H
Hales Family Fiddlers started in 1972 in Pleasant View, Utah. We play and sing old time fiddle, bluegrass, western, country, and more. It started with Dad on the guitar, Mom on the fiddle, and six children covering the fiddle, bass, piano, mandolin, banjo, and guitar. The next generation is excelling and now taking the lead. We have performed throughout Utah, the surrounding states, and have represented the USA at International Folk Festivals in Mexico, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Hungary, Austria, England, Scotland, China, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, and France. The oldest sibling, Diane, married Roy native, Leon Wilson, and has lived in Roy the last 40 years. She presently serves on the city council. Music is a great way to come together. We are excited to participate in this first year of Roy Concerts in the Park. We look forward to seeing you!

HAPPY SUMMER! From Roy Water Conservancy District
WATER CONSERVATION & RESTRICTIONS Utah is the second driest state in the nation, and water conservation is critical. Our Board of Trustees has put the following restrictions in place for ALL customers of Roy Water Conservancy District:
Water no more than TWICE per week from Memorial Day to Labor day. Water no more than ONCE per week from Labor Day until water is turned off. One watering is equal to up to 20 minutes per station for fixed sprinkler heads, and up to 40 minutes per station for rotary sprinkler heads. Watering frequency and length applies to ALL landscape such as lawn, gardens, trees, etc., and is dependent on weather – do not water during or immediately after a rainstorm or during windy conditions. We will not be issuing Watering Permits for 2022 due to extreme drought conditions. The installation of sod, seed, or any landscape requiring additional water is strongly discouraged.
As always:
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WATERING between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. allowed!!!!! Watering on consecutive days is NOT ALLOWED. Watering multiple times in a given day is NOT ALLOWED. (However, the “cycle & soak” method is allowed – see www.roywater.com/restrictions.php for more information.) Watering for excessive lengths of time is NOT ALLOWED. Failing to repair leaking water lines and sprinkler heads is a VIOLATION. Allowing secondary water to run waste down the gutter is NOT ALLOWED. Please MINIMIZE the amount of water spraying streets, sidewalks, or other hard-surface areas instead of landscape. Any other use of secondary water deemed excessive or wasteful is a VIOLATION.
Please report any violations of these restrictions to our office at 801-825-9744. We all need to do our part to help with water conservation!
CROSS CONNECTIONS Cross connections occur when someone connects the secondary (irrigation) water line into the culinary (drinking) water lines. Because the pressure in the secondary water system is higher than the pressure in the culinary water system, the secondary water will be forced into the culinary water line if they are cross connected. Women in Business BY RYAN SPELTS • PHOTOS BY MELISSA SPELTS It takes a special type of person to succeed in business. It takes hard work and grit because, sometimes, business is hard. Sometimes, you lose a key client or customer. Sometimes, people get mad at you for something that seems unfair. At other times, it seems that everything is just on fire and all you have is a squirt gun to try and douse the flames. Historically, women have had a harder time in business and had to fight for their rightful place. Today, in my personal observation, some of our most powerful business people are women business leaders. I am impressed every year when interviewing some of these amazing women at their strength and their passion for doing great things. These women don’t make excuses, and they get things done. I, for one, am inspired. This month, we have highlighted women from our community. Some are business owners, others are business leaders. They all play an important role in our local business community. We are honored to tell their stories and hope you will enjoy reading them.
WIB intro FEATURE Lizzy Badger
Raquel DeSilva
Brittany Fowers
Lizzy Badger grew up in Washington state and is a lover of all things sports but focused much of her hard work and attention on golf and softball in high school. She also worked hard in school and graduated Valedictorian of her class. She attended BYU and graduated with a business degree and an emphasis in recreation management. She first worked in recreation in Lindon before being hired as the Roy City Recreation Manager. She modestly attributes most of her success to her boss Jody and her team of 54 parttime employees that help her run the city’s recreation programs and events. Whether she is painting fields, creating game schedules, ordering jerseys and prizes, filling Easter eggs for the hunt, or taking on the myriad of issues that arise in youth sports: she says she loves her job because of the opportunities it gives the kids in her program. The youth, along with her coworkers and the citizens of Roy, have become her family in Utah, and she loves the sense of community she feels here.
Raquel DeSilva has a bachelor's in Business Administration and master's in Counseling and Mental Health. For some time, her mentors had been urging her to spread her wings and try to advance her career, and, although she was hesitant to do so, she decided to apply for a job as the Executive Director of the new nonprofit called Family Promise. She got the job. Family Promise’s primary goal is to help heal families with hope. Sometimes, when you are in crisis, you don’t see options and don’t have hope.
Brittany Fowers is not a Utah native. She was born in Virginia and raised in Florida. She came to Utah after meeting her husband, who served in the military and was born and raised in Utah. Brittany started at Roy City four years ago in the utilities department. She now works as an executive assistant and city recorder for Roy City. Although her work includes a broad spectrum of duties, she spends a lot of her time working on agendas for council meetings, assisting the mayor and city manager, managing social media platforms, and keeping records. She and her husband now live in West Haven, along with their three busy children and dog. Together they enjoy anything that will take them to the mountains, including hiking, camping, and scuba diving. Her favorite thing about Roy is the sense of community she’s felt here. Coming from a city with a population of 220,000+ people, she loves that Roy still feels like a small town and everybody knows everybody.

