DON'T MISS THE PARADE ON JULY 4TH!
Mayor's Message "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation forevermore!" - Oliver Wendell Holmes CELEBRATING OUR INDEPENDENCE The Fourth of July - also
known as Independence Day, has been a federal holiday since 1941. Independence Day goes back to July 2nd, when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From that day to the present day, America has celebrated the birth of American Independence with festivities such as parades, fireworks, concerts, and family gatherings. It has been a long standing holiday celebrated with Cherry Days in North Ogden. It is important that we never forget the importance of this date and its meaning in our lives. It was the beginning of the gift of freedom we all cherish and recognize what it means in our personal lives. The early colonists and signers recognize the inspiration of the hand of Providence in the creation of this great document. George Washington said, “The adoption of the Constitution will demonstrate as visible the finger of Providence as any possible event in the course of human affairs can ever designate it.” Daniel Webster said, “I regard the Constitution as the work of the purest patriots and wisest statesmen that ever existed, aided by the smiles of a benignant Providence…; it almost appears a Devine interposition in our behalf.” It all began with the initial battles of the Revolutionary War that broke out in April 1775. A
few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain. By the middle of the following year many more colonists had come to favor independence thanks to the growing hostility against Great Britain. Severing our relationship with Great Britain didn’t come easy, and succeeding battles continued into the 1800’s in defense of this nation to become independent. We owe a deep gratitude to these early colonists who sacrificed much including their lives to establish our freedom. President Ronald Regan said, “Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God – given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should.” I hope we kindle a feeling of gratitude for our freedom and for those who have defended it in the past and those who are defending it now. This great Constitution has weathered the storms of the past and it will continue in the future if we stand up for our freedom and what it stands for. Let us enjoy this great holiday and our celebration here in North Ogden.
-Brent Chugg, Mayor of North Ogden

Speaker
National Anthem Martin McKinnie
I would like to thank everyone that extended this invitation to me to speak at our 4th of July celebration, and to all of you that work to make the city of North Ogden such a great place to live. Thank you so much. My name is Martin McKinnie. I was born on the 4th of July and feel perfectly suited for the occasion. I was born with bright red hair and blue eyes, and I have had a truly patriotic personality, a reverence for the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and everything for which this country stands. I was born outside of Detroit, Michigan in the small town of Dearborn. Detroit, at the time, was one of the most productive cities in the world. I worked at the Ford Motor Company, building automobile and truck engines just after high school, and instead of being drafted into the Army, I chose to join the U.S. Navy and see the world. I was trained as a dental technician, both chair-side and prosthetics, and instead of seeing the world I was transferred to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, CA. and trained in field medicine as a medical corpsman. I then served with the 5th Marines at a small combat base southwest of DaNang in the Republic of Vietnam. I served my country honorably for five years and was medically retired in 1972. I worked in the dental industry as a dental ceramist for 40 years and retired in 2012. My wife and I moved to North Ogden in 2006 only to find out that we have the best neighbors in the world. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I'm honored to be in service to God, my country, and my fellow man.

Grand Marshal of the Cherry Days Parade Lynn and Sharon Muirbrook
Lynn and Sharon Muirbrook have lived in North Ogden for forty-four years and their roots run deep. Sharon's great grandparents John and Rachael (Roylance) Woodfield were two of the original settlers of North Ogden. Lynn was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. He attended Ben Lomond High School and Weber College. He worked for the I.R.S. for thirteen years, obtained his real estate license and has worked as a real estate agent, broker and developer since. Early in his life he was taught that "your rewards in life are in direct proportion to the service you render to others." Lynn's service has included four years as North Ogden Mayor, eight years North Ogden Councilman, and twelve years on North Ogden Planning Commission. He has been an Adult Boy Scout volunteer for over 40 years and is a Silver Beaver recipient. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Weber County Foster Care, Weber County Health, Weber County Dispatch, Weber County Sewer, Utah State Home Builders Association, Northern Wasatch home builders
Association and Utah Peace Officer Standards Council. Sharon Staker Muirbrook grew up in the small farming community of Taylor, in Weber County. She graduated from Weber High School. Sharon had three brothers and wonderful parents that taught her at an early age to work hard and to appreciate a good harvest. Sharon has worked for the Utah State Road Commission, as well as working several years as a substitute teacher. Lynn and Sharon were co-owners of Ogden's Property management, which created jobs for many people including their own children who worked and put themselves, through college. Sharon served for four years in the Auxiliary Presidency of the Utah League of Cities and Towns and one. year as the President. Sharon's main focus and joy in life has been her family, home and serving in her church. Lynn & Sharon have served in their church in many capacities, for over three years they enjoyed serving together as tour guides at the Conference Center in SLC, and they just recently finished serving three years as full-time missionaries in the Logan Utah Mission. In December, Lynn and Sharon will celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary. They are the proud parents of four sons and three daughters. They currently have twentytwo "awesome grandchildren" and four "fun-loving great-grandchildren." The Muirbrooks love living in North Ogden with its beauty and good people they both agree it has been the perfect place to raise their family.

