The Taming of the Shrew

Macbeth

By William Shakespeare Directed by Caroline Byrne

By William Shakespeare Directed by Iqbal Khan

It will have blood; they say, blood will have blood.

Director Iqbal Khan (Othello RSC) transports our headstrong heroine Kate, to a Sergeant Pepper, Warhol 60s and to the rise of radical feminism. Will the fight against male supremacy prove too much as Petruchio attempts to control his notoriously shrewish new bride? Staged in the Richard Burton Theatre on the 90th anniversary of Burton’s birth, with this production we remember one of his most iconic roles.

Returning from a gruelling war, Macbeth is yet to face his biggest battle. Confronted with fame and adulation, strange premonitions and the deep longing of his wife, he continues his merciless pursuits. This reimagining of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, asks what does war do to men and women and how it is made manifest inside the head and the home.

Billy is looking forward to the annual New Year’s Eve visit of the legendary Snow Dragon, who will bring him even more goodies... Catrin’s 2015 UK tour marks the first time her own material has appeared as a body of work onstage and on record, revealing a new side of an exceptional artist and a lifetime of musical influences. Catrin is accompanied by a string section (The Pavao Quartet) and musician/ producer Lee House as she presents music from her new album Tides.

Clowes’ music explores a fascinating hinterland between jazz and contemporary classical music, combining fluent, thrilling improvisation with languid, evocative melodic lines and shifting textures. Her music explores a range of moods and sensations with quiet intensity, creating potential modern standards that combine innovation with her love of the jazz tradition.

You listen to it - or rather experience it as a contemplative contrast to the artist’s complex identity in a globalized world: identification with his origins, the variety of places he has lived and worked, his musical models and influences, his place among family and friends, and his place within the history of his art. This recording reflects Gilad’s relationships with his many homes; physical, geographic, musical and spiritual.

Two decades as principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra have made Paul Edmund Davies one of the UK’s most respected woodwind virtuosos. Over four decades in the concert hall, Peter Jablonski has quietly built a powerful reputation – and he’s still only in his mid-40s. A virtuoso of imposing power, he’s also got delicacy and insight to spare, and this programme – which places beautiful rarities by Grieg alongside Prokofiev’s electrifying Seventh Sonata – finds him playing the music that’s at the very heart of his artistic life.

Freddy Kempf is one of those artists who just connects with audiences – and whose intelligence and charisma make everything he plays sound freshly-minted. This former BBC Young Musician of the Year is always a welcome visitor to Cardiff, and today he combines romantic classics by Chopin with the magnificent, rarely-played sonata by Tchaikovsky. If you love Tchaikovsky’s symphonies, you won’t want to miss this.