Because of rising housing costs, families becoming homeless is a growing crisis. Family Promise helps recently homeless families get training, find an apartment, and get back to being independent. So far this year, they have helped nine families move from homelessness to independence. Raquel was also the recipient of the 2022 Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce Athena Award. She is a powerful contributor to our community.

Preschool & Daycare Where Fun Is Learning
BY HAILEY MINTON
Shelly Bailey owns On My Way Preschool & Daycare with locations in Clinton and Roy. “The biggest rewards are moments like when I walk into a restaurant and the waiter who is taller than me says, ‘Miss Shelly!’ and gives me a big hug. Being a part of these kids’ lives is the biggest paycheck.”
S
S
helly started on this journey as a 19-year-old when she started caring for a family member’s daughter along with her own. Shelly knew right away the level of care sh out 26 years. They moved to their location in Roy six years ago, and they’ve been operating their Clinton location for six months now. There were challenges she faced as a business owner, especially as she grew from doing an in-home daycare all on her own to hiring employees and eventually moving into a center. However, she said the bonds, relationships, and teaching moments she has with the kids make it worth it. Some of the children she cared for have gone on to work for her, and others bring children of their own to entrust in her care. “It warms my heart to be part of this huge family.”
Who she is today is a culmination of years of experience. “There is a difference between academic school and the school of hard knocks.” She has seen some people who are a lmost finished with their academic schooling really struggle once placed in a classroom setting. She sees apprenticeship as a key way to learn what it takes to really care for children and how to overcome the challenges that come along with it. Kassidy, Shelly’s youngest daughter who now runs the Roy location, knew how to change diapers as a three-year-old. “She is a natural, a baby whisperer. When she comes into the room, the kids know she means business, but they absolutely love her, and she loves them.” Having a love of kids is the most important quality she and her employees possess.

he desired the hair to be permanently gone and not return after a few weeks or months, which are the results with waxing and laser. She needed a permanent solution. She researched solutions and found Electrolysis. Unfortunately, when she moved to Utah, she realized that Electrolysis was not easily available in Northern Utah. To correct this, she became an electrologist in 2014 and started offering her services in her home. The demand for her services were so high that she added others to her practice and, eventually, needed to find a more adequate space. In 2017, she moved her business to a medical building on Washington Blvd in North Ogden. As she grew, she listened to her clients and the community’s desire for additional highquality treatments. In Anna fashion, she researched tirelessly for the treatments that were most effective and after training her staff extensively added the additional services. Such treatments include Botox, Juvederm, advanced facials, laser hair removal, body contouring by EvolveX, and, soon, Morpheus8, growing her business to a full-service medical spa. Recently, Anna faced another problem. She was unable to find enough qualified Electrologists to meet the demand at

