and Iris Elovitch, the controlling shareholders of Israel’s Bezeq telecommunications company and also owners of the Walla news website. They are charged with providing Netanyahu with favorable coverage in exchange for political favors. Also, three former government workers whom Netanyahu hired are expected to testify against him. All have been given immunity from prosecution. ■

THE CORONAVIRUS WAS NOVEL, BUT WE’RE READY FOR WHATEVER COMES NEXT.
That’s because we have been bringing the best and latest medical care, nursing and therapy to bring life to geriatric care for over a century, and were even caring for New York’s elders during all three waves of the 1918-19 Spanish Flu. We’ve learned a lot since that time, and that’s why Parker’s COVID-19 response was quick: • Monitored the coronavirus’ development from the beginning of 2020, and initiated our defense plan. • Used our own resources rather than wait for any additional assistance to provide adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for all staff. • Closed our facility to non-essential visitors before being required to do so. • As a leading academic campus for healthcare professionals, we mandated special training covering best practices, patient care, infection control protocols and personal safety. • Early and ongoing testing of both symptomatic and asymptomatic residents, patients and staff to improve early detection and isolation. One thing Parker knows that is still true today is that our best science and medical practices are never enough without the genuine loving and compassionate bonds Parker caregivers form with our residents and patients.

In Midtown Manhattan, the kosher Barnea Bistro, which recently doubled in size by expanding to space next door, is closed but, as of last week, has a take-out menu. According to owner and founder Josh Kessler, you can order a 21st-century “TV dinner” made up of a main course and two side dishes. The restaurant offers delivery to the five boroughs, Nassau County, northern New Jersey and Westchester. Jay and Lloyd’s Kosher Deli on Avenue U has recently reopened for takeout. Food for the frontlines
wo of Admony’s Taim locations are surviving in large part thanks to support from the Jewish Food Society (JFS) and The Paul E. Singer Foundation in partnership with Feed the Frontlines NYC. The Feed the Frontlines program buys food from area restaurants and delivers it to healthcare workers, helping keep the restaurants afloat. Other restaurants involved in this effort include Russ & Daughters, Katz’s Delicatessen, the modern Middle Eastern Lamalo, and Modern Bread & Bagel and its sister restaurant, Arba, which serves modern Israeli cuisine. According to Admony, Taim provides between 200-300 meals a day — dishes like falafel, sabich (an Iraqi sandwich stuffed with eggplant, boiled egg, hummus and Israeli salad), and cauliflower shwarma. In Rego Park, Queens, the Israelov family, owners of the Bukharian glatt kosher restaurant Ganey Orly, began donating food to healthcare heroes early on. “Originally, we didn’t expect anyone to pay for the food we donated,” said Eytan Israelov, son of the owner and founder. “We did it out of the goodness of our hearts. I’m a nursing student. We have nurses, doctors and pharmacists in the family. The first 250 meals were donated by us. We then started a fundraiser, and in a bit more than a month we have donated more than 1,200 meals to 35 hospitals in the New York area.” Healthcare workers received dishes like plov, a Bukharian dish made with rice, meat and carrots, or dumplings stuffed with meat and accompanied by salads. And they didn’t have to be Jewish — or keep kosher. For regular customers, dishes are available for pick-up or delivery. Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers, with five remaining locations in Florida, Queens and Long Island, is also sending food to front-line workers with help from the United Way and private donations. Ben’s recently noticed that night shift workers were being ignored, so it has focused on sending meal boxes filled with sandwiches, cole slaw, pickles, and chicken noodle soup to the night staff at local hospitals. For regular customers, the five delis are offering delivery and curbside pick-up of their full menu, but business has dropped more than 50 percent since their dining rooms are closed. “We are, in large part, keeping our restaurants open for our customers and our staff,” said owner Ronnie Dragoon. Other restaurants are getting help from smaller nonprofits. Talia’s Steakhouse on the Upper West Side is open for take-out. The owner, Effie Nagar, is working with Fountain of Kindness and Yiddishe Mama to provide meals to hospital workers. Presidents Conference Should Bar Abusers
