There is now an apparent craze in the fashion industry for men to wear long skirts... do you think it will be a hit? Charley F Thanks for your concern Charley, the “craze” was in Enough Already [April 2013]. Thus giving you a hint to which side we’re on. What do you think of PSY’s single? Kieran S What’s with the PSY-related questions? They’re tactically similar.

“#Streetfest #adidasoriginals #RWDmag” Rednivars Thanks for the style update Ravi, glad you had a good time at Streetfest. You snapped many many sick shots, we bet you’re going to be first in line when it comes to next year.

Thanks Jamie for unleashing your writing talents, we hope you had as much fun listening to all that music, analysing mistakes, as you did writing about them. Assuming that this isn’t the last of your literary contributions, we await more of your witty observations.

XO Man Vs Koder - Burrito Challenge

T-Rex [XO Man] goes bite-for-bite with Velociraptor [Koder] in a hilarious burrito challenge for RWD TV. There are many big moments but the quote that will stick in your mind will be: “Lip balm in this b*tch!”

Super Soakers! Water balloons! Ice cream vans! Nobody told you, but the summer of your life has already happened - when you were six. You made a new friend every day and had never heard of body odour. Life was perfect. Don’t try to replicate it, you won’t come close. Supermarkets want you to invite your friends around for boy-girl BBQs [#summerlove], soft drink brands want you to share a fizzy can of deliciousness with your mates between youth defining summer experiences at festivals and weekend kickabouts (#bants), but you’re too busy staring on Instagram. Trying leads to failure too, so seeing @fucktyler splash @earlxsweat in the face with a #supersoaker on Vine will inspire you to hit your nearest Toys R Us, but all that squirting will invariably lead to one of your mates being pretty pissed-off about you getting his Jordans wet and your WhatsApps ignored for a whole weekend. The trick to having a sick summer this year is spontaneity. The minute you reach for your phone to capture that sixseconds of sun or the perfect angle on your perspiring cola can, make sure it’s worth it. Because the internet demands your attention and will never be satisfied by the bare minimum.

Let Koke Sing

SPORT:

MIDFIELD MAESTRO It’s rare that the workhorse in the middle of the park gets celebrated. The new adidas Nitrocharge boot is especially for those fiery footballers. Check out... the boot that will be seen on the likes of PSG’s Lavezzi and Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez in the near future. With the F50 doing so well for whippet-like wingers and the Predator perfect for those who can put the ball through the eye of a needle, it’s about time someone catered for ‘The Engine’ of the team. New tech in the form of Energisling arches that support mobility and an all-too-important mesh layer around the foot, means the unsung hero is in good hands. £150, adidas.com/football

What’s good, it’s your boy Charlie Sloth. Starting with music; K Koke has just released an off the chain new single with Bridget Kelly, Skepta and Kano have dropped the absolutely nuts Lay Her Down video, which is mad arty and retro. Giggs passed by my Radio 1 show (Monday night from 2am), and done his Fire in the Booth Pt.2 which has set the streets on fire. I definitely feel that this is gonna be Giggs’ summer. Catch him and K Koke at Fire on the Beach (fireonthebeach. net) too, which is less than two months away, I can’t believe time has flown so quickly. I also had the opportunity to have an exclusive Nicki Minaj interview, which was absolutely bananas; she’s actually a really nice lady and it ended up trending worldwide, plus Nicki Minaj told me that she fancied me. Kinda knew that for a little while still, but it was nice of her to put it out there. Check that interview on the BBC website, have a little buuuutchers. And lastly, my tip for the summer: Buy an expensive umbrella! Use it for rain or to use it to block the sun. It’s like a win win situation. Dun know the dun know cuzzz. For more follow @CharlieSloth

It’s just different... Check out...the latest rehash of an old book you’ve probably never read, (written by F. Scott Fitzgerald since you ask) The Great Gatsby. Don’t let the 1920’s theme put you off though, it’s literally got all the makings of a very decent film; chicks, partying, booze, death and sex in excess plus it’s in 3D and Baz Luhrmann is the mastermind behind it, so there’s nothing timid about it. Especially seeing as it stars the acting talents of Leonardo DiCaprio plus the score comes via Jay-Z, yes we’re not sure about the wifey’s Amy Winehouse rehash but Hova’s touch means everyone from Q Tip and Florence and The Machine to Nero and Frank Ocean also feature. ENOUGH ALREADY: STOP MOANING ABOUT THE WEATHER Why does everyone moan about the weather (be it hot or bloody freezing). We live in the UK. The home of terrible weather, what do you expect? If you want to have a sick summer, grab some shorts, sunglasses and the biggest umbrella you can find... Words Danny Walker Image Matthew Glasby

Ah, England. The only country in the world that lists the terrible weather as one of its main attractions (alongside Simon Cowell’s teeth, Kelly Brook’s rack and an 87 year-old woman who’s been watching the throne since 1952, (someone slide her a Max Strength Senokot). The only place on the planet that throws a party every time the sun appears in the smog-filled sky. The only nation that allow its people to take a day off when the weather gets a bit ‘leave it, yeah’ (OK, maybe it’s just us that pull the standard ‘Straight to the Park’ sickie, whilst desperately trying to avoid uploading ever-so-revealing Instagram images). Stop. For the majority of us, this cloud-covered land is our home and we should embrace the unpredictable, unreliable, suede-shoe soaking, newspaper destroying, umbrella inverting, football postponing, train timetable tampering, and ever-erratic weather. 20 / RWDMAG.COM

Don’t moan like a bish, ya bish. We should be proud of our random minutely showers. Every time you leave your coat at home, admittedly trying to soak up a few rays on the way to work/college/rehab, and it starts snowing from nowhere, think of it as a blessing. Turn it on its head; let the wet work for you (Pause). For starters, these atmospheric conditions might mean you’re running a little bit late... blame the rain. When you do arrive, you might be rude to a few people... blame the rain. The recent downpour may lead you to leaving two hours early and buying a fresh pair of trainers (with what was supposed to be the money for your girl’s birthday present) – erm, blame the rain. Also, when summer does kick in, around the third week of June for three days, the same rules apply. Don’t get all bishy because it’s too hot. We hate this. Everywhere you go, the sticky air

“…BE HAPPY WITH THE LITTLE PLEASURES IN LIFE, LOOK AT JAMES CORDEN’S WIFE, SHE’S NOT MOANING.” is suddenly filled with: ‘Ahh, it’s boiling,’ and, ‘It’s too damn hot,’ and comments like, ‘Sh*t, I might have to remove this weave!’ Be grateful it’s not snowing? Two days prior and you would have shagged Pat Butcher’s ghost if you thought it was going to give you a bit of sunshine. That’s the problem, people should be happy with the little pleasures in life, look at James Corden’s wife, she’s not moaning.

