A
s we begin July, we have just come off celebrating the city during Syracuse Heritage days. I want to personally thank all those who put so much energy into providing the many opportunities to come together as a community and participate in so many ways. While the majority of the effort falls to the Parks and Recreation Department, all of our city departments make contributions to the celebration. Also, as we begin July, we take time to celebrate those men and women who led us in forming this new nation and to commemorate the defining moment of signing the Declaration of Independence. Later in the month, we celebrate the settling of Utah Pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley, which would later anchor the State of Utah. I have a passion for the history and both events. I turn my message focus at this time to the assignment I accepted in City Building – that is, our shared experience in Syracuse City. As many of you, I too have a passion for our city and will continue to put my energy towards building something we can all enjoy.

City Building will never compare to the valor or distinction our nation’s founding fathers showed while putting their very lives on the line for Freedom. As our city emerges, it doesn’t compare to physical sacrifices of early Utah settlers. I do note that what history remembers of those who accomplished great things is that their work was motivated by the opportunities that would come from their sacrifice to family, friends, and neighbors for generations to come, rather than for their personal benefit. Public service should always be about the mutual benefit of working together. These benefits should make available to all, equally. If we all truly benefit from the growth around us, maybe people will think less about specific challenges and spend more time at peace.

What’s the BUILDING SCOOP? A monthly update on new builds around Syracuse BY ELIZABETH NAJIM
A new addition to Gateway Storage is currently being built on Bluff Ridge Drive, just south of the Pizza Factory, called Trico Commercial Phase 1. It will be located on 1771 South Bluff Ridge Drive. The material used will match the other current buildings. This addition will add just over 29,000 square feet to the existing business. There will be flex office spaces in addition to extra storage garages.

The city council normally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. You can participate in council meetings by attending in person or virtually through Zoom and YouTube. Public comment is accepted from both in-person and virtual attendees.

Public Works Update DROUGHT WATERING RESTRICTIONS: Syracuse City has implemented the following outdoor watering restrictions, which are being enforced: • No outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. • No more than two waterings a week. Limit watering times. • Mandatory no-watering days are in effect. Choose 2 days out of the 5 available each week. No watering on Sunday and no watering on the designated day in your quadrant of the city. Large properties such as churches, schools, and parks are regulated under a separate, custom water conservation program based on each property. It is strongly recommended to delay any installation of new landscape sod and plantings. For more details, see the 2022 Water Restrictions on the city’s website syracuseut.gov. PUBLIC HEALTH SAFETY NOTICE: Sprinkling system connected to culinary water is extremely dangerous to public health and illegal. If this occurs, the entire secondary water system will be shut off to Syracuse City until it is found. Violators will be prosecuted. If you suspect a cross connection or are uncertain and would like a free inspection, call public works, or submit online fix-it request. CLEAN STORM WATER is important to our ecosystem. When washing vehicles, use a car wash or park vehicles on the lawn when washing the vehicle so the dirty water can infiltrate into the ground. Keep all fluids and spills contained and wiped
up. Do not wash down any debris from the driveway into the gutters and streets. TREES must be pruned to 7 feet over a sidewalk and 11 feet over the street. Clearances for driver visibility must be maintained for street signs and lights. Before planting new trees, allow space away from sidewalks to allow roots to grow without heaving the sidewalk and gutters. Keep trees away from street corners to allow visibility. Keep them away from your sewer pipe where roots could create blockages. City code 10.30.070 is a great resource for trees in our city.
Employee Spotlight - Troy Jamison Our employee spotlight for this month is Troy Jamison. Troy has been with Syracuse Fire Department since April 18, 1998. Throughout his career, he has continuously pushed himself to become educated in all areas of the fire service, EMS service, and higher college education. Troy received his Paramedic Certification in April 2013, making him the only full-time firefighter at the department to hold the title. He has since strived to share his knowledge and help both new recruits and seasoned veterans succeed and excel in their own careers. He diligently ensures that our department is adequately equipped with the medical supplies necessary to fulfill the EMS needs of the citizens of Syracuse. Troy is the “go to” for all things medical and will always find a solution to issues that may arise. He has a cool head on-scene during a crisis and shows respect to the families of the patients he encounters. Whether it is a “lights and sirens” call during rush hour traffic or an “Alpha” fall for an elderly neighbor at 2 a.m., he will always give each patient the respect, patience, and dignity they deserve. His professionalism shines on every call.

