Weber County Commission Recognizes Weber Parks and Recreation Our office received a wonderful message from a member of our community, Alyssa Florack-Hess, expressing gratitude to Weber County Parks and Recreation for saving her wedding. We want to extend enormous gratitude to our Parks and Recreation Department for the amazing service work they do each and every day for our community. “I wanted to write a message to say a HUGE thank you to the team at Weber County Parks & Rec. I had been planning a wedding at some family property in Huntsville for over a year for the weekend of October 8-10, 2021, and had about 200 folks who had RSVP’d to come into town. Unfortunately, two weeks before the wedding, on a Friday night, my family member who owned the property suddenly changed his mind and told us we wouldn't be able to have the wedding there. Panic ensued. We were devastated at the idea of not being able to have the weekend we'd spent over a year planning and thought we might just have to cancel the whole thing and head to the courthouse. My sister got in contact with Ashley Earl, who was immediately helpful and responsive with the great news that Weber County Memorial Park would still be open for the weekend. We couldn't believe our luck, and Ashley and her team were so amazing and supportive, quickly setting up a time for me to visit the campground with the campground host Don Brewster. As we walked around the beautiful campground, looking at the changing leaves and the lodge, my motherin-law and I shared quite a few tears - realizing that this weekend would be even better than the one we had originally planned. In every opportunity, the Weber County Parks & Rec team was accommodating, flexible, and unbelievably helpful as they rushed to save my wedding day. I just wanted to write to you here to let you know of the incredible experience I had working with this group of people and to express my gratitude for the important and caring folks working in our public parks. Most of all, I hope their team receives budgetary and policy support from you and your office for the important difference they have made in mine and so many other people's lives. Thank you so much!” Alyssa Florack-Hess

Deputy Farnum Saves Child’s Life by Jumping in the Driver’s Seat
O
N 10/24/21, DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO A HEADON COLLISION CAR ACCIDENT ORIGINALLY DISPATCHED TO UTAH HIGHWAY PATROL AT MM 15 SR 39 BETWEEN A TRUCK AND A PASSENGER CAR. Deputy Farnum from the WCSO self-dispatched and was the first Law Enforcement Officer on scene. Deputy Farnum quickly went to work, calling out plate numbers and assessing the scene to see what needed to be done. Upon arrival, crews quickly determined the driver of the passenger vehicle was deceased, the front seat passenger was in critical condition, and the rear seat passenger was in extremely critical condition. The driver of the truck had severe injuries, and all would need to be extricated. Deputy Farnum assisted the medical and fire crew who were busy trying to access and extricate the four victims. One patient, who was the rear seat passenger of the car, was a 9-year-old female in extremely critical condition with severe head trauma. It was reported the 9-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt. Medical crews determined the female needed to be transported to the nearest trauma center immediately, and the transport could not be delayed waiting for other medical teams to arrive. Due to bad weather, medical helicopters were not able to fly, complicating an already chaotic scene. With medical and fire personnel spread thin due to the number of patients and the complicated process of extricating four patients, the ambulance crew asked Deputy Farnum if he could drive the ambulance while medics attended to the injured 9-year-old inside. Deputy Farnum, having prior experience driving an ambulance, did not hesitate and immediately jumped into action and drove the ambulance to McKay Dee Hospital.
If not for the quick action of Deputy Farnum and the Weber Fire Department, this 9-year-old would not be with us today.
Deputy Farnum then returned to the scene and assisted in any way he could. Deputy Farnum was commended on his excellent driving of the ambulance, and it was reported that he drove “fast and efficient”. In closing, Deputy Farnum is making the Sheriff’s Office a better place because he works here. At the hospital, the 9-year-old patient was admitted to the ICU in extremely critical condition with a slim chance of surviving through the night. Upon further follow-up days later, the Sheriff’s Office was notified the child was out of her coma, talking to hospital staff, and looking forward to being released from the hospital to return home to continue healing.

