editor’s letter
With the end of the season fast approaching will anyone catch up with Camach’? Meanwhile in the RWD Office Mini League, can Greg be caught? It’s all going off!!!
Thanks for arriving at the first of this year’s Style issues. For those that don’t know, they’re biannual - our last being Louis Smith in October - and if you weren’t already aware these pages are perfect for those looking to up their garment game. This time around we have the pleasure of featuring forward-thinking pop pioneers, AlunaGeorge. Both with their own unique look, when they’re not talking about #AttractingFlies both Aluna Francis and George Reid are producing radio-friendly hits. To find out their secret we sent someone who always keeps up with the latest looks, Deputy Editor Nardene Scott. Not only are we bringing over 37 pages of fashion, we’re also breaking down the brands, trends and clothing-related content to cop (or avoid). From monochrome and print on print to the equally eyecatching “Street Goth” it’s all here. At this point, I’d love to say that I’m the best dressed in the RWD office and never afraid to break away from the norm (although, I admit my, as Nardene calls it, “Ranger look” was a bit too far, but don’t watch that). If you are in the watching mood, I’m currently obsessed with Vine - which is full of both style and substance - so watch @DannyWalker1 and @RWDmag on there instead. @DannyWalker1
The above picture doesn’t do my Vine any justice, I magically swap shirts and everything.

Poetry is a vital language. It captures the urgency of a moment in the life of the writer and expresses that moment in a way that draws on the senses of the reader. What are your views on it? Robyn G We’re going to stay polite and simply say, it’s a’ight! How can I get a feature in ur mag? letter of the month: Hey RWD, What is going on with the state of TV at the moment, I watched #Youngers that was alright, Eastenders is getting dry, when is Top Boy coming back? I remember you did an article on it way before it was even out, what’s next! Sergio D 14 / rwdmag.com
Thanks Sergio, that’s a lot of pressure mate, who do you think we are, the TV Guide? Even though we do know what’s going on up to a year before other titles (Youngers, Top Boy, Mo Ali’s forthcoming Montana) we’ll have to get back to you on this one.
“Met Charlie Sloth at work and he signed this #1Xtra #CharlieSloth #FireintheBooth #JD #RWDmag #RWD” Lookitsteejay Hold onto that magazine, it will be worth a lot of money one day. Seriously, our signed copy of a Shystie cover from 2004 went for a couple of million the other day.

RWD’s Online Editor Tego Sigel is back to fill us in on the web...
Kim Kardashian represents the Internet’s greatest success story. If r Drake wasn’t talking Fo N A C S deo about Kim when vi age he wrote Started foot From The Bottom, then we really didn’t get that song. From a multi-millionaire heiress roaming celebrity parties as Paris Hilton’s bag-carrier, to a reality TV star in her own right and marrying psychologically battered Amber Rose rebound guy Kanye West in a matter of years. Dreams do come true. If Kim represents the Internet at its best, then her breakout production’s co-star Ray J is the web at its worst. The alleged R&B singer has gone from playing D-Money in Moesha, to Brandy’s annoying little brother who is never likely to escape their era defining sex tape. Ray J’s only gone and embraced his video fame and dedicated his new single I Hit It First (featuring Brackins, no less) to his former beau, in a move so net friendly that Twitter was abuzz with lyrics, artwork and alleged responses before anybody heard a note. Andy Warhol once proffered that, everyone will get their “15 minutes”, Ray J’s just spacing his across the remainder of his years; taking five minutes a decade, thank you very much.
James Franco is an official RWD hero, making the most random film choices, working as a lecturer and shouting at cinema goers about fried pickles, “Look at this sh*t!” The video he shot for Alamo Drafthouse theatres is pure, unabridged Franco. 16 / rwdmag.com
Arséne Benga

It’s been a crazy month; I did eight out of 11 Bank Holiday Weekend shows. Also, I’ve been nominated for TWO Sony Awards, not one... no, Sloth don’t do things in half, two awards! They’re the equivalent of the BAFTAs for radio. You can’t get any higher in terms of achievement, so this is a madness. Musically it’s been a mad mad month; G Range [G FrSH] has just dropped Legoman Part II, which is probably one of the craziest mixtapes for a hot hot minute. Another massive thing this month is the first ever Fire In The Booth Unplugged with Mic Righteous and Big Narstie at the iconic Maida Vale Studios. I have to say they absolutely excelled, go and have a little butchers at those online. Pro Green got engaged this month and I’m a little bit worried. I mean, he’s gonna be all grown up; is he ever gonna make music again? I am really a little bit worried, Pro Green, please make more music. And lastly my Fashion Killeeeer: Sorry G FrSH it’s all about you this month. I clocked G FrSH rocking leather trousers, he was trying to tell me they were tracksuit bottoms; they were too tight to be tracksuit bottoms! The last time I saw leather trousers, I was in the wrong bar in Amsterdam. Big up G FrSH though, he kinda pulled them off. Woooahaooo, G FrSH leather trousers, whoa! For more follow @CharlieSloth