Even being new, they have exceeded their expectations and have had consistent registration and will be starting their second session this July. Smedley's
S
BY KRIS BLANKMAN
Smedley Plumbing, Heating, and Air is celebrating 75 years in business. This multigenerational company was founded by Wayne T. and Maxine Smedley, who were farmers in Syracuse.
T
hey noticed a need for these services in the community. Mr. Smedley and his best friend acquired the needed education, and Smedley’s was born. Most of the Smedley family has, at one time, worked at the company. Amy Maxwell, the granddaughter of Wayne T. and Maxine, is the office manager. She says, “The business that my grandma and grandpa started has empowered men and women to provide for their families in an honest and friendly way.” She said that being a woman in this industry has been fun. She enjoys surprising folks who call in with accurate and helpful answers to their questions. She loves when they call back and thank her for saving them a service call and for knowing what she is talking about. The staff at Smedley’s focuses on providing homeowners with honest advice and knowledgeable maintenance and service. They want to help keep your furnace and air conditioner running efficiently. Smedley’s offers solutions for people with allergies, asthma, and compromised immune systems. Smedley’s service technicians do not work on commission. They try hard every day to come up with honest and fair solutions to solve comfort needs or plumbing needs. If your furnace is old, they may recommend you start saving for a new one but will do all they can to maintain it and keep it working properly until that time.
Amy is proud of the team at Smedley’s. “We do have the very best people that work here. Every one of the people that work here I would let into my home without me there. They are top notch in education, training, and integrity. I love each one of them.”
"I am just a tiny piece. The legacy of providing quality workmanship and service at a fair and honest price will continue when I am gone."
Smedley’s gives back to their amazing community in numerous ways. One of them is by taking part in the Lennox Feel the Love campaign. In the fall of each year, friends and family can nominate someone who needs a new furnace. Smedley’s participates by donating the labor to install the equipment. Amy says, “I am just a tiny piece. The legacy of providing quality workmanship and service at a fair and honest price will continue when I am gone.”

Roy's Above and Beyond: Beehive Mopars Club BY HAILEY MINTON This month’s Roy’s Above and Beyond goes to The Beehive Mopars club, started by James Hilton. He started the club because he loves MOPARS, Dodge Chrysler, or Jeep vehicles. He loved hanging out with the other owners but felt like they could do more. “We were just hanging out and driving around." James decided they could make their gatherings more meaningful. They started doing birthday celebration cruises, and then people started reaching out, requesting them to come by. They started looking for ways to help others. As a club, they voluntarily hold events for children in need, whether they have learning, health, mental,
or other challenges. “I was bullied in junior high, so I have a soft spot for children in similar situations.” The club works together to support children by doing drive-by parades, car shows, and fundraisers. “We want to give them a good show and a good time to let them know they are important.” James is the special event host, but he credits that he wouldn’t be anything without the members. “Get in touch with our club for an appearance request Visit our Beehive Mopars Facebook page and click on our services tab, which will explain the type of parades and driveway car shows we can do.”