Your editorial congratulating Dianne Lob on her selection as chair-elect of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (April 22) argued that as just “the third woman to serve as chair” of the conference, “she’ll bring fresh perspective to a field where a small minority of women hold top leadership positions.” We hope that Ms. Lob’s fresh perspective will include a recognition of the urgency of addressing the crisis of sexual harassment and abuse in Jewish professional life. In recent years, a number of important figures in our community have been revealed as sexual abusers. Unfortunately, not all Jewish organizations and institutions have taken meaningful measures in response to these revelations. We urge the Conference of Presidents to lead the way by adopting a policy of barring from its activities any Jewish organizational representative who has committed sexual harassment or assault. Such a policy would set an example of leadership on this critical issue for zero tolerance of sexual harassment or abuse in Jewish communal life. It would also ensure that the Jewish community can have full confidence in the integrity of those who represent our interests. Museum of the Bible Deserves Scrutiny
The letter writer who enjoyed his visit to the Museum of the Bible did not understand what this museum is doing (“Museum of the Bible Unfairly Targeted,” May 15). A Torah scroll retains its sanctity, even after many years when it can no longer be read in a synagogue. We bury a worn scroll. To buy and sell these scrolls is a desecration. To inflate the price of sacred scrolls for tax purposes is unconscionable. Your reporter, Hella Winston, and The Jewish Week are to be commended for the exposé “How Much Is an Unkosher Torah Worth?” in your April 24 edition. You have alerted the community to protect our Torah scrolls and bury them with reverence. You were ahead of The New York Times, which reported May 20 that the company “has repeatedly had problems with the provenance of its rare acquisitions.” Referring to the return
of 11,500 artifacts to Iraq and Egypt, the chairman of the museum’s board “acknowledged he had ‘trusted the wrong people, and unwittingly dealt with unscrupulous dealers’.” Rivkah Blau Manhattan
Trump No Friend to Jews, Israel
I am astounded that you have a letter writer who claims that Trump is “arguably the most pro-Jewish and pro-Israel president the U.S. has ever had” (“Trump’s Opponents Were AntiDemocratic,” May 22). This is a man who posted antiSemitic images and made hostile references almost exclusively to individual Jews during his election campaign; hired Sebastian Gorka, who had ties to a Nazi-allied far-right group in Hungary; failed properly to acknowledge Jewish suffering in the Holocaust; claimed that there were “fine people” marching among the Nazi thugs in Charlottesville as they menaced a synagogue and its congregants, and constantly insults Jewish audiences as being preoccupied with monetary gain. He has violated basic Jewish values by oppressing the stranger and the poor. As for Israel, he has endangered its legitimate interests by imperiling the two-state solution, and unconstitutionally supplying massive arms to his Saudi friends, which can easily be turned against Israel in the future. He has seemingly appeased Israel to placate his evangelical Christian friends, not the Jewish community. He is only a “friend of Israel” if that means advancing the particular agenda of the Netanyahu government. He is not our friend. Stephen E. Appell Brooklyn

Demography and the perilous politics of race, identity and inclusion.
I
don’t know if you followed the debate last week about and among Jews of color, but — hoo boy. What started out as a dry bit of academic demography turned into an explosive debate over Jewish identity and exclusion. Here’s the fast version: A 2019 research project led by The Jews of Color Field Building Initiative determined that approximately 12-15 percent of American Jews could be defined as “Jews of color.” Last week the website eJewish Philanthropy published a response, titled “How Many Jews of Color Are There?” Two well-known Jewish demographers, Ira Sheskin and Arnold Dashefsky, put the number at closer to 6 percent, saying the 2019 study overrepresented major metropolitan areas like New York and San Francisco. Activists, both Jews of color and their allies, were furious. An online protest letter said the article “illustrates how racism drives Jews of Color away from Jewish communal life — by judging or devaluing their place in the community.” April Baskin, who formerly directed diversity and outreach efforts at the Union for Reform Judaism, tweeted, “Questioning our numbers in a time of scarcity is a shameful power play.” Tema Smith, writing in The Forward, charged that the authors glossed over “methodological concerns” in the demographic studies they relied on for their analysis. One of the angriest responses came from Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the URJ, and a colleague there, Chris Harrison. “Articles like Sheskin and Dashefsky’s are indicative of the fear that resides in many white-dominated spaces and
are reactionary to the work that organizations like ours seek to do: the work of disrupting oppression within our communities, addressing unearned power and privilege, and acknowledging our actual Jewish diversity,” they wrote.
