Production

LANDSCAPE....black hole (Landscape images of fields, forests, towns with large black holes placed in random places on the picture)

IDEAS LANDSCAPE....architecture (Getting modern buildings and places around Leeds in a certain area and blurring the main focus point of the piece)

LANDSCAPE....mountain (Still landcape images of mountains in a district area to cover the whole amount of space)

Planning

For our project we have to create a set of images to cover the space of one square mile, it can be anywhere from a street to a landmark. My chosen topic for my photography for this brief is to shoot landscape images of streets and people which will be shot in black and white to get the vintage look but also experiemented in colour. My plan is to get as many photos as I need until I get the right shots. My chosen location will be where I think is best so places like Leeds City Centre but also outside places around Leeds like Brewery Wharf as I like its location and surroundings also needing a busy area is a good idea for this shoot. The idea is to cover my focus point of my image with a black circle or area just covered in full black, also another idea is for their face and features inclusing hands and legs to be covered in black to hide the identities of the person and to show that everyone isn’t the same and we are all different but also to not judge a book by its cover. I will be gathering photographs of groups of people and still people to get a veriety of shots.

Trent Parke (bio)

This is a piece from Trent Parke. In his pieces he photographs people which then with this certain design he chooses one of the people and either blurres them out or in this case turns them a full colour, usually black and white. My idea is inspired by people like Trent Parke in the sense of his techniques to have the main focus point covered with different colors. This certain image is quite strong, the positioning of the man in the frame is a clear focus point is very well placed. The best part is the uniqe factor of the shot as it is a completely normal scene of modelling but with this random man coloured in all white but also the shadows of the man full black behind him.

This is my second inspirational piece found by Trente Parke. This is a very different styled photo to the one above in sense that the one above is just of a normal scened photo but this one is made as a surrealism styled photo of people floating and falling. The image itself is very weird but well put together with the colors used and again with the main focus point covered in black, this is the type of image out of the two that I will be hoping to push my work towards.

Evaluation

This project is called One Square Mile. The idea behind the brief is to photograph an area that spreads out to a mile and get images from inside your selected mile. The location I decided to photograph was from Liberty Docks to Royal Armories in Leeds. The reason I decided to photograph down there is I feel it is a nice location to get images and was a nice day and didn’t feel like staying around Leeds City Centre. My idea was different to others I wanted to capture 5-10 images but the images I wanted was of people in the mile region either to approach them and ask them if I can take some images or on the sly. Then I wanted to twist the brief and have the people I photographed have their heads replaced with blackness (which was made using Photoshop CC). The idea behind the black heads is to hide people’s identities and for the viewer to guess the features with imagination. I had a few problems with this assignment which caused negative factors to the end results. One of the problems was that I had shot everything but lost my USB which contained the edits of the black faces and bodies but as I had lost it I had to re edit the photos which the second time wasn’t as good as my first edits as they were rushed. Another problem was my test shots, I feel they didn’t give me anything to go on in terms of the end result but this was solved by changing my idea from location shots only to then people out in location. The test shots themselves were very poor and was a matter of understanding what I wanted to produce but they were

tacky and poorly presented. The positives about this brief was I enjoyed shooting in new locations which was down at the docks as it was the first time I shot down there and enjoyed it. I also feel the quality of the photography at the end of the shoot came out very clear and looked good as final pieces. Even though the photography itself could have had more time spent on it I feel I got the most of what I had. Overall I enjoyed this project and thought my idea was a strong and good idea which brought unique ways to my photography. I would change certain aspects of my final images and if I didn’t lose my USB I feel the images would have attracted peoples attention a lot more but overall I am happy with the assignment outcome.
