RWDMAG.COM FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE 2012/13 UPDATE
image Sam Bond
After winning Fittest Editor of the Year in 2012 (thanks again Just Made That Up magazine), there isn’t much I can say on the subject of being fit and healthy. Apart from eating two of my five-a-day (on average) and putting in a star performance every Sunday morning - often being likened to Ronaldo, Messi and Steve Mcmanaman from ‘96 - I don’t really go out of my way to quench my fitness thirst. But, much like you, I do like the idea of being in shape - it’s just how do you pull yourself out of bed from a very important task to achieve this. Gym? Morning run? Some new console accessory that tracks the shape of your eyebrows? Whatever you choose, have fun. Those who are enjoying everything they put their minds to, are our cover stars, Rudimental. Be it in the UK Chart or in the gym, they’re holding it down. As is new RWD favourite Adam Gemili. Post London 2012, the 100m running, future Olympic gold medallist tells us about life on and off the track. Whether you’re into keeping fit or simply looking good, now is the perfect time to get in shape (or take pleasure in watching the opposite sex do so), just make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons!

LETTERS OF THE MONTH: Hey, I was at a gun range in Vegas over summer (do guns even count as a sport or getting fit? As part of the Olympic legacy, I’d say yes!) I took a few bursts at the target and felt a strange taste in my mouth and my tooth felt funny. Somehow a bullet sliced my upper lip and slightly chipped a tooth, it didn’t hurt at all but there was a LOT of blood! I now have a small scar on my upper lip and can now, in my best 2Pac voice, say ‘I got shot one time but I’m still breathing’! Jay P Was that actually a bullet though Jay? Or did the gun just recoil in your face? Either way, we really enjoyed your story and wish we could hear your 2Pac voice. Here, have a boombox. Hi RWD, I thought this fact was quite bizarre - a Man City fan was banned in 1995 from bringing dead chickens into Maine Road. He used to celebrate goals by swinging 6 / RWDMAG.COM
Hi there RWD, Did you know, Mary Queen of Scots (1542-87) was an avid golfer and coined the term “caddy” by calling her assistants cadets. It was during her reign that the famous golf course at St. Andrews was built. Alison K Interesting stuff there Alison, cheers for enlightening us. We’ll whip this fact out next time we’re aiming to get our balls in tiny holes. Hey RWD, In 1945, Arsenal were playing against Dynamo Moscow. During the match, fog appeared. The referee should have abandoned the game; however he didn’t want to because the away fans travelled all the way from Russia. The fog became so bad that one player got sent off, yet managed to get back on the pitch without being noticed. The Arsenal goalkeeper also ran into his own goalpost and was knocked unconscious. The Russian side were accused of having 15 players on the pitch, but this could not have been proven as no one could actually count all the players. Hope you enjoyed that. Matthew P That’s pretty hilarious! It would have been a funny match to watch (or try to watch) for sure. Good find Matthew P.

ICEN’TASTY Basically ice cream, but good for you. You’d better believe it. Check out... the best ‘fro-yo’ around. Lick is fat-free, probiotic and completely natural, which is good news when you’re trying this healthy eating thing out. Better still, they even won a Great Taste Gold Award, which basically means it tastes really nice. If you’re in Brighton, be sure to call in for a tub. Get yours at lickyogurt.com
I’ve been ‘fit’ from day, but not fit. I’ve convinced myself I was excellent at cross-country in my younger days. I totally wasn’t. It’s the knee high red socks and getting splattered in mud, dashing through the New Forest that made it the best bit of fitness I ever did do. Admittedly, once upon a time my local Market Sports sorted me right out. I even went as far as smoking (an electric cigarette) on a treadmill for The London Paper (RIP). I looked pretty decent. I nearly had a flat stomach. Alas, it didn’t last. I blame a relationship break-up and the discovery of Red Velvet cakes from the Hummingbird Bakery. In a nutshell, all this gym malarkey is way beyond me (note to self, delete ‘igogym’ from your list of accolades). Wobbly bits I salute you! After two years, a forgotten locker number and a bit of honesty, I decided I’d be better off with two Jessica Ennis medicine balls (currently on sale at Argos) and an exercise mat on my lounge floor. Watching soaps has never been so exhausting! As I laugh with Miranda I get double the tummy ache I normally would. By the end, thanks in part to her fantastic breast jokes and also to the wonders of sit ups with 3kg nestled between ones arms, I feel twice the fit woman I was a mere 30 minutes prior. I’m also revelling in the fact my osteopath has told me I can’t run. Ha! In your face running trainers. Gather dust, I need you not. I’ve also invested in a yoga DVD for 2013. With sleep in my eyes I gaze at whatshisname and set myself up for the day. It may be baby steps as I reintroduce myself to what’s really important but this time around I’m doing it my way. Screw you gym membership. Screw you. Join the daily chat with @chantellefiddy and @RWDmag 11

