Ullswater Trail No.1

Produced in August 2007 ~ read and use at your own risk ~ Safety at all times.

Background: I had a 2-night stop at Park Foot campsite, launched from the beach and paddled across and toured around the Pooley Bridge end of the lake. Taking in parts of the out-flowing! River Eamont, at the Northern end of this great lake.

Caution: The River Eamont is strong and shallow with submerged rocks!

Ullswater is a lake and valley of moods and majesty. The second largest lake in the English Lake District, it gently curves through eight miles of magnificent mountain scenery, and although popular with, and welcoming to tourists, the area has not been spoiled by overt commercialism and retains an ambience of peace and cheerfulness.

Narrative: This trail leads you to heaven and then some. Not to be confused with the recently published ‘official’ and more extensive trail found at the Information Centres. You will not be disappointed by the park facilities, including a beer and a take-a-way if you want it. The ‘beach’ is a kind of pebble affair, easy on the eye and maybe more importantly the hull of your boat ! This area is a magnet for canoeist and boaters in general. Please Note portage (carrying) is required to the waters edge, down a couple of hundred yards of well made up road. I cheated, roof rack, then parked up. Locked the boat to fence or tree at times during the day, not at night, although the park does have 24 hour security. The water is nothing short of fun, still at times then waves as a steamer passes by, clear, cold and plenty of it. There are lots of shallow areas around the Lake for the ‘put-in’, for the youngsters, and for training or practice too. The wind changes direction often and care and awareness of other craft is required ~ great for a ‘raft-up’ and mid-water gossip. Scenery, steamer pier, bays and bird-life, plus islands abound.