UPFRONT WITH... DANNY WELBECK At the launch of the new England kit [their first with new partners Nike] and fresh from the season of his career so far – Manchester United and England’s Danny Welbeck sat down with Tego Sigel to talk about his proudest moments as an England player, Wayne Rooney and more...

FOR SCANDEO VI AGE FOOT

How well do you remember your first England call-up? I was 14 years of age and I got called up for one of the Victory Shield games. It was a mad rush of adrenalin, so much excitement, my whole family was happy. I’ll never forget the moment I was told I was getting picked and when I met-up with the squad it was scary times, you don’t know what it’s going to be like. I was one of the youngest players there as well. It was just a little short cameo but it was something that I’ll never forget. What has been your most enjoyable moment as an England player? I’d say scoring the back-heel goal at the Euros against Sweden. There’s not much comparison [to any other moment in my career], the mad rush that you get once you hit the back of the net. I just knew straight away, as soon as its come off my heel it was going in. I just went crazy. I just want to keep revisiting [that moment] all the time. So what do you think of the new England kit? I really like the shirt. It’s probably my favourite England kit so far. I think the main thing is it’s us who have to make the memorable moments. It’s not the shirt that’s going to make us play better. It’s a very nice kit, but it’s up to us to do the job and do the talking on the pitch. Who is your all-time favourite England player? Tough one, we know... Thanks [laughs].There have been so many, I would have to say [pauses] legendary, I’d go Bobby Charlton and I think more recently I’d go with Michael Owen. [David] Beckham’s free-kick at Old Trafford against Greece was class, but I think watching Michael Owen at France ‘98 when he burst onto the scene by scoring that great goal against Argentina is something that I’ll never forget. Who has the best banter in the England dressing room? There’s always banter. But I’m used to having Wazza [Wayne Rooney] about, he’s always up to something, he’s always up to mischief, but all the lads really. Everybody has banter and it’s a good environment to be around. What do you think of England’s National Football Centre St George’s Park? I really like it. I think the facilities are top class and having all the youth-

levels around makes it more of a club environment so you feel like it’s a club away from home and it’s good to have all the teams mixing. Jordan Henderson is one of my best friends anyway, so to have him there when he’s with the under 21s and I’m there with the national team I can go and chill with him, so it’s all good. How does the international tournament experience compare to anything else you’ve done in your football career? Playing football as a little kid, you watch these tournaments on TV and it’s something you really strive for and to actually do it last summer was another great moment; I’m really looking forward to hopefully qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, [Rio] would be a great place to go and [we would] try our best us to go out there and see what we can do. Has it sunk in that you were part of an England team that beat Brazil? It was a friendly game but I think once you get on the pitch; England V Brazil is a massive game at every level so to be involved in that and to play my part was really good. We beat Brazil, I can say that! Not many people can say that! How far do you think this England team can go? We’ve got some really good players coming through at the moment and with the older players we’ve got a good mix, a great blend of experience and youth in the squad and the main aim is to win a trophy for England! Danny Welbeck wears the new England home kit, Nike’s most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly kit ever. Now available from nike.com. #theshirt

Somehow between studio sessions with Basement Jaxx, recording a sure fire hit with Wretch 32 (Blackout obviously), filming his reaction to hearing his tune on the radio (Google that, it’s hilarious), scoring and starring in a play at The Prince of Wales Theatre and overdosing on hayfever tablets, Shakka found time to give us a call for a little chat. If you’re a fan of his covers, branded Shakkapella’s naturally - created using solely sounds escaping from his mouth then you’ll already know about his skills behind the mic. “Humbled isn’t even the word... I feel a little more pressure now but it feels good,” the hype one tells us about Wretch wanting to sign him up. “When people like Wiley are saying I’m the only person that can sing without an American accent...” he continues to shake his head at the thought, the E3 spitter being just one of the many fans embracing his cockney swagger; something he decided upon doing at 15. The experimental single Sooner or Later started circulating late last year and now the self professed lovechild of Bob Marley and Chris Martin is about to drop an EP, inspired by not only other

“HUMBLED ISN’T EVEN THE WORD… I FEEL A LITTLE MORE PRESSURE NOW BUT IT FEELS GOOD...” musicians like Laura Mvula, [“I watched her live at The Tabernacle and I didn’t feel like I had limbs”] Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk, and Jai Paul [“that leak was like crack to me”] there’s also, “films, looking at buff girls, watching beef that spur me on to make stuff.” No doubt Shakka will be jumping on a few sets with Wretch and Basement Jaxx too but he also has a few dates of his own where you can take in his roots of reggae and dub alongside the sounds he’s dipped his toe into, indie-folk and dance. Although the Shakka YouTube updates may ease up a little, “I guess there’s a part of me that just wants to focus more on the music... I don’t know if I’ll be dancing to one of my songs getting played on [BBC 1Xtra] but maybe I’ll do the bogle to like a Katy Perry song or something.” @IAmShakka releases Tribe EP in July

SUMMER SWAG Each season, Duck and Cover’s directional take on trend-led menswear keeps us one step ahead of the fashion game. RWD and Duck and Cover partner up to champion the hottest emerging talent through the #readyforanything campaign so we’ve hooked up with the talented Shakka, Stylo G and Konstantin Ermakov who are all #readyforanything when it comes to creating one off music and/ or visuals. If there’s one way to avoid a terrible summer it’s to make sure your style is on point and the Duck and Cover floral polo is the way forward. To win this on-trend polo tweet @RWDmag #readyforanything @duckandcover_ duckandcover.co.uk

