A Happiness Guru’s Tips for Stay-at-Home Sanity
H
LOOKH U MAN
ow are you feeling? Tal Ben-Shahar, the Columbia University lecturer and “happiness guru,” assumes you’re feeling a lot worse than you were six weeks ago. And that’s OK: The author of “Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment” wants you to know that feeling bad is good for you, as long as you don’t wallow and occasionally allow yourself permission to express gratitude for things and people inspiring you during this crisis. Author Abigail Pogrebin interviewed Ben-Shahar April 23 as part UJA-Federation of New York’s online “CommUnity Conversations,” and about 1,000 people listened in. Here are some of Ben-Shahar’s tips for getting though the coronavirus crisis: Exercise gratitude: Appreciate the things that are going well, and express thanks to the people who deserve it. And don’t feel guilty about occasionally feeling good amidst the crisis. “Things don’t always happen for the best,” said Ben-Shahar. “But some people are able to make the best of what happens.” Exercise: Regular exercise releases endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, brain chemicals that play an important part in regulating your mood. Keep a journal: It’s a place to express your gratitude (see above) and acknowledge your emotions. Impose structure: Habits are good, in that it asserts control at a time when so much seems out of our
control. (Ben-Shahar says he doesn’t let himself eat anything after 7 p.m.) Go easy on the news: Tal Ben-Shahar. Ben-Shahar quotes the Rambam: All things in moderation. In the first two weeks of the crisis, he says he was addicted to the news. “Not healthy,” he said. “Now when I wake up, I check the news. But after that I disconnect — I come to this room to this very computer and I do my work.” Meditate: He calls it “present moment awareness.” That can mean sitting and noticing your breath going in and out, or doing yoga, or praying with “kavanah” — intention. Schedule connections: Speak with a friend or loved one on the phone or FaceTime at least once a day. Give back: “The most powerful intervention when it comes to increasing our own happiness is by giving to others, or increasing others’ levels of happiness,” he said. Lend an ear: To keep peace in your house, become a listener. “That’s what people need more than anything: to be listened to. Most successful therapists are the empathic ones, who can be there for you and listen.” Think small: “Learn to appreciate, and not to take for granted, the fact that another day went by and you only blew up once,” he said in response to a question from an apparently frazzled mother. “Small victories need to be celebrated.” Andrew Silow-Carroll
Pandemic Poems That Bubble Up

licia Jo Rabins writes lyrics and poetry that soar. Now her words float. Every night, after Alicia Jo Rabins long days, the singerJASON QU IGLEY/COU RTESY OF R AB I N S songwriter, poet and Torah teacher luxuriates in a bath in her home in Portland, Ore. — with candles, essential oils and plants nearby — and writes a poem. In “Bathtub Pandemic Poems,” she shares reflections, mixing ancient teachings and ordinary life that is no longer ordinary. “The first couple came out by accident,” Rabins explains in a telephone interview. “I stumble my way through the day, home schooling, trying to get my work done. Getting into a very hot bath at the end of the day is one of my favorite ways to completely shift my emotional reality, shift my perspective on things.” One night in the bathtub, she thought of some lines and jotted them down in her phone. (Editor’s Note: Don’t try this at home!) Later, after posting the poems, she got lots of responses from people
who said they were having similar feelings. The response nourished her, making her feel less alone. “I’m OK during the day, but at night I get scared, / Which makes it hard to breathe, which is a symptom/ Of the pandemic, which is what scares me. / Well played, anxiety, my old friend,” she begins one poem. Rabins, who won the 2015 APR/Honickman First Book Prize for a collection of poems titled “Divinity School,” continues to write daily and says that perhaps she’ll set her words to music, as she has done with other poems. She writes, “I used to whisper evening prayers/ Now I recite statistics/ And watch the curves/The angel of death/ Draws in the air/With his wing.” During the mornings, she teaches her two children, ages 5 and 8, and then her husband takes over. She then works on her own projects and teaches bar and bat mitzvah students via Skype. She is also writing a book of short essays about parenthood through the lens of Jewish text and Jewish mysticism, and is in post-production for a film of her chamber rock opera, “A Kaddish for Bernie Madoff.” The latter includes Rabins playing herself,

immy Cohen has hardly read from the Torah since his bar mitzvah. When he’s not working at his marketing job from his home in Queens, Cohen spends far more time these days reading children’s books to his 13-month-old daughter. But with a spark of comedic genius and perhaps a little quarantine-induced imagination, he put the two together in a video of himself reading — no, chanting — the classic Margaret Wise Brown picture book “Goodnight Moon” set to the sing-song cantillation known as Torah trope. Cohen hoped the video would resonate with other observant Jews whose access to live Torah readings ended when their synagogues closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. But the video quickly found a broader audience, with over 40,000 views and several hundred retweets, including one from the actor Joshua Malina, who shared the video with his 281,000 followers. Inspired by the original video, another Twitter user created his own version using the Sephardic and Moroccan vocalizations. Cohen said he was surprised by positive reactions from Jews spanning the religious and cultural spectrum. But in retrospect, he said, it’s not shocking. “I actually think people do miss the sound of leyning,” or Torah reading, Cohen said. Cohen has followed his original production with “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” another children’s classic, with trope written by a friend from Twitter, Avi Schwartz. Shira Hanau/JTA a bet din of Jewish grandmothers in track suits, synchronized swimmers and animation. In another poem, she writes, “As for love,/ Give it away, I tell myself:/ All your love, give it away/ While you still can.” Rabins is also doing live performances and readings, which are listed on her website, aliciajo.com. “Despite the limitations of the social distance protocols during the coronavirus pandemic, Yom Ha’Atzmaut will still go on this week. Recent Israeli bloggers have stated that they plan to blast Israeli music in their houses, eat Israeli food staples such as falafel and shawarma and join as many Zoom parties as the day will allow them. Those are great alternatives and excellent suggestions for how to maintain the typical spirit of Yom Ha’Atzmaut while still maintaining social distancing, but we can also celebrate the country and its 72 flourishing years by recognizing the many technological advances that have prepared us for a world of social distancing and coronavirus,” writes Sarah Horvath, a junior at Abraham Joshua Heschel High School in Manhattan. n a third round of emergency funding, UJAFederation of New York has announced nearly $9 million in new Covid-19 relief grants to support “newly vulnerable families seeking to access Jewish life, front-line workers, and needy Jewish congregants in the New York region.” The grants will fund Jewish summer camps, day New York school scholarships, synagogue funds for the vulnerable and personal protective equipment. UJA-Federation has so far allocated approximately $44 million to help respond to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the Jewish community. “At the core of the New York Jewish community is an incredible infrastructure of organizations that underpin our ability to sustain and strengthen Jew-
ish life into the future. In this third round of relief, we’re helping to ensure that the tens of thousands in our community directly impacted by Covid-19 are still able to access these critical Jewish resources,” said Eric S. Goldstein, the charity’s CEO. Aid so far has supported New Yorkers facing food insecurity, UJA-Federation partner organizations providing essential health and human services, Jewish Community Centers, low-income students and single parents. Funding has also ensured dignified burials, and supplemented the $75 million NYC Covid-19 Response & Impact Fund with other leading philanthropic organizations. UJA-Federation granted $300,000 to the Afya Foundation for a month’s supply of gloves and masks for its nonprofit partner agencies and $50,000 to the Hatzalah ambulance service to purchase personal protection equipment for their more than 1,000 volunteers and 100 crews. A Trump-Era Compromise at the Presidents Conference