Smart Growth The focus on economic development in Weber County
C
BY JENNY GOLDSBERRY
ommissioner Gage Froerer comes from a long line of REALTORS®. For four generations his family “peddled dirt” as he likes to say. His forefathers started the business in Weber County in 1900. Today, he’s focused on a different type of real estate: the kind that focuses on economic growth for the entire county. Together with Economic Development Director Stephanie Russell and Northern Utah Economic Alliance President Chris Roybal, Gage stimulates the economy in Weber County. Before their partnership, counties often competed with other counties for businesses’ attention, vying to tie them down to real estate within their boundaries. However, it wasn’t effective or even beneficial for the locals. At the end of the day, companies don’t care about boundaries, but convenience and costs. Enter Chris, whose new organization encompasses Weber and Davis. He’s seen how companies care more about where their labor pool is coming from over county lines. “The workforce we have here is amazing,” Stephanie said. Now, her job is to make sure the talented workforce stays. She looks at the northern Utah region with a holistic approach, examining the assets and demographics to build quality of life. Every day, 100,000 people commute out of Weber and Davis County to their various jobs along the Wasatch Front. In return, about 50,000 people commute into the same region from elsewhere.
This commute might not seem like much now, but in 10 years it could take an hour or more just to get to Salt Lake. Since it is the capital, work travel to Salt Lake City will never be completely eliminated, but the goal is to keep more skilled workers in the county. A short commute greatly contributes to quality of life. Less time on the road means less road rage, boredom, pollution, etc. When the Ogden Defense Depot was transformed into the Business Depot, local officials anticipated it would take years for companies to fill up all the vacancies. At capacity, BDO will have about 15 million square feet of space. Its growth in the last 5 years has escalated significantly over the previous 15. Now the space is nearly capped out, with only one to two million square feet remaining. It’s proof that there is demand for northern Utah’s workforce, and companies are willing to settle here. Yet, the companies settling here aren’t only new. Gage used to hate to see local funds go to outside companies when his family’s company had been around since 1900. Local companies need just as much help expanding and staying in the region. In fact, this partnership is so committed to small local businesses that they distributed $45 million to 116 companies. The average payout was $15,000. These payouts came from American Rescue and CARE funds. While other cities took the

opportunity to put that into their funds, northern Utah decided to put it first in small business.
In this case, Weber County is being very proactive in order to retain the new jobs the site will create.
Their latest project is the West Weber Mega Site. It has the potential for 20 million square feet of industrial space. The location is seven miles West of I-15 with adjacent rail, 14 miles to commercial air travel at Ogden-Hinkley Airport. Not only are there six universities and colleges within a 30-mile radius, but also have two applied technology colleges on board to supply key workforce via internships at first, and then full-time opportunities. Beyond that, there’s a population of over 600,000 in the region. Already there are 47 million square feet of industrial product in northern Utah, but there’s only a 1.6% vacancy rate. The Mega Site will be the future home of the next generation of manufacturing companies in Northern Utah.
Years ago, this site was zoned as an industrial site. This came long before there was any dream of a mega site. By now it’s nearly shovel-ready. It’s predicted to create roughly 25,000 jobs. The mega site will be the area’s biggest opportunity for manufacturing jobs. As a state, Utah is number two in the nation for manufacturing according to Site Selection Group. We’re also the fastest growing state. The Ogden-Clearfield area was ranked as the seventh

youngest city in the nation, toting a population of 54.1% under 35 years of age. Northern Utah must be proactive to prepare for a future of a larger, more skilled population.
Stephanie, Chris, and Gage want all of Weber County to know that they’re being smart about the growth and making an attempt to manage it. Their goal is to create jobs for generations, so that locals can be employed in an area where they don’t have to leave. Other areas might define economic growth some other way, but here, it comes down to jobs.
West Weber Mega Site The site has potential for over 20 million square feet of industrial space with over 25,000 high-paying jobs.
Maybe this is conjuring a picture of a space for telemarketers. That is not the goal of this partnership. The focus is on advanced manufacturing jobs. Only companies offering high-quality and high-paying jobs are accepted into the mega site. These jobs aren’t just meant to attract today’s workers, but continuing to attract future generations to remain in the area. Next there is possibly a worry about housing a new generation of workers. Stephanie would like you to know that “density” is not a dirty word. Currently the entire state of Utah and the country are frankly experiencing a housing crisis. Urban planning is the responsible way to grow economically. Already there are plans for workforce housing: the typical smaller house lots in sizes large, medium, and small. Most successful governments are proactive not reactive.