Andrew Silow-Carroll
In his responses at eJewish Philanthropy, Sheskin appears genuinely baffled that his article attracted so much animus. He said he was only sharing numbers that came from the Pew Research Center in 2013. “It does not mean that we do not support inclusivity. We do,” he wrote. “It does not mean that we are racists. We are not. If you think there is something wrong with the 6%, call Pew. We just reminded people that that is what Pew said. We did not come up with our own number. We simply reported a number from a reliable source.” There is a lot going on here. On one side is the wonky work of Jewish demography, which is a bit of a Jewish obsession. Numbers help determine the distribution of millions of dollars in charitable giving. Demographers like Sheskin are in high demand by communities trying to figure out how to set their priorities, serve the underserved and spend their money wisely. M a n y J e w s o f c o l o r, meanwhile, insist that studies conducted by white, typically Ashkenazi Jews reflect the biases of their
authors, and systematically under-represent the Jewish community’s diversity. At a time when Jews with African-American, Hispanic and Asian backgrounds are seeking acceptance and respect within Jewish communities, many readers argued, the article sent the message that they literally do not count. It also didn’t help that the article landed in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, with the toll of the illness falling disproportionately on AfricanAmericans and Hispanics. Groups representing Jews of color, like the Boston-based Dimensions, are concerned the data could be used to suggest that racial disparities aren’t a “Jewish” problem. I feel for Sheskin and Dashefsky, who I think genuinely believed they were contributing important data to a community conversation and didn’t intend to marginalize anybody. As they were careful to write in their original article, “responsible planning by the American Jewish community demands recognition that not all Jews are of Eastern Europe and Ashkenazi origin; and future research on American Jews needs to be sensitive to discerning Jews of Color.” They didn’t deserve to be charged by Jacobs and Harrison with “white intellectualism intended to diminish research conducted by and about Jews of Color” (emphasis added). As a journalist I want to report the most accurate numbers; studies and surveys should never be taken at face value. We also need to be on the lookout for “solution aversion,” when people reject scientific or academic evidence if it is tied to a finding they don’t like. But journalists, like pollsters, have their own biases, conscious and otherwise. As a white Ashkenazi Jew, I have
had a steep learning curve in understanding the concerns of Jews of color. Questions I would normally consider well-meaning or innocuous — including “What’s your
Journalists, like pollsters, have their own biases. Jewish story?” — can sound like a challenge to someone who is conscious of being in the minority. As Allison Barnes put it in a recent Kveller essay, “What Not to Say to
Jews of Color — and What to Say Instead,” such questions “can feel like a really aggressive interview for a job you don’t even want.” Writing about last week’s controversy, Marc L. Dollinger of San Francisco State University warned fellow Jewish communal researchers, “We need to open ourselves up to the possibility that our otherwise solid academic work plays out differently in the real world than we initially imagined. When we write about numbers, we are writing about people. And when our writing causes even unintended harm, we need to rethink our assumptions.” This debate over counting Jews of color is an opportunity not to opine but to listen. n
Jerusalem, the ‘Spot Beloved Over All’ David Wolpe
O
ver 3,000 years ago, Jerusalem was chosen. There are indications it was a place of distinction before that time, but David’s decision to choose a capital city located between the north and south — as Washington, D.C., is in the U.S. — was decisive. In the great poet Yehuda Amichai’s imagination, Jerusalem still whispers its original Jebusite name: “Y’vus, Y’vus, Y’vus in the dark.” The silent stones speak of ancient peoples, and even today notes are placed in the wall as if to coax the mute rocks into eloMusings quence. Through endless songs and photos and explanations, people have tried to capture the specialness of a city whose reunification was celebrated this past week. Although writing of his home in Sussex, England, Kipling may have put it best for lovers of the ancient City of David as well: “God gave all men all earth to love/ But, since our hearts are small/ Ordained for each one spot should prove/ Beloved over all.” Jerusalem, so often conquered and degraded, is rebuilt and gleams. Once again, as in the time of David, it stands as the undivided capital of Israel, one spot that proves beloved over all.

The ‘Public Charge’ Rule Puts Immigrants in the Crosshairs
T
he Trump administration’s anti-immigrant “public charge” rule — which denies a green card to immigrants who the government believes are “likely” to receive government benefits — is getting new attention in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. A motion recently filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with a provision in the proposed congressional Coronavirus Immigrant Families Protection Act, seek a suspension of this policy. We agree. It is both counterproductive to our communal interests and a moral outrage to enforce such a rule at this time.
Ann Toback is CEO of The Workers Circle.