We’ve been messing with Twitter’s new baby for a while now, enough to say, ‘Hey, bloody add us on Vine, we’ve got some cool ish going on.’ Sure it’s ANOTHER social network, to add to the existing millions, but this one seems to be one of the most creative. Instead of spending hours deciding on the perfect YouTube edit, or the best Instagram filter, Vine is more instant/spontaneous/ random, only allowing you to upload (up to) SIX seconds of footage. Renault’s latest Clio model. We expressed just how much we loved the new form of Renault’s entry level hatchback last year, and we have to admit, the boy racer inside us absolutely loves the stretched-out body kit, unnecessarily large alloys and futuristic dual exhausts that feature so prominently on the newly released RenaultSport 200 Turbo edition. If you’ve got a couple of grand saved up, and fancy getting on the hot hatch hype, you won’t find a car out there that can match the performance of this model. At least not for under £20k anyway. Dress To Impress Master class Mike Fetters, Graduate Director at totaljobs.com shares a few secrets on how to work your way up the ladder...
What should you wear to an important job interview? If you’re in any doubt of what you should wear to a job interview, dress smart. Make time before your interview to choose your outfit. Read the job ad and see what it involves. For conservative companies, go with a well-fitting business suit in blue, black or grey; paired with a non-garish, well-ironed shirt and a simple tie. Even for creative roles, you don’t want to be too casual. A suit might be too formal but never wear jeans. So find the comfortable middle ground. On a scale of 1-10 how important is your attire? 8. Whilst your clothes won’t be the deal breaker, if you can present the right image you’ll certainly be giving yourself a head start. Any interview tips or no nos? Punctuality is essential when winning over potential employers. The key to this is planning your journey well in advance, especially if it’s in an area you’re not familiar with. If you can, print a map off or make sure your phone is fully charged and the maps are enabled. With regards to top fashion no nos, guys should avoid wearing badly fitting clothing and girls should give accessories that are garish, chunky or dangly a miss [Ed: We hope Bianca Jackson from Eastenders is taking this in]. To take a crack at climbing one rung higher, check totaljobs.com

Enough Already: Girls Grabbing Our Gear Why do sisters/girlfriends/links (in some parts of Norfolk these are often the same person) think they can get away with absconding with our attire? Seriously, if you’ve ever had a hoodie hijacked join Danny Walker in protest... Illustration Art Jazz
Picture the scene; it’s Saturday night, you’re on a promise and then the evening ends with you promising something completely different... Like access to half your wardrobe? These female thread thieves think they’re so smart too; batting eyelashes, wearing next to nothing in the first place and then eventually showing us exactly what we want to see (Match of the Day, if she shuffles to the left a bit). And then, just as you get ready to hit the lights and substitute Alan Hansen for something a little less defensively-minded, she drops a classic. ‘It’s gettin’ late. Can you call me a cab/drop me home? Oh, and can I borrow this jumper?’ The cheek. You waited six hours (even sitting through a chick flick with Sandra Bullock), only for some preSunday par bars!?!?! The clothing con can happen at anytime though, don’t think those post-Match of the Day movements are reserved for 28 / rwdmag.com

If you check out these guy’s wardrobes (the floor) right

It’s not as if we can steal your clothing. We could try, but not everyone is cut out for nine inch wedges, dip-dye jeggings, and a crop top. Sorry Alex Reid, but it just doesn’t work that way around. #New Chelsea Kit, “Funny” David Luiz, Initiation Songs
30 / rwdmag.com
Upfront With... Oscar After signing from Internacional last summer, 21 year-old Oscar is coming towards the end of his first season in the Premier League. Undeterred by a limited grasp of the English language, Chelsea’s Brazil international is in top form. The attacking midfielder talks to RWD (via a translator) about his teammates, an awkward initiation, and being covered in blue paint for the club’s impending kit launch. Words Danny Walker Editorial Assistance Ben Rebuck
“[Being covered in blue paint] was cool and fun but it was really cold [laughs].”
It’s the day after Chelsea’s Petr Cech-enabled, 1-0 victory over United in the FA Cup quarter-final replay and it’s business as usual at The Blue’s plush training ground in Cobham. The Champions of Europe flag flies at full mast, a myriad of must-own motor vehicles fills the car park and Oscar has just finished an English lesson... You just finished your English lessons, how are they going? [Oscar looks to translator] They’re going well [everyone laughs... clearly not that well]. I understand a lot but can’t speak much. Tell us about your arrival at Chelsea. What did you know about the club? They’re always in the big finals and getting high in the league; I knew about Drogba, Lampard, Deco, Alex, Beletti [even though translator calls him Balotelli], so I knew a lot. I support Arsenal and he [points to Ben] supports Chelsea... [Oscar gives thumbs up to Ben and ignores me] good... [room laughs]. It’s OK, I’ll let that slide as you’re a good footballer... Thanks [laughs]. Who welcomed you into the team [I do an arm around shoulder movement then laugh] I dunno why I’m doing that? Which players help you? Players like David Luiz and Ramires welcomed me and Lucas Piazon too, all the Brazilians. What was that motion? [I point to hand clasping motion Oscar does]... [Laughs] It means they helped me up the wall. I don’t know why I did that?! Who are the biggest jokers in the team and what was your initiation? Loads of them are funny but David [Luiz] is the funniest... In every club there are initiations... Translator: He doesn’t want to say what it is but I know what it is [laughs] he had to sing a song, the Brazilian song [after heavy research we find it, Ai Se Eu Te Pego], it was big everywhere, except London [laughs]. Tell us something we don’t know about David Luiz? Can you dish some dirt? Let me think, I’ve got a lot [smiles]. I think everyone knows him on the pitch and what he’s like... [Translator interrupts] I told him that you want more gossip. [Laughs] Luiz is an excellent and funny person but he’s my friend and I can’t say [room laughs].
Chelsea have famous midfielders; what are your views on Hazard, Lampard and Mata? They are all great players, very talented, but Chelsea as a whole are a great team and we’re all getting to know each other. I think once we’ve all been here a while, I think there will be great things to come. Ben: You seem to play almost telepathically with Hazard and Mata, have they helped you settle in? It’s definitely helped me, and the other two. There will only be better things to come as we grow together on and off the pitch. So far, it’s been a great season. I’m playing my first season in Europe for one of the best clubs in Europe... Kind of... [Laughs] I hope I can carry on playing as many games as I can and be up for more titles and championships. Let’s talk about the ‘It’s Blue, What Else Matters’ photo shoot for Chelsea’s new kit, was it fun? [Points to pictures of Oscar drenched in blue paint]... It was cool but it was really cold [laughs] but it was really fun. This means a lot to Chelsea fans, like Ben here is going to have these pictures on his wall; can you feel the passion of the blue and the fans? Yeah, it was good to show the fans that we’re together as one. And you look a bit scary like ‘grr’... [Laughs] They made me do it... ...Yeah you seem friendly, not ‘grrr’ [Laughs] no, I’m not nasty. In terms of style, you seem to be very stylish, how do you like to dress? [Laughs] yeah I’m really stylish but today you caught me dressed normal, usually I’m a fashionista. Who’s the worst dressed at Chelsea? There’s a lot... [laughs]. But I can’t say any names sorry [laughs]. Lastly, please teach me Portuguese... Depends what? Good stuff I can say in front of my mum... Eu te amo mãe... [I attempt about six times] Eu... Eu... E... Eu... Eu... Eu te amo mãe... Eu... Eu te amo mãe [Translation: I love you Mum]. Oscar is taking part in the “It’s Blue what else matters” campaign to launch Chelsea’s home kit for 2013/14. For more check adidas.com or @adidasUK