MARIKO ROLLINS-
ENCOURAGING LEADERSHIP AT THE ICE SHEET
BY MARIKO ROLLINS- DIRECTOR, THE ICE SHEET AT THE WEBER COUNTY SPORTS COMPLEX
W
eber County Sports Complex Director, Mariko Rollins, had wanted to grow up to be an Urban Planner and Community Designer. What she had never anticipated is that she would end up building a community of sorts: one within an ice arena in Weber County that has had international reach. Her goals shifted as she began college at Weber State University and coaching at The Ice Sheet -- site of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and Curling Events.
“The Ice Sheet quickly became part of my college experience at Weber State University and helped give me a sense of community. I had always relied on the culture of ice arenas to help me get through tough times and inspire me as a skater. What I didn’t realize back then was that this facility is about so much more than practices and games; this is where figure skaters, hockey players, curlers, coaches, and fans come to take part in building a thriving community,” stated Rollins.
8 WeberCountyConnection.com | March-April 2022
The dynamic program growth the rink has experienced in recent years is due, in part, to her background in ice dance -- a discipline of figure skating -- and her passion for coaching power skating -- a training aspect of competitive ice hockey. Rollins reflected, “Coaching taught me the leadership qualities I needed to improve my everyday experiences and shape my life.” Mariko’s desire to replicate leadership building by implementing targeted initiatives within all levels of Weber County Youth Hockey is what fuels the program and provides leadership opportunities to players. Rollins further commented that “Unshakable leadership is built on the backs of conflict resolution, struggle, and working together to produce an outcome that team members have bought into through organic core culture attributes. Too many people think that leadership is an abstract quality that only others possess, when, in reality, leaders are built throughout our community every day as they work together to overcome hardship and problem solve.” “I have a responsibility to this community to teach athletes the tools to become leaders. That’s what our core values at the Weber County Sports Complex are all about, from part time employees on up. We work together to produce the very best outcome possible for these athletes. Whether
it’s figure skaters, hockey players, or curlers, each staff member plays a part in their development, and that’s what makes this facility so special,” stated Rollins. An aspect of building on the legacy of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and curling events is to continue to prepare bids for future Olympic games and provide a safe and inspiring training environment for all athletes that includes encouraging every athlete to work hard and dream big. “Several athletes from both figure skating and hockey have gone on to national and international competitions and teams as a result of working hard and dreaming big.” Maintaining a balance of grassroots initiatives while having an impact
“I have a responsibility to this community to teach athletes the tools to become leaders. That’s what our core values at the Weber County Sports Complex are all about." of national-bound athletes, Rollins hopes to continue growing sustainable community programs within Weber County and the State of Utah.

COUNTY UPDATES
Weber County
AND
2021 2022 OUTLOOK WRAP UP
As the new year starts, we plan for the future and reflect on the lessons and successes of the past. While this may come as a surprise to many reading this, our county and elected officials are not perfect. We know: imperfect people in elected office is almost inconceivable. Add in a pandemic, and you may be left in awe at the confusion. Joking aside, in Weber County, every person at the county office, both elected and employed, is doing their absolute best to serve you at a high level. While the last two years have been unbelievably difficult to manage, as commissioners, we are grateful for the outpouring of community support. While we could all make a list of things that we struggled with over the last year, we wanted to provide you with information on what went right.
FINANCIAL STATE OF THE COUNTY
ECONOMIC LEADERSHIP
•
CARES Act funding: Weber County dispersed $44,866,708 to cities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, and hospitals in critical COVID relief funding.
•
Bonds Refinanced: The library system bond was refinanced at a lower rate, saving over $2 million in interest.
•
•
Financial Rating: Weber County was awarded an AAA bond rating. This award is given to only 72 out of 3,006 counties nationally, putting us in the top 2.39% in the country.
We kicked off sewer and water studies in both the Upper Valley and West Weber with an estimated completion date in the fall of 2022.
•
We are updating the Weber County Master Plan. In parts of the county, the master plan hasn’t been updated in more than 20 years.
•
There are continued negotiations to add hundreds of millions of investment dollars and jobs to West Weber.
•
Most importantly, we are laser-focused on development that empowers our children to want to live and work here.
COUNTY CULTURE •
•
•
Our residents are represented well geographically across the county with Commissioners living in Plain City, Unincorporated Weber County, and the Ogden Valley. There is synergy amongst the Commissioners with their diverse life experiences as business owners in many industries. The morale in the county offices is great. Our employees are respected, listened to, and appreciated. By improving morale, we improved the efficiency of our staff and their ability to give superior service to our citizens.
10 WeberCountyConnection.com | March-April 2022
• Commissioner Froerer was appointed to the Governor’s Unified Economic Opportunity Commission. He is the only County Commissioner in the state to be invited.
THANK YOU!
"While the last two years have been unbelievably difficult to manage, as commissioners, we are grateful for the outpouring of community support."
COMMISSIONERS WRAP UP Now, if you’ll allow us, we would like to highlight county projects we are, personally, very proud of. As Commissioners, we each have different departments and programs we oversee and love to give credit to the amazing work of our Weber team.
Commissioner Gage Froerer
Weber County dispersed CARES Act dollars first to the community and last to their bank account. Many counties did the opposite. A total disbursement of $44,866,708 went to cities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, and hospitals in critical COVID relief funding. The personal messages of gratitude from small businesses and individuals describing receiving that aid were emotionally overwhelming. We worked hand-in-hand with Weber County Treasurer John Bond and his incredible team to smash our bond rating goal.
Commissioner Scott Jenkins
The Weber Center of Excellence increased the number of families in poverty that are benefiting from their programs. Those numbers jumped from 40 to 200, creating a positive impact for their family generations to come. The Transfer Station went from operating every year in debt to becoming a profitable asset. With the machinery purchased, we can save an additional $48,000 annually by not leasing the equipment.
Commissioner Jim HarveyCulture, Parks, and Recreation/Tourism
Travel and tourism stayed up 94.7% through COVID. By tourism staying up, your tax dollars stayed down.
We opened three yurts in Weber.
The Weber County Archery Park had a banner year and building expansion.
We successfully hosted the 2021 World Disc Golf Championship.
The Golden Spike Arena continues to host over 600 events annually, including the Weber County Fair- the largest fair in the state of Utah.
While the world waited for conferences and gatherings to return, we installed a brand new state-of-the-art lighting system and seating in the Egyptian Theater. The lighting was entirely funded by a private donor, and the seating funding was provided by the State of Utah.
In efforts to improve air quality, we halted the methane gas program.
In Conclusion We are grateful we get to work with exceptional elected officials and department heads who are focused on service and making Weber County the best place to live, work, and play. They are tireless in their efforts, and we thank them for their commitment to you. Thank you for allowing us to serve as your county commissioners. We are excited for all that 2022 will bring, and you can count on us to continue serving you and building the community we love so dearly.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Our amphitheater project is ramping up. We are excited about this new addition to our city and the opportunities and possibilities it will offer to our residents. One of the city’s goals is to offer more diversity in artistic and cultural programs and experiences. The addition of this amphitheater will be a tremendous pathway for these prospects. As we approach spring, please remember that warmer weather means more people outside. Please help us keep our city safe by locking your cars, closing garage doors, and checking that your home is secure before you leave or turn in for the evening. Watch out for your neighbors and report any suspicious activity to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office. We can all help reduce crime by looking out for each other.
NOW HIRING PUBLIC WORKS We are hiring! We are looking for a parttime crossing guard. Please go to our website for full details at plaincityutah.org
Our city is growing, and the need for volunteers in our Fire Department is too! If you’d like to get involved, please contact the Fire Department at 801-7311110 for more information. -Jon Beelsey, Mayor 14 WeberCountyConnection.com | March-April 2022

