A FAVORITE TRADITION!

Mayor's Message "Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties." - Abraham Lincoln

REMEMBRING THIS IMPORTANT DATE July 4th is our most important patriotic holiday.

We are the only country with a known birthday; other countries have no idea how they emerged. July 4th put our country on the road to freedom and life as a new country. We think of this day as a day of remembering our freedom, not as a right to do as we please, but an opportunity to do what is right. Old Glory flies in our midst to honor those who fought to protect it and serves as a reminder of the sacrifice they made, some even their lives. They are the heroes we honor when we think of freedom. Ronald Regan stated that “Democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.” Abraham Lincoln stated, “Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.” The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Independence Day goes back to July 2nd, when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From that day to the present day, America has celebrated the birth of Independence with festivities such as parades, fireworks, concerts and family gatherings. It has been a long standing holiday celebrated with Cherry Days in North Ogden.

It is important that we never forget the importance of this date and its meaning in our lives. It was the beginning of the gift of freedom we all cherish. The early colonists and declaration signers recognized the inspiration of the hand of Providence in the creation of this great document. George Washington said, “The adoption of the Constitution will demonstrate as visible the finger of Providence as any possible event in the course of human affairs can ever designate it.” Daniel Webster said, “I regard the Constitution as the work of the purest patriots and wisest statesmen that ever existed, aided by the smiles of a benignant Providence…; it almost appears a Devine interposition in our behalf.” Our forefathers didn’t come to this country to find soil for their ploughs or any other economic advantage; they came for liberty and freedom for their souls. It is our duty as present-day citizens to unite for the same reason. I say that because I have been in nations where the people suffer from oppression and have no freedom or purpose in life. We need to understand and be aware that this country will remain the land of the free only if it is the home of the brave. I hope we kindle a feeling of gratitude for our freedom and for those who have defended it in the past and those who are defending it now. This great Constitution has weathered the storms of the past. It will continue to do so in the future if we stand up for our freedom and what it stands for. Let us enjoy this great holiday and our celebration here in North Ogden.

Happy Fourth of July! -Brent Chugg, Mayor of North Ogden

National Anthem Kirk Chugg

Mark Daniels

Kirk Chugg was born and raised in North Ogden. In fact, North Ogden has always felt like home regardless of where his travels have taken him. For generations, Kirk’s family have raised their families in Weber County, all the way back to Pioneer times. Now, he lives in the shadow of old Ben Lomond like they used to.

Mark has been the Theatre Arts teacher at Weber High School for 14 years and has been involved in the performing arts his entire life. He has a Master’s Degree in Educational Theatre production from Central Washington University with a Bachelor’s Degree from Weber State.

Kirk and his wife, Carin, have four beautiful children. He owns and runs his own successful custom clothing company that he started in 2012. Kirk is passionate about service work and enjoys involving his children in working with different charities. In late 2018, when the organization Follow the Flag flew the giant American flag in Coldwater Canyon, Kirk helped organize the talented skills and expertise of many volunteers that were required to hang the flag. Now, a team has been formed in North Ogden. With the help of many of our friends and neighbors, a second large flag has now been made that will call North Ogden home for future generations. Kirk has since been asked to serve on the executive board for Follow the Flag. He is hopeful that patriotism and the love of our country can flourish and pass through the generations of our communities. Additionally, he hopes that our children might know of the sacrifices and blessings they have been given by those who have gone before.

He also loves playing Ebenezer Scrooge in SCROOGE, A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Terrace Plaza Playhouse each holiday season. Mark loves teaching and directing at Weber High school. This last year, he directed the Utah High School premiere of Disney’s NEWSIES and an exciting production of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE. Mark loves living in North Ogden and is proud to be part of this amazing community.

2018 Miss Northern Utah Navy Humphreys I can't believe my 'Year of Service' is coming to as close. Where to even begin? Keeping this as short and concise as possible, I could never give enough of the Thank You's to everyone who has helped me to this point.

Beginning with my parents, thank you for raising me to believe that my dreams were always within reach. Work hard, stay kind, and what is meant to happen will happen is what I learned from you.

Miss Northern Utah 2108

On top of that, I am so glad that the Miss America Organization and the Miss North Ogden/Miss Northern Utah Scholarship Program fell into place for me! I have been able to meet so many amazing people that are helping pave my stepping stones to pursue my goals. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities I've had for my Social Impact Initiative, STEM From Your Comfort Zone, where I empower young women in STEM fields; STEM standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

I would also not be here if it weren't for the mentors I had through Weber Country District who pushed me to always do better and be better through Project Lead-the-Way. Thank you to my Director, Hannah Goodrich, who has been there for me every step of the way to guide me in the right direction. Thank you to my bonus sisters, Miss North Ogden, Miss North Ogden's Outstanding Teen, and my cute Little Miss Northern Utah. I'm so lucky to have these amazing women in my life. Thank you to my family and friends, who have been the support system I've needed through everything. And, finally, thank you to our wonderful community, who have shown nothing but love to me during my year as Miss Northern Utah. I can't wait to see what the next chapter of my life entails, but, I can assure you, I wouldn't have had any of it without this program.

