Dogs need room to run, too.

Roughly two years ago, I walked into an all-day budget meeting with the city council at the Fire Station. I looked east and noted this large, long, narrow, and unused section of parkland. With the freeway under construction and changes to the area, it hit me. This would make a great giant dog run. I shared this thought with the council, and they agreed. The location had been the element we lacked earlier, and this is an area we could add to the developed parkland to serve citizens. This had been the most requested addition to parks at the time.

Even before I joined the council, I had heard citizens asking for a dog park. The council has long supported the idea, but where would we put it? Parkland is a premium, and with our evergrowing population, including young families, we need more and more programable space for our youth. Something like a dog park could take any shape, but sports fields require specific dimensions.

If you haven’t already heard, we have awarded a contract to build this dog park east of the existing Fremont Park. Construction could be as soon, and completion is expected later this calendar year.

The dog park is fully funded with park impact fees that can only be spent on new park developments. It will include over an acre of fenced land for dogs to run and socialize with other dogs. There will be a walking trail on the inside

of the fence, water for pups and people, benches, trees that will eventually provide shade, and of course waste receptacles because we are NOT hiring pooper scoopers. Dog owners will be responsible for their dogs in every respect to keep this open. Like other facilities, it will depend on the park users acting responsibly to keep it open.

If you are not a dog owner, how does this benefit you? It is against the city code to have dogs off-leash in the city. Complaints have shown that some don’t follow that rule in our current parks. With the dog park available for off-leash activities, it provides an option for dog owners to avoid a ticket.

Specialty facilities like a dog park, our new pump track, and our extremely popular splash pad may not be something every citizen uses, but continuing to offer a variety of options improves the quality of life in our city. No city can afford to build and support one of everything, but this is one I have been hearing requests for over many years. I am excited we can add this to our many park amenities later this year.

Our City Council at Work

The City Council held its regular business meeting on April 9, 2024. Here are some of the significant actions taken at the meeting:

♦ Syracuse Lions Club members were recognized for the fingerprinting services provided to the public through the Syracuse Police Department.

♦ Police Service Dog Jax was approved for transfer to a surplus position, allowing him to serve with another law enforcement agency in Utah.

♦ Granted a fee waiver and waived the deposits for North Davis Communities that Care meetings at the Community Center through 2025.

♦ Approved comprehensive edits to the Syracuse City Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.

♦ City Code Amendments:

• Section 10.30.020(B)(3) was updated to require that each garage accommodate two 9’ x 20’ stalls uninterrupted by protrusions.

• Section 10.10.040 and Title 3, Chapter 15 were repealed to eliminate the Board of Adjustment, and the duties were assigned to a Hearing Officer.

• Section 10.28.020, about the Architectural Review Committee, was repealed and re-enacted into Title 3, with a four-year term for committee members.

• Section 9-10-090 was amended to allow developers of non-residential projects to satisfy the water conveyance obligation by paying a fee of up to 50% of the required shares or rights.

What’s the Building Scoop?

♦ The parameters and the construction of the dog park were authorized.

♦ Established the secondary water season and the use of the geographical quadrants to designate no watering days.

♦ Approved the contract amendment pertaining to water utility billing software with the Utah Division of Water Resources.

♦ Amended the Shadow Point Shopping Center Incentive Agreement between the Syracuse City Redevelopment Agency (RDA) and Shadow Point, LLC for a tax increment rebate related to the development of a large gym facility.

Davis Behavioral Health is constructing its newest clinic in Syracuse at 1799 West Antelope Drive. The two-story, 7200-square-foot office building is part of the Arlo mixed-use development.

As a non-profit corporation, the clinic will provide a wide range of behavioral and mental health services, filling a need for local and convenient services. The facilities are designed to be patient-centered, allowing for the compassionate care of all age groups in a comfortable environment. Employing psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, therapists, nurses, and support staff, Davis Behavioral Health will have staff on hand to provide comprehensive services to children and adults facing serious challenges.

PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE

Grass Clippings & Fertilizer

When mowing or applying granular fertilizer, be sure your grass clippings or fertilizer do not end up in the street, sidewalk, or driveway where they can be blown or washed into storm drains. Sweep up or blow the excess clippings or fertilizer and discard or place them back in the grass.

If you hire a lawn care company, make sure they leave a clean and well-groomed environment. Grass clippings are high in phosphorus and fertilizer has nitrogen which are major pollutants in our waterbodies. If there are grass clippings or fertilizer in the curb, gutter, or on the streets you may find yourself with a fine.

Road Construction

1000 West (2075 S.to 2700 S.) is under construction this summer. This will include replacing utility pipes under the road, installing new asphalt, and updating the pedestrian crosswalk to Legacy Park.

1525 West (700 S. to Dallas St.) is under construction this summer. It will include the installation of a new water transmission main and new pavement with some new sidewalk ramps.

2700 South (2000 W. to 2400 W.) is under construction until the end of May 2024. They are installing a water main, a storm drain, and a new road with curb and gutter.

Michael Faux is known for his dependability and diligence in getting the job done. As a Facilities Maintenance Technician, Michael ensures Syracuse City facilities function smoothly by maintaining building structures, HVAC systems, appliances, and more.

Since starting with Syracuse City in 2020, Michael has found he enjoys working on a variety of tasks and appreciates the training available when he is interested in expanding his skill set. However, his favorite part of the job is the people. He shared that of all the places he’s worked, Syracuse City has been the most welcoming.

Before starting at Syracuse City, Michael served in the military for ten years as an Army medic. He has a degree in automotive technology, experience in commercial trucking, and even worked in the North Dakota oil fields.

