Mayor's Message Keeping the Community Connected

A

s we draw closer to the end of the year, we might find ourselves reflecting back over the last 12 months on how quickly time has passed. We might assess our accomplishments, disappointments, and even regrets. As a community, we have seen many changes over the year. City projects, developments, and events were started or worked on, but the question remains, did we find success?

“Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others.” –Danny Thomas

I’m reminded of the words of Danny Thomas, a well-known actor during my parents’ generation, when he said, “Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others.” These are good words to think about during this Christmas season, particularly as we get caught up in the seasonal spirit of shopping, decorating, and celebration. We have every reason to focus our attention on preparation and planning for a successful Christmas morning, but I suggest it is more than that, a lot more! As your Mayor, I have witnessed so many among us in our community who are less fortunate, less capable, less appreciated. They travel the road of life sometimes alone, sometimes without, sometimes afraid. They often don’t want their struggles to be known, yet they would welcome a friendly smile, a caring gesture, a thoughtful offering of support. The Christmas season is the one day a year that reminds all of us that we are here for something greater than ourselves. So if you really want to experience the true spirit of the season, then go out of your way to do a little something extra for someone. Let it be a less known neighbor, a lonely widow, or a visitor that you might meet. It doesn’t always have to be sharing a gift, when so often all that is needed is an openhearted smile, a friendly handshake, a thoughtful conversation. The simplest of things, not the biggest present, often provides the needed gratification and lasting memory. Letting others know that you truly care can make all the difference in their world for them. Remember, the measure of a great community is not found in the aesthetically pleasing buildings, parks or roadways. It is measured by how we treat our fellow residents, in which we all have an important part. In behalf of a grateful City government, we wish each of you a wonderful Christmas / Hanukkah and New Year season and hope that you find happiness in the service to others. Robert Dandoy, Mayor

from the Editor What is the definition of love? To me it is defined by our actions. I have witnessed people, friends and family come together to support and show love in so many ways over the last month. I know there are hundreds of unseen acts of love and kindness shared between many of you as well. Melissa and Ryan Spelts I am so grateful to those who love me and for the chance I have to love them back. I hope you are surrounded by many who love you this holiday season. It is truly what it is all about.

Landlords/Owners that participate in the Program will pay a reduced licensing fee. For more information, please refer to our website at www.royutah.org or call 801-774-1040.

Cemetery Winter Maintenance Schedule November 1st to March 31st

No decorations will be removed in November and December. Grave decorations will be removed by City crews on the last Thursday of January, February, and March. Please be sure to remove decorations by the last Wednesday evening of each month to avoid having them disposed.

Christmas Tree Recycle Dates December 26 - January 17 Bring your live Christmas trees to the Public Works yard located at 5460 South 2700 West in Roy and drop it off to be recycled. •

Please do not bring boxes or wrapping

You will be asked to show proof of address

You can bring glass and metal year round during business hours to public works.

Starting Monday, Nov. 26th the Roy Police Department will have a Santa mailbox in the lobby. Children may come and drop off their letters to Santa and pick a prize from Santa’s Christmas box.

WE ALL LIVE DOWNSTREAM This is a friendly reminder that discharging or washing antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, paints, solvents, fertilizers and cement into the storm drain system is illegal. Antifreeze is also attractive and harmful to animals. Please dispose of hazardous materials in the proper manner and place. The Weber County Solid Waste Transfer Station may be contacted at 801-399-8358 for information on hazardous material disposal. Roy City would like to thank the citizens who have assisted with storm water drainage by clearing leaves and debris from the gutters and the storm drain grates. Citizens can be a big help in the winter months also by clearing snow and ice away from the grates until the City crews arrive to clear them. Please sweep up or use a blower to blow grass clippings and fertilizers that get onto driveways, sidewalk, and gutters or streets back onto your own lawn. Please call Roy City Public Works before draining backyard pools. Chlorine levels need to be at 0 before the pool can be drained. The Roy City storm water system runs through the Meadow Creek fishing pond. This water is vital to the pond and must be kept clean. Please dispose of grass clippings, pet waste, paint, fertilizers, tree leaves and seeds etc., properly and help keep our City streets as well as streams and rivers clean. What kind of contaminants might reach our rivers and streams? •

Contaminants resulting from unwise landscaping practices such as over watering might include: dirt, leaves, grass clippings, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.

