Design is a way of life, a point of view. It involves the whole complex of visual communications: talent, creative ability, manual skill, and technical knowledge. Aesthetics and economics, technology and psychology are intrinsically related to the process. - Paul Rand

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

The project is in a hotel (36 stories) within a redeveloped (formally industrial) portion of Shanghai near a downtown location. This hotel will be developed as the finest hotel in the city. The hotel will become the premier destination for business people and the preferred venue for social events in the city. The hotel strives to achieve unique interiors, in harmony with contemporary architecture and reflective of the context and the market. The design ensures easy maintenance and lasting beauty space despite heavy traffic and the passage of time.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

RESEARCH

As the business center of China, Shanghai is a bustling city. The sidewalk are crowded with people, and the street are heavy with traffic. This kind of atmosphere makes people nervous and tired. On the other hand, there is another aspect of Shanghai which is the traditional landscape where you can feel relaxed and calm.

5

RAN WANG

CONCEPT

As this is a business hotel, I am considering the needs of business people. The imperative factor is to attract them to the hotel and give them the most comfortable experience in Shanghai. Therefore, I decided to use Chinese Zen as the concept for this hotel. Because some Chinese temples have surrounding landscape, natural views combine with classic temple atmosphere to create a sense of relaxed feeling.

6

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

INSPIRATION

These images have inspired me so much with this hospitality design project. You can see the primary materials are wood and marble. I think these are the most natural feeling material to represent my concept.

7

RAN WANG

CONCEPT SKETCHES

These sketches are my initial concept sketches for this project. I have designed several unique elements for this hotel. The purpose is to creat an elegant and comfortable interior experience.

I used full-height wooden partitions to define space within the hallway. There are plants and art works between these partitions. I want to create a natural and relaxed feeling for the hotel.

13

For the guestroom, the main material choices are stone, wood and sustainable paint. This guestroom has a smart electronic system to contral the interior lighting via an iPad on the night stand.

RETAIL DESIGN

The project is retail remodeling project for the Michael Kors store in Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco. This store will be designed for the Michael by Michael Kors brand. The target customer is younger than the customer for Michael Kors, and the price is less expensive than the price for Michael Kors.

RAN WANG

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

22

RETAIL DESIGN 23

CONCEPT

My concept for this store is " Eclipse". As you know, an eclipse is rare to see. For this store, I want to use an eclipse to reveal that the merchandise in the store is the best and rarest in the market. Another espect of the concept is that an eclipse glows with white light, which is the original color and lighting scheme of Michael Kors store.

RAN WANG

INSPIRATION

I got the inspiration for the design from the whole process of an eclipse. This inspired me to create the illuminated door frame and the strip lighting in the ceiling. I want to use this concept to create a fantasy shopping experience for the customers.

24

RETAIL DESIGN

CONCEPT SKETCHES

I will transform the whole process of an eclipse into several LED strip lighting fixtures, like the hand sketch and the 3D image shows.

I have designed full height mirrors between each display shelf. The primary color of this store will be white. The LED strip lighting fixtures are recessed into the display shelves and the floor.

RAN WANG

STOREFRONT RENDERING

The storefront is a crucial part for a store. This storefront is clean and simple with black and white as the main color scheme. The wooden cylinder display shelves with LED lighting surrounding them indicate the concept of an eclipse.

30

RETAIL DESIGN

INTERIOR RENDERINGS

These Interior renderings show how the LED strip lighting fixtures work for the concept. The carpet pattern is another design element. I want to lead customers to the back corner, where there will be a promotion area .

OFFICE DESIGN

The company Summit is building a mountain town in the heart of Utah`s Wasatch Mountains following a spirit of innovation. The mountain town will be called " Summit Community". This project is a commercial design project with offices for several companies as well as short term residential accommodation.

OFFICE DESIGN

CONCEPT

UNDULATE

Undulating architecture has its own beauty. I want to create an undulating office building with unique style. I was inspired by the Chinese ribbon dance. Normally, the shape of the ribbon is curved, but if you use your imagination, the ribbon can be abstracted into orthogonal lines. I will incorporate these shapes in the section of this building.

OFFICE DESIGN

PENCILS OF PROMISE

Based on the color of the logo for Pencils of Promise, I chose yellow as the primary color of this office. Pencils of Promise is a non-profit organization that helps children to get access to quality education. Therefore, I feature images of children who have been helped by the organizition.

51

RAN WANG

UBER

Uber is a company which provides taxis and private car services. I use black as the primary color and there will be a huge digital wall behind the reception area. This wall is a world map, and once a city has Uber service, the lighting fixture will become blue.

52

OFFICE DESIGN

RESIDENTIAL

This is residential space designed for the staffs, if they have to work late, they can sleep there. Outside of the window, there are aluminum shading system which inspired by the siemens middle east headquaters.

53

RAN WANG

EXTERIOR

You can see the aluminum shading system of this building. Each of the shading panel has different angel to prevent excessive sunlight.
