STUDIO AIR 2016, SEMESTER 1, TUTORS: Sonya STUDENT NAME: Ryan Rodjanapiches STUDENT NO. 665180

Sel f Introduc tion My Name is Ryan Rodjanapiches and I am currently studying Environment majoring in Architecture and in my third year. I am initially from Bangkok, Thailand but I have travelled around alot and currently I am in Melbourne. For me I found out that Melbourne is a very fascinating place as the culture and the architecture here is very diverse. My passion has always been designing as I usually have so many ideas in my head. At first i have expressed my ideas through my hand and my model making but then Digital design have been introduced to me. Digital design is a very foreign concept to me at first and as i have progress throughout my study period, I have grew fond of it. I have found out that knowing more method of designing can help me expressed what i have in my head further than what i can initially do. Studio Air is my third design that I have enrolled in. I Started from Earth and then water. I have found that Air is a very free and complex compared to the other two studio where I feel like it is restricted. Architecture for me, is one of the most interesting factor on earth. It is an art that can be projected to everyday living. Moreover, as I progressed throughout my years, I have develop my idea to be able to consider environmental factor and a sustainable lifestyle. I think this is very important as we have harm many environmental factor so we need to find a way to give back or atleast contribute to it.

CONCEPTUALISATION

A periodi x S ystem Throughout the century our technology have been developing constantly without stopping. With this happening, more and more alternatives materials and techniques have been introduced and developed in order to improve architecture, to make it more simple, creative, stable and sustainable.

Introduction to Aperiodix Aperiodix system is tiling systems which carry a concept of overlaying intersection patterns to create unique tilings. This was designed by Ben Sandell, Situ Studio, Geoff Sosebee and Eric Weil for Oso Industries. They use the concept of joining geometric tiles with a decorated secondary form. Moreover, this system adds a third pattern layer with the external structure (Figure 1).

Figure 1.2: 4 Types of tiles 2

Design Product The surface of each concrete tile has a diverse undulating structure and it is decorated with a pattern that when cemented together will join to create a distinct, interacting patterns. These tiles are fibre reinforced concrete and are available in four colors. Each Tiles cover .65 sq. ft.and the gap of each tiles are 0.125 inch wide (Figure 2).

Inspiration This system came out while they have been researching into different tiling patterns used in Islamic architecture. Moreover, it uses the concept of overlaying and intersecting patterns to create unique tilings

CONCEPTUALISATION

With the uses of this design a more innovative and sustainable way of design maybe achieve. For instance these tiles system might be further researched and developed so that less or recycled materials can be used to built a wall. Through innovative thought and technology, more alternative will be opened for us to achieve and we could explore further into how we developed architecture in the future.

T he Santa fe Opera House

The Santa Fe Opera House is designed by Polshek Partnership Architects or now Ennead architects. It is located North of santa Fe in New mexico. It is a striking, leading edge and open air theatre which it has an elements of contemporary design aesthetics while using a materials of a traditional building. It has won many awards such as the NY AIA Design Award.

For me Personally, I find this building very fascinating. They have designed and built this building in a very simple approach however, the building comes out as one of the most futuristic building. Moreover, the concept of cooperating internal and external atmosphere together in an opera house is very interesting. 6

CONCEPTUALISATION

Building Design The roof of the building have been design as a wave form that is suspended from a skeletal structure of white steel masts and tension rods to give a sense of a tent. However, the roof on the orchestra and balcony have been designed to act as an giant acoustic reflector. One of the unique structure is the new roof which is 50% heavier than the previous one inorder joined the existing gap between the main and balcony roofs. Lastly is the Steel wind splinter rails installed along the roof edges and wind baffles in order to diffuse strong incoming winds and decrease weather related distractions.

Fabric Tower Introduction The Fabric Tower is a 150,000 sft residential tower designed by a company called Atelier Manferdini which was owned by Elena Manferdini in the year of 2008. It is located in Guiyang, China.