KONSTANTIN ERMAKOV You may not have heard the name but you’ll definitely be aware of the seriously sick visuals of the Russian-born, London-residing Konstantin Ermakov. Alongside SBTV commissioned videos for Labrinth, No Prisoners (“organising 10 cameras proved to be tricky,”) plus the Tinie featuring Earthquake and fashion look books, it’s the Skepta/Kano Lay Her Down that has got us fully gassed. “I heard the track on Blacklisted and decided to make a small web video, thanks to [TV production company] New Treatment I got a chance to write a treatment for the official video, you can imagine I was over the moon.” When the fresh faced 21 year-old isn’t getting confused for a runner on set, he’s busy taking cinematography tips from films and dreaming of directing future vids for fellow Brits Plan B and Mr Hudson. As for the future? “Just keep doing what I do but on a bigger scale, in a perfect world I would be travelling to film all around the world.” Follow @iKonFilms or @PimpJuiceUK 24 / RWDMAG.COM

STYLO G “I’m already taking on the UK and I’m ready for the world... when you’re a reggae artist, it’s more of an international sound,” Stylo tells us of his plans for 2013. After killing it alongside Diplo and his team at the Red Bull Culture Clash, (“I felt like I was at Sting in Jamaica”) Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury and Japan are up next, “even if there’s 20 people in the audience, I’m gonna have them jumping so expect energy, clarity, and style.” Balancing his dancehall roots with UK flavours, and keeping his sound in-house, there are wishes to work with Labrinth and Rita Ora whilst Basement Jaxx, Major Lazer, Lethal B and Lady Leshurr have already done the deed. There are even plans to bring fellow Jamaican Raheem Sterling on stage and with the likes of Idris Elba and Usain Bolt in his iPhone, who knows who else could pop up. Lastly his tip for a sick summer, “don’t get a girl, book a flight to Jamaica, rent a villa and switch off your phone.” @StyloG releases Soundbwoy 26 May 25

#PIERS (RUDIMENTAL), BENIGN BRAIN TUMOURS, LOVE ME AGAIN

JOHN NEWMAN Yorkshire-bred singer/songwriter John Newman has already infiltrated your mindset and he hasn’t even released a single yet. Known as ‘The Voice of Rudimental’ after appearing on No.1 hit Feel the Love and followup favourite Not Giving In, the 22 year-old tells Danny Walker that his debut Love Me Again is just the start...

26 / RWDMAG.COM

“No, none of us were ready for it man,” laughs the Island Records signee about not appearing in either Rudimental video, before agreeing it might have been a wise choice. “We all looked a right state!” Growing up in Yorkshire on a staple diet of Stax and Motown (“Yeah, my mum was the one who was playing a lot of those records,”) there was soon a need to liven up the Dales by creating music himself. “It was amazing until the age of 16, shooting BB guns and starting fires but then it became really boring.” Experimenting with classic programmes such as Fruity Loops, the sounds that were blaring from his room were more hip hop and house, and the likes of Jadakiss and Black Box evolved his sound, eventually leading to a ‘natural development’ and ‘song writing on the guitar.’ It took a move to Leeds before a seemingly shy, guitar-playing John Newman became a more outgoing, dubstep making version of himself, before a risky move to the capital really started to heat up his career. “I’d lost all of my friends and the only person who I knew in London was my brother. I just started producing more and putting everything together. That’s when I met Piers...” After meeting the member of the Hackney-based band (who he’d later befriend and live with), whilst working in a pub in London, it didn’t take long for him to make up his mind about the keyboard player/producer. “I don’t know what the word is,” John laughs when trying to praise his pal. “‘Schizophrenic,’ he’s got two different personalities. He could be a big sleepy bear and then bang, he’s on it.” So how did they go from being mates to making a chart-topping single? “There are a few stories going around but I was doing acoustic gigs in the pub and Piers got the other guys to come and watch me. I then went down to the studio and chilled with them; they were really cool. By the end of those sessions we had Feel the Love, I mean we knew it was big but we didn’t know it was going to be a No.1.” During that studio time it seems the process was very organic and it was as much them lending their sound to John as it was him lending his iconic vocal to them. “Yeah, they’re great at what they do and at bringing people together.” Hearing John Newman’s voice live and in the flesh, in my case courtesy

“[PIERS, OF RUDIMENTAL IS ] SCHIZOPHRENIC, HE’S GOT TWO DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES. HE COULD BE A BIG SLEEPY BEAR AND THEN BANG, HE’S ON IT.” of an early Black Butter showcase of Rudimental’s forthcoming material, you’re truly in the presence of something big. Mesmerising as it is memorable; it’s good to see that this Marlboro Red-fan’s solo work (“when I’m song writing, I like to go out for a cigarette and once I’ve got a few ideas I come back and see what works”) is being received as much as his collaboration with the quartet. The melodic Love Me Again is radio-bound, probably thanks to its coherent catchiness and multiple reloads from a certain taste-making disc spinner from New Zealand. “That was great,” the style-conscious singer laughs about Zane Lowe’s love of the track. “I can’t ask for anything better, it was basically 10 minutes on the radio.” And in terms of his look, John’s views are clear; he’s a trendsetter not a fashion follower. “Yeah, I never follow a trend,” he informs. “I just pick something and stick to it. I don’t wear what everyone else does - mainly because that is quite expensive [laughs].” So now the album is sounding good, “Yeah, it’s there; Love Me Again just sits in the middle and everything else sits around it,” he solidly states of the LP, and health problems have literally been removed (“Yeah, it was life threatening. A non-cancerous brain tumour was taken out just before the release of Feel the Love,”) it’s just left to the public to decide on how it’s received. On asking the fan of the summer months, it’s modesty as always. “I honestly don’t know. You never know do you? I like that because it keeps the pressure on. I just like making music and I’m enjoying it.” Love Me Again is out 1 July, for more @Johnnewmanmusic check johnnewman.co.uk

How many people can look back at last summer with a smile on their face? If you’re one of those lucky few, think about the rest of us for a second. The little people stuck in front of a computer screen or so hectic they can’t even think or so bored they made Dane Bowers PA look busy. So we’re throwing out a few ideas for making this summer sick... Images Sam Ailey

DATE A FIT GIRL We will not let you go another summer without having someone decent on your arm...