CITY UPDATES
Marriott-Slaterville Spring Gardening
Spring is springing, and March is the perfect time of the year to garden. Marriott-Slaterville was proudly designed in 1999 as Utah’s Open Space City. Since that time, our community has encouraged gardening, fostered conservation, and promoted sustainable development. Each summer, the Marriott-Slaterville Garden Market opens with local vendors who bring their garden surplus to share with the community. So, put on your gloves and get out your spade to plant your garden space. Also, consider that gardening is an excellent way to improve mental and physical well-being. With all the stresses and conflict in our daily lives, gardening is an excellent activity for self-care. Here are some ways that gardening can help our well-being: •
•
•
Burns Calories: Gardening is considered moderate- to highintensity exercise. You can burn up to 330 calories during a one-hour session of gardening or yard work.
SPRING IS COMING! Here are som e gardening tips!
helps you soak up Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium to keep bones strong and the immune system healthy. •
Happiness: Research involving active participation with nature and gardening provides psychological benefits such as lower stress, increased self-esteem, and improved social interaction.
Even if you have never gardened before, it is fun to learn. March is a great time to prepare. •
Prune trees and shrubs as needed.
•
Trim perennials.
•
Clean-up your yard as the soil thaws.
•
When it warms enough, prepare an area for a garden.
•
When planting, note soil quality, plant size, and light.
•
This month, plant your early coldloving vegetables, like peas, carrots, radishes, and onions. Inside your home, you can start growing seed, like tomatoes and peppers, to transplant in May. When May arrives, it is usually the best time to plant corn, squash, beets, other vegetables, and flowers..
Lower Blood Pressure: Just 30 minutes of moderate-level physical activity a few times a week can help control high blood pressure. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends gardening on its list for addressing high blood pressure. Immune System: Outdoor sunshine
Gardening is fun! Bring your harvest to the MarriottSlaterville Garden Market this summer to sell and share with the community.
General Burning Regulations The State of Utah issues burn permits; Weber Fire District no longer issues them. Burn permits are to be obtained from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Here is the link to their website: https://air.utah.gov/OpenBurning/form/index.php. Permits may be issued between March 30 and May 30 and between September 15 and October 30. You cannot obtain