WIN!!
George FitzGerald As always RWD alongside Duck and Cover are all up on which acts are #readyforanything and this month it’s time to introduce George FitzGerald. Going through all the familiar channels into production, GFG is no longer bubbling underground so Nardene Scott puts a call in to talk hangovers, steamy songs and just how horrific David Guetta truly is. ”I didn’t seem to chat to any Americans, everywhere you went there was some UK DJ,” the London-bred Berlin-residing DJ/producer laughs about his experience out in Miami at Ultra festival which he’s still slightly wounded from. It’s just the start of the festival season with Snowbombing, Sonar, Movement and more following, so we can only hope the qualified interpreters hangover cure is foolproof, “two blue Powerade’s, a Berocca and then if you can, find a double sausage and egg muffin. That’s the dream scenario.” But let’s get back to the music. With the 2012 released, addictive as ever, Child, which led to the recent shuffle ready Thinking Of You and a stupidly good essential mix, it’s clear there’s no stopping the former Black Market Records employee. “It would have been easier releasing things like Child but I think that it would have been a bit cynical and boring for me, so I’m always moving things forward,” George points out. Since we are talking style this issue, @georgeftizmusic promises the worst thing that’s graced his body has
“[David] Guetta is just like a horror show...he just looks like a c**k the entire time.” been tie dye Moschino and GAP hoodies during the 90s but what we really wanted is for him to call out another artist, “[David] Guetta is just like a horror show. You look at what he’s wearing and his highlights. He just looks like a c**k the entire time.” We kind of agree with him there but back to someone worth the column inches. Despite talking about his album far too much recently (that won’t be with you until 2014) so, instead look forward to a couple of quality EPs and remixes - “I don’t want to be one of those guys who are out there doing ten remixes and five of them are sh*t. I turn down a lot you get silly requests from major labels.” We’ll end with GFG humouring himself with his own take on his music in one word; “Steamy! When my tracks sound good to me, they sound like a steam engine.” Thinking Of You EP is out now
Classic Material This being our style issue, RWD and street smart brand Duck and Cover partner up again to showcase the hottest emerging talent through the #readyforanything campaign. George Fitzgerald, Flume and Barely Legal are all definitely ushering in a whole new style of their own in the music scene. We’re sure they have some future classics in the making as does our cover star George; Duck and Cover are giving you the opportunity to win his knitted sweat Keller (p68), available in blue, black, off white, grey and almond it’s a wardrobe winner. Flume “I guess it’s like experimental electronica with strong hip hop elements and catchy melodies,” Harley Stretan tells us in his husky Sydney tone. Coming to the end of his US tour and only just 18 months into launching his beats on the world - he kicked 1D off the top spot back home Flume began experimenting at just 13 via a music production programme found in a cereal box. Discovering his unique sound, Flume Step accidentally, 2012 EP Sleepless kicked everything off, followed up by the funky Holding On, attracting the likes of Jessie Ware. “It’s kind of really early right now but I’d love to do something with Jessie in the near future and Oliver from the XX or Yukimi from Little Dragon,” the Future Classic artist admits. Look out for the elaborate light/live show coming to the UK in July - “it’s really cool but kind of tricky to explain” - along with visuals for every track off of his self titled album. Learn more about the laid back dude @Flumemusic 32 / rwdmag.com
Barely Legal You really should know about London-based DJ Barely Legal by now, especially if you’re a BBC Radio 1Xtra listener, as she’s regularly taking over MistaJam’s daily dose with her garage and grime-ridden mixes. “My favourite moment has to be having the Godfather of Grime, Wiley, host one of my mixes, alongside legends Scratchy, Riko Dan and God’s Gift!” Add to that, sets out in Croatia at Outlook Festival and sharing main room duties at Fabric alongside David Rodigan there’s only Japan, NYC and LA to tick off her wish list. Currently juggling DJing and uni, recently quitting her part time job because it was all too much and just over 18 months into the game coming up via an impulse buy of an entire DJ set up, “I was pretty screwed when it came to paying the rent!” the next 18 months will see the huge Wiley supporter unleashing her own productions as well as bookings in and around Europe. #Stank TOUR BUS, FACETY LYRICS, tWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
Ella Eyre By now you’ve already been introduced to the raspy and intense tones of Ella Eyre via the radio-rinsed (and rightly so) Rudimental track Waiting All Night, so it’s only right we meet the self-professed attitude gyal to find out how she went from being in Bugsy Malone to travelling the world on stank dude-infested tour buses... not that that’s a bad thing. Words Nardene Scott
34 / rwdmag.com
After trekking up a ridiculously high stairwell at Shepherds Bush Empire and walking past headliners Bastille’s area, we entered the dressing room of the 19 year-old with the mighty blonde mane and voice to match, Ella Eyre. It’s only a couple of days since the cynical globophobe got back from the Rudimental US tour, taking in SXSW along the way and preceded by festival dates in Australia, so there’s a slight time warp happening but she still manages to squeeze out a smile ahead of her soundcheck for yet another gig. “They’re all quite east London like, ‘innit yeah’, ‘differently’, ‘still though’, and when I’m with them, I end up talking like that,” the wedge trainer obsessed singer tells us before breaking down how it feels to be on the (now hopefully fumigated) tour bus, “because I’m the youngest and the girl, they wind me up but then you give them sh*t back and like they can’t take as much as you.” From choirs to girl bands (“I was a drummer, not a very good one”) to playing Tallulah in a school rendition of Bugsy Malone and eventually entering the one stop star shop that is BRIT school (sharing the year with Disturbing London’s Sasha Keable), all roads were to lead deep into musical theatre but lucky for our little ears, that wasn’t the case. “I thought that side of musical theatre didn’t allow me to be creative enough and fortunately fell into the path of my managers and it went from there really.” Last year Virgin scooped up the unapologetically loud teen who despite having her album pretty much sewn up already still linked up with incredible musicians to help explore all musical avenues; Raphael Saadiq, Ishi, Claude Kelly and Fraser T Smith are just a few of the people Ella shared sessions with stopping herself from Googling them beforehand. There seems to be a bit of a theme for the west London chick about squeezing onto more tracks than planned. Originally, in the studio Bastille (the band Ella is supporting after our interview) pictured the singer on Free but the session also resulted in No Angels, the six figure Soundcloud post reworking of the TLC classic, No Scrubs. “That was all quite random and really fast, just put together but it’s a wicked song like from the off as soon as we heard it,” the outspoken teen tells us of Waiting All Night, another ‘just take a listen to this,’ moment which bounced to
“If I’m in a bad mood, I’ll f**king say it…I guess a lot of the stuff I write about is direct and quite facety and I swear quite a lot, so they’ll definitely be a few, ‘Oh is that about me?’ moments,” the top of the charts very nicely - if you haven’t already Google the live lounge rendition, because she goes in. As for the future, considering what we managed to get a sneaky listen of, you lot will be impressed, she may even tackle the drum sticks again. “It’s one of those instruments that you can really let loose and I like to do that with my music too, like if I’m in a bad mood, I’ll f**king say it!” The monochrome lover (“I generally have this thing down black and white, direct, dynamic like my music”) laughs before considering who she’ll upset soon with the new tunes. “Well I guess a lot of the stuff I write about is direct and quite facety and I swear quite a lot, so they’ll definitely be a few, ‘Oh is that about me?’ moments.” This doesn’t faze her and it kind of intrigues us because we’re tired of hearing some frightened, loved up or heart broke chick, we could do with a little rudeness on the scene. Look out for lead single Young Forever taken from the forthcoming @thisisella EP, The Lion, The B*tch & The Wardrobe