ashington — The American Jewish community’s leading foreign policy umbrella elected its next leader on Tuesday in a confirmation vote that was anything but routine, having followed a week of tumult over Dianne Lob’s nomination. Over the past week, right-wingers within and outside the Conference of New York Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations launched a pressure campaign against the nomination, citing Lob’s role as former chair of HIAS, the venerable Jewish immigration group that has clashed with the Trump administration over immigration policy. Leading the charge was Morton Klein’s Zionist Organization of America, which has strongly opposed efforts to resettle Muslim refugees from Arab countries in the United States and Europe — something that has topped the HIAS agenda in recent years because of unrest in the Muslim world. Lob was confirmed in Tuesday afternoon’s vote, which was 31-8 among the 49 members eligible to

vote, with five abstentions. Another five were absent from the meeting, which took place over Zoom. But instead of beginning her term as board chair
of the Conference of Presidents on June 1, as originally planned, Lob will take over in April 2021. Amid the change in the selection process, the members also opted to keep the current chair, Arthur Stark, in his post for another year. The decision to make her chair-elect, although hailed by the Conference as an effort “to forge greater unity in the Conference,” was a disappointment to Lob’s critics — as well as to her defenders, who felt the delay was a capitulation to the right. “We are disappointed that we have to vote for a whole new process because of a few loud and harmful voices when we would have been proud to support Dianne taking this position now,” said Sheila Katz, the National Council of Jewish Women chairwoman. “She is ready now. She’s the leader we need now.” Lob is a Wall Street financier and a member of New York City’s Central Synagogue who recently finished a term as board chair of HIAS. Her selection earlier this month drew praise from across the Jewish world. William Daroff, the Presidents Conference’s CEO, emphasized Lob’s background as a child of refugees in his first official statement. “Dianne is a visionary leader whose personal history embodies the Jewish-American story,” he

me heartbroken. No shmirah allowed. No guard. Her body, like ours, is to be alone. The funeral director called me back. He was caring for 13 deceased. They didn’t know when she would be able to be buried; the cemetery would let the family know date and time. This funeral home alone had six bodies already heading to that particular cemetery. Later in the day, the funeral home called: Somehow she would be able to be buried the following day. On that Monday, I accompanied her burial, alone. This is partially because she has no immediate family in the city; three people could have been there. But as I said, in another time, dozens of people would have made the drive out to be there. So like my colleagues have been doing for weeks, I prepared my mask, gloves and rabbi’s manual and prepared to head out. I set up a Zoom meeting so her family could “be there.” The rabbi’s manual doesn’t have advice for this. The cemetery office had a list on the door of burials for the day. Close to 30. Nobody was allowed in the office building. And aside from mourners at funerals, the place was desolate. It’s jarring to see a place both busier than ever and emptier than ever. I arrived super early to wait for the hearse, but
hands to push some earth into the grave. I heard the familiar thud hitting a coffin. Something finally felt normal. then the funeral director called. He wanted me to know that her casket and body would come by SUV, as they were out of hearses. She arrived. And we waited our turn. Meanwhile, I had the family on Zoom. They shared memories, saw faces they didn’t see often. They caught up. It was both beautiful and so very sad. Finally it was our turn. I followed the SUV to the plot. There were the typical sights: employees of the cemetery, a large hole in the ground, a large pile of earth. There was her husband’s stone. I exited the car and prepared the people for what was about to happen. They took her to her grave, lowered the simple pine coffin into the ground and left. I didn’t expect that. I thought we would fill in the grave, as is customary. Jewish tradition does
not like to leave an open grave. But here we were. The SUV driver let me know this is how it is now. No time to fill in graves until all are dug for the day. So I was alone, next to an open grave, with a whole family on Zoom. I told them I was going to put them down for a moment while I used my hands to push some earth into the grave. And on my knees, that’s what I did. I heard the familiar thud hitting a coffin. Something finally felt normal. Then I rose and recited the memorial prayer. I had called this woman up to the Torah so many times, I knew her Hebrew name by heart. The family, together but apart, recited the Mourner’s Kaddish. I never believed that things like Kaddish, typically requiring a quorum of 10, would be OK to recite over Zoom. But times are different now. It is OK. And it’s beautiful. After the funeral, I spent most of the day at home. I even taught a class. But I’ve never been this emotionally spent from a burial. Then again, I’ve never been to one like this. When you clap for the essential workers, make sure you are thinking of the funeral home and cemetery employees who are burying more dead than they ever imagined. Think of the clergy who are finding every way they can to care for the bereaved. And think of this amazing woman. Who saw and survived the fires of the Shoah. Who was eyewitness to the worst of humanity. And still, she became the best of humanity. n