Michael is grateful for his boys, his significant other, with whom he has had the privilege of spending the last decade, and his mom, who has been the most positive influence in his life. During his free time, he can be found playing pickleball, working on cars, or enjoying outdoor activities such as fishing and camping.

Don’t Leave Your Footprint

Spring is a great time to consider cleaning up and planning to discard old, unwanted, or expired items around the house. Do you have old, expired, or unused prescription drugs?

Getting rid of unused, expired medicines and controlled substances prevents other people from misusing and abusing prescription drugs. Check your medicine cabinet today and bring any unused, expired medications or controlled substances to local drop-off bins to safely dispose of them.

Drop-offs are perfect for the following:

• Expired prescriptions

• Unused medications

• Controlled substances

• Things that cannot go in the drop-off bins:

• Illegal drugs (schedule I controlled substances)

• Liquid containers larger than 4 oz. (120 mL)

• Sharps (needles, syringes) or sharps containers

• Aerosol spray cans (aerosol inhalers, aerosol sprays)

• Batteries or medical devices

• Hazardous chemicals (chemotherapy, household chemicals)

• Household waste

All hazardous waste items come with instructions; when followed, offer safe handling and disposal

Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (1997 E. 3500 N., Layton) offers a permanent HHW Drop-Off Facility (located through the landfill entrance and to the left, before the scales). This service is offered free of charge to residents of Davis and Weber Counties.

So, take the hint and don’t leave your footprint!

The Syracuse Spoon

The Crepery is OPEN!

Signs were up for a long time, and I think some wondered when The Crepery would finally open. Well, it did, and it is amazing!

Just walking in I appreciated the boutique-style atmosphere that was very inviting, creating a great vibe and making it a wonderful spot to gather. The friendly, helpful staff round out the appeal, but their crepes are gourmet makeovers of comfort food and, truly, the stars of the show.

Home options for crepes are generally sweet, but The Crepery has a savory menu to round things out with a variety of options to choose from. I went with the Mac Daddy, which was a whole meal by itself. The Mac Daddy comes with chicken, bacon, and mozzarella cheese all topped with a dill cream cheese sauce paired with fresh arugula and sliced avocado.

This was a hearty meal that left me full by the end. The plating was so appealing that I complimented the staff for their attention to detail. A good crowd was present during my visit, and I saw so many exciting variations on crepes that I can’t wait to go back.

The sweet and savory menu looked so good I wish I could have tried one of everything. The menu has gluten and dairy-free options and should appeal to all tastes and dietary restrictions. The only thing this place needs is a bigger parking lot to serve even more people because The Crepery is going to have a wide appeal.

Green Waste Recycling

The green waste recycling season runs through Nov. 30. Green waste recycling is a voluntary program for the curbside collection of green waste. CHANGES ON THE HORIZON FOR HVAC SYSTEMS

Rentmeister Total Home Service has been a vital member of the community since the business was founded in 1978 by Don Rentmeister. Now a thirdgeneration, family-owned company, Ryan Rentmeister serves as President. “Dad started working in this same building in 1953,” Ryan says. “So we’ve been here for a long time.” Two of the grandkids now work in the business as well.

Ryan has seen many changes. “We are now one of the last family-owned HVAC and plumbing companies. Most businesses in the industry are now nationally owned. But that’s not what we want. This is our town. We are proud of our roots, born and raised in Syracuse, and we have no plans to sell.”

Under Ryan’s leadership, the company works hard to give back. “We are always here for Heritage Days. We love being part of the annual breakfast.” Additionally, Rentmeister Total Home Service is heavily involved in the West Davis Chamber of Commerce, and the Home Builder’s Association, and supports local sports teams and the Little League.

Ryan feels that this is a community worth investing in. “We want to help. And we’ve loved being able to serve.” They have donated time and resources, even giving away HVAC systems or water heaters to neighbors in need.

Their team members are local people. “Our employees are part of this community, and we want to help them provide for their families. This is part of who we are as a company. We’re invested in giving really good service because these are our friends and neighbors we are serving.”

Rentmeister has also worked to support innovative products made locally in Utah. As their services have expanded over the

years, they are now able to offer HVAC, plumbing, fireplaces, electrical, and water storage through Bull Water Systems, outdoor kitchens from The Outdoor Kitchen Kit, and products from Big Daddy Hills BBQ.

Most furnaces and air conditioners are now manufactured outside the US, but that wasn’t good enough for Rentmeister. They choose to go further in their quest to offer the best products. “We went to the manufacturer and got them to tailor the equipment to our specifications. In the past, we’ve seen lots of problems due to products that were not a match for our climate. In this area, we have very low humidity, high altitude, and dramatic temperature swings. All of these things can affect how your furnace and air conditioner function. Now all the products we use are custom-built for us, to function optimally in our area.”

Rentmeister Total Home Service is constantly on the hunt for new systems that will increase efficiency and lower costs. “Lately, we have used a lot of dual-fuel heating systems,” Ryan says. “They will run on both gas and electricity, saving the average homeowner about $400 a year on utilities. These systems are extremely efficient.”

Important news in the HVAC world is a coming change in refrigerant. Around the end of 2024, government regulations will change and new standards will take effect. “We anticipate a cost increase of about 20%,” Ryan says. “If you’re considering a new air conditioner, the next few months are an ideal time if you’d like to get in before things change.”

Ryan loves his work here. “We are a local company, and we plan to stay that way.” He and his team are committed to the community and the industry, determined to offer the best service to their neighbors.

ANNOUNCING THE NEW MOUNTAIN HOME SERVICES

In 1954, two separate, familyowned companies were launched, each running out of their garage. One focusing on heating and air-conditioning and the other on electrical work. Now fast forward 80 years.