The Ten Basics of Square Foot Gardening
These days, there is a lot of interest in square-foot gardening. These gardens fit neatly in the back yard or in other small areas. Create a square-foot garden with the following steps:
@
Layout. Square-foot gardens are arranged in squares rather than rows. The layout is typically 4’ X 4’ planting boxes.
@
Boxes: Build elevated planting boxes and fill them with a fresh new soil mix.
@
Aisles: Space the boxes around three feet apart, so that there are walking aisles to access the boxes.
@
Soil Mix: Fill boxes with a special soil mix you can find at your local nursery or create your own with 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite.
@
Grid: Make a permanent squarefoot grid across the top of each planting box.
@
Care: Avoid walking on your growing soil. Tend your garden from the aisles.
@
Select: Plant a different flower, vegetable, or herb crop in each square foot, using 1, 4, 9, or 16 plants per square foot.
@
Planting: Plant a pinch (two or three seeds) per hole. Plant transplants in depressed hole filled with water.
@
Water: Water by hand or from sprinkler as needed.
@
Harvest: Harvest as the garden ripens over the summer. Add compost and replant it with a new or different crop the next gardening season.
a burn permit until the burn window begins. Yard burning requires a valid burn permit issued during the open burn window. The burning of trash, rubbish, tires, hazardous material, or oil products is not allowed. Agriculture burning of ditches, fence lines, and stubble is allowed at other times, so contact Weber Fire District at 801-782-3580, extension 206. For questions, contact the Utah Division of Air Quality at 801536-4000 or Weber Fire District.

CITY UPDATES Mayors Message West Haven City Is Ready For Business!
W
ith our growing population of over 19,000 residents, West Haven City is the place businesses are looking for; however, our residential development has far outpaced our commercial development. In fact, in the last eight years, 91% of the city’s development has been residential. When this occurs, residents must travel to neighboring municipalities for work and to also purchase goods and services. Sales tax is our current largest revenue source for our municipality to provide services to its residents, such as roads, water and sewer, policing contract protection, parks, recreation facilities, etc. New commercial development within West Haven City means residents benefit not only from better access to products and services but from the sales taxes generated from capital investments into the area as well. With neighboring cities being built out, our city will be the best-suited for residents’ needs of food and entertainment-related growth. Plus, our city has well-educated and tech-related skills to add to the workforce and the need to provide well-paying jobs to help in addressing the affordable housing crisis. The city is poised to finally be truly “ready for business.” The city’s development goals, strategies, and actions focus on optimizing our resources to provide the following benefits to residents and businesses: 1. Establish a well-balanced and sustainable economic base through strengthening the city’s sales tax base, currently offering zero property tax, and buying power through well-paying jobs 2. Preserve and enhance the identity of our main corridors for commercial growth 3. Create friendly neighborhoods and centers that focus on close-to-home jobs, shopping, and recreation into places where residents and others can gather and interact regularly 4. Encourage well-organized and efficiently planned community development zones that provide regional and county benefits
West Haven West Haven Heritage Days- 2022 West Haven is preparing for another exciting year of full city celebrations. Please mark your calendars for our Heritage days. Our celebration has something for everyone, from young mutton busters to our vintage teenagers. If you have a classic car, truck, or motorcycle, or like to look at others’ pride and joy, be sure to come and see the “best burn out competition” in intermountain states. We have about 450 cars attending and have a “loud and proud exhaust contest” that is ranked in the top three shows in Utah. Our rodeo is one of the best “hometown” western rodeos in the county. It is free to the public, very entertaining, and has outstanding livestock. We have our youth rodeo with several events that bring great family entertainment. Our adult rodeo is as western as it gets. It is sure to keep your head reeling from bucking events to roping and running events. Our fireworks show is fantastic and is proceeded by a great concert. The best part of this year is the new additions that will be added. We are turning up the heat and pulling out the stops for 2022. Join us for a family-friendly celebration.
June 21st through the 25th 2022 Parade- Fireworks - West Haven City Aquatic Center Night – West Haven “Power in the Park Car Show” – West Haven City Quilt Show- West Haven Baby Contest- Youth Rodeo- Adult Rodeo- 5K RunBike Ride- Concert in the Park- Movie in the ParkPicnic in the Park – Breakfast- Multiple Food and Product Vendors and Much More!
5. Invite and encourage commercial development within West Haven City by creating an efficient, supportive, and reliable commercial development on our General Plan West Haven City can only brag about our current business and the support we give to them. We have the best people because they value our “country heritage” but want their money going back into their city’s pocket for improvements. We want to find balance in our lives by building a dynamic, accessible community. We have built the rooftops over the past eight years; now is our time for retail expansion. Mayor Rob Vanderwood