CNTR Centaur strikes back. Check out... the first edition of the adidas Centaur since 1984. Kings of rare designs and collabs, Hanon Shop are joining forces with adidas for comeback shoe of the week, the newly named CNTR. The welcome revamp is inspired by Aberdeen, the hometown of Hanon, with the colourway and materials inspired by the surroundings. Red accents bring the charm of the city, along with three ‘granite’ stripes created by printing the grain of the city’s stonework. Clever stuff. The multi-print footbed and inner tongue keep things interesting, but our favourite feature has to be dual brand imprint - the Hanon flame on the back of the left shoe and the classic adidas Trefoil on the right. Collaboration at it’s finest. The CNTR is available at hanon-shop.com from 26 January and in select Consortium stockists from 2 February

ENOUGH ALREADY: UNCANCELLED GYM MEMBERSHIP How much are you paying per month? £30? £40? £67.67? And still not going to the gym regularly (if at all)? Are you crazy? You better climb down from your money tree (if those feeble arms will allow) and run inside. There’s a storm coming and it’s heading for you flakey fitness fools... Words Danny Walker Illustration Art Jaz
Last January, you were at your lowest. No partner, no dates, no mates, no missed calls, nothing in the diary and the only messages coming through were from the belly underneath your belly, ‘Fill me with mince pies m8 ;-)’. It was a bad Christmas (receiving two G cup bras as ‘joke’ presents was deep but the liposuction leaflet was too far. Mums, eh?) and an even worse New Year (a midnight ice cream binge and a tear-lubricated shuffle to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, again). You needed something to kickstart 2012, right? Joining an expensive gym was not the answer though... Unless the question was, ‘How can I sign up to something I can’t really afford, don’t really enjoy doing and strain whilst using just about every machine, even the lockers... ONLY go to just the induction; therefore wasting my time, energy and, more importantly, money?’ This has been going on for years, 16 / RWDMAG.COM
guys (and girls, we’re not leaving the fairer sex out. You know how to waste a good wad of cash too. Just look at the bin bag of almost-new, a-few-with-the-tags-still-on clothes you were supposed to take to the charity shop six months ago). Why sign up? Why do it? Why have them take a load of money from your account(s) and then not go for the bi-weekly workout? What’s the point? Is it because you have no mates and nothing to do so you just sign up to things; the gym, Netflix, three months worth of home self-vasectomy lessons!?!?! It’s all pointless as you never move from your bunkbed, anyway. There are many, many reasons losers might sign up to the gym (thinking it will be the motivation they need to finally get a grip of their lives) and not go; being mega lazy - we can empathise with that, not wanting the world to see those gigantic moobs - we understand that,
“NEXT TIME YOU FEEL THE URGE TO IMPROVE YOURSELF, ACTUALLY GO TO THE GYM” severe levels of your halitosis “flairing up” and not wanting to speak to the staff (even on the phone... Just in case) - we feel/smell your pain. Next time you feel the urge to improve yourself, just do how we do: ACTUALLY GO TO THE GYM, use someone’s free/guest session or simply don’t sign up in the first place and spend the money on going out/computer games/needless amounts of trainers. You better get Active, Virgin, sort your life out or put Fitness First.

GORGON CITY Named after the greek mythological creature and Ninjaman’s alter ego (the city was random), Gorgon City are actually Foamo and RackNRuin. For our first Duck & Cover takeover of One to Watch, Nardene Scott delves into how the pair have been producing seriously good music for the clubs and radio alike. Image James Pearson-Howes
“At first it was just gonna be a one-off collab,” Foamo aka Kye begins to tell us. “The tracks didn’t sound like a combination of us, they sounded like someone new altogether, so we started a new project.” Pretty simple then, and when that ends up leading you into the doors of Black Butter Records, it can’t be a bad idea. The radio-friendly Real featuring Yasmin is released this month as part of their introductory EP, already picking up plays including a few blasts on Kye’s new weekly Rinse FM show. The track is a little lighter than their other bass-probing sounds, although a bassline to contend with, Real Matt aka RackNRuin tells us, was not even meant to be the result of the session with the RWD Legacy cover star. “It was sort of all of our creative ideas just flowing... working with Yasmin is wicked, she’s so cool.” Don’t be fooled though, there are harder tracks for the shufflers too, like Thor and as Matt explains the dirty 10 Below. “That was like when you finish with a vocalist and just make a banger, like, I’ve had enough of this f**king nice music, let’s create something horrible!”
