PUBLISHERS’ LETTER Ten years ago, we started Annapolis Home Magazine with the intent to discover and share with readers the distinct architecture, design, and character of the Chesapeake Bay, greater Annapolis, and the Eastern Shore region. As Annapolis has close ties to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, we also strive to represent that connection. This issue of Annapolis Home continues that mission by presenting a magnificent garden and pool design, as seen on the cover—perfect for a homeowner who grows flowers and vegetables. And The High-Heeled Gardener reminds us that spring is the season for gardening in her inspiring column about the great power of chives. In these pages, you will find the beautiful interior of a home in Edgewater, whose fabulous porches and pool house make it the perfect second home. In contrast to the waterfront home, we offer an exclusive peek at an urbane modern home with clean, minimal lines and surfaces. People in our area travel often, so we enjoy sharing points of interest that are worth visiting around the country, and even around the world. In this issue, we feature the story behind Diego Rivera’s mural frescos in Detroit. This signature artistic achievement is one of the greatest of the 20th century, and well worth a trip to Detroit, just to see it.

1

One of the most anticipated exhibitions of 2020 is the retrospective of Donald Judd’s art. Presented by the Museum of Modern Art, the show runs through July 11, 2020. For artists, architects, designers, and everyone interested in art, this is an important exhibition to see. Judd is most often cast as one of the seminal inventors of “minimalism,” although he rejects the term as reductive. Nevertheless, the term is widely used and refers to artists in the 1960s who aimed to eliminate illusion, symbolism, and narrative in their art and to employ industrial materials in “real space.” Yet this description does not sufficiently account for Judd’s inventive, rigorous, and exuberant art. This exhibition is most definitely worth the trip to New York City to see. Learn more at moma.org.

A “sense of destination is what the owners of this Easton property wanted for their weekend retreat. With memories of vacations spent in New England, the couple hoped to recreate that same relaxed feeling at their home on the Tred Avon River. The site of an historical manor house dating to the mid-18th century, the 5,000 square foot home was updated in 1988 and sits on five acres with expansive views of the river. When the homeowners decided to put in place a master plan for the outdoor setting, they called on landscape architect Matt Rhoderick from McHale Landscape Design to marry their love of cottage style with clean lines and light colors.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 31

The stone on the pool, fountain, and wall add texture and color, including subtle blues and grays. Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 33

The pergola’s grand columns are reclaimed granite from New England with each one weighing 2,500 pounds.

Rhoderick, who had known the home’s previous owners, listened to his new clients’ vision and set out to plan out the project’s details and time frame. It was accomplished in just about two years, in part because the lady of the house was such an enthusiastic partner in the project, “taking ownership” of the process. “It was a lot of fun working with her,” says Rhoderick, recalling a time when his team installed a raised garden area, “and she took it from there,” creating such areas as a cutting garden and herb garden. The overall palette of the garden is green and white, but shades of pinks, blues, and yellows burst out from various viewpoints. Now, no matter where you look, there is something of visual interest blooming all year round. A fountain garden provides the soothing sound of moving water, further enhancing the waterfront setting, while a moon gate, with its special cut-out, offers another angle and view of the river as it flows toward Oxford.

34

Providing a counterpoint to the delicate flowers are eight-foottall reclaimed granite columns from New England, each weighing 2,500 pounds. Authentic railroad bridge trusses also speak to the storied history of the property. Rhoderick and the homeowners took their inspiration for the outdoor furnishings—such as the Adirondack Chairs—from the Walpole Outdoors catalogs. As with virtually all Chesapeake Bay projects, Rhoderick had to work within the guidelines that protect the environment while remaining mindful of the neighbors' vistas, careful not to block them. Landscaping is always a work in progress. This year, Rhoderick will begin the next phase as he resurfaces and copes the free-form swimming pool, tying together the chunky stone elements and bluestone accents found on the patio.

The cottage-style garden with a crisp white picket fence, bird feeder, and trellis has raised beds for herbs and flowers.

The moon gate adds a touch of whimsy to the garden.

Bursts of color abound with plants that attract pollinators.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 35

The potting shed with weathered coastal-style shingles and pitched roof doubles as a studio for the homeowner’s son.