The “public charge provision” has been part of U.S. immigration law for more than 100 years and was used by some administrations over the years to exclude from the United States immigrants who are dependent on public assistance. In fact, Herbert Hoover used this provision to keep out Jews who were unable to take their assets along as they fled Nazi Germany. Before the Trump administration changed the public charge rule in 2018, potential immigrants needed to show that they would not become “primarily dependent” on forms of public assistance. The new rule considerably expanded the scope to block immigrants deemed “likely” to use public assistance,

low-income housing assistance and Medicaid under most instances. Not only can this rule disqualify potential immigrants from receiving visas to come to the U.S., it can also prevent immigrants already here legally from progressing to permanent status, allowing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to pursue their removal. Those in the crosshairs: a population of predominantly black and brown, poor and low-income immigrants. The Workers Circle actively opposed the Trump administration’s rule, which weaponized the public charge language, long before this pandemic hit. From the outset, the rule had a chilling ef-
fect on immigrant families in need of assistance, and critics of the policy cautioned it would make our country poorer, hungrier and sicker. Experts warn the rule could impede our response to Covid-19. As Attorney General James and members of Congress contend, suspending this rule has become an essential response to an emergency. The rule is forcing people into the shadows. This includes those who struggle to understand the law’s complexity and mistakenly believe it applies to them, those who reside in mixed-status families and all those attuned to the derisive, hateful and scapegoating rhetoric of this administration and those
Congress Must Take a Stand Against Annexation
T
he stated intention of the far-right government of Israel to move forward with annexation of large portions of the West Bank has come as a shock to some — but it’s a step that has deep roots and is the virtually inevitable culmination of a process that began five decades ago and has advanced unimpeded by any effective opposition. It began within a few months of Israel’s stunning victory in the 1967 Six-Day War, when several groups of young Israeli “pioneers” set up small agricultural outposts in the lightly populated Jordan Valley. Averring that these were temporary paramilitary installations that could be readily removed, they elicited little international attention. With the advent of MeGil Kulick is a member of the executive committee of J Street-NYC.
nahem Begin and the Likud in 1977, and under intense pressure from young religious zealots, the Labor Party’s policy of restricting settlement to the periphery of the West Bank was abandoned, and Jewish settlements began to proliferate in the Palestinian heartland of “Judea and Samaria.” Concerned about the destructive impact of escalating settlement activity on efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians (aka “The Peace Process”), but loathe to confront Israel, the U.S. Government regularly criticized these activities. On rare occasions the United States acted more resolutely. In 1979, the U.S., despite its close relationship with Israel, abstained from a United Nations Security Council resolution stating that the settlements had “no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving ... peace in the Middle East,” thus allow-

In his famous June 2009 Cairo speech, President Obama himself declared: “The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements.” But the abstention and Obama’s pronouncement
were not accompanied by tangible action. Unsurprisingly, they were generally ignored or rebuffed by the leaders of the Israeli right, as settlement expansion continued apace (with one exception, the successful threat by President George H.W. Bush to withhold loan guarantees). Today, settlers in the West Bank and east Jerusalem number more than 600,000. The election of Donald Trump wrought a radical change in 50 years of U.S. policy. Far from opposing rampant settlement expansion, even rhetorically, under Trump we have arrived at a hitherto inconceivable situation in which the U.S. ambassador enthusiastically endorses it. Shockingly, the U.S. is now an active accomplice to the impending annexation, a central element in Trump’s so-called “Deal of the Century.” Through it all, Congress has remained largely a passive bystander. But today, Congress has one last oppor-
tunity to deflect Israel from this ultimately self-destructive course. There is still time for Israel to desist from crossing the red line of annexation and to seek a more constructive path forward. It is urgent that responsible, pro-Israel lawmakers make clear that annexation would be a reckless step that would have damaging long-term ramifications for the region and for the U.S.-Israel relationship. By condemning millions of Palestinians to live permanently in Bantustan-like pockets of territory surrounded by Israel and under military rule, annexation would destroy our shared democratic values and threaten Israel’s own long-term future as a homeland for the Jewish people. Now is the time for our community and congressional leaders to speak out and send a signal to Israeli leaders that annexation does not have bipartisan support and cannot be pursued without real consequences.

THE ARTS The Mother Also Rises, with a Book of Her Own
Safran Foer matriarch joins author sons with her first book, a ‘post-Holocaust’ memoir that reveals some family secrets. Anne Joseph The Times of Israel
A
s a child of Holocaust survivors, Esther Safran Foer says she grew up surrounded by ghosts, haunted by relatives that were rarely mentioned. But, as she writes in her book, “I Want You to Know We’re Still Here,” it was not until she was in her early 40s that she discovered a significant new BOOKMARKS ghost: that of a sister she had never known about. The revelation not only defined the next phase of her life, it would eventually take her on a quest to Ukraine.