TIME HAS COME TO FIGHT BACK Years of neglect and misguided policies by mainstream Jewish leaders have failed to stem the shocking surge of Jew-hatred in America. Every Jewish institution now needs security. Jews have been murdered in Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Jersey City, beaten on the streets of Brooklyn, harassed in the universities, defamed by The New York Times and CNN, and now maligned in the U.S. Congress. We propose a “Ten-Point Initiative” to counter the assaults, as a starting point to re-examine failed communal policies. For electronic copies and to join a discussion, go to: www.peaceandtolerance.org/ten
TEN POINT INITIATIVE 1. DECLARE A STATE OF URGENCY. Publicly
declare that the community is under assault and will no longer tolerate demonization of Jews.
2. INCREASE PHYSICAL SECURITY. Change the risk/reward ratio for those who would assault us: increase police presence, neighborhood security patrols, facilitate legal gun ownership, and hold public officials accountable for inaction. 3. REPRIORITIZE JEWISH COMMUNAL RESOURCES. Sanctity of life is the
highest Jewish value: allocate more for defense of the Jewish community and less for “social justice” projects.
4. EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC ABOUT THE NATURE AND SOURCES OF JEWHATRED. Jew-hatred is being distorted
for political or ideological purposes by attempts to universalize it to the meaningless abstraction of “hate” in general. Jew-hatred has always been aimed at the elimination of Judaism (forced conversion), of Jews (the Final Solution), or of the Jewish State (antiZionism). Jew-hatred is promoted by lies and demonization, propelled by class warfare and now by identity politics. Launch PR campaigns to promote our narrative. Jews need to be a protected class.
5. UPDATE THE ZIONIST NARRATIVE.
Include and emphasize the oppression and expulsion of 800,000 Mizrahi Jews from Arab countries, and the related history of Islamic Jew-hatred. We cannot let Arab oil money and Marxist ideology dominate our high school and university Middle East curriculum.
6. RETHINK HOLOCAUST EDUCATION. Its impact has become less effective by being universalized. Focus more on the accomplishments of European Jewish civilization and the importance of a Jewish state. 7. EXPOSE AND DECONSTRUCT SOCIAL THEORIES AND RHETORICAL METHODS THAT RESULT IN THE DEMONIZATION OF JEWS.
The post-modern view of the truth, moral relativism, intersectionality, and a “diversity” that excludes Jews have been weaponized against the community. We have to fight the lies
and liars including those who use double standards and hypocrisy.
8. EXPOSE AND COUNTER THE THREAT OF IMPORTING JEW-HATING IMMIGRANTS.
Vetting immigrants about their beliefs concerning Jews must be a priority. Political correctness and false historical analogies must not continue to blind us.
9. RESTRUCTURE JEWISH EDUCATION (AND MAKE IT AFFORDABLE). Increase
emphasis on Jewish pride, Jewish identity, Torah tradition, and the centrality and importance of Jewish Peoplehood (Israel); inoculate our young people, who are being hijacked by utopian cults and simplistic solutions to the human condition.
10. BUILD ALLIANCES BASED ON MUTUAL INTERESTS AND HONEST RECIPROCITY.
Jewish support has not been reciprocated. Reach out to alienated, neglected working-class Americans of all races; build alliances with other victims of the Progressive-Islamist alliance including conservatives, Christians, and especially diaspora Christian communities from Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Sudan. The Jewish community has enormous talents, and significant resources which have often been used to benefit America and the world. We now need to direct the energy and inventiveness of the community to fight the epidemic of hate that is plaguing our community.

stopped coming because of social distancing rules. “I miss them very much,” Brajer said this week. Now they call at least once a week, to make sure that he is OK. “I feel better for the rest of the day.” But, Brajer said in a telephone interview, it’s not the same as a face-to-face conversation. Thousands of elderly Jews in Greater New York are in the same situation as Brajer, struggling to cope with the loneliness brought on by social distancing throughout New York City, the country’s epicenter for the spread of Covid-19. A wide range of Jewish organizations — some whose primary focus is on Jewish senior citizens, and others that have expanded their mandate in recent weeks — are rallying to meet seniors’ physical and emotional needs. Some are staying in contact with the seniors by phone and internet, others are organizing live-streamed classes or are delivering packages of needed food and medicine while wearing masks and gloves as precautions. Much of their work is coordinated through The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, which this week began a new initiative delivering kosher food packages to more than 1,000 isolated Holocaust survivors in the New York area. The initiative is funded by private donations. The agency rented a warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, hired two dozen employees and has scores of volunteers, said David Greenfield, Met Council executive director. “It’s unprecedented.

UJA-Federation of New York has approved millions of dollars in emergency funding for agencies serving the elderly and other vulnerable populations, and contributed to the multi-partner New York COVID-19 response fund. perating multiple elementary and high schools across the New York Metropolitan area and New Jersey, SINAI Schools has been serving children with complex learning disabilities and special education needs for almost four decades. Our schools provide highly individualized programming and specialized therapeutic services to meet the specific needs of each of our students, and each is a “school within a school,” integrated within a mainstream day school or high school to provide a fully inclusive experience. SINAI is the only Jewish special education school to be accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Students are grouped into multi-graded classes according to their social, academic, and emotional profiles, to create appropriate peer groups. A typical SINAI class averages between 5-9 students, with 2-3 credentialed teachers. The entire class works together on community building and social skills. For academic learning, children work in even smaller groups or one-on-one with a teacher, based on their individual learning needs in each subject. At SINAI, we teach to each individual child’s strengths, and use a multi-sensory approach to provide our students with different ways to learn information that might be challenging to them. SINAI students are full members of their partner school student communities – traveling on the bus together, eating lunch together, playing at recess and gym together, participating in school assemblies together, and joining their peers in mainstream academic classes when appropriate. SINAI at SAR Academy is now open in Riverdale, NY and SINAI Elementary at YCQ will be opening this fall in Queens, NY. Please visit our website: www.sinaischools.org for more information.

vulnerable during this time [of] extreme isolation,” according to an email from Selfhelp, which serves Holocaust survivors. While representatives of these organizations said few seniors display clinical signs of depression, many are “anxious.” Inka Lautman, 85, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor who lives on Manhattan’s West Side and is “homebound since March 1,” spent the war years as a child in a series of camps and ghettoes. Her current quarantine is very difficult, she said, because it “brings back memories of the ghetto, of the war. I’m reliving my childhood.” “I’m dependent” on the kindness of outsiders, including the Blue Card organization for Holocaust survivors, which has sent her cleaning supplies, she said. But, said David Schechtman, a veteran Blue Card volunteer from Armonk, “I haven’t heard them [Holocaust survivors] complain. These are people who are simply happy to be alive.”

reenfield said Met Council’s new kosher food initiative is meeting a growing need. He cited a widowed Holocaust survivor, unable to have children after medical experiments in Auschwitz, who called Met Council this week and requested help. “I have nobody in my life,” she said.
Project Ezra, which serves the frail Jewish elderly on the Lower East Side, has distributed donated masks and direct relief checks to recipients. Blue Card is “working with their local pharmacies to arrange timely drop offs of their medication. We are paying for survivors’ medication co-pays, as well as for deliveries where needed,” the organization said in an email interview. There has been a “drastic increase” in requests for the Blue Card’s Telephone Emergency Response System units — buttons that are worn either around the neck or wrist and are activated in times of emergency. “As survivors are home alone, they fear any falls or accidents and are reaching out to us to have them set up with a unit.” Organizations that have begun to offer remote services include the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services and Jewish Association Serving the Aging, one of the city’s largest agencies serving older adults in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, have begun to offer expanded remote services. Jewish seniors “absolutely are not being forgotten” said Danielle Palmisano, JASA’s senior director of intensive services and business development. Staff members who make home deliveries are trained to observe if the recipients need anything besides food, and participants in the phone and Zoom sessions also try to be alert to other signs of need, she said. The main need of most, Palmisano said, is “social contact … having someone reach out to them.” JASA has restructured its “Sundays at JASA” series of classes and Dorot has transferred its “University Without Walls” to online meetings