“[10 BELOW] WAS, I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS F**KING NICE MUSIC, LET’S CREATE SOMETHING HORRIBLE!” Kye is enjoying life in the vocal lane too, “It’s exciting to do more than just getting a snippet of an old R&B track.” Although they both assure us the Official Charts aren’t top of the agenda during the production process, they may have a smash waiting in the wings, working with Magnetic Man affiliate, Anne Marie. Both are clearly excited about the year ahead, considering the success of Redlight, Disclosure and of course this month’s cover stars. Plus with Matt having come through the scene amongst acts like Dusky who he made jungle with back at college – they’re engrained in the EDM scene. Whatever happens, you can be sure RWD will be supporting and, if anything, we’ll at least try and make the never eaten meat in his life veggie Kye hit Nandos up. The Real EP is out 17 Feb. @GorgonCity
DENIM DEAL Each season, Duck And Cover’s directional take on trend-led menswear keeps us one step ahead of the game. MØ Somehow, despite having no official releases and just three tracks online, 23 year-old MØ managed to score a deal with Sony in Scandinavia. We reckon it’s probably because she’s pretty damn good. Now being pursued by some of the biggest labels in both the UK and the US, the talented babe is truly making waves. Her tracks, Pilgrim and Maiden feature amazing harmonies and mash up music videos a la Del Rey (only with less pouting and more dancing) whereas newly released instrumental Glass is more experimental. We’re really feeling her unique mix of super cool pop/ indie/hip hop/soul/glitchy electronica and are very much looking forward to checking out her debut album in 2013. MØ will be performing live at Islington’s Elektrowerkz on 28 February... RWD will see you there. [FD] @KarenMOMOMO Image Anne Sofie Skaaring 18 / RWDMAG.COM

ELLI INGRAM We feel proud we managed to drag this 19 year-old, Brighton-bred, Amy Winehouse and Jack Daniels fan away from the studio long enough for her to tell us that there is nothing more she loves than singing, creating melodic songs like Silver & Gold and her phone (“It’s really bad, I’m always on my iPhone, that should be my New Year’s resolution to cut it out.”). After recently appearing alongside Benny Banks on catchy Let Me Be, she reminds us it’s been a very long journey since “belting out Aretha Franklin” at the tender age of six. “Since then, it’s always been about the music,” the singer/songwriter explains. “I love my hip hop and things like that. There’s nothing else that makes me feel like music does. There is nothing that gives me that buzz when I finish writing a song that I’m proud of.” It’s only a matter of time before we’re just as proud of her progress. [DW] @ElliIngram Image Felix Joseph 19
#NANDOS, BOOT CUT JEANS AND SANDALS, NANS CURRY AND RICE, RECORD BREAKING
UPFRONT WITH... ADAM GEMILI US Sprinter Tyson Gay said Drake (as he calls him) is set to be an all time great after just a year in athletics and Adam Gemili most definitely has the record breaking times and talent to back up the hype. Nardene Scott talks to the east London footballer turned athlete about missing his nan’s curry, unforgivable fashion faux pas, classic kicks, dream training partners and just how fast he can go.
So as we’re on the photo shoot for the new Nike Air Max+ 2013 we’re guessing you’re into trainers? I think they’re very unique and they’re really classic. If you go back years and years, people are always wearing Air Max, they’re a very popular, well known shoe. I’m not a trainer geek but I do look after myself and try and wear decent trainers. I’m a big fan of Blazers. I’ve got a lot of different colours so I can match them with everything. Where do you see yourself on the swagger scale then? I’d like to think I’m stylish but I’m not very stylish at all. My sister tells me that quite a lot and a lot of my friends say, ‘Nah you’re not that stylish’. There must be a reason why they’re saying that. What bad style decisions can you share with us? There’s been quite a lot; my boot cut jeans with sandals. I wore that once, that was a while ago but I had nothing else to wear. It was like, I can’t be bothered to find socks or shoes, [laughs]. That was quite a faux pas!
“IT’S BEEN HARD TO NOT JUST EAT EVERYTHING I WANT TO EAT, LIKE ANYTHING MY NAN COOKS, I’LL NEVER SAY NO TO AND I DO LIKE NANDOS ” WOW. On a different note did you get to bring in the New Year in style or does your training regime hold you back? I had a couple of days off for Christmas, but then straight back into training and just working hard. You can’t really have too much of a rest because you can lose fitness very very easily. It’s very intense so we have got to be very sensible in what we eat. It’s been hard to not just eat everything I want to eat, like anything my Nan cooks, I’ll never say no to that and I do like Nandos. What exactly goes down in this training regime of yours? I get up really early, this morning I was up at 5:30am. Then I get to the track 6am or 7am and start training. I do a couple of sprint drills, warm ups and then I went outside, did some long lactic sessions to get really tired then eat lunch and go into the gym. Then go home and try and recover for the next day. So when was the last time you wanted to kill your coach then? 20 / RWDMAG.COM
Today, TODAY! When he’s like, ‘get to the line!’, you’ve got a next run and you’re dying with the lactic and struggling to walk. You just want to cry and run away and hide but you can’t. You’ve just got to get through it. Who would be your dream training partner; bear in mind that this doesn’t have to be an athlete? I’m a sprinter so it’s got to be Usain Bolt. I’d love to train with him, maybe Yohan Blake as well. They’re the two quickest guys in the world so they are like my idols for sprinting, if I was able to train with them, that would be something really special. The past year has been crazy for you breaking records, World Junior Champ, London 2012, all whilst studying. What have been your three highlights? I think the third thing would be coming second at the UK trials to qualify for the Olympics. That was just an amazing moment for me and that’s when I realised I would actually be in the games. The second was actually the Olympic Games and reaching the semi-final and just the whole experience. And first, I think the first athletic experience for me, winning the Junior Athletic Championship because that was my first and I was world champion! I was loving it and it was just the best feeling in the world, I couldn’t sleep that night and I couldn’t do anything, it was just amazing for me. Athletes have to be focused and determined but when it comes to you how do you stay inspired? My parents are a big inspiration, they’ve kept me very level headed and grounded. They don’t let me forget where I’ve come from and let me get too big for my boots. They just work really, really hard and they look after me and give me every opportunity, so they’re a great inspiration. What’s the plan for 2013? What techniques are you working on and how fast do you think you can go? I’ve got a lot to work on, obviously I’ve only been in this sport since this time last year. I had to learn a lot quickly last year, so I think I’m gonna take things slow and get back to basics, get quicker and hopefully run faster than ever. Who knows what time I could run. #DINGY DANA, EGG MENACE, LIPSING