Other textures can be found in the long gravel driveway with cobblestone borders. “It’s both formal and casual, and has an inviting, crunchy feel under your feet,” says Rhoderick. The homeowners not only wanted a retreat for themselves and their guests. They also wanted to create studio space for their son, an artist who draws inspiration from the landscape with its many creeks and coves, just as they do. This home exudes a certain Chesapeake-style beauty, composed of different hardscape and planting textures and hues that gleam in the warmer and longer twilights of our micro-region. At the same time, with its cozy fire pit reminiscent of cool New England evenings, its pergolas, arbors, and trellised walls that evoke coastal Nantucket, and profusion of colors, scents, and views that appeal to the senses, it not only references their beloved New England, it almost exceeds it. R E N OVAT I O N BY J E A N N E B L AC K B U R N | P H OTO G R A P H Y BY PAU L B U R K Washington, D.C. is known for its neoclassical architecture as well as its quaint neighborhoods lined with elegant row houses. When a public health executive who travels internationally recently purchased one, she saw its potential and envisioned an ultra-modern renovation. And this did not mean knocking down a few walls! “She requested a minimal, timeless modernism reflective of the spaces she sees in Europe,” says Richard Loosle-Ortega of KUBE Architecture in Washington, DC. Their plan was to completely reconfigure the two-story row house by adding a new third floor and a rear build-out, enlarging the living space by approximately 1200 square feet. There is an open floor plan on the main level, a master suite utilizing the entire second floor, and an added third floor for two guest bedrooms en suite.

However, they encountered a couple of logistical bumps in the road. “The client was living in Seattle at the time of construction,” says Loosle-Ortega. “Then the project was put on hold for almost a year because the owner extended her work contract there and did not want to leave a newly finished house sitting empty for that long.” In KUBE’s files, the project was called White Black Light, highlighting the three main design elements that unify the spaces. A neutral interior shell comprised of white walls and ceilings and light-colored floors wraps all spaces throughout the house. Black exposed ceiling joists over the dining room, ‘floating’ stairs in the main space, and an angular steel handrail carved into the wall add contrast and interest. Large glass windows bring natural light through all spaces, and interior walls have been removed to open views out to the

city, including a double-height space in the rear. In addition, the master bathroom features clerestory glass, and solar tubes have been inserted over the stairs. The next hurdle was the zoning restrictions. The master plan involved adding a third floor and bumping out the back. “What we needed to consider was the up, or as they call it in DC, the pop-up,” says LoosleOrtega, “and most pop-ups are considered intrusive into the urban fabric.” As this is the only house on that block that breaks with the established building height-line, they wanted it to be as unobtrusive as possible. “We decided to slope the addition back from the front to soften the impact,” Loosle-Ortega explains. “In sloping the front wall of the addition, we were able to treat it as a roof, then cladding it in standing seam metal while the two floors below are hardie panel and original brick, respectively. Breaking up the floors with different materials helps visually reduce the thirty-five-foot

A glass wall becomes a structural and artistic element and is true to the home’s minimal contours. height of the house. We were also asked by zoning to keep the pedimented window, which is an element on many of the homes on the block,” he adds. Challenges are ever-present in a project of this scope. “As in most of our work, the challenge is coordinating and executing the details that give a project its design personality,” says Loosle-Ortega. For instance, the exposed black ceiling joists on the main floor had to fall in line with the drywall cut-out for the stair railing that ran from the basement to the main level. The wall-hung stairs attached to the buried steel beam in the wall had to be engineered and executed correctly, too. Then, when the original contractor moved out of town, they had to hire someone else to finish the details.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 47

Planting the design firmly in the twenty-first century, technological elements were also incorporated. “The house is designed for passive energy: the open plan allows for crossventilation, all lights are LED, all paint is no-VOC, and the decking is composite (as opposed to wood), so it will last longer,” Loosle-Ortega explains. He also noted the addition of solar tubes (a type of reflective skylight) and the installation of dimmers on all major lights to save the life of the bulbs and electricity. Perhaps not surprisingly, some of the finishes sourced by KUBE for this residence are more typical of commercial spaces. “The exposed steel on the stairs and railings is not common in traditional homes but often used in commercial work and increasingly present in modern homes. Steel is also green,” Loosle-Ortega added, noting that it is low maintenance as compared with wood railings, which require more upkeep. Large windows are also more common in commercial work and truly modern homes, as is the exposed ductwork on the second floor. The large plate-glass windows at the stairs are a commercial feature that allows for a more minimal aesthetic. Now, the environment the homeowner returns to after traveling has a calm elegance, similar to the European aesthetic that she prefers. There is an optimism inherent in this inspiring space that, with its black, white, and light elements, seems to look forward rather than back, brightening up the block. AH

ANNAPOLIS HOME

BY ELIZABETH HEUBECK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERT RADIFERA

A soft yet engaging palette and plush furnishings ensure that the view takes center stage.

In the spacious living area, a furniture grouping of comfortable chairs becomes an intimate zone inviting conversation and card games.

A mindful combination of whites, grays, pale and teal blues pay homage to the tidewater tradition while adding just the right touch of drama.