via Zoom. Dorot has recently recruited more than 1,700 new volunteers for its Caring Calls program; participants call a senior twice a week. Rabbi Moshe Wiener, executive director of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, said the organization provides telephone reassurance calls to “thousands of isolated seniors.” A primary goal of its services — including food delivery and its Connect2: Friendly Visiting for Holocaust Survivors program — is to keep seniors in their own homes and out of nursing homes, “among the most dangerous places on the planet.” With funding from the Claims Conference and assistance from the Israeli-American Council, the Coney Island institution arranges for delivery of kosher food from two restaurants, Sage Kitchen in Manhattan and Shnitzi in Brooklyn. Several other Jewish groups have expanded their work with seniors since the coronavirus crisis began. Among them: ■ Yeshiva University, whose students have partnered with Met Council to prepare food packages for hundreds of Jewish seniors; ■ The network of Masbia kosher soup kitchens and food distribution centers, which has begun making deliveries to homebound people, including those unable to leave their home because of quarantine. Masbia has already exceeded its budget for the entire year, said Alexander Rapaport, the agency’s founding director; ■ Volunteers from Repair the World, the Jewish service organization, deliver food packages to isolated Holocaust survivors in South Brooklyn and keep in touch as pen pals, said Rachel Figurasmith, executive director of Repair the World NYC. Without the help of these organizations, the lives of isolated seniors would be “miserable — people would be starving,” said Mark Meridy, executive director of Dorot. Dasha Rittenberg, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor who lives on the Upper West Side, said she has not left her apartment for two months. Rittenberg, who is “92 … something like that,” said she spends her time reading and listening to music. “I do a lot of memory,” she said. Blue Card has helped her with financial aid and household supplies, and volunteers call her regularly. “They help a lot.” Rittenberg said she is counting the days until she can step outside again. As is Robert Brajer, in his Morningside Heights apartment. He’s waiting for the visits from his Dorot volunteers to resume. “I’m dying to be able to see people,” he said. ■

Summer Camp continued from page 1
America, which represents 150 Jewish day camps and 25 overnight camps with 100,000 campers and staff. Directors of three Jewish overnight camps, from the Conservative Ramah movement, told JTA that camp is likely to at least be postponed, if not canceled outright. But they also are also assuring parents that they are preparing to open if they can. Based upon briefings he has received, Krakow said he expects more deferred openings and “potential cancellations.” “Camps are working closely with their medical advisory committees, and those whose summer seasons start early will be compelled to make decisions and we’ll hear of deferred openings,” he said. “I would not be surprised to hear announcements that affect the entire summer. It’s possible there will be announcements about delays and potential cancellations.” And if camps are allowed to open, one parent said she fully expects to have to sign a waiver saying she will not sue should her child contract Covid-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected shortly to publish guidelines for summer camps. A draft copy, obtained by Fox News, reportedly calls for camps in states that are in Phase One of the administration’s reopening plan to be restricted to the children of essential workers. Those in phase two would be permitted to serve only children who live in the local area. And states in phase three would be restricted to those from limited transmission areas. But Jeremy Fingerman, CEO of the Foundation for Jewish Camps, stressed in a statement that those are only draft suggestions that might apply to day camps only. “Our most pressing challenges are for overnight camps because of the lead time required, and we do not yet have any information on the CDC guidelines for overnight camps,” he said. In addition, it is not known what phase New York State will be in when camps are slated to open, pointed out Susi Lupert, executive director of the American Camp Association of New York and New Jersey. “These are just guidelines and have nothing to do with the Department of Health licensing of camps,” she said. “We’re talking about something 60 days away; the world has changed in the last 30 days. That’s a long time. We believe that if the infection rate goes down as it has been there is hope we can see summer camps happen. I believe they will be able to open in some capacity.” Two-thirds of overnight camps in the Northeast were scheduled to open on June 30 or later, according to Fingerman, giving them “another three or four weeks before they have to make a final call. The American Camp Association has been working with the CDC and is expected to follow the CDC’s guidelines for camps. Once the CDC guidelines are in place and the ACA has announced its plan of operaton, it would be up to the states to review them and “come out
Hungry for the camp experience: Some parents say their children will be “heartbroken” if summer camp is cancelled. JTA with certain mandates by mid-May that would say here is how to do camp this summer,” said Stadlin. “And those mandates might dictate to camps whether to open or not.” Many camps expect fewer campers this summer because the peak recruitment period was March and April, when states in the Northeast, as well as most states in the country, were locked down. Horwitz said she fears that if they are prevented from opening, “it would be devastating for our campers and our business model. All Jewish camps are nonprofit and we don’t have war chests or enormous endowments. This kind of closure could cause enormous financial hardship.” UJA-Federation of New York said it is allocating up to $6 million to support sleepaway and day camps, which it says will face “enormous budget shortfalls.” The Massachusetts-based Harold Grinspoon Foundation has announced a matching grant challenge of up to $10 million to help support Jewish camps, matching $1 for every $2 each camp raises. Over the last two decades, it has donated nearly $19 million in challenges, which camps have leveraged to raise more than $300 million. A 2018 census by the Foundation for Jewish Camp found that for the 155 day camps reporting financial details, total revenue amounted to $134 million for the summer. The average total revenue per camp is highest in the Northeast at about $1.1 million, the census reported, nearly double the average in the West. ‘Not giving up’ Some camps have already announced they will not operate this summer. Among them is Seeds of Peace Camp, which canceled both sessions. Founded in 1993, it brings youth and educators from areas of conflict to its camp in Maine. It cited such difficulties as getting travel permits and U.S.
visas for participants. Those same difficulties may prevent Jewish camps from hosting Israeli shlichim, or emissaries, who in partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel come to the U.S. to foster campers’ Jewish identity and feelings of connection to Israel. Helene Drobenare Horwitz, executive director of Young Judaea Sprout Camps, said the organization’s camps usually host 35 to 40 shlichim. Nevertheless, she said she is “still optimistic for some sort of [camp this] summer. We’re not giving up. Nobody wants it more than us. We would move heaven and Earth to make this happen because we all understand that for everyone’s mental, emotional and social health we all need it.” On the whole, stressed Rabbi Mitchell Cohen, Camp Ramah’s national director, “summer camps are very healthy places — outdoors and away from technology and filled with people who are at lowschool, and was a frequent contr risk for the virus, assuming we screen out thoseish newspapers, including the J who are at high risk.” Jewish Week. It has 80 private rooms that had been used for senior citizens. “If we could use them [for campers], it would make social distancing easier,” said its executive director, Adam Weinstein. n