Fireworks Safety Tips
Each year during July 4th celebrations, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. These fires caused three deaths, 40 civilian injuries, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage. Please follow these safety tips from the National Safety Council (NSC) for a fun and enjoyable 4th of July celebration: < Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol. < Never allow young children to handle fireworks. < Older children should use fireworks only under close adult supervision. < Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear. < Never light fireworks indoors. < Only use fireworks away from people, houses, and flammable material. < Only light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting. < Never ignite fireworks in a container. < Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. < Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding. < Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire. Disaster Preparedness for your Pets Help protect pets by planning for and spreading the word about disaster preparedness BY JENNIFER EAGLE, SYRACUSE CITY DISASTER PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE
Disasters or emergencies can happen at any time and can come in many forms. Some emergencies may require only a few days away from home while others may require a more extended absence. Planning for and taking simple steps to prepare your furry family members for emergencies is the best thing that you can do for yourself and your pets. Pets come in all shapes and sizes; however, this article will primarily cover common household pets such as dogs and cats. The following tips can be applied to the emergency planning for other pets such as livestock, horses, birds, reptiles, or other small animals with additional planning and consideration. TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING A DISASTER 1. Don’t leave your pets at home. If it’s not safe for you to stay home during an emergency, it’s not safe for them either. 2. Prepare an emergency kit for your pet. According the American Red Cross, an emergency kit should include: • leash, harness and/or carriers to safely transport pets • food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter/pan, and a manual can opener if your pet eats canned food • medications and copies of medical records stored in a waterproof container
Your pet needs an emergency kit too! Make sure you have your pet’s medications in a waterproof container in case of emergency.
• Know which hotels along your evacuation route will accept pets in an emergency. • Prepare a list with phone numbers of friends/family, boarding facilities, animal shelters, or veterinarians who can care for your animals in the event of an emergency. • Include your pets in evacuation drills. • Train your pets to get comfortable in a pet carrier or kennel. Doing so will make transporting and potentially boarding them less stressful.

Passport application processing services are offered at City Hall between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Processing takes approximately 20-30 minutes per application. Until further notice, passport acceptance services are by appointment only. Please call 801-825-1477 to schedule your appointment. For multiple applications and/or photos, wait times may be longer. All required forms, photos, and payments must be completed prior to 4 p.m. to be accepted the same day. Applications can be found on the www.travel.state.gov website. It takes a special type of person to succeed in business. It takes hard work and grit because, sometimes, business is hard. Sometimes, you loose a key client or customer. Sometimes, people get mad at you for something that seems unfair. At other times, it seems that everything is just on fire and all you have is a squirt gun to try and douse the flames. Historically, women have had a harder time in business and had to fight for their rightful place. Today, in my personal observation, some of our most powerful business people are women business leaders. I am impressed every year when interviewing some of these amazing women at their strength and their passion for doing great things. These women don’t make excuses, and they get things done. I, for one, am inspired. This month, we have highlighted women from our community. Some are business owners, others are business leaders. They all play an important role in our local business community. We are honored to tell their stories and hope you will enjoy reading them.

Danielle Arana
Danielle Arana has always been involved in the people business. She is actually an introvert, but she has still been drawn to getting out of her comfort zone and working with people. She started noticing how important customer service was and how people were sometimes treated poorly. She has always wanted to be someone who can make people feel good about her and who they are, so they feel respected. Danielle loves working at Connection Publishing because, over the years, she has had many sales jobs that felt rushed and hurried. Here, she is asked to “connect” with her clients and get to know them better. It is right in line with her driving force to be a trusted friend and advisor.

Amberlee Bauman graduated from SUU and worked in several departments planning events; notably, she worked for the Shakespearean Festival. She then fell in love and moved to Northern Utah with her husband. She worked for the University of Utah and several Non Profits before taking a break to spend time with her family. She took a position at the Davis Chamber of Commerce and is the director of marketing and events. She has always wanted to be in event planning and, early in her career, was able to work with her mentor, Mindy Benson, who gave her a great step-up in the industry. When she plans and then executes her events, it gives her a thrill and an adrenaline rush. Her goal is to create events that are life-changing. She wants attendees who attend her events to meet someone or hear something that will make an impact in their life and change it for the good. Amberlee is married with two children.

Little did they know back in 1947 just how much of a family affair it would be. Over the next couple of generations, almost everyone in the Smedley family has worked at the company, and many still carry on the Smedley tradition today.