Masonry and Paving: Fresh concrete and cement-related mortars that wash into lakes, rivers, and streams are toxic to fish and the aquatic environment. Disposing of these materials to storm drains or streams causes serious problems - and is prohibited by law!

Oil: Pour waste oil into an unbreakable container (plastic milk jug), seal and label. Do not mix other materials with oil. Call 801-399-8381 or 1-800-4580145 for disposal.

Please contact the Roy City Public Works Department to report violations at (801)744-1090 or (801)774-1098, if it is after hours please call Weber Dispatch at 801-629-8221. Our current storm water ordinance is on our website at www.royutah.org.

WHAT IS CODE RED? The Public Safety agencies of Weber County are using CodeRED, a high speed mass notification system to keep you safe in the event of an emergency. The System allows us to deliver emergency messages to you via phone call to your landline or mobile device and through text and email. You will know you have received a CodeRED alert when the number 866-419-5000 appears on your caller ID. If you missed any message details you can always dial the toll free number back, as many times as needed.

Sign Up Your Cell Phone and Receive Code Red Mobile Alerts Did you know that it is free to sign up your cell phone for CodeRED? It is also very important to do, because if your contact information is not in the database, or if you do not have a landline phone in your home, then you will not receive alerts if an emergency were in your area. Our alert system utilizes telephone numbers that are landline based. If you do not have a landline telephone, you will not receive a notification. By registering your cell phone, the mapping program will geographically code your cell phone to the address of your residence or work location. You will be able to tell the map where you want your cell phone to be tied to online at: https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/11B885E194B7. ** If you need assistance to register your cell phone with CodeRED, or if you have questions please contact Weber County Emergency management at: 801-778-6682.

Art Activities Monday Fun Day ADVENT CALENDAR

Supplies needed

BY MELISSA SPELTS

• The origin of the Advent calendar can be traced back to the 19th century. Early origins of the calendar were made from a chalk line for every day in December until Christmas Eve. Some calendars were made from 24 candles that led up to Christmas. Today advent calendars often contain a treat, like chocolate, for each day hidden behind a door or in a compartment. Advent calendars can be a fun family Christmas tradition. For us it is a fun way to build excitement for the holiday. I found this idea online and we are excited to use it this season. In each compartment I put five treats or toys for my 5 kiddos. It was fun finding their favorite treats to fill each cup. I’m excited to see how much fun my family will have with it this Christmas Season. Merry Christmas, we hope you enjoy this project.

Moe’s Southwest Grill BY RYAN SPELTS

You can tell a lot about a place by the attitude of its employees. I

could tell immediately when we showed up to Moe’s Southwest Grill in Layton that this was a good place because the employees were engaged and smiling. It was late on a Saturday night after a huge group meal had just finished and they were still happy. Surprisingly, the restaurant was spotless after the big group had left. Michael Lin has been in the restaurant business for 35 years. When he decided to open his own restaurant, he founded Moe’s Southwest Grill that now has tow locations, one in Layton on Antelope Dr and the other in Clinton on 2000 W. Michael opened his first restaurant four years ago and has loved working with Moe’s which has 700 locations nationwide. He brings his own brand of management to his stores, treating employees like family. He has extremely high retention rates in an industry where that is not common. He also believes cleanliness is of the utmost importance. He passes every inspection with flying colors and the inspectors are always pleasantly surprised at how well they perform. I for one find this to be of utmost importance, there is nothing worse that seeing a dirty restaurant and wondering what the kitchen looks like. Moe’s Southwest doesn’t just deliver on