“Maybe activities will be just with others in the same bunk” to limit exposure to other campers, Stadlin said. “Maybe meals will be served in different shifts so the dining room will not be so crowded.” Because he heard new rules will require no more than 20 youngsters on a 60-seat bus, Rick Lewis, CEO of two JCCs on Long Island, said he will be encouraging parents to drive their children, which will reduce the price of day camp. “We are planning for the unknown,” he said. “We can’t wait for the rules to come out. Stressing the Uniqueness of the Holocaust
Regarding your April 17 story, “Shoah Museums Telling a Multicultural Story”: In 2015, as a result of visiting the Dallas Holocaust Museum and reading your Jewish Week article then on Holocaust education (marking 70 years after the Auschwitz liberation), I wrote to 12 American Holocaust museums and Jewish educational organizations begging them not to include other persecutions in their Holocaust education. (Although not part of the Holocaust, I believe the Roma should have some educational voice as well.) The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., was among the 12. I heard from only one educational organization that did not address my plea. All 12 mailings included a copy of your 2015 Jewish Week article as well as opinion pieces from The New York Times and Newsday. When we visit the National Civil Rights Museum built around the former Lorraine Motel, in Memphis, where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, it is about black civil rights alone, as it should be. It does not include women’s and Native American civil rights. The museum stays on point, as it should. That’s part of the impact. The uniqueness of the Holocaust is obscured when we make it a group activity. Those that promote this inclusion believe it brings in those who might otherwise not be interested. However, as a result of this misguided quest, many young people believe that the Holocaust includes all people murdered by Germans/Nazis. They don’t know the most basic fact, that the Holocaust is the Jewish experience alone. Naomi Silverberg Schwartz
Bergen County Rabbis and the Common Good
Thank you for Steve Lipman’s piece acknowledging the foresight of our local elected officials, and most notably the members of the Rabbinic Council of Bergen County (“How Teaneck Eased the Grip of Coronavirus,” April 24). The RCBC rabbis showed incredible foresight, vision and courage in forcing our way of life to be altered in unimaginable ways, for the sake of the common good. At first glance, the pronouncement published on March 12 was scary, seemingly harsh, and thought to be overreaching. In hindsight, the RCBC saved lives. Period. The textbooks will teach their actions and use their wisdom in working with all health and safety authorities as one of the greatest “game plans” in recent local Jewish history. Robert Katz Fair Lawn, N.J.
The Wrong Choice to Lead the CoP
The Jewish Week’s April 24 editorial, wrongly calling Dianne Lob the “right choice” for Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (the “CoP”), ignores the record of HIAS, whose board of directors she chaired. The CoP’s mission is to help Israel and the Jewish people. But resettlement contractor HIAS brought multiple lawsuits, promoted legislation and ran PR campaigns to bring non-Jewish (mostly Muslim) refugees into the United States from Middle Eastern countries, where 74 percent to 93 percent of the population is anti-Semitic (according to the ADL Global 100 Antisemitism Index). No wonder Jew-hating, Israel-basher Linda Sarsour has fundraised for HIAS. In Israel, HIAS’ primary activity has been opposing, protesting and undermining Israel’s efforts to contend with and repatriate illegal, non-Jewish Eritrean migrants who have preyed on elderly South Tel Aviv residents. HIAS has also been “collaborating” (HIAS’ term) with: Islamic Relief USA — the American branch of Islamic Relief Worldwide, designated by Israel and the UAE as a terrorist organization and involved in funneling funds to Hamas; and CAIR — an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial also involved in funneling money to Hamas; and anti-Semitic UN agencies, which HIAS relies on for its refugee streams. HIAS also signed joint letters with CAIR, MPAC (which opposes Israel’s existence) and hostile-to-Israel nominally “Jewish” groups such as JVP and IfNotNow. HIAS also joined J Street in publicly defending terrorist-embracing, Farrakhan-loving Linda Sarsour. Morton Klein President Zionist Organization of America (ZOA)

‘The Plot Against America’ Took Us to a Dark Place: the Present The ‘alternate history’ of the 1940s hit uncomfortably close to home.
I
t took me a while to warm up to — or actually, feel the chills from — “The Plot Against America,” the six-part HBO adaptation of the Philip Roth novel. Set in Newark, N.J., in an alternative 1940s, when Franklin Roosevelt loses the election to an isolationist Charles Lindbergh, the early episodes felt slow and conventional. I expected better from David Simon, the creator of “The Wire.” The TV version lacked Roth’s propulsive, evocative prose, and the tricky meta perspective of a real-life author looking back on his own family history through a historical wormhole. But that changed somewhere around the fourth episode, when the creeping outrages of the Lindbergh administration begin literally to hit home for the Levins, the Jewish family at the heart of the series. Private incidents of anti-Semitism blossom into a national program of forced relocation and reeducation, and Lindbergh goes from Nazi sympathizer to outright ally. Reactions to the show also began to shift, from critical shrugs to suggestions that it had become essential viewing. Credit history and current events. “The Plot” wouldn’t be as eerie or resonant if its alternative history felt farfetched. It doesn’t. The book and series remind you how powerful the forces of isolation were in the 1930s and early ’40s, when Congress passed a flurry of neutrality legislation and polls showed large majorities opposed to another foreign war. In 1940, the Republican Wendell Willkie ran against FDR on a non-interventionist platform. Lindbergh, according to historian Susan Dunn, was
in fact the “glamorous public face and articulate voice of the isolationist movement.” In a typical speech, Lindbergh warned against the U.S. being dragged into the conflict “by foreign interests, and by a small minority of our own people.” We often treat the turns of history as inevitable. They aren’t. The queasiest moments of “The Plot” came when characters almost con-

vinced me that American lives weren’t worth losing over European conflicts that had then raged for centuries. To their credit, a majority of Americans came around to the case for war by November 1941 — before Pearl Harbor. But we also know how majority opinion — for example, on gun safety, climate change and national elections — often goes unheeded under our political system. “The Plot” is also plausible when it reminds you, sometimes inadvertently, of the rot in America’s root system. In this regard, it’s important to talk about how the series deals with race. American Jews, like the Levins and the Roths, tend to buy ecstatically into the notion of the American Dream, because it worked so well for most of us: We rose from pushcarts to the professions, from the ghettos to the suburbs. The Levins, proudly
American, are outraged when asked to leave a restricted Washington, D.C., hotel; like them, we are supposed to be shocked by this rising xenophobia and antiJewish discrimination. This is 1940, however, and such discrimination, and much worse, had long been the reality for millions of African Americans and Chinese immigrants, to name just a few. I wish the script had done more to acknowledge this. It’s a subtext that lays to rest any idea that it couldn’t happen here — if by “it” we mean the systematic oppression of a people. Still, the series might have remained an interesting historical exercise if not for current events. “The Plot” is, as Simon admits, a subtweet on the rise, election and presidency of Donald Trump. It’s about a president who doesn’t accept some of the basic premises of American democracy, who has a soft spot for dictators, disdains global entanglements and is willing to make scapegoats of minorities to energize his base. It asks what happens when a populist appeals, successfully, to our neighbors’ most selfish and sometimes racist instincts. The finale aired on April 20. The week began with President Trump speaking misleadingly about the number of Covid-19 tests being made available and ended with him cancelling the daily coronavirus briefings after he mused in all seriousness about using sunlight and household disinfectants as treatments. On Monday he took to Twitter to blame the media for his troubles: “There has never been, in the history of our Country, a more vicious or hostile Lamestream Media than there is right now, even
in the midst of a National Emergency, the Invisible Enemy!” He could have been quoting Sen. Burton
The HBO series was a six-part subtweet on Donald Trump.
K. Wheeler, the Montana isolationist who serves as Lindbergh’s vice president in the series, and who in real life famously sought
to investigate the “Gigantic Engines of Propaganda” in Hollywood. Roth wrote his novel in 2004, when Trump was starring in a new hit reality show, “The Apprentice.” A year before he died in 2018, Roth told The New Yorker that a Trump victory was less comprehensible than an imagined victory for Lindbergh. “[W]hat is most terrifying is that he makes any and everything possible,” Roth said of Trump. Roth’s novel asks what might have become of America if it had chosen the wrong leader at a time of national crisis. The TV version aired when a majority of Americans decided we are living in just such a moment, and the consequences are being played out in real time. n
Seeking Sanctuary in the Crisis David Wolpe