British streetwear has never been so popular but with each success story there’s at least ten tales of failure. RWD speak to eight brands to breakdown how to make it in the business. Words Danny Walker Illustration Lucas Jubb
Once you know what you want to do, make sure you have a solid team behind you. Remember they all need to hold their own too, deadweight will ultimately cost you sales. As Victate say, it’s “hard to put a number” on those who contribute along the way.

That all important word: PROFIT. “Any business wants to make at least a 50% margin,” reveal King. “So if a tee costs £5.50, you need to be selling that at £11.00 to cover costs of production, all overheads, selling, marketing, etc. The store will generally mark up x2.5 so they will put it out for about £27-28.” Play.Dot add: “Our profit margins now incorporate the 2.5% markup.”

We all know that girls be stealing guys clothes (see Enough Already) but how are streetwear brands catering for the fairer sex? “We’re mainly men’s,” say Play.Dot and most of the other brands we spoke to, “but that is soon to be rectified as we have recently taken on a womenswear manager, so watch this space.”
It all starts somewhere and if you want your clothing to be on shelves take heed of Benjart’s words: “We began by chance; I was making clothing for myself, people liked what I was wearing and there was a significant demand for it. That was in 2009 but I was selling t-shirts out the boot of my car a year before then. You’ve got to do what it takes to get your brand going.”

The “Street Goth” look is inspired by a dark gothic aesthetic. Sporting mainly a monochromatic colour palette consisting of a mixture of streetwear and luxury brands, premium pieces such as leather garments are integral and common styling for them. An example of this is wearing Black Scale and SSUR hats with Alexander Wang pieces. The look is very raw and a mix and match of textures and materials brings it to life.
The “Street Goth” is a continuation and evolution of that high end fashion savvy street aesthetic. It is most definitely in my opinion the product of young kids looking at the “Goth Ninja” trend on the runways by brands and designers such as Rick Owens and COMME des GARÇONS and attempting to pull it off and still wear their favourite streetwear brands. We put together a few pieces from streetwear pioneers of the look such as

Amsterdam based fashion brand Scotch & Soda have a few interesting pieces using this unique all over floral print; particularly the chino shorts and lightweight nylon jacket. Only the Dutch can make floral look this fierce. scotch-soda.com
Established in New England, Penfield is a workwear brand designed to withstand the climate of the region. Quality is never questionable when it comes to this brand that sits in-between the sometimes indifferent worlds of style and functionality. So this 100% cotton floral print sweat is a very typical product of Penfield’s marriage of workwear and fashion. urbanoutfitters.co.uk
PRPS are a New York based luxury denim brand and are known for the authenticity and functionality of their products. Pepe Jeans have recently collaborated with the Andy Warhol Foundation and produced a range of clothing using the legendary pop artist’s work on their clothing. This eye catching ensemble being one of them, featuring Warhol’s famous Banana incorporated into a print that also features an abstract floral pattern throughout. The use of pop art in menswear has always existed and this collaboration is the real deal and not a rip off like what usually happens. The small details like using Warhol’s dollar sign piece as a zip makes it even fresher. pepejeans.com
It is safe to say that Carhartt have more heritage than most workwear brands and have had a lot of experience making camouflage pieces. Despite camouflage being widespread as of recent, this type of shirt and short combo of contrasting camouflage patterns is not new to the brand. Carhartt transcend trends and make durable clothes to last for longer than a season. Their design team have reworked these pieces to give them a more contemporary fit and softer feel. surfdome.com

