PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Another exciting and eventful year came to a close recently, and it felt great to have a return of our pre-pandemic event lineups and attendance. Our Red and White Dairy Cattle membership continues to grow as the interest in the breed flourishes. We had another record setting show turnout at World Dairy Expo with 372 animals being exhibited in the Junior & Open divisions. I see more of this positive momentum continuing in 2023.

As a Board, we have been focused on bringing member events back and promoting more engagement for our breed. We hosted a member meeting at World Dairy Expo (our first since 2019) and appreciate those that showed up and engaged with the Board. All National shows had personalized coolers given to the champions of the Junior and Open shows. This year, we are looking to bring our National Sale back as well as host another member meeting. Look for those details as we get closer to Spring. Continuous communication is our main goal as a Board in 2023.

I want to thank you all for your continued promotion and advancement of the breed. Thank you to the Board for their service & dedication as engaged volunteers, and to Carley Krull for keeping up on all of our office duties. I look forward to interacting with many of you throughout 2023.

FROM THE STAFF DESK

For those that I did not get a chance to meet in 2022, I am new to RWDCA since February 2022. I grew up on my family’s Registered Holstein, Red & White, and Jersey farm, Krull Farms in Lake Mills, WI. Currently, I work full-time at Animal Health International as an Outside Sales Representative, and RWDCA part-time where I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with members throughout the year.

I am happy to report membership has increased in 2022 with 611 Adult Memberships and 190 New Junior Memberships. Our junior membership consists of 1,699 Junior Members.

We revamped our “Red Cow Connections” e-newsletter to go out to members multiple times a year. If you are not receiving these and are a member, and would like to start getting these, please email rwdcainfo@gmail.com with your email so we can get you added to the list.

Thank you to Sarah Thomas for helping with our February 2023 feature and to Mandy Sell-Stanford for her time and verification of the All-American process. I would lastly like to thank Sarah Wendorf for her assistance throughout the year and for always being a phone call away.

I want to thank our Board of Directors and the entire membership for your patience in 2022 as I adjust and learn the ropes. I am hopeful 2023 with bring more knowledge, efficiency, and progress to the association. Please reach out with any comments, concerns, and ideas. I am eager to help grow RWDCA and the Red & White breed.

Meeting Minutes | January 28, 2023

Old Business

• World Dairy Expo Membership Meeting: We held a member meeting on Monday of WDE in the Exhibition Hall. Thank you to those who attended. Great discussion was had on junior programs, future of the breed and more.

New Business

• World Dairy Expo Representative: Thank you to our long-standing representative is Bonnie Van Dyke. In 2023 we welcome Sarah Wendorf as the new WDE R&W Representative

•World Dairy Expo Sponsorship continued for 2023.

• 2022 Awards: We awarded RTIC Coolers to the Grand Champion of the Junior and Open show at each of the six national shows. 2023 awards still being discussed.

• Ambassador Program: Moving from the Queen program to an Ambassador Program. Ambassador will be responsible for attending events, representing the breed and its youth members, along with completing a project that is to be assigned by the BOD.

• FAQ Tab on Website: Working on putting a FAQ tab on the website it will include Coat Color and information on registrations through HO USA for now.

• All-American Contest: 2022 was delayed this year. 2023 will be 100% online entries, all online judging process, nominations to be announced in early December. Needs to be much more efficient this year.

• National Sale: Considering sale for 2023, Nick and Graisson are working together to move forward. Hopes of having a sale in 2024 along with 60th Annual Convention.

Seeking New Directors!

We are now seeking additional National Directors for the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association, to serve 3-Year Terms. If you are interested in becoming a RWDCA Board member please email rwdcainfo@gmail.com with your contact information and we will be in touch with details regarding elections. Please contact us prior to June 1st if you are interested. We are welcoming Board members 22 years and older that have a passion for the Red and White breed and leadership.

Responsibilities include attending all Board meetings, member meetings and being a partof various committees to ensure progress in both the breed and association. Serving as aNational Board member is rewarding and a great way to be a part of positive change for future generations.

The officers, directors and employees of the RWDCA do not necessarily agree with the opinions expressed in The Red Bloodlines. The RWDCA is in no way responsible for information contained in advertising in The Red Bloodlines.

JULY 15 - NEW TRANSFER/OWNERSHIP

OWNERSHIP/TRANSFER: For an animal (cow or heifer) being transferred to a Junior, or a partnership of Juniors, the transfer application must be received by the Holstein Association USA office on or before July 15. Except for animals purchased by and/or leased to a Junior at the RWDCA National Convention.

LEASE: All animals must be owned or leased by the junior by July 15 of the current year. Eligibility Requirements are:

RWDCA SCHOLARSHIP

•Any graduating high school senior or an undergraduate college student.

•Applicant or applicant’s parents must be members of the RWDCA for at least three years.

• Individuals may apply each year he/she is eligible unless he/she has already received a $1000.00 scholarship.

•Applicants must be from the United States or Canada.

**N EW 2023** RWDCA AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

RWDCA is excited to be providing new opportunities to all junior members. Though our Queen program was of high honor, history, and tradition, we are looking to bring a more prestigious and inclusive opportunity to ALL junior members. The Ambassador program is open to any junior member, 16 years and older, and if selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their time and representation of the breed. The RWDCA Ambassador will be responsible for attending RWDCA events, assisting with social media, and will be assigned a project by the Board of Directors to complete over the course of their one-year term. Additional details and the application for will be posted on the RWDCA website on the Juniors tab in March.