have a book called “Synagogues Without Jews.” It contains photographs of synagogues, many of them beautiful, where the Jewish community no longer exists. All that remains is the empty sanctuary. It bears mute, eloquent testimony to the destruction of Jewish communities across the globe. In this week when we celebrate Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’Atzmaut, there are once again synagogues without Jews. The pandemic has emptied houses Musings of worship, and the sacred scrolls stand in the ark awaiting our return. Unlike the desolate sanctuaries in the book, however, we will return to the synagogue. Once again, celebrations and song and prayer will rise from the now empty seats and words of Torah will be heard from the bima. Our task is to ensure that Jewish institutions remain strong throughout this crisis. The challenge of the Jewish people in this time is to make sure that our sanctuaries do not become like those in the book — testimony to a community that is gone. Continue to support your synagogue so that the Psalmist’s vision becomes our reality: “Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning” [Psalms 30:5]. Take a Lesson from the British. Save Jewish Newspapers
M
y initiation into the world of Jewish journalism took place 50 years ago when I stumbled into a job reporting for the New York office of The Jewish Chronicle of London, the granddaddy of Jewish newspapers and an institution among British Jews since 1841. Reading recent reports of the imminent demise and apparent Between last-minute the Lines rescue of The JC, the world’s oldest Jewish newspaper, got me thinking about my gradual transition back then from a would-be academic to a career journalist. Those memories have taken on more poignancy of late, given the almost-death of The JC, the closure a few weeks ago of the

Canadian Jewish News and the deeply uncertain future of Jewish journalism in the U.S. at a time when it is needed most. But more of that later. I knew little about The JC’s proud history back in 1970. I was a graduate student in American literature, newly married, and eager for parttime work. Fortunately, I was introduced to Richard Jaffe, a warm and elegant veteran journalist who had covered Eastern Europe after World War II and was the United Nations correspondent for The JC. He hired me for two days a week, and over the next couple of years, with Dick as my mentor, I covered a wide range of stories about Jewish life in New York. Along the way my interest in dark humor in the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne — my planned master’s thesis — waned as my curiosity about how the Jewish community functioned, and sometimes didn’t, waxed.
Gary Rosenblatt Communities need bridges that can span our increasingly deep divisions. Each week Dick would communicate with the home office in London by telex, proposing various stories. The editors there would respond up or down, and if it was a go, tell us a preferred story length — usually short — as in, “Send 250 words on synagogue defacing.” They seemed to prefer
what I came to think of as Jewish exotica rather than in-depth reporting about Jewish life in New York. I remember being surprised at how enthused the home editors were over a story I proposed on gangs in Brooklyn who were stealing streimlich (fur hats) off the heads of chasidim and selling the fur. I thought the editors would ask for a news brief, but I was wrong. “Send up to 1,000 words, possible Page 1,” the cable read, as best I remember. The JC was more than a newspaper in those days. It was the bridge that connected Jews throughout Britain. With a large and thoroughly professional staff, The JC filled its pages with deep reporting on British Jewish life and the Mideast as well as a lively opinion section and glossy supplements on everything from literature to fashion. Part of the reason for The JC’s financial as well as editorial success was that, given that
the majority of British Jews lived in the London area, the paper served both a national and local audience. The social pages were a major source of income, with people from around the country paying to publish announcements of bar mitzvahs, weddings and obituaries. Dick Jaffe was a patient and generous editor, allowing me to take on meatier stories at times: a phony “rabbi” performing interfaith marriages; UN debates on the Mideast conflict; a bitter battle between Jewish and other minority groups over a major Queens housing project. I enjoyed most of the assignments, but I sometimes lacked the grit required for a hardened reporter. When a young Jewish man hung himself in Central Park after receiving a draft notice that would have sent him to Vietnam, I was assigned to visit the shiva house in Brooklyn and interview family members. But I
Zionism Means Feeling Safe at Home
Z
ionism is embedded in Jewish memory; in prayers uttered daily for 2,000 years for the rebuilding of Jerusalem; and in a religious calendar that follows the agricultural cycle not of where Jews live today but of the land from which they were exiled. The purpose of the Jewish national liberation movement is to satisfy the universal human instinct to go home. D u r i n g m y f a m i l y ’s Zoom seder three weeks ago, I was struck by the account of the 10th plague, when God passed over the Jewish dwellings in Egypt — their door frames smeared with lamb’s blood — and spared families from the death of their first born. I realized that divine protection then was like the “new normal” of social distancing: conditioned on our staying home. In every land in which our forebears lived they had homes that provided shelter from many ills, but not from persecution. What liberated Zionism from the pages

ing “Death to the Jews” in France, a nation he considered the cradle of enlightenment. Herzl decided it was time to go home — for Jews in France, Germany and Russia, in Morocco, Egypt, Yemen and Iraq. It was also time to provide a safer home for those whose ancestors had never left the land of Israel, or who had returned over the previous two millennia. Independence allows the Jewish people not only secure family homes but also a national homeland in which to develop cultural and communal institutions that uplift the citizens of Israel, inspire the diaspora and benefit humanity. Israel has served the world as a model in fields like agriculture, conserva-
tion, immigrant absorption, self-reliance, science and technology. agreed. He asserted that if Jewish newspapers are no longer around to serve as “the American Jewish public square” for dialogue and debate, the result will be more extremism and an even greater divide among us. Spokoiny said part of his role today is to highlight to foundations and major donors the importance of independent Jewish newspapers in “our Jewish ecosystem,” as necessary as day schools, camps and human services. I hope our community hears these messages and sees the closure of Canada’s 60-year-old national Jewish newspaper and the drama playing out in England over The JC as serious warning signals. And time for action. The group that rescued The JC last week said it viewed the enterprise not as “a commercial venture but as a community asset.” The consortium is establishing a charitable trust to control the paper and allow it to remain “a vital pillar of communal life,” it said in a statement. The Jewish Week has made no secret of its financial crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic. It was heartening and deeply gratifying to see that more than 500 readers have responded to the paper’s appeals for support, which has helped raise much-needed funds in recent weeks. But far more is needed to ensure the survival and sustainability of the newspaper serving the largest Jewish community in the world. As American journalism has seen the business model collapse and give way to a philanthropic model, it is time for our communal leaders — foundations, federations and major donors — to step up, or face a community missing the bridge that can span our increasingly deep divisions. ■
give thanks for the technology that allows us to connect virtually to our homeland and projects. In country after country, in century after century, the Jewish people were subjected to discrimination, hatred, forced conversion, expulsion and death. Anti-Semitism is a disease — an anti-social pandemic — that has crested and waned but never disappeared. Democracy and education are proven factors in mitigating the spread and virulence, but, like ventilators and PPE’s today, there is more demand than supply. The most effective strategy in allowing the Jewish people to control their own destiny is Israel’s independence. Especially in these difficult times, that’s something worth celebrating. ■