HAVE A WATER FIGHT This is a must, whether the sun comes out to play or not... There isn’t much to say about this one. Stop into Argos (providing you can wait 15 hours for them to move the Super Soaker off the conveyor belt within arm’s reach of you), the £1 shop (providing you don’t mind shopping for water balloons - half of which are already split - that have been on the floor all day) or anywhere that sells a big massive bucket [Insert your own Kelly Brook comment here] and you could be having a water fight within minutes. Make sure the girl/boy ratio is female favourable and sit back and watch your masterpiece unfurl. You could even offer said ladies a free (white) T-shirt so they don’t get their regular clothes dirty. You evil genius you. [DW] 28 / RWDMAG.COM

As the sun starts to sort itself out, please realise that you also have some sorting to do, in the love department. When we say ‘love’ we don’t mean the kind you’re accustomed to; the no missed calls, no likes on Instagram, begging for RTs, friendzone kind of loving. We’re talking about anything from girls ACTUALLY replying to your texts to a quick hand-shandy behind McDs. It all starts somewhere. The days when you settle for a 3/10 are over. The days when you rely on her beer goggles are done. Taking stock from the famous ‘Teach a Man How to Fish’ bars, we believe if you’re yourself and just play it cool, that summer link-up could be yours. And once you’re out there, you could be eating fish for years [Pause]. Think less about your next selfie and more about your next wifey! [DW]

DO THE JAZZ

JOIN/START A 5-A-SIDE TEAM AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng tells Ben Rebuck that the key to a great summer consists of just two things; friends and football... When you were younger, did the games you played on the Panke [a concrete court in Berlin] help your development as a player now? Definitely, I think to play on the streets is the best school you can have, you know even in life, to be tough, you always have to stand up. Is it the dream to play for AC Milan now? Of course, for every little boy, if you tell him they are going to play for AC Milan they are not going to believe it, so it’s a dream come true. Who would be in your all time 5-a-side? Me definitely, goalkeeper, I don’t know if you know him [Crystal Palace, West Ham and Aston Villa’s] Gábor Király. Definitely [Andreas] “Zecke” Neuendorf, a street soccer player. Then Ronaldinho for sure... I need like a technical defender...? What about your brother Jerome? [Laughs] No he’s too big. I would take Maldini at the back! Kevin-Prince Boateng appears courtesy of Nike Football’s #MyGround campaign and wears the new Nike FC247 collection

Nardene Scott met up with Swindle on the verge of releasing his album Long Live The Jazz and its accompanying world tour to see how the indie life is going, the importance of jazz and what pearls of wisdom the Croydon production maestro has picked up throughout his career. What do you think the Swindle from ten years ago would say about the album now and how things have changed? I listened to my old mixtape, The 140 [from 2007], in fact I advertised it in RWD, it had Ghetts, Nolay and all these MCs and it was interesting because they’re way different but they’re still kind of similar in a way. I think if I listened to it ten years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it was me but I’d like it. The environment is different now, music, generally is different. [In five years time] I would hope that all the people who are currently smashing it independently could end up being major label bosses. What’s the best advice you’ve been given over the years? Danny C, when I wrapped up my first mixtape and I was getting it ready to sell on the high street, gassed to the moons like this is it, he was like, look it ain’t gonna be this one and it ain’t gonna be the next one. Elijah said ‘F**k it lets do it ourselves’ [laughs]. Mala said, ‘Do the jazz, do what you want before someone comes along and does it.’ If you want people to take one thing from the album, what would it be? If there’s something that you can do and you love to do it, then put it before everything else in your life and that’s what Long Live The Jazz means for me. @Swindle releases Long Live The Jazz16 June on Deep Medi 29

DO A TRACK DAY World Touring Car Championship driver Tom Chilton tells us the only way to have a sick summer... Words Danny Walker

Talk us through what you do and how long you’ve been doing it? It started when I was eight and a half years-old. My old man had a little field on the side [of the farm] and him and his mate ended up finding four beaten up, failed MOT Ford Escort Mark IIs and he asked: ‘Tom, do you want to drive a car? Don’t tell your mother,’ I agreed, and that is kind of where it started. How can driving fast save your summer? Do a track day. For anyone who has ever got that urge to go a little bit quicker, ‘I wonder if I pushed a bit harder and pushed this corner which I take every day to work,’ which is a good thing to be scared on the road. If you think about going out with a professional you soon find out what a car can really do. And your favourite place to drive fast? Erm... there are so many. My favourite is actually the hardest in the world; it’s Macau. Last year one driver died in a Chevrolet and three riders died. It’s a mental circuit but I love it. I had a little crash on the same corner as the guy who died. As a driver you can’t think about that though. To find out more on @TomChilton_ check tomchilton.com and hot-laps.co.uk 30 / RWDMAG.COM

TATT IT UP Celebrity tattooist Kevin Paul on having a safe summer. So when did you first really get into tattooing? What was it about it? Early 90s. I think it was Guns N Roses. I was into their music and their look. I remember Axl Rose’s tattoo on his arm. I used to keep redrawing them at school. Tell us about your favourite tattoo? Rizzle Kicks, Harry Styles; it’s really hard to say because I put 100% into them and then I have to move on to the next thing. [In terms of my tattoos] Ed Sheeran tattooed me. That has a lot of memories. I’m quite attached to that. He did a guitar and wrote Ed on it and wrote my name in the corner. He gave me a guitar for my wall too. What would you say about having a tattoo that won’t wreck your summer? Make sure it’s something that you’re going to want for the rest or your life, not just for summer. Check the artist’s portfolio, make sure they’re good in the first place and make sure they’re comfortable in doing that style of work that you want, as most people specialize now. And then make sure it’s a registered studio. For more check Kevinpaultattoo.com

TRY OUT SOME NEW MUSIC Robert DeLong - who makes tracks with Wii-remotes, Atari joysticks and discarded controllers - tells Danny Walker why it’s good to saturate in other sounds...