Electronic music really doesn’t get any more suggestive or straight up sexier than that of AlunaGeorge, hell the songs are sexed up before you even press play, Just A Touch, You Know You Like It and the debut album title, Body Music pretty much throws it out there, ‘Our bodies making music baby, I wanna do it again’. Whilst the confidently delicate vocals of Aluna Francis tickle and tease, the refined yet spacey and skittish beats of George Reid align perfectly to create some pretty addictive music. No wonder 2013 began with the Island Records signed duo being recognised by the BRITs with a Critics Choice nomination, narrowly missing out on topping the BBC Sound poll and being the most blogged about act of 2012, oh and claiming the second spot with Disclosure collaboration White Noise didn’t hurt either. Keen to set their own trends and curiously managing to court the underground and pop scenes simultaneously, they were an obvious choice for our style cover and as you can see, did not disappoint. Despite Justin Timberlake being the only person willing to kickstart MySpace’s dwindling heartbeat there are a few things we can thank them for, like when tallgeorgemyspace hit up the Aluna featuring pop band, My Toys Like Me because how else would the Londoners (who prefer to remain ageless) have hooked up in the first place. To be fair it was only 2009 so the social media haven still had (ricket-ridden) legs. “I’d be trying to do some production, still I might not have been so fortunate,” George muses of the what if... question, admitting with no education it’d probably be manual labour whilst Aluna is all about random nonsensical business, “I’d be running a few really bad businesses, maybe like chocolate covered frogs or something.” So thanks MySpace not sure anybody is ready to stomach that sort of delicacy, unless 78 / rwdmag.com

it’s wrapped in purple foil and called Freddo. Let’s just be glad that since that e-meeting the pair are like peas in a pod, in an interview with the Evening Standard last year, their partners were even said to be a little jealous of the time they’d spend creating music in George’s bedroom - not like that - and throughout the photo shoot, it’s clear the pair are comfortable with each other but more like best friends, as oppose to friends with benefits. Both statuesque figures, the fashion crowd were all over the pair once they shot onto the scene. As the Aaliyah fan sits across from RWD with dramatic makeup and a bold yellow coat, Mr. Reid is a little dmore subdued as he assesses his style, “I am wearing a pink and purple shirt today but I try to not do too much, like I’m 6ft 4 as it is, I don’t need too many things to stand out.” We’ll leave the headbands (“it was like a tie from a dress, not one of my own”) that’s your words George, which made you and stopped you looking like a prat at the same time, in the past then. There is one thing they do agree on though and that’s the music, bloggers went nuts when the band dropped the R&B-soaked, glitchy, subdued bass of You Know You Like It on the internet - the sharing nature of the web has arguably been the major driving force behind their success. The accompanying video, shot in just four hours saw Francis get her groove on and that visual led to more conceptual videos like the genius Your Drums Your Love and the newest creation courtesy of director Emil Nava, [Rita Ora, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J] Attracting Flies. “He had to be a kind of taskmaster like ‘Go go go go!!! Let’s go! Let’s do this!’” the ethereal half Jamaican, half Indian singer tells us of the arctic weathered shoot which saw the other half of the band laughing at the side for hours, a situation he kind of prefers. The creative freedom (Island pretty much leaving them to their own devices musically) has seen AlunaGeorge concoct EP’s with remixes worthy of an A&R role at any label; Bondax, Duke Dumont, Baauer, HudMo, Brenmar, being a few called in to add their personal touches. “As a producer from my end of it, I’m always forever listening to other people making music and getting envious of what they’re able to do but it’s great to borrow their

Bump N Grind Body Music isn’t here just yet but it’s set to deliver some jams for the bedroom as Aluna breaks down for us... Aluna: The getting ready one, You Know You Like It and what’s the crying in your bedroom with your teddy bear under your duvet... George: ...When we were writing it, we were really really sad, Aluna was gonna make me cry by the end of the day. Aluna: And sexy time... George: ...Could be Body Music or Friends To Lovers. Aluna: Friends to Lovers is when you’ve got your friend round and you’re trying to tell them that you want to take it further but you can’t actually say that, so just press play on that one. I hope that that’s going to get people together all over the country [laughs].