Although it is a story about the Holocaust, Safran Foer refers to her book as a “post-Holocaust” memoir, in recognition of the events that happened to her family afterwards. As well as survival, it is also about the importance of remembering and history. “I wrote the book for my parents and my ancestors, and for my six grandchildren and their descendants,” Safran Foer tells The Times of Israel, speaking by phone from her Washington, D.C., home. “If I didn’t put this story down, it would be lost.” The message is a positive one, she says, that the family, which includes her three renowned sons — bestselling novelist Jonathan Safran Foer and his brothers Franklin and Joshua, both of whom are journalists and writers — is still here and growing.
“I Want You to Know We’re Still Here” author, Esther Safran Foer. “If I didn’t put this story down, it would be lost,” she says. COURTESY
Safran Foer describes her professional life as being characterized by the framing and telling of other peoples’ stories, having spent much of it working in public affairs. For almost 10 years, since its inception in 2004, she was the executive director of the Washingtonbased synagogue and cultural institution, Sixth & I, a role she decided to step down from in order to write her book. By then she was a grandmother and felt ready to delve into the past. “I almost had to do all those things before I could look back, I guess,” she says.
Safran Foer was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1946 and arrived in the United States in 1949 via a displaced persons camp in Germany. Named after her two dead grandmothers, she says she instinctively understood that her role within the family was to bring joy. “I don’t know if I felt pressure, but it was certainly something that always hung over me. I don’t think it’s unusual for children of Holocaust survivors [to think], ‘How can I cause trouble after everything my parents have been through,’” she says.

hat can we learn from a woman’s journey to becoming Jewish, and why on Shavuot, when the Jewish people received the Torah? Says Rabbi Ze’ira, “The Book of Ruth “tells us nothing about what is pure or impure or what we should or should not do. Why was it written? To teach us how great is the reward of those who do acts of kindness and are generous to the poor.” Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, is also known as Chag HaKatsir, the Festival of Ingathering, and Chag HaBikkurim, the Festival of First Fruits, when farmers streamed to Jerusalem to bring offerings Shabbat to the Temple. The Ruth story, Shavuot read on the day, is likewise set against a harvest background. It is a jewel of a pastoral idyll; after suffering and reversals of fortune, an aristocratic landowner marries a beautiful, impoverished stranger, establishing a lineage that will include King David and the Messiah. Most of the characters behave and talk to one another with utmost respect and refinement; they “give to” and cherish the other. The property owner greets his workers with blessings; when his heart is merry with the food and drink of an abundant harvest, he initiates the Grace after Meals. The reality is not as ideal. The Ruth narrative takes place in a tribal society during a period when the social fabric is so corrupt that even judges are affected. During a famine, one of the country’s leaders, an uncharitable man named Elimelech of the tribe of Judah, with his wife and two sons, flees to Moab, a nation noted for its lack of kindness when it refused bread and water to the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. Elimelech’s small family comprised three males and one female. His boys marry Orpah and Ruth, the daughters of the king of Moab. In Moab a blight attacks Elimelech’s crops; his wealth

iron only when absolutely necessary. But washing the white button-down shirts my husband wears to synagogue on Shabbat is a household chore I enjoy. There’s quick gratification in Shout-ing out First Person the stains like Wonder Woman, and an ease to smoothing out wrinkles (remove the shirts from the dryer while still damp and hang immediately) that eludes me in the rest of my everyday life. And yet, I was caught off guard when I recently spotted a pile of those shirts in their designated laundry basket in our room. That I’d forgotten about them in the more than two months since we last attended Shabbat services hit me with unexpected poignancy. It was as if they were calling out from the past, reassuring me that we will return to our old ways of talking to God while encouraging me to keep the faith in the meantime. women. I wanted to hear its former owner call out from the worn pages of the past, whispering that the world persists and that our faith must as well. I never found one, no matter how often I looked. Yet I fondly recall the day that a rabbi, another colleague from that era in my life, sent me a package from the Romanian countryside. I knew what history and holiness it contained even before I tore off the brown paper packaging to reveal the “Tzena Urena” I’d been seeking. It was easy enough to miss that pile of white shirts in the laundry basket, which is tucked deep into a corner. After all, my husband has others to wear at home. But I understand why its discovery launched this flood of memories of old synagogues and long sought-after prayer books on forlorn shelves: I miss our shul. Though I talk to God plenty from home, it is in our synagogues that we have the chance to visit Him in His own house. It is where we gather with other Jews to chatter together in our ancient tongue, to travel back in time while reciting the prayers we’ve uttered as a people for millenia around the globe. I know our current absence from synagogue is temporary, a loss that will hopefully be too short-lived for the pews to gather dust or the prayerbooks to feel abandoned. I imagine them calling out from the dark and quiet, Have faith. We’re waiting for you. We hope to see you again soon. ■

continued from page 22 Both parents were reluctant to speak about their past, which she describes as typical. “In trying to leave the past behind, they were trying to move on,” she says. But Safran Foer always asked her mother questions — though she was careful to frame them in a cautious way. “She was trying to protect me and I was trying to protect her. Again, that’s pretty classic,” she says. When her mother casually revealed that her father had been in a ghetto with his wife and daughter, both of whom were murdered by the Nazis while he was on a work detail, Safran Foer was stunned. This was the first time she heard her father had had a previous family. But she is adamant it was not
Esther Safran Foer’s family poses for a photo.