LEARN A NEW SKILL

“Listening to new music is always important - I kind of grew up doing the same - I started to combine the nerdyness with music making a while ago. I saw people engineering [Microsoft controllers and Wii remotes] to make music so I went for it too. New music helps you grow not only as a musician so you can incorporate new things, but as a person, it’s a fun way to see what is happening around the world and understand about genres and sub-genres. For me, I try to listen to everything from folk music to hypnotic techno to hard rock. For instance in America people started to embrace dubstep and now its opened people’s minds to all kinds of dance music.” @RobertDeLong’s debut single Global Concepts is out

UK summers cannot be trusted to provide you with the endless LOLs you think they should. Take matters into your own hands and join Alya Mooro in learning a spot of polo over the summer months. Often referenced as the ‘Sport of Kings’, polo, the fastest team sport in the world, (namely the art of scoring goals by driving a small ball into a goal using a mallet while on horseback), proved to be supremely fun, slightly easier than expected, and a hell of a work out. We don’t wanna name names out here but a few people we offered this amazing opportunity to were a little shook to say the least but seriously don’t be put off if you’re not a rider; polo ponies are particularly small (so it’s not too far of a fall even if they do decide to bust a buckaroo on you). Take it up if you’re good at balancing, like to try new things, have good aim and a competitive streak. If you’re into strictly champers and mad hats check out polointheparklondon.com 31

We’re not talking climb Mount Everest, walk across burning hot coals or smell Lauren Branning’s breath in the morning. Nothing dangerous. We’re simply urging you to take a lil risk from time-to-time... OK, let’s put this in context. You jump out of a plane this summer; you’re going to remember it. Sit inside and rearrange your DVDs into alphabetical order (with a separate section for films starring Jackie Chan) and it will be forever forgotten. You don’t even have to actually jump out of a plane, as they have those indoor skydiving venues. So those wanting to just spoil their hair and not soil their pants, that option is perfect for you. Those wanting both, simply eat McDonalds on the way up. [DW]

preparing you for the best summer ever, we’re giving away the opportunity to arrive at one of the biggest festivals in style... This is your chance to ball out at High Definition festival on 29 June. #MOLLY RAPPERS, NAKED CHICK PICS, REJECTION, PANIC ATTACKS #RWD ROUNDUP

HANGIN’ WITH THE HOMIES

If you don’t know, you better get to know... By now you guys have already checked out the first episode of #RWDRoundUp with G FrSH, Yungen and Krept and by scanning this page with the RWD+ App (or logging onto RWDmag.com) you can catch jokes with the Renowned familia too. But being all for the people we’re handing over the power to readers to set the tone for the next #RWDRoundUp. What do you want the artists to discuss, or even do - if we can convince them? Crazy ish only please via @RWDmag using #RWDRoundUp For more from this talented collective check out renownedgroup. com

Quite possibly the most drama free way to see the summer out (and on the cheap too, if you’re down with BYOB) is simply hangin’ out with your peoples. So we grabbed a few of the Renowned family, Wretch 32, Funny Tummy, Wizzy Wow and Jacob Banks and basically played fly on the wall to their catch up/ gossiping/rant. Words Nardene Scott Images Sam Bond

WRETCH 32 Having just dropped the huge single Blackout, Wretch 32 tells us what he thinks about what else is out there...

ON MOLLY RAPPERS…

This is mad for me, this is so mad for me and what’s even more worse is that I’m singing [Trinidad James’ Gold] because I’ve heard it and it’s catchy. I’m not really into these rappers like this new sort of wave, I don’t know what to call it... but it’s not for me thankfully. Future is hard though, like he’s a musician, he knows how to make music.

ON THE BARRIERS FEMALE ARTISTS FACE…

I don’t know man, you know what’s mad, I’m so happy when I see like Rita and Jessie and all that, killing it! I wanna see a female rapper, it’s looking like A Dot, she’s got a shot now, I really like her, I think she’s very talented as well... She said ‘with a Tinie Tempah and a couple of Rita lookalikes’ Yeah I need that in my ear. @Wretch32

34 / RWDMAG.COM

JACOB BANKS Our 13 for 13 star Banks fresh off the Emeli Sandé tour talks reality shows and chicks...

ON THE X FACTOR…

If you’re a singer and you’re just grinding the hard way, it means you have to be a great vocalist and be able to write songs. If you can’t write and then you go on X Factor, people give you songs, there’s nothing wrong with that. I did X Factor because I was always nervous on stage and I must say, so far, it’s one of the most important things I’ve done in my life. Just to be around so

IDEO FOR NV WITH SCA WD+ R many different musicians and break out into song at like 2am, it’s a shame you never get to see these people on TV.

ON NOT MOVING TO GIRLS…

I’ve never moved to a girl in my whole life. I can’t, I’ve seen rejections go bad and when you see it several times, you just never wanna be that guy. Like you know when you go out and she’s just dancing, like breaking it down and one guy moves to her and she just stops dead. That’s long! @MrJacobBanks

FUNNY TUMMY He’s just that guy in the art world right now, and forever within the pages of RWD, and when it comes to the chicks...

ON SIDE CHICKS TO MAIN CHICKS… I guess the main chick is permanent and the side chick is temporary. All workers can get, what’s the word, ‘promoted’ though... not like that, it’s just a metaphor.

SOCIAL NETWORKS SHINE…

This is what happened, in like the past three months, six girls have given me naked pictures to draw them. Sorry if you lot are watching but that’s all I get, just naked pictures and phone numbers but I don’t call none, I don’t text or DM, I just leave it.

WIZZY WOW His production CV is no joke Tinie Tempah, Lady Leshurr and of course Wretch - but when it comes to partying...