talent for a remix, we’ve been really lucky, like whether we have half decent tastes, I dunno,” the Neptunes fan considers, downplaying their ability to tap into the most current sounds without watering down their own. The chart storming Disclosure collaboration White Noise also came together without a second thought after AlunaGeorge opened up for the brothers, “it was quite an interesting balancing act... they played a few different bits of music and we just went for something that just stood out and already had that kind of centre to it which we could lock into and move forward with and it was actually quite like easy, I hate to say that.” Normally focusing on her own experiences White Noise is more a reflection of the singer/ songwriter’s mood that day, off the back of a friend complaining about a loser lover. “In my head I was like you
can’t listen to this guy, he’s lying to you, he’s rubbish but I thought that would just make her run straight into his arms, so I was like um, hum, yep, and then wrote this song later.” Radio reloads – which range from Rinse to 6 Music - are cool and favourable reviews but you’ll be surprised about the moments that they really care about. George simply hearing his production make one of its many rotations on the airwaves and Aluna’s gran finally realising she wasn’t ‘pretending’ to do music. And with all of the facts, quotes, videos, shows leading them to become the most blogged artists of 2012, you’d think there has to be some crazy stuff out there, but then again “someone described me as a lamp post...but lamp posts light up your life, so don’t knock it,” Aluna laughs. Attracting Flies is out now and look out for Body Music dropping 1 July
#california LOVE, labrinth’s Brother, BRITAIN’s GOT TALENT
Charlie Meets MCKNASTY
He’s toured with Tinie, Lady Gaga and his brother Labrinth, and is about to take TV by storm with an appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. This month, as part of our K-Swiss ‘California Love’ campaign, Charlie Sloth meets Joshua McKenzie, AKA drummer, DJ and singer MckNasty to talk about Meagan Good, West Coast classics and revolutionising the art of drumming... Image Adrian Nettleship
Charlie Sloth: You come from a mad talented family. Talk us through your NINE brothers and sisters. Everyone in my family is very musical, including my mum and dad. Seven of us are involved professionally in the music game right now. There’s Jamie who’s a producer; Steve, he plays bass with Wretch; you got Sherelle, she’s her own artist who has also sung with Wretch. Rachel, she’s sung with McFly and done backing vocals for lots of people. Then the youngest one, Jessica, we’re yet to see what she will deliver but I think she’ll be incredible with music. Then there’s the wild dude, young Lab. Everyone knows about him. He’s doing very well at the moment. You started playing drums at a young 82 / rwdmag.com
age. What was it about them? I was three when I first met the drums and fell in love. I loved that they were loud and boisterous, you could just whack them and make sounds and also make everyone happy, from what I saw. At about maybe 10 or 11, I started to go away with school in the jazz and steel band groups and started to play around the country. Then I got a bit older and started to play at clubs like 10 Rooms in London. I got to like 15 years-old and got an audition to play with Daniel Bedingfield. I got the gig over loads of much more experienced drummers and I went on tour with him as soon as I left school. I’ve also played with Natasha Bedingfield, Lily Allen, Plan B, Duffy, Wretch, Devlin, Katy B, Lady Gaga, to
name a few, and then I became Musical Director for Tinie. That was the first time I got to be in charge of making the show happen from a musical point of view. It was really fun, a great opportunity. Being with an artist who was the same age as me, listening to the same music and partying... it was truly great, really fun times. How did the standing up and drumming thing come about? I went away to Europe for two years on tour and when I came back home, all of the young drummers were sounding very different. Drumming had evolved. It kind of freaked me out a bit. I thought ’I need to stand up and change the whole vibe’. It means I have to change my whole posture and how I play.
“The whole LA sound is very musical and ‘life’ sounding. They’re really into their synthesisers too, which is interesting in terms of what we do in the UK.”
I just got back from LA; it’s so sick... [Laughs] Woooo LA! I’ve been a few times, most recently with Tinie. It was just incredible. I remember landing and we were all very tired but the adrenaline was so crazy, no one wanted to sleep. We got some Grey Goose at the hotel, started vibing and then this woman jumps on my waist [re-enacts a drunken shocked face]. We go outside and the guys are like ‘Do you know who that was? You need to understand. That was Meagan Good!’ [Laughs]. She was like ‘Are you guys coming to hang out?’ On an everyday basis with Tinie, something dramatic would happen. How has the West Coast inspired you? The whole LA sound, in terms of producers like Dr Dre for instance, is
very musical and ‘life’ sounding. It felt organic and not robotic; it’s all massive hooks and real singing. They’re really into their synthesisers too, like old skool stuff, which is interesting in terms of what we do in the UK. What does 2013 have in store? I want to try and evoke some melodic vibe to drumming that’s distinctly mine. I’m taking my music to the stage, whether that’s Britain’s Got Talent or the major festivals. When it comes to the MckNasty experience, come in your trainers and not in your heels! globe shocking Last issue we picked out a couple of homegrown festivals but for a few extra quid we thought why not jump on your budget airline of choice to your equally budget hotel and live it up across Europe. At least that way you’re guaranteed a little sun, sea and unfortunately we’re afraid we can’t do anything about the last thing but we can tell you where to go and try your luck. We didn’t want to leave out the people without passports (or just the broke ones), so we have your back with a few UK based festivities too. Words Nardene Scott
The Only Way Is Essex Person Brand new ish! Former WWI airfield Damyns -Hall Aerodome is -now host to one -day homegrown -music fest, -WeAreFSTVL on 25 May in Upminster, Essex. -Don’t let those -Ikea meatballs put you off visiting - Sweden. Festivals aren’t all about fields in the middle of nowhere. For the more sophisticated traveller, Gothenburg’ Way Out West offering, is the go to for fresh music. It appears Kendrick has a busy summer ahead of him, occupying yet another stage plus there’s Bey’s sister (I bet she hates that) Solange, James Blake, Azealia ‘Marmite’ Banks and the brothers that can do no wrong; Disclosure. The vibes don’t stop when the sun goes down either with after parties dotted around the Swedish capital. See wayoutwest. se/en and we’ll be there 8-10 August
-You’ll probably never find another reason to visit Finland. Focusing on not just music but as they put it ‘the arts’, Flow Festival happening on 7-11 August is a decade deep and although the thought of a weekend on an expower plant in Helsinki doesn’t sound too appealing, the line up does... HudMo, Mykki Blanco, Maya Jane Coles, AlunaGeorge, they’ve even got Reggae Sundays, so you know we’re involved. Keep an eye on flowfestival.com for the ever-growing line up.