ANNAPOLIS HOME

THE TRANSFORMATION OF THIS EXQUISITE WATERFRONT HOME began with the client’s simple request for a few recommendations regarding modest home repairs, recalls architect John Braithwaite of Atelier 11 Architects. However, as so often happens once exciting ideas and positive energy begin to flow between client and architect, the project started to take on much broader proportions than simply “touching up a couple of areas,” per the initial suggestions—eventually involving both renovations and additions to the original property. Atelier 11 designed a complete re-configuration of the back end of the home, enabling it to flow seamlessly into two generously-sized porches that look out onto the yard. And what a view! It includes an enticingly curvy pool surrounded by tasteful landscaping and leads to a welcoming new pool house that offers unobstructed views of a charming creek. For the interiors of the home and pool house, the homeowners turned to Jamie Merida Interiors based in Easton. So many waterfront homes default to “coastal cute”—think knock-you-out nautical blues, big fat stripes, and whimsical anchors. Not this one. Amanda Friend, a designer for the firm at the time, worked with the client to achieve a far more sophisticated design sense throughout the home.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 55

In the spacious pool house, a weathered round Gothic revival table is the perfect foil for an otherwise clean and modern space.

With lots of soft grays, pale blues, and pretty teals, the subtle color palette throughout the house and pool house creates a relaxed and peaceful vibe. It’s a fresh—and decidedly refreshing—take on traditional tidewater, observes Merida.

“YOU LOOK STRAIGHT OUT ONTO THE WATER AND POOL. THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL A B O U T.”

“You exhale when you walk through the door,” he says. The color palette promotes a feeling of relaxation, but the home’s unique accessories keep one’s senses fully engaged. This is particularly true of the splashes of eclectic and standout furniture choices. Barrel-back chairs, for instance, were custom cut down “just a hair” to allow them to fit comfortably around the dining room table. In the pool house, a weathered, English round Gothic revival table provides the perfect foil for an otherwise clean and modern space, says Merida. Carefully positioning the table with a window behind it, Merida set the window to frame the scenic trees in the distance—almost like a painting. But, this being a waterfront home enjoyed most fully in the summer, the gaze tends to travel outside. “You look straight out onto the water and pool. That’s what it’s all about,” Merida says.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 57

The pool and pool house echo the home’s relaxed, peaceful vibe.

Details make a home stand apart. And throughout this project, strict attention was paid to the smallest details—starting with renovations to the house and extending to additions built on the property. With their soft palettes and mindful appointments, both pool house and home speak the same design language, conveying personal warmth and comfort. Only with care and discipline can parallel visions such as these unfold. AH

The architect made modifications to the home’s eaves, adding copper details at the gables’ ends to make them more pronounced.

BY KYMBERLY TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN C. STONEHILL

Most professional writers require special conditions to practice their craft. Maya Angelou wrote her masterpieces in a hotel room, equipped with nothing except a dictionary, a bottle of sherry, and a Bible. After writing all day, W. H. Auden had a stiff vodka martini at 6:30 p.m. Lucie Lehmann, columnist, editor, and author of Dishing Up Maryland, knew just what she required—peace, water, and a touch of the wild. She found all three when she bought a vintage cottage on the Severn River in Winchester Beach, a woodsy enclave in Annapolis. After substantial remodeling by Lundberg Builders, the cottage has become a writer’s retreat, with window walls lining the entire length of the living room and part of the kitchen, which has a built-in breakfast bar/writing desk. The many personal touches include a “catio,” a patio with extra-wide shelves for her felines to relax upon. Lehmann’s cats settled in just fine, but she faced a big problem—the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room needed some kind of covering. How does one accomplish this without sacrificing the view, which, to a writer, is almost as important as food? Early on in the project, during the construction phase, she called Margaret Blunt, who had helped her decorate the interior of her previous home.

Vol. 11, No. 2 2020 73

When re-upholstering all of the pre-existing furnishings in the living room, the interior design team chose special fabrics to mirror the homeowner’s love of greens and blues.

Blunt, owner of Sew Beautiful, notes that finding the right window treatments for a waterfront home is always challenging. After conferring with project designer Ronnie Harmon and project manager Amy Publicover, she designed floor to ceiling sheer window treatments with precise stitching, a narrow, embroidered pinstripe, and lightweight composition. “The sheer fabric for the draperies was chosen for its subtleness, not only to frame the view but also to provide a quiet backdrop allowing the outside to blend with the colorful blues and greens of the interior furnishings,” she says. When closed, the curtains allow filtered light into the room and permit partial views. The diaphanous panels are subtle conduits of information. Lehmann knows what the river is like just by watching the curtains move. “The wind rises from the river, carrying the shape of water,” she observes. Sometimes the panels barely move. At other times, they billow freely, ushering the wind inside. The window treatments work well. However, Lehmann wondered what to do with the rest of the space. Though the curtains were a neutral, she did not want a monotone home. “Color is very important to me; I can’t imagine a black and white world. I crave

