what we do
Roger Williams Park Zoo’s mission is: as leaders in conservation and animal care we create engaging experiences that empower guests to join us in conserving wildlife and wild places. As an accredited member of the Associations of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), in 2023, the Zoo was granted a 3-year accreditation renewal by AZA. Our accreditation is assurance that visitors are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care of animals, a great experience for guests, and a better future for all living things. This includes our participation in cooperative conservation and breeding programs to help ensure the future survival of many endangered species. Each time you visit Roger Williams Park Zoo, make a contribution, purchase an item, or share your love of the natural world with others, you are supporting the mission of the zoo.
Conservation and environmental stewardship are at the core of our mission. The Zoo actively participates in 55 AZA Species Survival Plans which propagate endangered and threatened species in zoos. In 2023, the Zoo’s conservation efforts helped to save Eastern and Mexican box turtles from illegal pet trade and protected threatened local species like the American burying beetle, New England cottontail, and Eastern spadefoot tadpoles through breeding and release in the wild.
In my short time at Roger Williams Park Zoo, I am both proud and awed by the amount that we as a community have been able to accomplish together already. As evidenced in this report, 2023 was nothing short of remarkable, thanks to you!
With your support, we introduced new species, both living and extinct, to our beautiful grounds. Our seasonal event, Dinosaurs Among Us told the story of the prehistoric wildlife whose descendants live on today as our flighted feathered friends. Along with our partners from Natural Encounters, guests joined us in learning about the magnificent animals that fly among us, through our summer bird show, Dinosaurs in Flight.
We also engaged in many significant upgrades to the habitats of our animal collections, from literally raising the roof on the outdoor gibbon habitat to replacing our beloved red pandas’ habitat with a state-of-the-art facility where guests can visit them more regularly in the hot summer months.
Thanks to your help, we also built a beautiful new home for servals right at the front of the Zoo, opening spring of 2024. Together with our community we raised nearly $350,000 to fund this project in just a few months’ time, a spectacular feat in itself.
There are so many things you helped support in 2023 that I couldn’t possibly list them all in this note. With much more to come in 2024 and over the next few years, the future of your Zoo is beyond bright. We are so thankful for your continued investment in Roger Williams Park Zoo. You are instrumental in continuing to make our amazing animal collection and gorgeous grounds Rhode Island’s number one attraction.
Thank you once again for joining us in conserving wildlife and wild places.

“It takes a village...”
Serval Habitat Capital Campaign
“The Arican proverb “It takes a village…’ spans meany cultures and fundamentally acknowledges the role of others in supporting a common goal; and in the case of a newly acquired serval at Roger Williams Park Zoo, we relied on our community to help build her a new home. In 2023, the Zoo participated in the emergency relocation of more than 75 felines from a distressed private breeding facility in California, including a serval named Velma.
Prior to her arrival, servals were included in the Zoo’s 20-year master plan, however the acquisition and exhibit construction costs were not expected for another few years. Thanks to the incredible support of our community and donors listed below, Velma will thrive in an environment specifically designed for her.

donor impact
A beautiful giraffe sculpture was commissioned and generously donated to the Zoo by Sarah and Charley Denby. The sculpture was created by artist Joseph Fichter. This magnificent giraffe sculpture is a welcome addition to the grounds of Roger Williams Park Zoo, located in front of the giraffe yard.
Thanks to the generosity of longtime supporters Sarah and Charley Denby, a stunning new giraffe sculpture joined our herd! In fall of 2023, a life-size baby giraffe sculpture crafted by renowned artist Joseph Fichter, was dedicated at the Zoo.
For Sarah and Charley, the love of animals and art intertwined beautifully. Long-time admirers of Fichter’s work, they saw a perfect fit in his expertise with welded and forged sculptures and the idea for a magnificent giraffe sculpture took root.
With the Zoo’s 150th birthday looming in 2022, the Denbys saw a unique opportunity. They connected with Fichter, sparked a conversation about the similarities between giraffes and horses, and voila! The perfect artist for this magnificent project was found.
But the Denbys aren’t just animal and art lovers, they’re also local advocates. Sarah’s a dedicated community
volunteer and Zoo board member, while Charley is a champion of public art. They envisioned this sculpture as a gift to the public, a chance for everyone to enjoy a little whimsy, a touch of steel-forged wonder amidst the reallife wonders of the Zoo.
The unveiling of the reused metal sculpture took place this past November with a gathering of local officials, the artist and his family, the Denbys themselves, and a whole zoo-full of press, community members, Zoo volunteers and staff. This is just one example of how the Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to grow and evolve, thanks to the dedication of supporters like Sarah and Charley Denby.
Now, our metallic marvel stands proud outside the giraffe habitat, greeting visitors. So, the next time you visit the Zoo, keep your eyes peeled for this charming new resident.

Liz Mauran Recognized for her distinguished service with Emeritus Appointment
“Liz completes her term as a Board member, leaving a legacy of leadership and generosity that will be hard to match. Her transition to trustee emeritus will allow us to keep her close as a permanent member of the Zoo family.” Said Patrick LeBeau, Chairman of the Rhode Island Zoological Society Board of Trustees.
In addition to this recognition, Roger Williams Park Zoo has installed a plaque at the Sophie Danforth Administration Building, recognizing all Trustee Emeriti for their outstanding years of service. The entire Zoo family is grateful to Mrs. Mauran for her many years of dedication to conserving wildlife and wild places.
In 2023, the Zoo paid tribute to Nancy Derrig, superintendent of Providence Parks from 1985 to 2003 with this dedication plaque. The “Derrig Overlook” plaque lies within the bricks at the overlook between the giraffe and elephant habitats at the Zoo.