2017 Miss North Ogden Winners Abigail Laing Hello All!
In case you haven’t run into me yet, my name is Abigail Laing and I have spent the past year serving as your Miss North Ogden. During this year, there has been a quote that has seen me through it all: “Start each day with a grateful heart.” With the end of my year fast approaching, I wanted to give a big thank you to all my new friends in North Ogden and Pleasant View! Together, our cities raised over $1,000 for Children’s Miracle Network (which directly benefits Primary Children’s Hospital) and donated 8,565 pairs of shoes for Africa. An incredible
feat that would have been completely impossible without your help! As I’ve reflected on the past year, I have learned more about myself that I ever thought possible. I have been able to meet, work with, and love some of the most amazing human beings in the world. Because of the sacrifices each one of you have made, I am forever changed. I hope that you will continue to support the Miss North Ogden scholarship program, and give the same amount of love to the upcoming Miss North Ogden!
Miss North Ogden 2107
Gracie Kay Nichols
It’s crazy how a year can fly by. It seems like just yesterday that I was crowned Miss North Ogden’s Outstanding Teen. First of all, I would like to thank my parents. Mom, thank you for supporting me and being my personal taxi driver to every event! You have always made me feel like a queen and have told me I could do and be anything that I was willing to work hard for. Dad, thank you for supporting me, teaching me to walk with grace, and to be humble like you. Thank you to my siblings for cheering me on and going out of your way to support me. Thank you to my friends, family, and especially my pageant family. Whoever this crown is passed on to will be blessed with an incredible family. Hannah will step in as the mom and will help you with just about anything, whether you need to talk, cry, or even just need a ride somewhere, she will be there for you! Hannah, along with her amazing mother and former misses, are always there with open, loving arms. And last, but not least, I would like to thank my Miss, Abby Laing. Thank you for becoming like a sister to me and for always setting an amazing example of a true title holder. You have influenced my life very much, and changed it for the better! On my crown, there are 4 points. They signify the 4 s’s. Service, Style, Scholarship, and Success. All of these are great but my favorite would have to be service. Throughout this year, I have learned so much about the value and beauty from serving

others. I reflect on all that I have done this year, from playing music for struggling Alzheimer’s patients, to teaching music to special needs children. Sometimes it is hard, but after doing it, it made me so happy! One of my fondest memories was being able to represent the city of North Ogden at Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen in Provo. It was an honor to be there, and I met so many new friends. Being Miss North Ogden’s Outstanding Teen Miss North Ogden's has meant wearing a crown, Outstanding Teen 2017 even when it is not on your head! It is always trying to be kind and loving to everyone. I am so sad that it is over, but so very thankful, blessed and happy that I have had this experience. I have learned many valuable life lessons, and feel that it has been an honor to represent North Ogden as Miss North Ogden’s Outstanding Teen 2017-2018.

Youth City Council by Hope Elmer What is the North Ogden City Youth Council, you ask? Well, the North Ogden City Youth Council does some pretty amazing activities. We do everything from cleaning up the city streets to helping Santa and the Easter Bunny. The fourth of July is by far the biggest event that we do and lasts 4 days. In my opinion, it is one of our best projects. We start off the celebration by helping at the Grand Marshal dinner to honor an outstanding resident. On July 3rd we help the Kiwanis to clean off tables for the breakfast. Then the big day of July 4th arrives and we start by helping at the breakfast, then the parade, followed by helping with the booths at the park, and finally, the fireworks. The fun doesn't stop there though! On July 5th, we clean up all of the debris from the fireworks.
2018-2019 REPRESENTATIVES Mayor - Richie Armendariz Mayor Pro Tempore - Hope Elmer Recorder - Katelyn Hepler Representative - Kylie Coleman Our Council meets the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the City Offices for planning, then we participate in a fun and productive service project each month. We even have a field trip to the State Capitol and a Leadership Conference that we can participate in! We would like to invite students who will be in 9th-12th grades this fall, to join us now. You get to meet and work with great people, do fun service projects, and experience how City Councils work.

Children's Safety Keeping Children Safe During Cherry Days Once again, North Ogden residents and businesses are getting ready for Utah’s GREATEST Fourth of July celebration known as Cherry Days! During this exciting time, fun-filled activities will be available from sunrise to sundown for all to enjoy. From a 5K Fun Run/Walk and Kiwanis Breakfast to parades, festivals in the park, shows, and a grand finale with concert and fireworks, there is sure to be enough fun for everyone. Each year, however, safety concerns regarding children continue to arise. According to the North Ogden Police Department, the two greatest safety concerns they encounter are: 1) Lost children, and 2) Children running into the road. Parents and guardians can play a vital role in keeping their children safe by following these simple steps:
LOST CHILDREN: a. Have children wear a name tag with a contact’s cell phone number. b. Make sure that children know their parents’ names, phone number, and home address. c. Take a picture of your child before the parade begins, showing their clothes or costume. d. Choose a designated meeting spot, in case of separation during an emergency.
CHILDREN RUNNING INTO THE ROAD: a. Instruct children to stay off the road during the parade. Candy and other treats will be handed out by walkers along the parade route, instead of thrown from floats.
“Close parental supervision is encouraged to help alleviate both of these safety concerns,” says North Ogden City Detective, Paul Rhoades.
b. Help children to avoid “parade chocking,” or encroaching further and further into the parade route. c. Teach children to respect and follow the instructions of police officers and other security personnel.
Let’s ensure that this year’s North Ogden Cherry Days festivities are fun AND safe for everyone! North Ogden Cherry Days | 2018 |