My hope with these articles is to inspire you to go out and take pictures of things that are most important to you and to get shots that you are happy about. I hope you will snap pictures of people you love and places that are dear to you. Photography is such a fun way to be creative and to capture and chronicle specific times in your life. Photography is such a fun way to be creative and to capture and chronicle specific times in your life.
My favorite props for pictures with children and teens are balloons, bubbles, and bubble gum. Anytime I use these things, I get the biggest smiles, sometimes involuntarily, which is very helpful. They also help me catch some candid photos of them having fun. It can bring out the happy side of any kid, big or small. Blankets, chairs, a chalkboard with a message on it can also be fun. I also love including pets, a favorite tree they love to climb, a bike that they ride every day, basketball or other sport accessories, or ballet shoes. Really, use anything that shows the interest of the target. I also like to go to the dollar store and get a pack of prop mustaches and tiaras and let people pick one they like. It is just for fun, and not every thing you use will be your favorite so try a few different ideas.
Some of my favorite poses are:

Big group hugs (makes everyone smile)

Leaning up against a wall or tree

HANDS HANDS HANDS
I often get the question from those being photographed, “What do I do with my hands?” I want hands to do something natural. It shouldn’t look awkward or stiff. Put them in your pocket or on your hips or even just let them hang at your side.

Our BBQ pulled pork makes the best sandwiches! Just top with slaw, Kendal’s BBQ sauce, and pickles.
BY KENDAL RAE JENSEN
Set pressure cooker to the high saute setting. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, paprika, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, mustard, cayenne pepper, cumin, and pepper. Season pork with brown sugar mixture. Heat canola oil; working in two batches, add pork and cook until evenly browned, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in chicken stock and 4 Tbsp. vinegar, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Select manual setting; adjust pressure to high and set time for 40 minutes. When finished cooking, quick-release pressure according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove pork shoulder from the pressure cooker and shred the meat using two
forks; stir in remaining 2 Tbsp. vinegar and season with salt and pepper, to taste, if needed. Serve immediately with your favorite bbq sauce (try Kendal’s below!)
KENDAL’S CAROLINA BBQ SAUCE
Try This!
2 cups of brown sugar 1 bottle of ketchup 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes 4 Tbsp. minced garlic 2 Tbsp. onion powder 2 Tbsp. ground mustard 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper Place apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, garlic, onion, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper in a sauce pan. Cook on stove top at medium heat. Bring to a boil. Whisk together until sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature. Pour sauce into a jar or bottle. For best results, refrigerate one day before serving. Shake well before serving. You can make this days ahead of time. The longer it sits, the more flavors that will come out. It’ll keep in the fridge for 21 days.

Rice Crispy Treats
No Bake Cookies
This recipe is super simple and fast to make. When I was a little girl, my mom would put M&Ms in our rice crispy treats on special occasions. I always loved when she did that. It was so fun!
BY MELISSA SPELTS
2 cups granulated sugar ½ cup salted butter ½ cup milk (my favorite to use is whole milk) 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups oatmeal
BY MELISSA SPELTS
2 bags of marshmallows rice crispy cereal 1 stick of butter M&Ms (optional)
1/3 cup olive oil 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 Tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest (approx. 1 lemon) 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. EACH sugar, dried oregano, dried parsley, and pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives Whisk together all of the Lemon Chive Dressing ingredients. Refrigerate until ready to use. Cook pasta in generously salted water just short of al dente, then add the asparagus to the pot and cook with the pasta for 1 more minute. Drain the pasta and asparagus, rinse with cold water, then toss with a drizzle of olive oil to keep pasta from sticking. Add all of the salad ingredients to a large bowl. Once pasta has cooled, add Lemon Chive Dressing and toss until evenly coated. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste (I like more pepper). Serve immediately.
My favorite way to make these is with a glass bowl and microwave. Put the marshmallow and butter in the bowl and microwave for a minute at a time until the marshmallows are melty. Pour in Rice Crispy cereal, slowly, as you stir it all together. I love my rice crispy treats extra marshmallowy. Once you have it at your favorite consistency, dump it into a pan and let it sit for 30 minutes or so to cool and set. YUMMY!!
In a large pot, add sugar, butter, milk, and cocoa powder. Slowly bring to a boil while whisking. Once it gets to a bowl, allow it to boil for 1 minute. Take your pot off the stove and add oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well. Spoon dough onto parch paper or foil and let cool.