Turning donations into homes!
Wendy Vinhage is a key part of our local Habitat for Humanity. With over ten years’ experience working with nonprofits, she joined their organization when she moved to Utah from Pennsylvania. BY ANN PARK
“I
was really grateful to be able to come and work for this organization. In my experience, affordable housing has been an issue for many people. I’m glad we can help.” Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps limited-income families find a lower-cost path to home ownership. “We’re here to help people get into a home at an affordable price,” Wendy says. They build homes from the ground up but are also beginning a program to make minor exterior repairs to existing properties. This organization exists with all kinds of support from the community. Individuals and businesses have donated everything from land, to building supplies, to various volunteer labor. The process of building a home is complex. This program focuses on helping people to become successful, lifelong homeowners. It begins with applications, income requirements, and financial qualifications. Prospective home owners receive financial training and counseling and a credit check to make sure they are financially prepared. Habitat for Humanity is able to set up zerointerest mortgages that reduce the monthly payment required for a house and allow homeowners to build equity in their property. The home owners also provide hundreds of hours of hard work, which becomes sweat-
equity for their new home. The community has done great things to help Habitat for Humanity. Wendy says, “One of the last homes we built was designed by a WSU student as a practicum project.” Other students have volunteered to provide labor for our projects. “We’ve had lots of great help. It’s really a community effort.” The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a home improvement thrift store. “It’s our biggest fundraiser,” Wendy reports. “People can come here and buy supplies for their own projects or donate surplus items. You can find almost anything for a building project, and anyone can stop by and shop.” Habitat for Humanity is excited to continue their work in our community. hotography is another form of telling a story. I have seen two people take pictures of the same thing, and they tell totally different stories. Sometimes, one picture is much more striking and beautiful than another of the same thing. A good photographer must develop “the eye” that helps them see how to frame and capture awesome photos.
5 take My hope with these articles is to inspire you to go out and pictures of things that are most important to you and to get shots that you are happy about. I hope you will snap pictures of people you love and places that are dear to you. Photography is such a fun way to be creative and to capture and chronicle specific times in your life. When I am taking pictures of people, I love to come prepared with fun ideas and props to enhance my photos. I look on

Little toes & feet are so cute! Pinterest for poses and prop ideas and make a folder so I won’t forget all my ideas in the middle of a shoot. Even though I am copying ideas, they always come out uniquely because of the different personalities of my subjects, which is so fun.
Photography is such a fun way to be creative and to capture and chronicle specific times in your life.
My favorite props for pictures with children and teens are balloons, bubbles, and bubble gum. Anytime I use these things, I get the biggest smiles, sometimes involuntarily, which is very helpful. They also help me catch some candid photos of them having fun. It can bring out the happy side of any kid, big or small. Blankets, chairs, a chalkboard with a message on it can also be fun. I also love including pets, a favorite tree they love to climb, a bike that they ride every day, basketball or other sport accessories, or ballet shoes. Really, use anything that shows the interest of the target. I also like to go to the dollar store and get a pack of prop mustaches and tiaras and let people pick one they like. It is just for fun, and not every thing you use will be your favorite so try a few different ideas.

I often get the question from those being photographed, “What do I do with my hands?” I want hands to do something natural. It shouldn’t look awkward or stiff. Put them in your pocket or on your hips or even just let them hang at your side.

ontests to determine “who is the fairest of them all’’ have been around at least since ancient Greece and the Judgment of Paris. According to legend, a poor mortal goatherd, Paris, was called upon to settle a dispute among the goddesses. Who was the most beautiful: Hera, Aphrodite, or Athena? All three goddesses offered bribes. According to the writer Apollodorus, “Hera said that if she were preferred to all women, she would give him the kingdom over all men; Athena promised victory in

Luckily, the Miss Syracuse pageant here in Utah has not started any wars. The Miss Syracuse Pageant officially originated in 1955, when the Syracuse Lion’s Club began a scholarship competition for young women to earn money for college. In 1963, the Syracuse Lady Lions took over sponsoring the pageant. It ran until 1974. There was a break for several years until 2000, when it was brought back. Miss Teen Syracuse was added in 2005 in conjunction with Miss Utah/Miss America adding a Miss Teen category.

Their mission is as follows: Beyond talent and beauty, the Miss Syracuse Pageant represents the ideals of our community. Our goal is to inspire, motivate, and lift young women to the realization that they are strong, independent, capable young ladies who can accomplish anything they set their minds to. We hope that each of these young women in our community come away with more than just a title. We hope they see that the effects of a positive attitude, self-respect, respect for others, and the fulfillment of knowing that they are good role models will last much longer than beauty or a crown. The main focus on Miss Syracuse is the girl’s community service project and how it benefited the local area. Winners of Miss Syracuse and Miss Teen Syracuse receive a scholarship to Weber State and a cash scholarship awarded towards educational expenses. Titleholders also contribute community service hours per quarter, which include appearances at city-held events.