MORGAN SAYLOR Best known for playing the angst-ridden teen, Dana Brody in political drama Homeland; Nardene Scott chats to giggling actress Morgan Saylor about her role in the addictive series, what she think will happen next and her own little rebellious streak... Image Chris Stanford
18 year-old, Chicago native Saylor had a Montessori education and slowly found a love for acting via summer camp. Picking up roles along the way in commercials and then films including Father Of Invention alongside Kevin Spacey and eventually – once she had convinced her parents – a small role in The Sopranos, so it’s been a steady rise to success. It’s been in the Emmy Award sweeping, Golden Globe gong grabbing Channel 4 show Homeland that she was able to tap into her rebellious teenage side. Dana, the daughter of the tortuously torn, ex-marine turned terrorist, Nicholas Brody, played by Brit 24 / RWDMAG.COM
actor Damian Lewis was introduced to viewers smoking a bong and went on to become an accomplice to murder in a hit and run incident... not to mention being entangled in her dad’s many, many issues. But just how rebellious is the teen in real life? “My friends say I play myself on TV but I don’t think that’s true,” the Georgia residing girl laughs. “There are a lot of similarities though, I’ve just had my rebellious teenage stage but I am now a little older and think I’m less teenage but I can relate.” Revealing a recent suspension from school during homecoming for egging another grade on campus, it
“MY FRIENDS SAY I PLAY MYSELF BUT I DON’T THINK THAT’S TRUE… THERE ARE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES THOUGH, I’VE JUST HAD MY REBELLIOUS TEENAGE STAGE”
appears a slice of Dana has crept into Morgan’s life, just a little. Surprisingly though, unlike everyone in the RWD office, her public school peers don’t share our undying love for the hit show, “I don’t think that many people watch it to be honest but that’s good, I like my normal life here.” “This season there was a lot of agony, like my eyebrows were... I’m holding my forehead now thinking about it,” Morgan recalls of playing the stroppy teen. “There were a couple of episodes where she’s going to the hospital and then to visit the daughter, all that sh*t and it was exhausting to be in
that place for so long.” No wonder in the future, distant future we have to add, as Homeland most definitely has her attention for the next few years, dream roles include a love story, the character, of course would still have to be complex. Our damagingly desperate dig for gossip completely flops, telling us in a super high pitch voice, “I have no idea, there are like eight different roads it could go down... I haven’t even seen the script at all.” Calming down only to dream of possibilities, “I’m so curious to how they’re gonna bring Brody back and of course there’s his love for Carrie and the family he probably feels for them and wants to
see them again.” We’ll have to wait until late summer to see for ourselves exactly how the story does pan out but no doubt Dana will be there giving daggers, “I think she experienced that little rich life but I don’t think she’s a fan of it, I think we’ll see more of a dingy Dana.” Hopefully the awkward kissing scenes in front of the whole cast and crew are a thing of the past then, with rich kid Finn out of the picture. One thing’s for sure, RWD’s excited about seeing more from this screen star in waiting. Morgan Saylor appears courtesy of Management 360 25
FLEUR IS FIT With our girlfriends running off to the gym every 10 seconds, it’s clear that toning up has always been for both sexes. Someone who knows her way around toning facilities (aka the gym) is Fleur. With her D&B infused, Culture Shock produced, single Turn The Lights On ready to drop, she tells Danny Walker how she stays fit. Images Jon Attenborough Styling Janine Jauvel

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: W/ FLEUR’S FLAT STOMACH Stomach knows best... How are you today, Fleur’s stomach? Actually, how are you most of the time? [I hold the Dictaphone to Fleur stomach]... I’m pretty happy most of the time. Especially after food. What food has Fleur been treating you to? It’s mostly healthy but every now and then she treats me, she gives me a banoffee pie. That’s where we differ, stomach, I hate banoffee pie! I love it. It’s so good! [It appears as if Fleur’s stomach is smiling at this point]. Banana should not be in dessert. It’s all about cheesecake! Yeah, well. We also love African food as our mum is from Ghana, so the jollof rice, chicken. We also like salad, sushi... Stomach, why are you so flat? That is down to a lot of sit-ups, a lot of ab working out and just eating healthily, things that don’t bloat me; like bread and pasta. Are the other body parts getting jealous of all the attention Fleur is paying to you? [Laughs] I think they are, I think they’re jealous and hating on me. I get dodgy looks from Fleur’s arms and things like that. Did DJ Fresh take a shine to you, when you were on tour with him? Any gossip there? [Her stomach laughs and goes a bit shy]. Now and then yeah, there were a few little sly looks. Gossip? Come on, you must have seen a few things? Yeah, a few other stomachs on the tour bus! Ever had any belly bling? No, I wanted to get pierced but thought I’d keep it natural. If you could train/workout with any celeb’s stomach, who’s would it be, stomach? Mel B, she has a very nice stomach... oh and J.Lo, she’s had two kids too. She looks amazing. Really good. Any male stomachs? Maybe, Tyson Beckford, I’d love to get a stomach on with him! For more info on Fleur’s flat stomach check the Turn The Lights On video
PRESS GANG Next stop the leg press...