ON NEARLY DYING IN THE RAVE… I never used to get panic attacks until I started going out with Wretch. Not that it’s his fault but I just used to think, you

know what, let me just go crazy, let me just let loose and then it’s just been like that every night. A lot of Disaranno, mixed with vodka and cranberry juice, once I’m drunk, I don’t know what I’m drinking, I’m just going in! Next thing you know, I can’t breathe... Panic attack. You should have seen [Wretch’s] face, you thought I was gonna die, like ‘I don’t wanna lose you man’. @wizzywow

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CO-SIGNS... I think I was saying to Wiz earlier that people buy into names and brands more than the actual product itself so I think co-signs are very important. I got co-signed obviously before the Rihanna thing by [American singer/songwriter] Elle Varner which then Rihanna noticed from that, I’m all for them whoop whoop. @FunnyTummy

#DON’T ACT RICH, MILFS, PHIL MITCHELL, REJECTION LETTERS

52 / RWDMAG.COM

We’ll let Guy and Howard off for leaving us a whole year without an interview because they’ve obviously been busy shattering the scene with a very much needed dose of decent dance music. Yes notedly Disclosure may only have dropped a few (albeit sh*t hot) EP’s ahead of their PMR/Island debut album Settle but diva’s they are not, as Nardene Scott discovers along with their penchant for cougars, Soho dives and doodling d*cks.

So how’s it going? How is the promo trail treating you? Howard: We both just got in different taxis, it’s a little bit mad! We’ve just been at Radio 1 all day, doing tracks off of the album and this old detroit house song. Cool, it’s near enough been hectic for you since the last time we spoke

“I THINK WE ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL MAKE WHAT WE MAKE NATURALLY, THIS IS THE SOUND THAT COMES OUT WHEN WE GET TOGETHER. WE HAVEN’T DECIDED ANYTHING FROM THE START OR FOLLOWED A BRIEF, WE JUST MAKE WHATEVER WE WANT.” -HOWARD

exactly a year ago? What’s been the weirdest interview that you’ve had since that? H: Yeah I remember, that was one of our earlier interviews [laughs]. We did our first Japanese one and you know they give you gifts when they interview you; so they gave me one of those headbands with the red dot at the front that said ‘Samurai Spirit’ in Japanese and I didn’t know what to do with that, well I wear it... only to bed, you know the drill. Don’t knock a free gift! Being on PMR, obviously you’re free creatively to make what you please but considering the likes of Dizzee is out there making generic dance, do you feel a little weight or pressure on your shoulders? H: PMR have been great, they’ve just let us do what we were already doing previously. They’ve given us as much space and time as we want. [Pressure] No, not at all I think we always have and always will make what we make naturally, you know, this is the sound that comes

out when me and Guy get together. We haven’t decided anything from the start or followed a brief; we just make whatever we want really. Thanks for getting Jamie Woon back in the booth for the smooth banger January, we were wondering where the hell he went? Whose idea was that? Guy: [Laughs] I think that was more both of us, we’re just big fans and he’s obviously got a great voice and the guy is just really cool. H: Yeah we worked with everyone in the studio and I think Jamie without a doubt was the most effortlessly cool, like everything he says sounds rhythmic. He’s got some type of hypnotic voice. G: Yes, Eliza Doolittle upon hearing [January] said that she had made love to his album. Sounds about right... What about Settle, what track do you want people to do what it do to? H: Grab Her because it’s called Grab Her and it’s about grabbing girls’ arses... G: [Laughs] No, in fact, the sample doesn’t even actually say that but it just sounds like that. So now you’re both all big in the game, who have you been sending out rejection letters to? G: [Laughs] There have been a few funny ones but we can’t really say, I don’t think it would be very respectful for the artist. We can say who tweets us, there’s like Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud, it’s pretty funny when she tweets and my personal favourite because I think she’s a bit of a MILF is Davina McCall. I like her a lot. She can listen to my music whenever she likes. So you’re into cougars? G: I’m just into Davina. H: [Laughs] Grab Her was actually written by Guy about Davina. Have you had any weird tabloid stories 53

linking you to anyone yet, like I don’t know, Nicola Roberts? G: Nah not yet, I mean there’s no photos of us together, so I don’t think they’d have a very strong case but you never know maybe in the future... maybe when she comes round mine on Friday they’ll be something there [laughs]. Riiiight. Who wouldn’t you mind being talking about with? H: Phil Mitchell. G: Barack Obama, maybe both of those together, we’ll take them for a pint. So other than dreaming about MILFs and sending out rejection letters, what’s been the biggest change? G: The hardest thing to deal with in like the whole job has just been the sleep deprivation. Touring America and stuff, you have to literally fly there, so jet-lagged then you just have to play regardless of the time. The sleep is bad because we don’t really fly First Class yet because we don’t want to act rich... H: ...and you kind of have to earn the money yourself from doing shows to do those things. Maybe next time, we’ll be able to do that; also, we’re not exactly divas so we don’t really like to beg things.

Smart move. How about the whole sketching faces idea, are you guys going to do this forever? H: I dunno not forever, maybe we’ll start drawing penises on our heads instead, which is what I normally do when I’m doodling... Nah, I think the white face thing came from our artwork and I just started pasting it on pictures of girls faces that I liked or actors. It just became a thing really because it got spread around the Internet. Beyond doodling d*cks, what are you looking forward to getting up to next? H: We’re actually having a joint birthday party (15 May). G: It’s quite epic yeah we’re going to The Box in Soho. Oh yes we know it, it’s just pure debauchery in there? G: Yeah it’s pretty crazy but that’s what I want so we’re going there and I think we’re DJing as well. We’ve got free alcohol so we’re just going to get absolutely drunk... Good stuff! @Disclosure release their debut album Settle 3 June and tour the UK this November. Before that, catch them at Parklife, Lovebox and so many more

“WE CAN SAY WHO TWEETS US… MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE BECAUSE I THINK SHE’S A BIT OF A MILF IS DAVINA MCCALL. I LIKE HER A LOT. SHE CAN LISTEN TO MY MUSIC WHENEVER SHE LIKES.” -GUY