THE ARTS Cooking Up a Main Course of Coexistence In ‘Abe,’ a 12-year-old wannabe chef bridges an Israeli-Palestinian family’s divide. Noah Schnapp, as Abe, and Seu Jorge as Chico, his street chef mentor.

atherings in one Brooklyn Israeli-Palestinian family often end in political jabs that sometimes lead to harsh words. But the Israeli-Jewish and Palestinian-Muslim grandparents keep coming back to the table, that is, the dinner table. “Abe” is a new film about the 12-year-old son of an Israeli-American mother and Palestinian-American father; one side of the family calls him Avraham or Avi, and the other side calls him Ibrahim, but he prefers Abe. Caught in the crossfire, Abe SolomonOdeh loves food, and the only FILM thing he loves more is cooking; he hopes to finally bring together the extended family he loves, in peace, over a great meal. Conceived by Brazilian director Fernando Grostein Andrade, the coming-of-age film was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival. It was beautifully shot in Brooklyn by Italian cinematographer Blasco Giuratois (“Cinema Paradiso”). Noah Schnapp (“Stranger Things”), now 15, shines as the very likeable Abe, and Brazilian musician, songwriter and actor Seu Jorge (“City of God”) is cool and charismatic as Chico, the street chef who mentors Abe without his family’s knowledge. Chico, whose popular outdoor pop-up restaurant near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge specializes in fusion cooking, believes that “mixing flavors can bring people together.” In a telephone interview, Andrade explains the film was very much inspired by his own life. His maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland, who fled persecution in Europe in the 1930s, met in Uruguay, moved to Argentina and then “Abe” is available on demand and on digital.
moved to Brazil. His father’s family was Catholic. Andrade’s father died when he was 10, but before his death encouraged his son to become a bar mitzvah, which he did. He grew up close to both sets of grandparents and also to his very diverse extended families from the former spouses of both of his parents. He has warm memories of big holiday meals together, when his Jewish grandmother brought her varenikes, or Ukrainian dumplings. Andrade had been thinking about doing a film on identity for the past 13 years, since his nephew Joachim was born, also in a family of mixed religion. Coincidentally, he finished editing the film on the day of the boy’s bar mitzvah. Andrade grew up and continues to identify as a Jewish man, although at many points in his life was made to feel marginalized. He says that he turned to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict as a setting for this film out of a sense of responsibility. “You can call me naïve,” he says. “I dream about peace.” As part of his research, he and the production designer spent a month in Israel, meeting with Israelis and Palestinians, sometimes together, from different backgrounds, and with many in the food business. (In fact, he is now completing a documentary, “Flavors,” about seeing the Middle East conflict through the lens of food.) There’s great food scenery in “Abe.” Viewers will enjoy Abe’s bold creativity in his family’s kitchen and then the choreography of slicing, simmering and tasting in a hectic restaurant kitchen
— with Brazilian samba in the background — when Abe convinces Chico to let him work there. While his parents think he is at summer day camp, Abe washes pots and hauls garbage before Chico begins to teach him about cooking. As for Abe’s early culinary efforts — a ramen taco he brings from home — Chico says, “You’re mixing fusion with confusion.” Veteran actor Marc Margolis is kind and loving as the Jewish grandfather, even as he is at odds with his daughter’s in-laws. There’s talk of
English-speaking film. He collaborated with two Palestinian-American screenwriters, Lameece Issaq and Jacob Kader, who co-created the play “Food and Fadwa,” which premiered at New York Theater Workshop. Andrade worked very closely with them on the script, “to be honest to the Jewish people and the Palestinians, so that they could each hear the other’s point of view. We were dreaming what most people think impossible.” Originally from Sao Paolo, Andrade now lives in Los Angeles. While in Brazil, he ran a theater group for inmates in a maximum-security penitentiary, and later cast some of the people he worked with in his films and television series. He hopes to get involved in a similar project in the U.S. “In a penitentiary, you think you are going there to help, but after a while you realize that the people there are helping you — to broaden your vision, to understand other people’s pain. We helped them gain self-esteem and learn empathy, emotional tools they would need to start a new life.” Brooklyn was the last place that
Fusion cooking: Abe brings both sides of the family together over a meal. Abe’s bar mitzvah, fasting for Ramadan, drinking wine for kiddush in one home and abstaining in the other. After some drama and comedy, more failed dinners where attempts are made to “take politics off the table,” there are final scenes that hint at hope, delicious food and vibrant views of a crowded Brooklyn park that now seems a relic of the distant past. This is the debut narrative feature film for Andrade, who has made awardwinning documentaries and television series on social issues, and it is his first
Andrade traveled with his late father, when he was a boy younger than Abe. For this Brazilian, the film is a tribute to New York’s diversity. Referring to the current pandemic, he says, “We are in a moment when we need to rethink ourselves. The birds here in L.A. are singing in a way that they’ve never sung before. The skies are clear in a way they haven’t been before. We’re not the same people. We have an opportunity to think about peace and empathy, to see life through others’ eyes.”

stop the disagreement.” The new wrinkle here is that whether we admit it or not, relationships among others, especially in recent years, have gotten frayed not just at the edges but through the whole cloth. Tolerance and respect for another’s viewpoint has become a rare commodity. Asking each of us to love the other, the Klal Gadol, has become a difficult task. The goal is to bring back civility and affection among all Jews despite our differences. One thing we can do as a start is beginning the day with a pledge introduced by the Arizal (Isaac Luria Ashkenazi, 1534-1572): “I hereby take upon myself the positive commandment of ‘love your fellow as yourself’ (“Haraini mekabel alai mitzvat asai shel v’Ahavta l’raiacha kamocha”). For those who pray every morning, it should be said at the very beginning of the service. There are some prayer books that already contain these words. For those who do not have a fixed prayer schedule, this pledge can begin his/her day. Frankly, this goal is a high mountain to climb. But I truly believe that if we can get Operation Achdut started, the Jewish people the world over will have added a strong layer of Divine Protection for our people and an example for everyone else to emulate. It is something we will need in the weeks, months and years ahead. Rabbi Akiva knew whereof he spoke; the rest is commentary. ■