GET YOUR LAT ON Fleur’s got love for the lat machine... When did you first get into fitness? I’ve always been into it really. From the age of like 10/11 I was always in sports days doing things like 200 metres. Then I joined the netball team, did cross-country running and then I did dance for years after. How much time do you spend at the gym? I usually spend about an hour, it really keeps me motivated. Complete the sentence: I’d rather go to the gym than... [long pause] ...walk around shopping for an hour. Good gym session or good bed session? [Laughs hard] bed session! And which ones burns more calories? Bed session [laughs]. Tell us about, the lat machine. It looked easy for you... After a while your body gets used to it. I push myself each time and increase the weight every time I do a session too. What would you give it out of five? FOUR - It’s all about low reps for toning and building lean muscle.
With the leg press, that was basically lying down, there must be more to it... [Laughs] ahhh, the leg press is actually really difficult; it’s great for toning. It’s almost the same as when you do a squat as well, cos it works your glutes as well. If I were to use it, which weights would I use... [I hold my hands together and start to move them apart, almost instantly Fleur jumps in]... STOP!!! [Laughs]. Which machine gets women’s bums in shape? The leg press and also the squatting area. And the leg press out of five? FIVE - It’s good, it’s my favourite machine.

CROSS WORDS Fleur sits down to discuss cardio...
COOL RUNNINGS Fleur shows us how to run tings... On the treadmill, where are you running to? [Laughs] I usually have a goal; I think, ‘If you want to have a No.1, run for another 20 minutes.’ ‘If you want to go on tour again...’ they’re a life goal. I visualise myself running towards it and that’s what motivates me. What would you give it out of five? THREE - You get more of a work out if you’re running on the street because of the levels. When did you first get that music bug? It was straight away. As soon as I could talk and before I could walk I was singing along to everything. My parents played a lot of music in the house, all day everyday so I was heavily influenced by music. Explain your single, Turn the Lights On... We heard the beat from Culture Shock and then I wrote the song to it, I loved it first time I heard it. It’s just so melodic and it inspired me to write about partying. Which is another thing I love to do. And that video looks cool. Stomach gets another little feature... Yeah, it was. Stomach gets out there too [laughs]. It was just like a party all day. What’s next? Turn the Lights On is released next month, it’s my little baby now, and then there’s more touring with DJ Fresh, which starts at the end of February in Australia. I’m very excited about that and then festivals and my own stuff/album is after that. Turn the Lights On is out in February, check @FleurOfficial for more. Many many thanks to LA Fitness (lafitness.co.uk) 28 / RWDMAG.COM
With fitness there are things like zumba, body pump, what are all these things. Zumba looks crazy. Some Latin dance that they’re making money from. Zumba is wicked; the classes are really good as well. It doesn’t feel like you’re working out either. Also, the time goes by quicker when you’re working with other people. I enjoy zumba because I danced for years. It’s a bit more fun for me. I do spin class and I do body conditioning as well. Spin class looks insane. There is like 1000 people in this little room. Would I die doing spinning? [Laughs] Maybe in the beginning. Na, you’ll be fine. Explain your cardio routine? If I don’t do a class, I’d do about 20 minutes of cardio and the rest would be circuit training. I’d go on the cross-trainer or the bicycle. This is all to get the blood flowing and get the heart rate up before I go on the weights. What would you give the cross-trainer out of five? FOUR – Cos you’re working your arms as well.

