Narrative
by Anthony Neilson Directed by Jamie Garven What are you expecting? Narrative is poignant, surprising and very funny. It starts with a cave painting and ends with the apocalypse. Come into the everyday landscape of modern living: work, love, social life, anxiety and murder… what else is there? Former RWCMD actor Anthony Neilson, now a well-known director and writer, follows The Wonderful World of Dissocia and Realism with another epic take on the absurdity of the world we think we live in. Narrative takes everything we might expect of a piece of theatre and throws it in the air. What comes down will surprise you. Tickets £12 | £10 concessions (Under 25s £6) Bute Theatre

This duo have received rave reviews around Europe for their 2012 debut duo album Neck of the Woods and will be showcasing this longstanding musical collaboration. In April 2011, Norwegian-born/ Copenhagen-based saxophonist Marius Neset released his debut album Golden Xplosion which led to him becoming one of the most talked about newcomers on the European jazz scene. Daniel Herskedal is a Norwegian instrumentalist and composer who has defied the conventions of the tuba, instead pushing the boundaries both technically and sonically and creating a spellbinding and mesmerising sound. ‘The Norwegian partnership produce sax/tuba duets that swoop and purr’. The Guardian
‘ There were conceits that just had you shrieking with laughter … one of Viv’s better thoughts would probably blow my brains out’ John Peel, 2004
Liverpool’s Mike Livesley & his cobwebbed musicians re-create legendary Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band leader, Viv Stanshall’s manic, classic, surreal but fond masterpiece of quintessential English comedy. Sir Henry’s world is brought to life for our entertainment, enchantment & elucidation some 35 years after the cult 1980 film which many believe to be the missing link between Monty Python & Withnail & I.

SIR HENRY, photo Brian Roberts

‘Mike Livesley embodies to perfection the spirit and brilliance of Vivian Stanshall.’ Stephen Fry ‘One of the richest texts in the English comic language. But to witness it on stage is a joy.’ MOJO ‘Sir Henry is a comic masterpiece.’ NME www.sirhenrylives.com

Elin Manahan Thomas soprano Few composers have ever understood how to move the emotions as well as Handel. Elin Manahan Thomas performs some of his most heartrendingly beautiful arias and contrasts them with masterpieces of expression from other eras. Carissimi’s moving Lament of
Mary Stuart contrasts tellingly with Brahms’ Ophelia Lieder. Judith Weir’s King Harald’s Saga, meanwhile, sees the soprano taking on eight different, unaccompanied roles in one of the shortest operas ever written! Music in Revolution
Was Beethoven’s uneasy relationship with his teacher, Haydn, prophetic of giant strides to come? Despite even returning to Baroque forms to inspire his later works, Beethoven managed to point to an unimaginable future for Western music. We welcome listeners to discover for themselves just how this great man, born just prior to social reform and upheaval, was able to embrace the universal, creating a totally new emotional range in which successive composers could communicate.

Few living artists have such a natural connection with the baroque and classical repertoire; and this afternoon, music by Bach and Scarlatti anchors a recital to cherish.

Published later in Beethoven’s life, they offer a snapshot of the young man confidently finding his own voice. Llŷr Williams’s second recital explores these two gentle pieces next to the startling originality of the Eroica Variations.

Eric Sammut, David Hockings and Perc’m
‘Wood magic’ – that was how Elgar described the Violin Sonata that he wrote in the Sussex Downs in the dying days of the First World War. Today, it’s the dark, impassioned climax to a fascinating lunchtime recital by up-and-coming violinist Benjamin Baker – perfectly complemented by Britten’s feisty Suite Op.6 and a fabulous virtuoso homage to Schubert: naughty but nice!
In the world of percussion, David Hockings and Eric Sammut are synonymous with innovation, adventure and breathtaking virtuoso playing. But you don’t have to be a percussion fan to be swept away by the French flavours, hints of jazz, and ear-tingling sounds of this glittering lunchtime concert – as Sammut and Hockings team up with the Royal College of Music’s acclaimed percussion ensemble.

There are percussion ensembles – and then there’s O Duo, the percussion duo who set the Edinburgh Festival on fire with their show Bongo Fury and have been making one heck of a noise ever since. Today’s lunchtime concert is like a bolt of raw energy: percussion classics by Steve Reich and Philip Glass plus an explosive new collaboration with our own percussionists. Hold tight!
Forget about all that jazz, and relax. The saxophone doesn’t only swing, and in the hands of the great Dutch sax virtuoso Arno Bornkamp, it’ll sing, dance and dream all the way through this gloriously romantic lunchtime concert. From Schumann’s radiant miniatures through to Jenö Takacs’ spicy Hungarian fantasies, this is just lovely stuff, performed by a supreme master of his instrument.

David Pyatt was recognised as one of the world’s finest horn players while he was still in his teens – and he’s always encouraged younger colleagues. Today, he showcases his glorious sound in two real classics for horn by Mozart & Hindemith, and then teams up with one of our own rising stars, Michael Gibbs, for Richard Bissill’s spectacular Time and Space. A magnificent sound awaits you.
O Duo
Carl Nielsen was a country lad at heart – and there‘s just something wonderfully fresh and life-affirming about his joyous Wind Quintet. It’s a delightful counterpart to Ligeti’s fascinating box of musical puzzles and Barber’s dreamy Summer Music – and when played by one of the world’s finest professional wind ensembles, there’s no better way to brighten a grey February lunchtime!
O DUO
‘You have never seen me sad; let it not happen now, on parting…’ Schubert’s Schwanengesang collects the last thoughts of one of music’s most romantic spirits. Tender, heartfelt and profound, it’s a whole music-drama in miniature. And you’ll never hear selections from it sung