#CALIFORNIA LOVE, LA BOUND, MOUTH FROM GOONIES

CHARLIE MEETS PLASTICIAN

Lots of people talk about it, but few do it. Moving to another country, if even for a short time, can be a daunting thought. But when Plastician swapped the cold winter of Croydon for the warm summer of California, it changed the way he approached music. For the K-Swiss California Love campaign, Charlie Sloth caught up with the dubstep don at a swanky mansion in the Hollywood Hills... Image Andres Reynega

Has LA and West Coast hip hop had an influence on you, musically? From back in the day, anything that I experienced that wasn’t Top 40 was gangster rap. It’s had an underlying influence from the beginning but right now it’s having a completely hands-on influence. It’s definitely playing a big part in my production and ear for sound. It’s changing my tolerance for different types of music. Everything I’m hearing out here is having a direct influence on the music I’m trying to build. Snoop was the first US rapper to jump on the whole dubstep sound. What effect did that have on the genre? I had a part in that whole project and put the mix together with Cashmere, who worked with Snoop’s management 56 / RWDMAG.COM

team. Snoop and Xzibit were on it and that definitely opened the mainstream ears to the dubstep sound. It also opened a lot of doors for Chase & Status as producers; they started working with Rihanna and Jay-Z. It’s like hip hop and dubstep have merged into the same scene, so you have rappers like A$AP Rocky working with Skrillex. The two scenes are hand in hand at the moment. What reaction did you get to Renaissance Vol. 1 with Benga, Snoop etc., that mixed dub with rap? All the producers I hit up to get tracks together were excited. It was a chance for us to work with rappers we’d been listening to since we were kids. Who would turn that down? Some people thought ‘He’s trying to make money

out of it and then they’ll be gone and there will be nothing left of the scene.’ Some old skool heads that want everything to stay small and in the community moaned a bit. They weren’t into anything that could blow it up. But the scene is still alive and kicking. It definitely had a big part in pushing things to the US mainstream. What’s been the best celeb spot so far? The best one I’ve seen was at Skrillex’s birthday party: Corey Feldman, Mouth from Goonies was there! I didn’t get a picture; I got too drunk and forgot. What effect has living in LA had? It’s broken barriers down for me as a DJ. I used to play lots of different stuff, but all around 140BPM. Now, I play what I want to play. If it’s good and I can work

MOVE SOMEWHERE NEW, TRY LA If you want to have a sick summer, you might want to consider a big move...

“LA PARTICULARLY HAS A SCENE WE COULD BECOME QUITE JEALOUS OF. IT FEELS LIKE A COMMUNITY AND A MELTING POT WHEREAS LONDON CAN BE A BIT CLIQUEY.”

it in the mix, I’ll play it. I felt I had to stick to 140 BPM when I played out, but why should I feel like I can’t represent all the music I enjoy? It’s been really good, it’s opened my ears to a lot of music I didn’t know existed. We’ve been blessed with amazing bass music in the UK and we tend to look at the US like their bass music isn’t any good. But having lived here and immersing myself, that’s not the case. LA particularly has a scene we could become quite jealous of. It feels like a community and a melting pot whereas London can be a bit cliquey. To see the K-Swiss California Love series with Charlie Sloth, including Episode 4 with @djplastician, check K-Swiss.co.uk, Facebook.com/kswiss.uk or follow @KSwiss_UK

What made you move to LA? I come out to the States every year around March time to do SXSW and the WMC in Miami. I figured I may as well stay out here and work on some music, have a change of scenery. Plus the weather is better out here as well! So what’s your advice for people thinking of swapping countries? You should do it, even for a short period. For me, it was really good. I went out here unsure if I was enjoying what I was playing and it’s been so good to see people playing what they want to play and making it work. If you’re in a daily routine you get into the same kind of things and life just ticks over. It’s like being on holiday, but a working holiday. We did miss our families and friends a lot but it was an amazing experience. Check Facebook.com/plastician for bookings, including fabric in June with Dub Police 57

THE BEST OF STAYING IN... AND GOING OUT...

AFTER EARTH

The summer is set to have more blockbusters than we’ll know what to do with. Empire Magazine’s Feature Editor, Dan Jolin, helps us pick the weak from the strong. Sony Pictures’ After Earth (7 June) looks like it’s the latter.

#MAN OF STEEL, NO MORE FILMS LIKE JOHN CARTER, PACIFIC RIM (PAUSE)

FILM

62 / RWDMAG.COM

EMBRACE THE BIG BLOCK BUSTER This month to fill us in on film, we’ve linked up with Empire Magazine’s Feature Editor, Dan Jolin. He tells us why a healthy blockbuster diet is key to a good summer.

MUSIC I’ve always found it odd that the term ‘summer blockbuster’ is treated almost as a genre. The word blockbuster was originally coined as a measure of success: a major hit busted blocks. Now, if film companies spend enough, cast the right stars and shove in sufficient visual effects, then it’s a blockbuster before it’s even released and ‘too big to fail’. (Although no movie is truly too big to fail just look at John Carter). Summer 2013 has no shortage of movies to choose from. Although, why choose? Work your diary hard enough, and you’ll have little problem seeing them all. By now, you should have seen Iron Man 3 and be gearing up for The Wolverine (out 25 July, see last month’s CICO). I’m looking forward to Man Of Steel (14 June), despite never having been much of a Superman fan - he’s a kiss-curled boy scout who only ever seems to lift and carry vastly heavy things. Yet here we have the men behind The Dark Knight (writer David S. Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan) on board, with the director of 300 (Zack Snyder) calling the shots, and the promise of a movie that will actually take the Last Son Of Krypton seriously. And it’s not all superheroes. Will Smith & Son (Jaden) head up M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth (7 June), in which they play futuristic kid and pop who crash-land on a world of dangerously evolved animals. Then there’s the gigantically exciting Pacific Rim (12 July), which stars our very own Idris Elba. If you need to know more, what’s wrong with you!? At the far end of summer is Elysium (20 September), latest from Neil ‘District 9’ Blomkamp, and starring a cyberneticallyenhanced Matt Damon [Editor: Reader, insert your own Team America joke here] as the guy who aims to break into a crazy, rich-b**tards-only paradise. Then there’s the wild cards: Brad Pittstarring zombie apocalypse drama World War Z (21 June) and Disney’s The Lone Ranger (9 August), with Johnny Depp, who seems to spend the entire movie with a crow on his head. There’s not a single reason to neglect the cinema these coming summer months. In the words of Ben Stiller aka Starsky, ‘do it, do it... do it!!!’ @DanJolin is Features Editor of Empire Magazine, the world’s biggest movie magazine

With the summer nearly upon us you need to make sure all of your music choices are on-point. Here’s some help...