Get Your Head Down Think about it, how long are you actually going to sleep for, if at all? So don’t go crazy on your accommodation and save your money for Jagermeister. There’s a festival each and every week in the UK, so plan your stay right now. Lenny Henry isn’t going to persuade you to stay at Premier Inn, but their £49 and under room promise surely will or budget hotel staple, Travelodge are offering rooms for £25 or less, just think of it as a place to sh*t, shower and shave. Foreign accommodation isn’t as easy to source, but each festival should point you in the right direction of respected or trusted accommodation providers, or you could always camp out in the sunshine.
On Board Person Unless you want - be stuck on to a- stank coach for hours on end or - be paying out - of your... we - suggest you get your travel booked stat! Fly Away If you’re heading to Croatia for Hideout or Outlook, easyJet fly to three major cities starting at £100.99, it’s not exactly busting the bank but get in there early just in case the prices do take a hike. Ryanair is the best bet to make it over to Ireland for Radio 1’s Big Weekend leaving from London, Birmingham and Liverpool, one way flights to Derry start at £14.99. Bloody bargain! Make Tracks If you haven’t already, grab yourself an annual 16-25 railcard then get over to Trainline and book train tickets in advance. You could go all the way up north and vice versa for less than a healthy visit to Nando’s with London Kings Cross to Leeds on offer for just £16. If you’re desperate (and can stomach a coach full of grannies and sweaty sandwiches) National Express are dragging people up and down the country continuously from just £5 but there is a huge penalty of your sanity for that really ridiculously cheap price.
#RAP, MJC, ROCK BOTTOM
STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM
After a difficult upbringing hip hop/ rap artist Cristian MJC has finally found his feet, his latest track Rock Bottom explains how he’s overcome so much...
“I felt it was important to put something out which had real credibility in terms of depth in lyrical content, but also had a heavy beat.” Hey Cristian, I hope all is well, what have you been up to this week? All is good, I’ve literally just been preparing for my A levels; there’s a lot of pressure on me right now trying to balance music and school! How is your new video, Rock Bottom, being received? Pretty good man, better than I expected! People seem to have taken to it well, especially guys. I felt it was important to put something out which had real credibility in terms of depth in lyrical content, but also had a heavy beat. Was it conceived when you were in a dark place? Writing this song just felt so natural, I just put myself in that mind frame that has become so familiar over the years, and then it just came about you know. I ended up writing it three times over. I guess I’m a perfectionist; I don’t release something that I feel isn’t on point, and I will spend as long as it takes getting it to a level. You’ve had a very very hard upbringing what was the lowest moment and why did you choose music to help you
through it? I guess with my mum never being around, seeing how upset, stressed out and exhausted she was, the way meningitis affected my dad, it was kinda painful not having anyone I was close to, I guess I was just lonely. People picked on me, how my deafness, scarring and my skin created so many problems was mad looking back at it, ending up at five schools. I just felt that music was a way of getting away from the reality you were living, freeing your mind. Rap just gives you this freedom. We’ve noticed you’re very spiritual, how does it help you focus? It gives me hope. I think finding something to believe in in life is very important, otherwise when you’re hitting 80, life’s gonna be getting pretty miserable [laughs]. By following God, I believe anything is possible. Along with hard work, persistence, and believing in yourself, achieving just becomes routine. What’s been your biggest achievement since you first picked up that mic? When I received my first bit of fan mail in the post [laughs]! That was pretty
crazy. I got all these letters posted up on my wall. Just keeps that drive there, staying very positive, every day is a good day. Tell us about your next project? I’ve already put out a six track EP called I Make This which I wrote/produced myself. I think it was important I did this, as if you wanna be labelled as an ‘artist’, you need to be able to create a masterpiece from a blank canvas. This is what most musicians lack nowadays; in my eyes they’re just ‘rappers’ and ‘singers’. But in terms of the next step of discography, me and my bro Darren Martyn have spent a lot of time in the lab cooking up some mad material for the album. I’m also developing a movement called ‘FRSM’ (Forever Recording, Straight Money), which goes by the whole ‘working hard gets results’ motto. I’m hoping to build a brand around it as well, get clothing, merchandise out, and even develop a label. But right now I’m focussed solely on the music! films It doesn’t matter what you look like as the cinema is pitch black anyway...
Iron Man 3 Disney Cert. 15 It’s unfair that Iron Man 3 is the first Marvel film to be released since last summer’s mega-hit, The Avengers. But if anyone can pull off ushering in ‘Phase Two’ of the company’s next wave of movies (which will eventually include Avengers 2), it’s Robert Downey Jr. and co. With Jon Favreau out of the director’s chair for the third outing it’s up to Lethal Weapon series writer, Shane Black, to take the reins. You’ll be pleased to know that he hardly puts a foot wrong and the script is equally quirky and smart. However, we all know that THE REAL star of the show is RDJ himself and once again he shines as the billion-dollar genius in the suit of armour. We credit this to his excellent charisma and delivery. Iron Man 3 is also helped by always in-form, Sir Ben Kingsley who’s role as Stark’s main villain, The Mandarin, is uniquely engaging and downright surprising. I can easily say its third time’s a charm as this is the best out of the series and the perfect starting point for the next batch of films. [JG] 92 / rwdmag.com
Music With so much music trying its best to make it onto your music player this month, it’s best to steer clear of the crap...
21 and Over eOne/Momentum Pictures Cert. 15 Following very closely in the footsteps of party films Superbad and Project X – the cast is even stolen from the latter, in lead Miles Keller – 21 and Over is the victim of its own hype. Billed for a while as the next big thing, original jokes are few and far between, in Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s (the Hangover writers) college caper. It’s a real shame as it could have been great.
Preview: Hummingbird Lionsgate Films Cert. 15 Finally Jason Statham plays a character who uses his mind just as well as his fists in this Steven Knight (Eastern Promise) written/ directed all-action thriller. The trailer doesn’t give away too much – apart from the terrible hair job that turns him from homeless bum to a slick take-no-sh*t crime conqueror. Despite the faulty wig/beard setup this looks like it’s Statham back at his best (you decide when that was). You decide?