Keys Open Doors When four friends from Hackney, Piers, Leon, Kesi and Amir aka Rudimental chose to mould together their musical minds, the British public lapped it up. Everyone lapped it up. 2012 proved that the aberrant ensemble could deliver music to make crowds go wild, resulting in chart success and although No.1s were never the focus, it’s only natural their amalgamation of UK house, garage, D&B and soul creeps deeply into six figure sales. Amir
Piers
Leon
Kesi 56 / RWDMAG.COM
WHO ATE ALL THE PIES? Who is the fittest member of Rudimental? Amir: Not me! Piers: It’ll be Leon, Kesi used to be but... [laughs]. Kesi: ...I stopped football for music. Leon: Fittest one as in healthy? If it’s the sexiest one, I would say Amir. Piers: My sex life is good [all laugh]... Since I had a No.1! Leon: I keep active, I go gym and run. Who gets the fittest groupies? Leon: We’ll skip that question. All: Errrrm... Piers: We don’t know what groupies are [long pause]. Leon: When we break up, we’ll get back to you. If you were going to get back on the gym hype, who would be your ideal training partner? Kesi: Locksmith [Leon], gotta be. Piers: Erm Graham Norton [all laugh]. Any reason why? Piers: He’s a funny guy, it kinda just came out. DJ Locksmith that would be my gym partner, scrap that other one. Leon: I’d love to train with the big guys like Arnie and Stallone, to see how they train. For the fitness forfeit, how many copies of Feel The Love have been sold in the UK? Piers: 622,000 Amir: 638,000 Kesi: 632,000 Leon: 615,000 It’s actually 619,000, so Amir get down and give us 10!
So how did you guys come up with the name Rudimental? Kesi: When I used to go to piano lessons, there was a book that used to go along with the lessons. It’s called The Book Of Rudiments and Rudiments didn’t really work for one person but as a quartet, it seemed pretty cool. Leon: Your voice is so soft. It really is so calm and relaxing. Kesi: Thank you. Okay then... So using your name, what’s the rudest or most mental thing you’ve ever done? Leon: The most mental thing I’ve ever done is probably run around the hotel
“WE ALL GREW UP IN HACKNEY AND ESPECIALLY IT BEING OUR SECOND LIVE GIG, WE DIDN’T EXPECT ANY SORT OF TURN OUT. WE ENDED UP WITH 8,000 PEOPLE IN A FIELD SCREAMING OUT OUR SONGS -KESI
room naked in Sweden. Kesi: You’ve done more than that man... Piers: This is just what we can say online. The rude part of the name is actually ironic because we’re actually really nice guys. So we flipped it because you can’t actually get anywhere in this industry if you’re rude. We’re just mental, a nice mental. What was the first thing you did when you found out you were nominated for a BRIT Award? Piers: We didn’t do much. We was in the studio, busy finishing the album. Amir: I think we had a cup of tea. Kesi: When we got taken to the nominations, we didn’t even know what was going on. We were in our normal clothes. Piers: We so expected to just sit down with some guy from the BRITs for a meal and for him to go, ‘You’re nominated!’... [Group laugh]. Piers: ...And then we went in and it was some big ceremony! Leon: We were just over the moon ecstatic, all the usual emotions. It was crazy; it just feels so good to be a part of that. Amir: It’s a dream come true, I’d say. What’s the gossip though? Who was
drunk? Who tried to get whose number? Leon: It’s pretty crazy because I was actually abroad DJing...Word on the street is, everyone is trying to get my number still... Piers: It felt like an in and out vibe. I think 20 February, that’s the big one where they’ll be stories and probably stories about us. Amir: That’s it! We’re gonna get smashed and try not to do anything. So guys, who’s the biggest drunkard in the group? Piers: We’ve all got the beast inside us; it comes out at different times. Leon: We can’t even disclose the names of them beasts! Piers: No, yeah, we’ve all got names but anyway... moving on... That sounds serious. What’s been the craziest reaction at a gig? Amir: It’s been getting better and better. It started off with a really high level at Hackney Weekender, and then it just kicked off. I didn’t really think it could get better but it did. Kesi: Hackney Weekender was definitely a highlight for me, like, that’s our back garden. We all grew up in Hackney and especially it being our second live gig, we didn’t expect any sort of turn out. We ended up with 8,000 people in a field screaming out our songs. Piers: I remember Creamfields that was really just like the whole crowd and the best acapella rendition of Feel The Love. Leon: The kind of receptions we’ve been getting over the years for not only our live sets, our DJing sets, have been absolutely phenomenal. So thanks for everyone out there supporting us. We’ve seen you live a few times, how did the live set up come about? Piers: We’re all musicians; Amir plays guitar, Kesi plays keys and percussion, Leon plays keys and does a bit of the MPC stuff and I play keys as well. So it’s kind of natural to transfer it into the live thing and we all enjoy it. You get in the studio and get a buzz but when you can actually write a song and perform it, that’s the best feeling. Leon: Bang on. There’s nothing better than everyone going nuts on the songs that you’ve worked so hard for. The live set consists of us doing what we do, playing instruments and hyping the crowd. We’ve also got our trumpet player Mark Crown and our vocalists who come on and off the stage, so it is a good vibe. Piers: Like 8 to 10 people sometimes. Leon: Gets a bit mental, don’t it?>> 57
>> And the album is due for a live airing soon too? Amir: It’s nearly there, it’s going to be a lot of weight off of our shoulders. We’re doing the Plan B tour in February with Labrinth, so that’s going to be amazing! Leon: We’ve also got Australia in March and America. Piers: Village Underground on the 22 Feb in Shoreditch, we’re gonna be able to show people that we’re an album act hopefully and there’s a lot more to us than just D&B. There’s gonna be house, garage, jungle... Amir: And a lot of soul... Leon: Because that is definitely what unites Rudimental.