YOU HAVE VOTED, AND THE RESULTS ARE IN!
Weber County 2021 Favorites
RESULTS ISSUE
The voting results for your Connection Publishing Favorites Readers Poll 2021 are in! What an exciting year, as we had double the number of votes cast and some exciting new categories. We also saw some new businesses come in and take prizes in their category beating out strong rivals who may have won last year. I find these polls fascinating because it tells you a story when a business wins, that means people had to have done business with them and like them enough to write in their name in our poll. These businesses have built brands and offerings that people love enough to vote for them. It is a great honor to these companies to be listed as your favorite or runner up. There were some very tight races as well, we even had some multi-way ties.
We hope you enjoy, as much as we do, reading about which businesses are your and your neighbors Favorite businesses in 2021.
Thanks for all who participated.

Founding Farmers: The Wayments BY JENNY GOLDSBERRY
C
ody Wayment is a fourthgeneration farmer. His great grandpa, Nephi Wayment, and his son, Edward Jay Wayment, started feeding cattle in 1939. Nephi already had land of his own. Edward Jay would go on to buy 50 acres for $12,000. At first, they had 60 cattle. Back then, cattle cost 25 cents a pound.
Cody and his son enjoy taking a break from their demanding farming lifestyle to get in some fun playtime. Nephi really settled Warren, along with his eight brothers. As his brothers left town, he bought their land. The family built a home, two farmhouses, and two rental properties by the 40s. In his day, they worked the land by hand. All they had was a tractor and a pull-behind (a flatbed trailer). They hand-shoveled the corn silage from the ground and into the cattle’s’ troughs.
Nephi and Edward raised fat steers. They would take those steers to market for beef. At any given time, they had anywhere from 700 to 800 head of fat steers. As a result, they had to grow more corn to feed them. Their first mechanical feed truck didn’t arrive until the 60s. Less than 20 years later, the cattle market crashed. Suddenly, Edward had to borrow money at 13% to buy cattle. Many of his colleagues in the cattle industry went broke. As soon as he got his check in the mail for the cattle he sold, he’d hustle to Salt Lake to cash it because, otherwise, that extra day of 13% interest would cost him a day’s wage. Even then, Edward would only have a paycheck for two to three months a year. Amidst the tough market, Edward decided to transition industries, and he began raising dairy heifers instead. He hosted and raised them, at times, selling them to local dairy farms. By the time Cody was around eight years old, there were seven dairy farmers in the area. When he was too little to reach the clutch, he hauled hay by hand. He’d line up the bales in the field, pick them off, and stack them on the back of the truck. Even then, he wasn’t quite big enough to pick up the bales, but he could roll them in line. Next, it came time for Jim, Cody’s father, to transition into taking over the farm. Jim bought some mother cows, which they used to raise baby
calves that they sold in the fall. Next, they started feeding other people’s calves. They still had all the farming equipment necessary to raise up calves to become heifers or fat steers. Today, there is only one dairy farm in the area. Cody can sell calves for $1.70 a pound. Back when his great grandfather started, he was buying them for 25 cents. The family 4250 tractor they bought in 1988 cost them around $40,000, but, today, that same tractor with the same horsepower costs $160,000. Any loans he needs come at about 3% interest. His family farm is about 500 acres, with 50/50 farmland and pasture. They grow 150-200 acres of corn each year and have 300 acres of alfalfa hay, all while renting another 400 acres. A lot has changed about the farming industry, but it’s come with many benefits. His four kids now understand where their food comes from. The Wayments have an awe-inspiring respect for nature, as they see rainstorms and unsuccessful births cost them hundreds and thousands of dollars. Still, they’re huge advocates for agriculture. His brother-in-law, Ray Smalley, teaches agriculture at Roy High, and his parents remain involved in the Farm Bureau presidency. Together, they have a love for the farming lifestyle in every direction.