Not that we thought this LP would let us down but we were impressed with this debut. We had a sneak peak last month, and expected it to be the lesser of the recent mixtape but somehow it surpassed it. Getting Common to go in on Switch Up, going back to back with Nas on First Chain catching jokes with Juicy J on M.I.L.F and getting emotional on others - and at the playback - means he should be proud of this. Injustice: Gods Among Us Warner Bros. PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U Ever since Arkham Asylum opened our eyes to the possibilities of what could be done with a superhero franchise on current gen games consoles in 2009, the thirst for seeing Batman’s DC Comic buddies in a video game that recreates their respective universes so well, has increased dramatically. After a collaboration in 2008, the DC Universe and the world of Mortal Kombat have been separated by Warner Bros, but only in the way of characters and setting – not gameplay, thankfully. Everything that made the latter’s previous outing a joy to play have been brought to the various locations which comic book fans will recognize instantaneously. On top of the predictably slick gameplay and presentation, the control scheme is well laid out and usable, there’s a vast roster of DC favourites and villains to keep things interesting and there’s also a solid campaign mode and a well-constructed storyline to match. That said, Gods Among Us is worth picking up. 94 / rwdmag.com
Living Legend
Dead Island: Riptide Deep Silver, PS3, Xbox 360, PC Few games disappointed us quite like the original Dead Island. After teasing with possibly the best cinematic trailer the world of gaming had ever seen, the game itself was somewhat of a let down. This outing is great fun for a few hours, but not worthy of a full release. If it was DLC, it’d be a different story.
Star Trek Namco Bandai, PS3, Xbox 360, PC We weren’t expecting much from Star Trek: Into Darkness’ crossover, given that most film to game tie-ins are usually awful, but what we found was pleasantly surprising. Varied gameplay, authentic graphics and voiceover and a storyline that actually adds to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek universe make this a must have for Trekkies.
John Legend spoke to Nardene Scott on his recent stop in London about new album Love In The Future, not dressing like Kanye and why Rick Ross is rap’s Isaac Hayes. Fave track from Love In The Future... The Beginning was produced by Hit Boy and co-written by me and James Fontelroy and I love it. Working with Kanye in the studio... He’s such an interesting, creative mind and it’s been great having him suggesting beats and bringing in different producers to help craft the sound. I’ve seen him put that kind of care and attention in to his own albums but he had never done it to this extent for my album. Why Kanye dresses so cray... I gon’ let him have [the diamond mask] but I respect Kanye for doing him though. He really pushes himself to be at the forefront of everything when it comes to fashion and art, so you’ve got to respect that. We need that in the culture and he’s doing it. On those Rick Ross collaborations... Our voices work really well together, somebody recently called him the Isaac Hayes of rap because of these epic soundscapes that he likes to rhyme over, they carry so much gravity, so it’s perfect for [Who Do You Think You Are] because it’s so soulful and grand. It’s just about living life to the fullest and embracing whatever risks and challenges are out there and I felt like who better than Rosay. Love In The Future is out 24 May

Now in its 11th year, Alya Mooro flew to Tignes, France to check out the BRITs Winter Festival, the mass uprising that is the Apres (before, and during) Ski into week long festivities which promise to bring the best in skiing, snowboarding, championships, live music and of course after parties... It may be hailed as a competition but the atmosphere at the BRITs Winter Festival is an amicable one, no animosity here. This atmosphere was felt on and off the slopes, with the bars and clubs in Tignes absolutely swelling with red (raccoon-like tanned) faces, fists pumping and drink guzzling in a 90s themed club night, complete with Wayne’s World lookalikes in a club 30,000 ft high. Lest you forget the food the French have to offer, Fondue, Raclette, cheese, crepes, meats and more. Awe inspiring competition, good vibes, good food, good music and good company. RWD Round Up:
yungen, g frsh & krept In the first of our new series, RWD Round Up (which you can catch on RWDmag.com each and every month) we let rappers G FrSH and Play Dirty’s Krept and Yungen drop their thoughts about any and everything. This being our Style issue and all, the guys discuss leather overloads, mandem wearing dresses, like just how far is too far? Eavesdropped by Nardene Scott Photography by Sam Bond
Is It A Dress?
G FrSH: You’re not a long top kinda guy [looking at Krept]. Krept: I would try it, like I wouldn’t wear it out, I mean I’d try it on, sometimes A$AP wears one and it looks too long, like a dress. Yungen: Nah, I wouldn’t try and get away with it because I don’t think it’s my thing. G FrSH: I just like clothes innit so I will explore and experiment but someone like myself, I’m African, so wearing a long top, (or what someone else would call a dress) to our knees or past our knees is normal, when I’m doing my full Haji. On top of all of that, people are saying long tops are like a new thing, well if you really check out hip hop they used to wear long white T-shirts. If you go back to New Orleans, gang bangers are wearing that down to their knees, it’s always been there but the whole tight fitted T-shirt is a dress that’s a fact. 98 / rwdmag.com
Leather On Leather
G FrSH: I’m a leather guy still, Cloth Surgeon makes a lot of my leather stuff and yeah man you don’t sweat because it’s lined. Even in The Man I got a leather shirt made and... yeah, that was kind of hot though still [laughs] because I had a leather jacket on top [laughs] yeah that was a bit emotional still but leather is cool man. Krept: Yeah I don’t have a problem. I think they look sick! 100% Like leather trousers, they look flamboyant, superstar-ry, like if I see someone dropping it correctly, it’s like, ‘Who are you?’ Yungen: I don’t know about the leather pants though... G FrSH: [Listen up Charlie? - see page 19] I’m f**king with the leather trousers differently, not trousers, leather tracksuit bottoms. Me and Charlie Sloth had an argument about this and he was telling me they were trousers but they’re leather tracksuit bottoms! You know
when they’re loose and they’re leather, they are [tracksuit bottoms]. You’re not gonna wear leather tracksuit bottoms and go Tesco... it might not go down too well in my area because people will think I’ve gone mad; wearing a biker jacket is fashion forward around there. Yungen: That’s what I mean; you wouldn’t wear it on a day to day. G FrSH: Yeah, you come out chilling on the block in your red leather trousers [laughs] you’re just looking mad [laughs].