it in my own house,” she says, adding that she is especially inspired by nature’s greens and blues. Blunt and her team stepped right in. “It was a hard room to furnish as it is oddly shaped… we focused on coordinating the fabrics,” recalls Blunt. They reupholstered the settee in bold chartreuse and integrated shades of green and blue into fabrics for the couch and chairs. Lehmann’s retreat has an added dimension: living color. She landscaped her yard with lush native plantings and strategically positioned birdbaths, custom feeders, bluebird houses, and an osprey platform around the premises. The sheer window treatments allow her to observe the natural world that sometimes merges with her own. Woodpeckers, goldfinch, wrens, and seven bluebirds cross her vision daily like beautiful thoughts. All seven bluebirds perch on the railing to greet her daily, she says. Tiny Buffalo Head ducks dive merrily in the icy waters just beyond her dock. There is so much drama and so many wildlife families to follow; it may be hard to write, or rather, in Lehmann’s case, perhaps hard not to. AH

The High-Heeled Gardener

Chive On

EASY SEEDS TO PLANT NOW IN THE HERB GARDEN | BY KYMBERLY TAYLOR

March is a magical month for gardeners. Despite a few chilly days, Spring is here, and it is time to start planting seeds directly outside! I have found that the common chive (Allium schoenoprasum) and garlic chive (Allium tuberosum) are some of the easiest herbs to grow from seed with stellar results, and they light up the herb garden with fabulous edible flowers. Chives are old-fashioned perennials, with distinct clumps and blossoms that reach for the sky–an early harbinger of good times. The lavender blossoms of the common chive and white blossoms of the garlic chive last for weeks and look terrific in salads and with vegetables. You can also create napkin rings with them. Simply loop a single long chive stem around a rolled-up napkin and use the flower to fasten in place.

You will see beautiful sea-green shoots in about two weeks, and, if you do not trim or harvest, blooms should appear in another three weeks. For casual cooking, trim as needed from the sides, snipping from the base rather than cutting from the top down. After sixty days, harvest outright by cutting stems down to two inches above the soil. Your chives will spring back to life and can be harvested two more times throughout the season, generally six weeks apart.

It’s simple to get started. Between March and April 1st, clear two little plots of ground in a sunny spot in your herb garden, one for the garlic chives, and another for the common variety. Enrich your soil with a natural compost such as Leafgro®. Plant seeds about six to eight inches apart, a quarter-inch deep, cover, and water gently with a mister for about 10 days. I like to plant mine in the shape of crescent moons for a nice flow of color.

You will love this humble yet hardworking herb that will continue to grow until the first frost in the fall. Without a doubt, it builds confidence for those who are new to planting from seed and is a staple of a cheerful garden.

Chives taste like delicate green onions and add flavor to salads, meats, soups, stews, and savory baked goods. Garlic chives have a subtle garlic flavor. Both make a wonderful appetizer when minced and spread upon farmer’s bread topped with whipped cream cheese.

WORT H T HE T R IP SEE T H E E X T R AO R DINARY DIEGO R IVER A MURALS IN DETROIT B Y R O B E R T H AY W O O D Traveling from Annapolis to Detroit is worthwhile just to view one of the greatest artistic achievements in American history. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, when so many were without work, Edsel Ford, President of the Ford Motor Company, commissioned Mexican artist Diego Rivera to paint a largescale mural in the interior courtyard of the Detroit Institute of Art. Ford, the epitome of the wealthy industrial capitalist, was patronizing an artist who espoused Marxism. As the subject matter of the mural—industry in Detroit—included the automobile industry, Rivera spent several months touring and researching the Ford River Rouge Complex, utterly fascinated by the assemblyline processes and the technological sophistication of the machinery. In his autobiography, My Art, My Life, Rivera adopted a reverent, almost romantic tone when describing the rhythmic sounds of the plant and its workers as a “wonderful symphony which came from his factories where metals were shaped into tools for men's service. It was a new music, waiting for the composer with genius enough to give it communicable form.” 82

ANNAPOLIS HOME

Rivera spent eight months painting the murals in fresco, a complex painting technique that fuses paint with plaster; this is the same technique Michelangelo applied when painting the Sistine Chapel. The murals consist of 27 different panel paintings and two large-scale murals. The center of the north wall (shown above) portrays workers manufacturing Ford’s famous 1932 V8 engine. In this incredible study on the relationship between workers and machines, Rivera’s mural depicts the machine parts as strangely monstrous, anthropomorphic creatures, and the workers working in perfect harmony, yet held captive by industry. The Detroit Industry Murals are exceptional for their artistic invention and skill, as well as for the rich imagery that shifts uncertainly between idealization and critique. While in Detroit, you can also visit the Henry Ford Museum and take the Ford Rouge Factory Tour.