cleanliness and happy employees, they also have some awesome food. Starting with a food mission that includes fresh ingredients prepared daily with no microwaves, zero trans fat and no MSG. There isn’t even a freezer in the place. We are talking fresh. You can tell when you eat it too. Very delicious and fresh tasting with just the right amount of seasoning. The menu is a riot with meals with crazy names from pop culture. We enjoyed the Wrong Doug from Hangover “That is the wrong Doug!” (I had to YouTube it). My wife had the Close Talker, their salad named after the “Close Talker” scenes from Sein-feld. The restaurant is also very family friendly and lots of fun. My Wrong Doug was a mix of flavorful Chicken and Pork with beans, veggies and the best queso. It is like a southwest Mexican sandwich. I loved every bite, I could only finish half of it because they have unlimited fresh tortilla chips and salsa. I might have eaten too many of those … nah! It was a good choice. My wife got the Close Talker which is a delicious salad, she opted for the grilled steak and it was awesome. I had a few bites of it too. The Chipotle Ranch is delicious and they have other traditional options too.

I have to say my favorite part was the queso and chips. They have

white queso and chili con queso which we just had to bring some home. The kids loved it too. Michael mentioned a local family that saves $1000 a year because of his queso. The husband said they used to have to travel twice per year to San Diego for authentic queso. Now they only have to go once because they can get their queso fix at Moe’s. I have a special fondness for queso too, we had an anniversary trip to San Diego where I was introduced to the creamy cheesy delicious sauce. As soon as I tried Moe’s Queso, I was taken back there. This stuff is the sort of thing you find yourself licking out of the little condiment bowl and not caring who is watching. Yum! Plus there is an assortment of salsas which are awesome. If you are like me and don’t like when salsa is branded as hot but it really isn’t, well, they actually have hot salsa! It's awesome. A local favorite that is offered year round is their pineapple cucumber salsa. For your date night or family dinner out, I highly recommend giving Moe’s a visit.

Christmas Cookies with a Kiss By Melissa Spelts

These were my favorite Christmas cookies as a child. I especially loved helping my mom take the wrappers off the Hershey Kisses. My mom would always have to buy extra kisses because I would sneak a few into my mouth instead of on the cookies. This year we tried something festive with the peppermint white chocolate kisses and they are surprisingly delicious.

Grandma Spelts’ Honey Butter Popcorn by Melissa Spelts

Ryan’s mom makes some amazing dishes and this is one of Ryan’s favorite treats during the holidays because it is the perfect amount of sweetness (not too overwhelming) and buttery goodness. When our family gets together it means a lot of mouths looking for something to munch on. This makes a batch big enough to please the masses. First, pop your corn, make sure and remove all the un-popped kernels. Seriously! This is a very important step. This stuff is so yummy and your family will eat it with such enthusiasm that someone will break a tooth if they hit a kernel. So go through it again!

½ C. peanut butter ½ C. butter ½ C. sugar ½ C. brown sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 egg 1 ⅓ C. flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp. salt 24 Hershey Kisses (unwrapped) Preheat oven to 350°. Put all ingredients in mixer and beat until smooth. Roll into small balls and bake for 1012 minutes. Once cooked, place a Hershey Kiss (chocolate or peppermint) in the center of each cookie. Yummy!

We use 5 scoops (of the little lid on top) of kernels in our air popper 2 C. butter 1 C. honey (we like the Cox delicious cream honey - unfiltered) 4 C. sugar 1 C. whipping cream Add butter, honey, sugar and whipping cream in a pot and bring to a boil until you get to a “soft ball stage” (235° - 240°) At this temperature, if you drip a small amount of the syrupy mixture into cold water, it will form a soft, flexible ball. If you remove the ball from the water, it will flatten like a pancake after a few moments in your hand. This is how you will know that the mixture is ready. This is the perfect temperature to keep the caramel soft and delicious. Stir into the popcorn. CONNECTIONPUBLISHING //December 2018 15