Esther Safran Foer’s mother, Ethel, left, with her younger sister, Pesha, their grandmother Rose, and their cousin, Freika. something her mother had tried to keep from her. “She was having a conversation with me and it slipped out. I don’t think this was anything conscious. When she kept things from me, it was mostly not to inflict pain, and also, maybe for her not to have to talk about something,” Safran Foer says. In 1954, when Safran Foer was eight, her father took his own life. The incident caused more unspoken pain within the family. “It created this whole other world that we couldn’t begin to touch,” she says. “It was easier to ask my mother about her mother than it was to ask about my own father. I just knew it was territory that couldn’t be broached.” Safran Foer is sure that her father’s Holocaust trauma was a contributing factor to his suicide, which was complicated by living at a time when mental health was not discussed. “Today, blessedly, these things are no longer secrets,” she says. Safran Foer writes that memory is something of an obsession that runs in her family. She describes her home office as brimming over with
photographs, documents and maps, some of which are in neatly labeled boxes and others left in piles. Memories and bits of personal history are also collected and hoarded in dozens of jars and Ziploc bags: dirt collected from her mother’s shtetl in Kolki, Ukraine, rests in a jar on her living room mantel next to rubble from the Warsaw ghetto. A lone tile found in an ancient Turkish synagogue is tightly preserved in a bag. Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2002 novel “Everything is Illuminated” is loosely based on a few details known about the family. A fictionalized account about Trochenbrod, the Ukrainian shtetl where his grandfather Louis Safran was born, the novel and subsequent film sparked new interest in the village from which the family had originated. However, some members of the small, active Trochenbrod diaspora community — descendants of families who had lived there — took issue with how Jonathan Safran Foer had presented it. “People were protecting the memory of their town,” Esther Safran Foer says. “It was not exactly
the vision they’d had of their shtetl. And I understand that.” At first, Safran Foer did not want to hear the critical phone calls that would come in, but eventually her own interest and obsession grew accordingly. “I had more and more conversations [with people connected to the town] and I was beginning to put pieces of information [about my father] together,” she says. Her book relays a dizzying — and at times confusing — number of relatives and others who Safran Foer comes across and connects with during her research, which takes her to Brazil, Israel and finally to Ukraine in 2009. Armed with a small, faded black and white photograph of two men and two women that her mother had kept, she traveled with her son Frank to try and find the family who had hidden her father from the Nazis, as well as information about her sister. “I didn’t expect to find anything. I had lots of people tell me, just be satisfied with going and walking the roads and smelling the air of the villages your family came from. And I was kind of prepared for that,” she says. She was certainly not prepared to track down the family who had sheltered her father and learn about the identities of the people in the photo. “I remember sitting next to Frank and saying, ‘Is this real?’ And, as I say in the book, he said, ‘A hundred and ten percent.’ If I had been alone and hadn’t had him with me to interpret and verify, I’m not sure I’d have believed it,” says Safran Foer. She also discovered the name of her deceased sister, Asya, whom she has since entered into the Yad Vashem database. In the spirit of Jewish continuity and tradition, Safran Foer’s youngest granddaughter has Asya as her middle name. Safran Foer is aware that she might never know the full truth about her father, but says she found what she needed. Her research is ongoing and due to the committed Trochenbrod community, people still contact her with clues and leads as new information emerges. But having spent many years devoted to the project, there is now a sense of release at completing the book. “It feels so great for me personally to have been able to put the story down,” she emphasizes. “The writing helped me deal with the story.” n