THE JEWISH WEEK MEDIA GROUP PRESENTS
ISRAEL NOW THE COVID-19 CHALLENGE JUNE 4 / JUNE 5 SPECIAL SECTION
A LETTER FROM OUR EDITOR IN CHIEF, ANDREW SILOW-CARROLL Dear Advertisers, The COVID-19 crisis is a global challenge from which no country is immune. In our annual special section, Israel Now, we’ll look at all sides of the coronavirus outbreak as it has affected Israel and its people. How did Israel muster its medical resources and political will to contain the deadly virus? What kinds of treatments and vaccines are being developed in Israeli laboratories? And what have quarantines and lockdowns meant for a densely populated country and its diverse population? To be published on June 4 in the Greater MetroWest edition of the New Jersey Jewish News and on June 5 in The Jewish Week, the annual Israel Now normally coincides with the annual Celebrate Israel Parade. But with the parade canceled and its activities moved online, Israel Now is an even more powerful and necessary statement of your attachment to Israel, allowing you to reach tens of thousands of subscribers and web readers eager to celebrate Israel in print and online. This year’s special section will look at all sides of the coronavirus, with a focus on what’s unique about Israel’s response: • How Israel came to exemplify a model response to the coronavirus, and what the United States can learn • Stories from the frontlines of Israel’s tech, higher education and medical science sectors, and the new approaches they are ready to export to the rest of the world • The societal impact of the shutdown, including adaptations by religious Jews, pressures on schools and parents, and the political fallout • A focus on those in need, and how nonprofits there and here are responding to meet the needs of the poor, elderly, disabled and disadvantaged • Thoughtful opinions about the future of Israel after the outbreak eases, and what it will mean for its leaders, citizens and neighbors

t first glance, life seems to be unfolding as it normally does this time of year. The seder plate is back in the storage cabinet, the tulips are in bloom and we’ve swapped boxes of matzah for yeasty bagels by the dozen. But really nothing is normal in this Twilight Zone of corona lockdown, not even the annual Counting of the Omer. First Person Each night for seven weeks, we recite a blessing and a simple formula — for example, Today is nine days, which is one week and two days of the Omer — to sanctify the passage of time between Passover and Shavuot. The trajectory between the two holidays, like our biblical wandering in the desert, gives us the chance to prepare ourselves spiritually for the gift of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. finances and very lives. I am usually glass half-full, and there are indeed moments that are easy, teeming with gratitude, laughter and memories in the making. But there are others that are rougher for our hearts to bear. It is then that I let The Shirelles croon in my head, “Mama said there will be days like this.” Indeed, both the upbeat, hopeful ones and those that make us feel we cannot hold out a minute longer. The final chapter of the Torah describes a heart-wrenching scene that keeps replaying in my mind. God tells Moses, the beloved prophet who led us out from Egypt, that he may not enter the Land of Israel with his people. Moses pleads with Him — Let me cross. Let me see it. But his prayer is only partially answered when God offers him a panoramic view of the Promised Land from the distance of the mountain. As I gaze out my window, Moses’ longing resonates. For now, I can only wonder when we will re-enter our world — picking up our lives, seeing family and friends, and returning to work, school and shul. On the day I write this, it has been 44 days, which is six weeks and two days of my family’s corona lockdown. But this is a marathon, not a sprint, and I know that the main thing — the only thing — is to make it safely across. ■

urging it to impose “appropriate institutional consequences” on the ZOA for what the students called Klein’s “pattern of racist and Islamophobic behavior.” “I am appalled that Mort Klein, who is an extremist leader, has blocked a woman from becoming chair of the Conference of Presidents,” Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, the co-founder of the Mizrahi Family Charitable Fund and the former CEO of The Israel Project, a nonpartisan Israel lobby group that is now defunct, told JTA in an unsolicited email. the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic was a factor behind the proposed change. “Given the extraordinary time in which we are living with the uncertainty caused by COVID-19 and its ramifications, this strategy is particularly relevant and impactful,” the statement said. But others attributed the decision to delay Lob’s term to the pressure campaign from Klein’s group, which spurred not just like-minded right-wing organizations to oppose Lob, but center-right groups to urge the Presidents Conference leadership to consider a compromise. Lob’s defenders say the pandemic frustrated efforts to push back against Klein’s initiative. Lob was unable to personally meet with the leaders of the groups to assuage concerns. She will also forgo the traditional immediate inaugural trip to Israel post-election. That trip would have provided photo-ops of Lob with Israel’s right-wing government and gone some way to tamp down criticism of her Israel credentials. The nomination fight comes as the Presidents

Conference is navigating its first professional leadership transition in more than three decades, as Daroff succeeds its longtime top professional leader, Malcolm Hoenlein. It underscores major, longstanding fault lines in an organization founded in 1956 with the goal of bringing the Jewish community together to speak with one voice on Israelrelated issues to the U.S. administration.

he injection of immigration politics into Presidents Conference deliberations underscores the degree to which the left-right divide in Jewish communal affairs has increasingly expanded beyond narrow Israel matters to reflect the country’s wider political discord. The group mostly lobbies the U.S. government’s executive branch. HIAS has clashed repeatedly with the current administration on its immigration policy, Lob’s critics pointed out, and has been lead plaintiff in at least two lawsuits against the administration. One possible result of the delay in Lob becoming board chair is that Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee who is much more sympathetic to HIAS’ immigration posture, may be president when she takes over. The White House, according to a Jewish organizational source, did not object to Lob as the conference chairwoman as long as immigration was not on the agenda — an easy ask, considering the Presidents Conference does not deal with domestic issues. A Trump administration official who deals with the Jewish community did not respond to requests for comment. The vote leaves the Presidents Conference openly divided at a crucial moment. Lob has been forced into a defensive position, emphasizing in a letter to the group’s constituents her bona fides as the daughter of German refugees and her embrace of mainstream pro-Israel positions, including rejecting the boycott Israel movement as “reprehensible” and calling anti-Zionism “a modern form of Jew-hatred.” Klein in an interview prior to the vote said the compromise was “somewhat positive, but minimal” because Lob’s election, once it occurs, appears irreversible, even if it is delayed for a year. One of Klein’s complaints was that Lob appeared to be uninvolved in Israel issues. But he said the leadership transition could stave off his criticism. “We do have almost a year to get to know her and see if she can learn more,” Klein said. ■

Seventy-one years after Israel fought for its independence, Magen David Adom is helping the country battle a different enemy. The coronavirus pandemic is indeed a war. Even if Israel can keep mortality rates for those infected to 1 percent, it will still mean the death of more than 30,000 people — more than all of Israel’s wars combined. Magen David Adom has been on the front lines against the coronavirus, but the fight has taken an extraordinary toll on MDA’s resources. We need your support to keep saving lives.
