BIG FOUR LANDING PARK: RYAN KING

A RECREATIONAL HUB FOR JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA

STUDIO PROFESSORS: CHRIS MARLOW / JOHN MOTLOCH

Jeffersonville, Indiana has come to a point in its history where it has an opportunity to connect with a major U.S. city in a way that has never before been possible. The Big Four Bridge that spans the Ohio River between Jeffersonville, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky has been refurbished as a pedestrian interstate transportation system. This project works to develop an area that invites people to the new interest of the area. This comprehensive project looks at the specific area for pedestrians that will connect people landing in Jeffersonville and connecting them with the Ohio River through the city in which they have landed. With this focus on pedestrian travel, the areas that have been addressed are the immediate connection of the bridge to the ground, a transition from that landing space to the waterfront, and the waterfront itself. The area is intended to become a destination for pedestrians of the kentuckiana area. it is a development intended to guide future developments for growth to me multi modal, accessible, and beautiful. It serves the many important aspects of the site and the context that surrounds it, and is hopefully a look towards what the future holds for the city of Jeffersonville.

Creating pedestrian access between these two cities will have positive effects on the economy, community recreation, and aesthetics of the waterfront city of Jeffersonville. This project brings potential for bringing beauty and access back to the Ohio River. It creates a beautiful area for experiencing the water much like the very successful Louisville project that the site will connect to. By increasing use of this underutilized area a beautification process can occur and bring new life to the area. The creation of a recreation area for Jeffersonville services the local residents and the many different types of visitors. Providing open space recreation for the users provides multiple uses for single spaces that can be used throughout the entire year. By bringing these people into this area of Jeffersonville local businesses will also see positive changes. The local businesses will soon see a diversifying customer base that is significantly larger than the current. This increase in business gives businesses more incoming funds to maintain and support both their own establishment and the local community. The development of this public park space creates new life within Jeffersonville. Jeffersonville will build off of this project and continue in its growth. The city can develop a diverse and unique personality that makes it a destination for people living on both sides of the Ohio River.