2018 Miss North Ogden Winners Rachel Alder My time as Miss North Ogden 2018 has changed the person I am, and the woman I am becoming. This experience has pushed me so far outside my comfort zone I didn’t even know it was possible, but that stretch, that stretch made me grow.

I met the most incredible people in this community and I learned life lessons that impacted the core of who I am. I traveled to Africa with seven amazing teen girls and we learned about love and happiness. We also learned the difference between a need and a want, and that the root of true happiness is love.

Miss North Ogden 2108

My social impact initiative is Choose Your Own Statistic; Breaking Toxic Cycles. I’ve spent my year spreading this platform, not only here in our city, but also across the state and multiple countries. I’ve been able to share this message in Ghana and Togo, and even Dubai. These messages range from simple conversations in our schools and community to a workshop in Africa or to my time with inmates weekly at the prison. My efforts do not end the night I pass on my crown. I will continue my work daily and strive to let every

What a year to remember! I have loved every minute of being Miss North Ogden’s Outstanding Teen. My platform is “Get Hooked in a Book” and I had many opportunities to share my love of reading. Some highlights included accompanying Weber School District Superintendent Jeff Stephens to present the Superintendent Awards, reading and donating books to dozens of classrooms, and assisting with the Davis School District Authors Event. I love to sing and really enjoyed the many invitations I received to perform and represent

human know we have the personal power to change the course of our life. If you are facing a cycle or statistic you don’t want, you have the power to change that. Sometimes all we need is to give ourselves permission. My life changed when I realized I didn’t have to be bad. Regardless of the circumstances we come from, we can choose change. I choose change. Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes I have to choose daily, even hourly and sometimes I forget, or choose to not choose. But tomorrow I get to start again. My hero, Brenè Brown, said: “We can’t look at the arena with the mentality that I’m going to go in there only when I am bulletproof and when I am perfect. The truth is that never happens, but even if it were possible to reach that point and go in, that’s not what we want to see. We want to see authenticity. Real. Vulnerable. We want to root for the underdog and we want people to dare greatly.” At the beginning of my year, I said true beauty has nothing to do with pigment and everything to do with the heart. North Ogden, it’s been an honor sharing my heart with you this year.

North Ogden. I especially loved performing for the Prevent Child Abuse of Utah Gala and appreciated learning ways I could better help protect our youth from abuse. I also enjoyed singing the national anthem at the Chalk it Up color run and other events to raise money for schools. I was able to co-host Good Things Utah and perform a song from my recent music video. You’ll have to check out my YouTube Channel: just search Jaycee Dunyon. Thank you for such a wonderful year and a huge thank you to Hannah Goodrich for making it such a positive experience!

Future phases will complete the interior of the building as well as install seating and additional amenities. In 2018 the City produced a sold-out show of Once On This Island at the facility. This year we have a performing arts camp scheduled for July more information can be found at www.northogdencity.com > Recreation > Summer Camps.

COMMUNITY BAND R.A.M.P. also sponsors the North Ogden Community Band. With over 40 members and growing, the band performs at events throughout the year including Cherry Days. Participants bring their own instruments. Do you play? We need you! We need band instruments of all kinds and welcome your interest in joining with us. We are sponsored by North Ogden City, but you don’t need to be a resident to join. There are no auditions and no fees. We just ask that you have had at least high school or equivalent playing experience in the past or present. See www.northogdencity.com > Residents > Community Band for practice and music details.

Weber County R.A.M.P. receives one penny for every $10.00 purchase. This funding goes toward new and existing facilities for recreation, arts, museums and parks to benefit all Weber County Residents.

Children's Safety Keeping Children Safe During Cherry Days Once again, North Ogden residents and businesses are getting ready for Utah’s GREATEST Fourth of July celebration known as Cherry Days! During this exciting time, fun-filled activities will be available from sunrise to sundown for all to enjoy. From a 5K Fun Run/Walk and Kiwanis Breakfast to parades, festivals in the park, shows, and a grand finale with concert and fireworks, there is sure to be enough fun for everyone. Each year, however, safety concerns regarding children continue to arise. According to the North Ogden Police Department, the two greatest safety concerns they encounter are: 1) Lost children, and 2) Children running into the road. Parents and guardians can play a vital role in keeping their children safe by following these simple steps:

 LOST CHILDREN: a. Have children wear a name tag with a contact’s cell phone number. b. Make sure that children know their parents’ names, phone number, and home address. c. Take a picture of your child before the parade begins, showing their clothes or costume. d. Choose a designated meeting spot, in case of separation during an emergency.

 CHILDREN RUNNING INTO THE ROAD: a. Instruct children to stay off the road during the parade. Candy and other treats will be handed out by walkers along the parade route, instead of thrown from floats.

“Close parental supervision is encouraged to help alleviate both of these safety concerns.” -Paul Rhoades, North Ogden City Detective

b. Help children to avoid “parade chocking,” or encroaching further and further into the parade route. c. Teach children to respect and follow the instructions of police officers and other security personnel.

Let’s ensure that this year’s North Ogden Cherry Days festivities are fun AND safe for everyone! North Ogden Cherry Days | 2019 |