#DRUNK BLACK RUNS, ALL NIGHT SESH, URBAN NERDS GOIN IN

SNOW DEEP Up in the dizzying heights of the Austrian slopes, our man Matthew Richards aka DJ Chewy strapped on his skis and dived into fresh snow, ice cold jagermeisters and enjoyed an unreal line-up, all of which are a given at Snowbombing, a festival that delivers all you’d want from a snow fest. He fills us in on the fun. the black runs and the white hot parties... 64 / RWDMAG.COM

Without question, Snowbombing Festival is the best reason to brace the cold. The 14 year-old event rolls two wild holidays into one, with the best in music and slopes on offer. According to tales from the reps, Snowbombing began as a holiday for a group of Mancunians, but slowly evolved into the week-long booze fest it is today, taking over an entire ski resort with thousands of revellers at nearly a dozen venues. The festival itself could easily stand-alone, that’s before you’re killing it down the slopes all day. With amazing performances and DJ sets

“THE FESTIVAL ITSELF COULD EASILY STANDALONE, THAT’S BEFORE YOU’RE KILLING IT DOWN THE SLOPES ALL DAY”

from Rudimental, Disclosure, MistaJam, Toddla T, Kasabian, P Money, Todd Edwards and EZ, the line-up had it all. The showstopper has to go out to Katy B and the Rinse team who dropped so many hits that the arena crowd exploded. Other memorable moments include Urban Nerds, Rompa’s Reggae Shack, Artwork, Skream and Breach. And we can’t talk about Snowbombing without mentioning the daily refuel via the legendary Hans The Butcher, either. Lifesaver, literally. Roll on Snowbombing 2014... #WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BOY FROM BOY IN DA CORNER, ROBBIE WILLIAMS... REALLY

DIZZEE RASCAL, WHAT HAPPENED? Money should chase art, art should never chase money, but ten years after Boy In Da Corner, still the greatest body of work ever produced by the British Urban Music scene [no question], that message seems to have been lost on Dizzee Rascal. Words Tego Sigel Image Jiro

A pioneer the likes of which we’ll probably never see again, Dizzee earned the right to chase radio play with Dream, he’d done enough for us to look the other way on Wanna Be, we cringed when he showed up with James Cordon on Shout For England but accepted that his heart was probably in the right place. Sh*t, as far as we’re concerned, Tongue N’ Cheek never happened. Unfortunately for Dizz, I’m a firm believer in the ‘Tipping Point’. Rather than ask the question, which is a legitimate one, about whether or not Dizzee Rascal has fallen off completely, I’d rather answer it. Dizzee’s new single Goin’ Crazy [featuring Robbie Williams] is one of the biggest set-backs British urban music has suffered since parliament intervened in the rise of So Solid way back in the early 2000s, and it’s our duty as fans to make sure its affects are not felt in the years to come.

tralising his aggression. He’s no longer the Boy In Da Corner, he’s not even Bonkers; he could be the new face of Morrisons. The decision to collaborate with the former Take That man was one made with such a pure and calculated cynicism as to render it less pop music than an act of pure politics. Don’t take his music seriously; just jiggle your way down the biscuit isle at ASDA as the inoffensive ditty takes hold. Art by committee and a committee of housewives, no less. It would be foolish to expect a Punk-style uprising against the selfcongratulatory and formulaic fluff pedalled in the name of youth culture in 2013. Not when artists, bands and even genres struggle to hold the attention of the mainstream long enough to reach that awkward second album [and even more awkward second remix]. But should we continue to allow and even encourage Dizzee Rascal to

“FAME HAS MANY MEASURES, BUT FEW CAN CLAIM… TO BE KNOWN TO THE QUEEN. IN TERMS OF RAP MUSIC, THAT LIST IS SHORTER STILL; EMINEM, JAY-Z AND OUR VERY OWN DIZZEE RASCAL.” You probably think I’m exaggerating, but for many it’s hard to imagine a Britain in which 50% of people claiming to be rappers did so in American accents, a Britain in which faceless indie bands jingle-jangled soulless, happy-clappy advert music to the adoring hordes of radio producers and T4 presenters that made-up the UK’s taste-making few. It wasn’t that long ago. It took a lot of people, a lot of credibility and a lot of brilliant art to force a change. Goin’ Crazy represents the ultimate complacency of our culture’s influence on the masses. Fame has many measures, few are exact, but there is elite party of performers who can claim, with legitimacy, to be known to the Queen, by name. In terms of rap music, that list is shorter still; we’re talking Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Eminem, Jay-Z and our very own Dizzee Rascal. So his decision to invite ITV prime time’s favourite son to feature on his new single can not be explained away as a method of elevating him to a new plateau of popularity. Instead, its design appears to be neu66 / RWDMAG.COM

gallivant around, with our blessing, pitching his lowest common denominator game-show garbage, we will instead be greeted with silence. The culture’s future endeavours will be greeted with the total and utter indifference it would seemingly deserve. As lazy and directionless as the song is, as contrived and cheesy as the video is and as depressingly inevitable as its position at the top of the national charts is; it’s the feeling of disillusion that comes with Goin’ Crazy that I can’t shake. Dizzee took the crown when nobody else could, he defended it against pretenders and was allowed to keep it as a mark of respect, but for the culture to move forward, it’s time for young Simba to step-up. The pride’s got no pride left. Our leader’s ways are dated and predictable. I’m sorry Mr Mills, but we needed Jay-Z and we ended up with LL Cool J. Tinie, you’re up... Boy In Da Corner is still out now