It is said that the maple tree symbolizes success, strength, and love. After her outstanding, albeit short career, the same can be said for Blondin Unstopabull Maple-Red EX-94. Although gone too prematurely, she will not be soon forgotten.

During the dawn of COVID-19, Maple caught the eye of Kevin Dobereiner as an All-Canadian Milking Yearling. Due to the barriers with the border at the time, pictures of Maple from Hodglynn Holsteins Ltd. of Ontario, Canada had to suffice for the time being.

When she calved again as a fresh second calf senior two-year-old, the partnership began with Dobereiner, Lindsay Bowen, and Bill Schilling; West Salem, Ohio was her new home.

The fall of 2021 foreshadowed Maple’s later accolades when she captured first place out of 16 in the Senior Two-YearOld Cow class at World Dairy Expo. She was even Intermediate and Grand Champion at the 2021 Canadian Red and White National Show. As she continued to develop, it became evident that she was extremely competitive. As a young cow, she even acquired Intermediate and Grand Champion of the Red and White Holsteins at the 2022 New York Spring Show. “From there, we thought there was never going to be a better opportunity to run a red cow with the black and whites,” said Dobereiner. “We hoped she would do well in the red classes, but we had no idea about the black and whites. We would never get another chance to try.” It was a risky move,

but Maple went on to captivate the audience and rock the boat at the 2022 International Holstein Show.

In an extremely deep Senior Three-Year-Old Cow class at World Dairy Expo, Maple topped the total of 33 competitors. With grace, she went onto earn Intermediate Champion Female and Reserve Grand Champion Female of the Holstein show behind 2022 Supreme Champion, Oakfield Solomon Footloose-ET EX-94 EX-98 MS. Maple easily grew to be a fan favorite, and that support never ceased. With the chance for Maple to compete in the Red and White and (traditionally) Black and White Holstein classes at the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF), Maple rose to the top of both. The day after ascending the National Red and White Holstein Show as Grand Champion, she did the same for the National Holstein Show. On the third consecutive day, Maple geared up again to be named Supreme Champion. “It’s more on the rare side to see a three-year-old be named grand, let alone a Red and White three-year-old running with the Black and Whites,” said Dobereiner. “The feeling she gave us was absolutely surreal.”

The only other Red and White cow to win the National Holstein Show at the RAWF was Continental Scarlet-Red-3E-95 GMD in 1982. Forty years ago, there was no separate Red and White

show, and Scarlet was the only cow to beat Brookview Tony Charity EX-97 in the show ring. For Tim Abbott, he could not wait to get into the barns at World Dairy Expo to see the cow that everyone was “chirping” about. “We admired the cow from afar ever since we heard about her as a milking yearling,” stated Abbott, who has envisioned to own some of the best cows of the breed with his wife and business partner, Sharyn. However, at that point in October, Bryce Fisher of R & F Livestock, Saskatchewan, Canada had beaten Abbott to the jump. “I’ll just keep watching,” Abbott said.

By December 1, 2022, the Abbotts finalized their partnership with Dobereiner and Bowen on Maple and a portion of her embryos and offspring. Dobereiner was ecstatic for the couple to join specifically because he labelled Tim as a “marketing genius” and was excited for the opportunities ahead. Tragically, just 10 days after the deal was signed and sealed, Maple took a turn for the worst and passed away. “This was an emotional hit for everybody,” said Abbott. “I have no doubt she would have been in the most elite group of cows in the world.” He also explained that good partners make it all happen. “If there is a secret to being a part of these kind of cows, it’s that we always buy them with people we know can get the cows across the finish line,” said Abbott. “We wholeheartedly believed in Kevin and Lindsay and in the potential Maple had to change the Red and White Holstein breed through her sons.”

When asked about Maple’s “it factor,” both Dobereiner and Abbott stated that she held her milk much higher than most other cows. “She could be bagged back-to-backto-back like that at the Royal because she really didn’t need that much milk,” said Dobereiner. For Abbott, he also expressed her dairy quality, length of neck, and flatness of bone was unmatched. They both agreed that Maple loved the show and the chance to shine in the limelight. “When it was time, she knew what to do,” said Dobereiner. “She was all business, and she never gave our crew a lot of stress when it came to taking care of her.

She looked better and better each day.”

As far as Maple’s legacy, it is nowhere near the finish line with daughters on the ground and even a pregnancy that has the potential to produce a bull calf. There may even be a chance to discuss cloning the legend. For the Red and White breed, the group agreed that the gap between the reds and blacks has lessened mor e and more over the years, and Maple had a part in closing that gap. “Maple shows that the right combination of pedigree and bulls can get you there,” said Abbott. “The red breed has come so far and shows that the best Red and Whites can compete with the best Black and Whites. Maple made that statement.”

Dobereiner would be remiss if he did not acknowledge and thank Bill Schilling of Wisconsin with the help of Maple. “He was a believer from the start and a partner right off the bat,” Dobereiner said. Maple helped Dobereiner and Bowen accomplish one of their lifelong goals together. “That is part of the reason we are so heartbroken. There will always be a ‘what if?’ What else could she have accomplished?” said the partners. They were struck when they saw the outpour of support and love from so many on social media after Maple’s death. They did not realize that she had such a following and admirers. “We can’t take the credit,” Dobereiner said.

“It was all her, and it was one hell of a ride.”