Design The Design intent is a response from the site natural landscape and its culture. This building express contemporary, progressive, creative and the vision of local traditions. Using computer aided design software to assist to help them achieve the building design concept.

This is one of the good example where computation has played a major role in designing and solving various problems. Using computation aid, rooms for alternative design method have been opened up. In this case combining fabric with framework to achieve their goals. These programs also allowed us to calculate something that human is unable to comprehend by themself.

CONCEPTUALISATION

Lotte Super Tower Introduction Lotte Super Tower is a 70m square base and 40m circle diameter at the top have been design by Neil Katz which he is an architect working with SOM (Skidmore Owning & Merrill LLP). Katz has been involved in computation design which he has suggest solutions to geometrically complex issue in design process. This tower is situated in Seoul, Korea.

Design The building used a cast-inplace concrete core with a steel diagrid shell which the building have been expressed by uniting the curtain wall. The enclosure system have been design in order to fuse the complex diagrid geometry with the curtain wall.

Computation Contribution This project basic structure have been constructed using parametric program in AutoCAD. They have used computation to calculate the solar incidence angle analysis for the building which this shows the analysis of the sulight in each seasons. This people to be able to analyse solar penetration for the whole building throughout the year.

This building emphasise how computation can really be useful inorder to design a good building. Not only the shapes of the building but also about how the environment may effect the building which in this case is how much sunlight is exposed to the building.

Composition/ Generation 10

CONCEPTUALISATION

Seroussi Pavilion

Introduction Seroussi Pavilion is a self-modifying patterns of vectors based on electromagnetic fields. The lead designer for this project is Alisa Andrasek. This project follow the logic of attraction and repulsive of the trajectories computed in plan which is then lifted via series of structurak microarching sections through different frequencies of sine function.

Methods For this pavilion, six different geometrical systems we used for design. The use of algorithmatic and parametric design is used as a foundation inorder for the pavilion to materialise and adapt to the site condition. The used of computerisation also assist on the distribution of lighting, shading and views of the site. By repeating this process again and again they manage to grow the pavilion out of it.

I think this is a very good example of how generation can play a role in a designing process. This buildng's design concept clearly shown the process of computation generation and how a very imginative method maybe possible to applied to the field of architecture.

CONCEPTUALISATION 11

Stressedskins Steel Pavilion

Introduction Stressed Skin is an architectural research project designed by the collaboration between CITA, Monash University,DTU Mekanik and Bollinger and Grohmann Ingenieure. The concept of this project is to use new technologies to explore a very old ideas through easily bent materials such as cold working steel to form a strong structure.

Design Method The Pavilion uses calculation and simulation methods that control the geometric form to generate what the result is going to be, the forming of the steel and to choose the specific materials into the design. Its then transferred to the 3D computer models which instructed the robot to formed each pannels. Each panels relates to each other and also directly to the forces exerted within and the need of stable condition. This project surprisingly show how composition shift to generation. This composition have used alot of computer generation to not only for the design but to calculate the load of the less regid material panels so it doesnt collapse.

a4. Conclusion Part A of the study is about how designs have changed with the influence of computerisation for modern uses. In the past, people have faced numerous problems conflicting with their design. However, with the help of today's technologies, we are able to achieve more. Computation plays an important role in today architectural design industries. In a designer perspective, our responsibility is to reflect what we did wrong in the past and contribute in designing structure to support achieving a better future. These example that I have chosen have used technologies to incorporate with their designing approach and they have achieved something fascinating.

a5. Learning Outcome Throughout the past 3 weeks I have develop a better understand about computer design. At first, it is a very hard concept and most of the time I have no idea what I am doing but as I look and learned more, I have found that computation design is very convenient. It is one of most advanced alternative method for all designers to be using in the present. However, computation design also alters the design concept used in modern buildings. It is not as natural as using a pen or pencil on a paper. Hopefully, when I finished this course, I would be able to understand computerisation a lot more and enhance it further in my designs in the future.