Bolo ties are popular even for women now. Mixing many jewelry looks in one outfit is completely okay now, so blend all your favorites for a fun look. The most popular belts are the tooled, colored, and concho belts. There are so many choices for boots and shoes now! Again, embroidered and tooled with so many styles and colors make for a fun look to match your clothes with. Short boots are even more popular than last year. Get some in an animal print to spice up any outfit. Look for shoes and boots from Corral West, Lane, Tony Lama, Justin, and American Darling.
Market
Trends
It’s that time of year when retailers around the world descend on the many wholesale markets going on throughout the United States, where they can see what’s new and available for this year.
BY ELIZABETH BECKY HOUGAARD
With Dallas WESA just finishing up and Vegas Magic coming up, it can make my mind spin. There are so many amazing things to choose from. The greatest thing is that so many retailers get to pick what appeals to them and their local customers. This is why you see so much variety in the stores. With my leaning to the Western lines and crossovers, here is what I saw as the strongest looks for the next season:
Color is in! Wear bold bright colors and soft pastels for spring. The neutrals are still strong, and you’ll still see those with more of a mixture of neutral colors in an outfit. I saw more florals than ever, which I love! There were floral tops and dresses, ruffles, bell sleeves, floral embroidered jackets and jeans, and boots that are just beautiful. Velvet was shown a lot too. Love the velvets! So comfy! Serape is as strong as ever. Wear serape in tops, pants, vests, and handbags with some denim or tooled leather. It’s always a great look. Also, for tops and jackets,
you’ll see checks and plaids in many colors. This is such a great classic look The choices in jeans are amazing! You can get boot cut, straight leg, wide leg, and bell bottoms, and they are all in style. Plain, blinged, embroidered, they are all great. Some of my favorites are from Ariat, Grace in LA, Miss me, Lucky & Blessed, Cowgirl Tuff, and Kimes Ranch, but there are so many more to check out! There are also some colored jeans that are so fun now.
We also saw so many colors, prints, and sizes of scarves that you can use to keep warm or just to add some color and style to anything you’re wearing. I Love the scarves from Wyoming Traders and Fringe Scarves, but there are many local people that make them, so look for them at local boutiques and horse shows! Remember to get what’s comfortable and that you can wear anything that makes you feel great. There really are no rules!
How to reach me
As always, if there is a look or certain item you are looking for, let me know! I will do my best to find it for you. Send any requests or questions to Becky Hougaard @ RockinHH@gmail.com.
ACCESSORIES!
The jean jackets are really popular. You’ll see your basic jean jackets, but some fun ones have serape mixed in, fringe, embroidery, bling, and also animal prints in different colors. Scully, Wrangler, Ariat, and Crazy Train have some great denim Jackets. If you need a CC Denim jacket, look at Wyoming Traders!
For accessories, the tooled leather and fringe is still so strong, and I love it! Colorful
stones, especially turquoise with silver, is still the most popular, look for jewelry.

New calves are a wonderful sign of spring
Spring is Springing Upon Us BY THATCH ELMER
Calves are making their way into the world, mountain trees are starting to bloom a beautiful green, and a certain feeling of “we made it” is upon us. REFLECTIONS OF A
cowboy
S
pring is right around the corner, folks. Calves are making their way into the world, mountain trees are starting to bloom a beautiful green, and a certain feeling of “we made it” is upon us. Every year around this time, it takes me back to growing up in rural America and to how much I loved the spring season, when horses started shedding winter coats, green grass started to show from warm day snow melt, and the air was sharp and fresh. I still get this feeling, and a certain amount of excitement runs through me when the sun creeps to its highest point, and I can finally shed my coat and lean into the warmth. I loved the feeling of not having to drain water hoses and break ice in water troughs, not having to bundle up, and not having to shovel snow. I loved watching a newborn calf run through the field and bask in the sun. I loved the days getting longer each day and the mud turning into hard ground.
And I still do… This year, that feeling hasn’t changed one bit. I still get the same exact excitement I used to each and every day, and, this year, maybe even a bit more. I say that because this “new normal” we have lived in the last two years is starting to actually feel normal. Getting to walk into the feed store and shake a friend’s hand and getting to talk the cattle market with partners at the sale barn is something I think we have all craved throughout the last couple years. I’m grateful the new normal is back to normal. I have full intentions on making the most out of the warm spring weather and taking in every ounce of daylight I get. I think we all should. Bring the bike out, saddle your horse, grab your light jacket, and enjoy it with me. Spring is springing upon us, ladies and gentlemen; it’s back and better than ever. Let’s make it the best one.