Leon: He kissed a boy. [Group laugh] Piers: I had long hair and this boy asked me out in nursery. So it’s cool, you know, I’m in touch with my sexuality. I got a girlfriend [group laugh]. Leon: Next question. Getting over that visual let’s talk about Rudimental visuals. Your videos are amazing but do you guys have a phobia of being in front of the lens? Amir: We just want to bring the music to the front. The videos bring a new meaning to the song sometimes. We find it a little bit boring, if it’s just four guys in front of the camera, so we like to make it into a mini film. Piers: And we’re into reality and not
“WE’RE GONNA BE ABLE TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT WE’RE AN ALBUM ACT HOPEFULLY AND THERE’S A LOT MORE TO US THAN JUST D&B. THERE’S GONNA BE HOUSE, GARAGE, JUNGLE...” -PIERS
Kesi: Soul and bass. If you were all to describe the album in one word, what would you say? Leon: We keep on using it all the time, I think it’s probably the perfect word, eclectic. Any surprise guests on the album? Amir: Obviously, Angel Haze is on there and we just did a track with Emeli Sandé, John Newman who is on the first two singles and Alex Clare. Leon: There’s a couple of underground artists as well, like MNEK and Sinead Harnett. How did Hell Could Freeze come about? Piers: That’s my little sister singing, on the track. She came to the studio, we kind of wrote the idea with her and made the beat. Then when Angel Haze was in London, she heard the beat and basically wrote to it in like half an hour, as good rappers do. Amir: We did a few tracks together, so you’ll hear the other ones very soon. Leon: It just sums up what we’re about. You’ve got the Angel Haze track, you’ve got Spoons, then D&B, so just imagine what the album is gonna be like! We’ve grown up with each other so we’re on the same page. Piers: Yeah he’s got a few stories about me from nursery that we don’t... Let’s talk about them now... Kesi: I don’t think he’d want to [laughs]. 58 / RWDMAG.COM
beating around the bush. We are from the real world and we’ve worked with young people, we’ve done a lot of work in that area, so to do videos like that is kind of important. Leon: We’ve all done mentoring or community work and it definitely is what we’re about. We’re not on having our faces in there, like look at us. Finally 2013. What’s the one thing you all want to happen this year? Leon: I know what he wants in 2013... [points to Piers]. Piers: Girlfriend. Leon: It starts with G but it isn’t girlfriend. Piers: Oh, Game Of Thrones Series 3! [Group laugh]. Piers: When that comes out BOOM! The music industry is dead to me. Leon: Glastonbury. Amir: When we first met, that’s one of the first conversations we had, what do we want to do in a few years time? We all said that we want to play Glastonbury, at the Other Stage or the Main Stage as a live act. So that’s kind of what we’re aiming for this year or next year. In need of some minimal effort, post-workout activities? James Humphrys recommends kicking back with these new titles... PREVIEW
Dead Space 3
EA Xbox 360, PS3, PC Two years on from the release of mentally disturbed systems engineer Isaac Clarke’s second outer-space adventure, EA’s Dead Space series returns for what looks set to be the biggest, best, and creepiest title in the series to date. With two months gone since the escape from The Sprawl at the end of the second game, our boy Isaac is, inevitably, drawn straight back into action by Necromorph survivor, John Carver. And further down the line, Ellie Langford, for another adventure across unchartered, frozen planet, Tau Volantis, and another fight to save humanity. With more creepy alien enemies, this is undoubtedly a continuation of an already epic series, as opposed to an attempt to switch things up a gear. However, the added unique co-op mode, that offers gamers a different experience depending on which characters they have control of, turns Dead Space 3 from a potential also ran to an early frontrunner in the race for the 2013 Game of the Year crown. 62 / RWDMAG.COM

#THAT GUY FROM SKINS DOING AN AMERICAN ACCENT, ARNIE’S BACK, SLY’S STILL ALIVE
FILMS Put your trainers on and run down to the cinema for this month’s big screen selections. PREVIEW Warm Bodies Entertainment One Cert. 12A When an invitation for a screening to a romantic comedy drops into our inbox, it usually ends up being marked as spam. However, the promise of added zombies was very intriguing. From the get go, it quickly becomes apparent that Warm Bodies is, without doubt, a rom-com like no other, as zombie R (Nicholas Hoult) assists in an undead assault on a group of humans that includes the daughter of anti-zombie general, Julie (Teresa Palmer). After killing her boyfriend and eating his brain, he takes a shine to his would-be victim and it all goes off from there. While the twist on a classic genre is a nice idea, Warm Bodies is a film that struggles to know exactly what it is. Is it a romantic drama? Is it a comedy? Is it a survival horror film? We’re not sure ourselves, but we do know that, despite its identity crisis, it’s smart, laugh out loud funny in places and not too sappy. [JH] 64 / RWDMAG.COM
MUSIC Let good tunes and good health guide you through life. If you can’t do the good health part concentrate on music...
