North American Junior Red Angus Event 2015 Legacy Heifer Project Application

The NAJRAE Legacy Heifer Project is a mentoring program. This is where a young boy or girl is partnered with an experienced Red Angus breeder in hopes that the junior may learn from that breeder and grow within the Red Angus breed. This is a way for a younger generation of future Red Angus breeders can learn from the older generation, and the older generation can get to know a younger junior who is just entering the breed, through the management of a Red Angus female. As with any partnership there will be management decisions to be made concerning the care of this animal. In hopes of making this growing project the best it can be some changes have been made this year. Below are the exact details of the project and the details of the partnership: 1. Shuey Stock Farms will donate 1 Fall-born Red Angus females for the Legacy Heifer Scholarship.

The selection of the recipient will be chosen at the 2015 NAJRAE. At that time 50% ownership and 100% possession of this female will be transferred to the selected Junior. The junior will maintain sole possession of this female until the 2016 NAJRAE. Shuey Stock Farms will maintain the other 50% interest.

2. Shuey Stock Farms will serve as a mentor for 1 year to the recipient. Shuey Stock Farms will provide insurance on this female for this one year duration. They will also provide "low BW heifer bull" semen to be used for the breeding of this female if desired by the recipient.

Breeding decisions on the female will be made jointly by Shuey Stock Farms and the Recipient with the Recipient presenting his/her breeding suggestions.

3. The recipient must contact a member of the Shuey family at least once a month for an update on how the female is doing.

4. Shuey Stock Farms will assist the Junior with the National Association in terms of “Total Herd Reporting” in hopes that this is of assistance in the future as he/she builds their herd.

5. The recipient will cover all costs in terms of AI service, and all necessary healthcare of this female. The recipient will service this animal to calve at around 2 years of age. Pregnancy checks must be performed by a licensed Veterinarian.

6. The junior selected must be able to attend the 2016 NAJRAE with this female. At this time if breeding decisions go as planned the female with be a “3rd Stage bred Senior Yearling”.

Members of the Shuey Stock Farm family (Scott or Ryan Shuey) will perform a pregnancy check at this time to once again confirm pregnancy.

7. The Junior Recipient will give a short presentation during the banquet over his/her experiences with the project. He/she may also use this time to demonstrate their sales talk ability leading up to the selling of this female during the benefit auction.

8. Following pregnancy confirmation 100% possession and interest in this female will be sold at the 2016 NAJRAE Benefit Auction to the highest bidder. Possession and Interest of the female will transfer immediately following payment to the NAJRAE. 9. 50% of the funds generated from the sale of the female will go directly to the Junior Recipient that has been managing the female over the past year as a scholarship. The other 50% of the funds will be donated back into the NAJRAE Senior Scholarship Fund

10. In the event that the Junior Recipient wishes to keep the female he/she must purchase the female during the benefit auction. Then, instead of receiving 50% of the funds raised by the female, he/she will receive the female instead. He/she still must pay the other 50% of what she brings at auction to the NAJRAE to be added to the Senior Scholarship Fund.

11. In the unlikely event that the female turns up as non-fertile/does not breed after attempted AI services and bull exposure the female will be sold at a local salebarn as a cull female. 100% of the funds generated from this will be donated to the NAJRAE Senior Scholarship Fund.

12. A full contract of these details will be typed up and available at the 2015 NAJRAE. The Junior Recipient and his/her parents, a Shuey Stock Farms Representative, and a member of the NAJRAE Senior Board will sign this contract as a binding agreement to make sure that this Project goes as smooth as possible.

Qualifications: 1. Any boy or girl ages 6-14 (as of January 1, 2015) who is a member of the NAJRAE and has not previously been awarded the Legacy Heifer may apply.

2. The application must include 1 letter of recommendation. This letter of recommendation must come from any of the five categories listed below: a. 4-H Club Leader, County Agent, Beef Livestock Association Advisor b. School teacher, superintendent, principal c. Minister or Church Youth Advisor d. Red Angus Breeder These may NOT include the applicant’s parents, NAJRAE board members, or any member of the Shuey family. Individual’s writing letters of recommendations should include their association with the applicant, and a candid evaluation of the applicant’s abilities, background, character, strengths, weaknesses, etc..

Procedure 1. Those interested in applying must contact Ryan Shuey either by email, phone, or text for him to email you an application. He can be reached at 712-621-0959 or shueyr1@iastate.edu. Please leave your email address in the message, and he will email you the application ASAP. 2. The application and letter of recommendation will be due back to Ryan Shuey by 6/8/2015 at Midnight. Please email the application back to him at the email address listed above. Please also have whoever is writing the letter of recommendation email him directly as well with the name of the applicant in the subject line. Ryan will send a confirmation email back ASAP saying that the completed application was received. No late applications will be accepted.

3. Following receiving all applications Ryan will compile these applications together and they will be sent out to a selected group on individuals for evaluation and ranking. a. This selected group of individuals has not been selected yet. This will be done by 5/25/2015 and announced on the NAJRAE Facebook Page. They will more than likely include previous parents of recipients of the Legacy Heifer Project, Red Angus Breeders, Industry Leaders, etc..

b. If there is conflicting interest between an applicant and an evaluator (relative) that evaluator will relinquish their spot on the selection committee.

4. This committee will all be asked to rank their top 8 applicants and to send those rankings back to Ryan Shuey. Ryan Shuey will then take each of those rankings, and share them with the rest of the selection committee. At that point the selection committee by conference call will select 3-4 applicants to ask back for official interviews during the 2015 NAJRAE in Grand Island. The information on who was selected for interviews will be announced on the NAJRAE Facebook page and by personal email from Ryan Shuey as soon as it becomes available.

5. The selection committee will perform these interviews when possible during the NAJRAE with the 3-4 selected applicants. Following those interviews a decision will be made on the selected individual. The announcement will be made during the award ceremony.

6. Following the announcement the Junior selected must sign the contract as mentioned above.

He/she may present small amendments to such contract if he/she feels fit as long as it does not interfere with the major details listed above in a major way.