Instant Pot Honey Garlic Chicken

3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup honey 1/3 cup soy sauce 1/3 cup onion, diced 3 Tbsp. rice vinegar 2 Tbsp. sesame oil 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp. ginger 3 tsp. cornstarch, dissolved in 1/4 cup water Sesame seeds & green onion for topping Rice for serving
3 Tbsp. brown sugar 4 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. paprika 2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. ground mustard 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 (4-pound) boneless pork shoulder, excess fat trimmed and cut into 3-inch chunks 1 Tbsp. canola oil 1 cup chicken stock 6 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar, divided
Start by cutting chicken into cubes. Season well with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, onion, vinegar, oil, ginger, and garlic. Dissolve 3 tsp. of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of water in a small bowl and pour into your instant pot. Stir to combine with sauce. Push the saute button and cook sauce for about 5 minutes or until slightly thickened. Place your chicken in the bottom of the pressure cooker. Cook on the meat setting (or on HIGH pressure for non IP) for 15 minutes and then quick release once the 15 minutes is up. Serve with steamed broccoli and rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Set pressure cooker to the high saute setting. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, paprika, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, mustard, cayenne pepper, cumin, and pepper. Season pork with brown sugar mixture. Heat canola oil; working in two batches, add pork and cook until evenly browned, about 3-4 minutes.
Our BBQ pulled pork makes the best sandwiches! Just top with slaw, Kendal’s BBQ sauce, and pickles.

2 cups of brown sugar 1 bottle of ketchup 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes 4 Tbsp. minced garlic 2 Tbsp. onion powder 2 Tbsp. ground mustard 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper

Place apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, garlic, onion, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper in a sauce pan. Cook on stove top at medium heat. Bring to a boil. Whisk together until sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature.
Stir in chicken stock and 4 Tbsp. vinegar, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
Pour sauce into a jar or bottle. For best results, refrigerate one day before serving.
Select manual setting; adjust pressure to high and set time for 40 minutes. When finished cooking, quick-release pressure according to manufacturer’s directions.
Shake well before serving.
Remove pork shoulder from the pressure cooker and shred the meat using two forks; stir in remaining 2 Tbsp. vinegar
You can make this days ahead of time. The longer it sits, the more flavors that will come out. It’ll keep in the fridge for 21 days.

PASTA SALAD 12 oz. mini farfalle pasta (or other small pasta, like medium shells) 1/2 pound (½ bunch) asparagus with tough ends removed, then cut into 1-inch pieces 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped 1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 4 cups roughly chopped romaine lettuce 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 8 oz. thick cut bacon, cooked and chopped or buy pre-made bacon in salad dressing section 2 cups grilled or rotissere chicken, diced The best part of this salad- the zesty lemon chive dressing. Don’t leave out the fresh parm on top!

Rice Crispy Treats
No Bake Cookies
This recipe is super simple and fast to make. When I was a little girl, my mom would put M&Ms in our rice crispy treats on special occasions. I always loved when she did that. It was so fun!

2 cups granulated sugar ½ cup salted butter ½ cup milk (my favorite to use is whole milk) 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups oatmeal

2 bags of marshmallows rice crispy cereal 1 stick of butter M&Ms (optional)
1/3 cup olive oil 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 Tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest (approx. 1 lemon) 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. EACH sugar, dried oregano, dried parsley, and pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives Whisk together all of the Lemon Chive Dressing ingredients. Refrigerate until ready to use. Cook pasta in generously salted water just short of al dente, then add the asparagus to the pot and cook with the pasta for 1 more minute. Drain the pasta and asparagus, rinse with cold water, then toss with a drizzle of olive oil to keep pasta from sticking. Add all of the salad ingredients to a large bowl. Once pasta has cooled, add Lemon Chive Dressing and toss until evenly coated. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste (I like more pepper). Serve immediately.
My favorite way to make these is with a glass bowl and microwave. Put the marshmallow and butter in the bowl and microwave for a minute at a time until the marshmallows are melty. Pour in Rice Crispy cereal, slowly, as you stir it all together. I love my rice crispy treats extra marshmallowy. Once you have it at your favorite consistency, dump it into a pan and let it sit for 30 minutes or so to cool and set. YUMMY!!
In a large pot, add sugar, butter, milk, and cocoa powder. Slowly bring to a boil while whisking. Once it gets to a bowl, allow it to boil for 1 minute. Take your pot off the stove and add oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well. Spoon dough onto parch paper or foil and let cool.