Last Stand Lionsgate Cert. 15 The best thing to do is to go into Last Stand with small expectations and what you’ll end up with is a guilty pleasure action flick. With barely passable acting (laughable almost) and a plot riddled with so many holes it hurts, it’s just good to see Arnie do what he does best; that’s kick ass, fill the bad guys with lead and drop those cheesy oneliners! [JG]
“Oh, hi everyone“
Major Lazer Free The Universe Mad Decent/ Downtown
Bullet to the Head Entertainment One Cert. 15 When Rocky teams up with the Korean guy from the Fast and the Furious series all hell breaks loose. With New Orleans as the backdrop Sylvester Stallone and Sung Kang – respectively play hard-hitting hitman and delving detectives in what is ultimately a ruthless rollercoaster ride of action. Sly still being able to deliver those classic lines (“What are we, Vikings?”), Bullet... was a pleasant surprise.
With one of the most impressive list of collabs we’ve ever seen, listeners can expect to hear the likes of Santigold, Vybz Kartel, Haim, Yasmin, Dirty Projectors, Bruno Mars and a whole lot more. Seriously. How could it be bad? It’s the opposite of bad. It’s good. Really good. [FD] Track to Check: Free The Universe

“La Roux 2” BeBe Black The Death Wish EP Sony This ‘POP SINGIN’ HAIR BLEACHIN’ TAP DANCIN’ BASTARD CHILD’ has a great voice, but we’re not sure about her musical style. The EP is very La Roux circa ’09 and features three tracks as well as two remixes of the title track. If only Benga produced it, as her feature on his 2012 Icon was actually really good. #DON’T TALK ABOUT SURGERY, EXPLICIT PANTO
BE KIND REWIND RWD JOSIE GIBSON Even after an incredible four stone weight loss Big Brother 2010 winner Josie Gibson still has people on her back about snacking, surgery and stomach bands of the gastric variety. After quizzing the 27 year-old about snacking, surgery and stomach bands of the gastric variety, she tells RWD about life in the fitness lane...
BE KIND RATING Words we had to get in: Surgery: Sorry, we HAD to ask. Quote we had to leave out: “I’ve always been a goof mate, I can’t help it. It just comes out. My brain is just a problem.” What we learned: Josie once dated a guy who played for QPR, she thought it was a Sunday league team and told him to ‘get a real job’.

We’d thought you’d be perfect for our fitness issue. What was the worst thing about being a size 20? For me it was very limiting to what you could wear. You just wore whatever fitted, really. It was just a nightmare. Every time I’d go out shopping, I’d nearly burst into tears. You dropped five dress sizes - what have you done with them,? Have you given your old dresses to Cheryl Cole? [Laughs] eBay! Cheryl Cole? [Laughs]. Obviously I’ve got curves, but these girls are tiny in real life. And when were you at your biggest? Was it post- Big Brother? Post is after innit? [Laughs] the biggest I ever got was nearly 16 and a half stone. I just thought it was too late or I’m never going to do it. What was the turning point? Did a dress just rip open when you were walking down the street or something? Yeah, all my clothes used to have a lifespan of about three months. They’d always rip or whatever. I never thought I’d be able to [get thinner]. So I researched loads and loads and read loads of things and this high interval training [as seen or her DVD, 30-Second Slim] is scientifically proven to work. So what are your meals like now? Is it 66 / RWDMAG.COM
just one carrot a day? No way! God, I’m a foodie. I love my food. So I needed a diet where I could eat a lot and I won’t be hungry so I took on the Paleo diet. It’s like a caveman diet. Which is where you cut out all the sh*t basically. I don’t even miss it. I had a little slip up over Christmas, but if you can’t enjoy yourself over Christmas, when the f**k can you enjoy yourself? Have you heard of those weird diets of just eating cotton wool? Yeah, what’s wrong with these people? Just eat naturally and healthy. I bet they look like sh*t, too. You’re not going to have drastic surgery are you? I always say that I’d like my tits done but when it comes to it, I’d sh*t myself. And what do you say to all the press you’ve had about you supposedly having surgery?
I think all the negative comments are from people who are a bit jealous. I bet they’re fat. Sat there, REALLY bitter cos they haven’t lost theirs. ‘She must have had a gastric band!’ [Laughs] It’s just hard work I’m not going to lie, so I always want to keep setting myself goals in case I get comfortable. Apart from the DVD, what have you been up to recently? Panto? Well, I’ve just finished panto. I was the Genie of the Lamp [in Aladdin]. I was working with Flawless and [Loose Women’s] Carol McGiffin. I loved every single minute of that. But the thing is next year; I want to be in explicit panto. A dirty one. Yeah. OK, we didn’t know the interview was going there. Yeah, I’d play the Fanny Godmother! 30-Second Slim is out now. @Josietweets