Sunsets & Windmills BY RACHEL BITTON
The first house we bought just before getting married was the cutest old, red brick, Victorian house. It was surrounded by massive trees and the
most beautiful old rose bushes. I never wanted to leave that house, but as our family started growing, we knew something had to change. I love anything old, vintage, antique, and rustic. When we set out to build a new house, I decided I wanted our house and barnyard to look like they were plucked out of life 100 years ago.
fe r a l
FARMHOUSE I never get tired of seeing our beautiful sunsets behind that big windmill. Windmills and sunsets are two of my favorite things. Now, I get to see them together.
I set out on a hunt for an old, large windmill. My husband said it would require a crane to lift and a crane to reset it. I don’t know why, but he figures out how to make my wild requests become reality. I searched for over two years at farm auctions, online, local classifieds, Facebook marketplace, etc. When I finally found my windmill, I was over-the-moon excited. I then had to wait weeks for a crane to make the time for such a small job. Luckily, the windmill came from a neighboring town, in the backyard of a house in a subdivision. The crane carefully lifted my windmill without disturbing anything in the yard we were removing it from and gently laid it down on our hay wagon. We ratchet-strapped and secured it for the slow drive west to our home. I have decided that my husband can accomplish just about anything with ratchet straps – from welding fence into place to moving windmills, panels, etc. Some guys use duct tape – my dad had a weird love of plywood for his projects – but my husband’s thing is ratchet straps. He says ratchet straps are like having extra hands. My husband used ratchet straps and the tractor to carefully
remove the windmill from the wagon, and it laid in our barn yard for almost another year before we decided on its final place. We could not get a crane to come set it; no one wanted to do such a small job. My husband rented a Gradall, used his favorite ratchet straps, and set the windmill over the front yard fence into place. I even got to take a turn moving the windmill on the Gradall. The windmill was then welded onto brackets cemented into the ground. We were very thankful a good neighbor showed up to help. The night the windmill went in, we had a bad windstorm, but it stood strong. It’s been in place for months now, but I never get tired of seeing our beautiful sunsets behind that big windmill. Windmills and sunsets are two of my favorite things. Now, I get to see them together.

Brackyn Davis Brackyn Davis is a 14-year-old student at Rocky Mountain Junior High and lives in West Haven, Utah. He loves math and history, and he enjoys fishing, hunting, and baseball. Brackyn has played baseball for West Haven City, where he was on the All-Star team three years in a row. This well-mannered, polite young man is also a member of 4H, where he shows sheep and hogs. He related that his biggest 4H project was raising his show lambs from birth to show age. He has been involved in several generations of breeding and raising his own family’s sheep. Brackyn is a member of the Rocky Mountain Jackpot Association and enjoys jackpotting his lambs and
Keiley Mitchell is just as fun and exuberant as she is motivated. This positive and accomplished young lady is a 16-year-old Junior at Fremont High School and hails from West Haven, Utah. She is a member of the FFA, where she is a committee chair and says that she really enjoys floriculture and greenhouse. Keiley is attending cosmetology school while she goes to high school. To say she has goals is an understatement. She loves riding dirt bikes, motorcycles, and playing softball. Keiley started showing steers in the Champion Makers 4H group; she is still showing steers as an FFA member. She shared that her most challenging year was the
hogs throughout the year. He loves traveling, jackpotting lambs, making new friends, and catching up with old ones. His most memorable win was in 2017 at the Weber County fair, where he won Jr. Showmanship and his first buckle. Brackyn repeated that success with his hog in 2019. He qualified for his first national show at the 2021 NILE Stock Show, where he ended up placing in the top five. Brackyn says that he loves 4H because he has learned to never give up and never stop showing, no matter what. He has also learned responsibility, hard work, and patience. He plans to continue showing lambs and hogs throughout High School. Brackyn then plans to attend vet school, where he can continue to help animals as a veterinarian.
first one. Keiley says it takes a lot of time, patience, and strength to have a steer project; however, she learned so much and has been able to apply it to following years. Her biggest win was coming in fourth in her class and 20th overall at the Weber County Fair. 4H and FFA have taught Keiley valuable life lessons beyond the show pen. She has learned the value of hard work, responsibility, financing, and dedication. She says, “I love the knowledge I have gained from 4H and FFA. I also love all of the experiences I have had and the friends I have made.” When asked where she will be in five years, she said she hopes to be married with a family and have a little farm raising some of her own cows.

Drain all water 4 hours prior to cooking, sprinkle, mix well, and keep in a bowl for 2 hours. Wash under cold water until all of the soda is rinsed away. Place beans in a large saucepan, add enough water to cover, bring to the boil, add two tea-bags (for color), and keep on medium heat until chick peas are cooked and soft when pressed between thumb and forefinger – 20 minutes. Remove and discard tea-bags. Or, rinse and drain 12 oz. tinned garbanzo beans, sprinkle with
1/2 tsp. bicarbonate of soda, mix well, and keep for 30 minutes. Rinse in cold water to remove soda coating. Put in a saucepan, cover with water, and boil on medium heat for 5 minutes, until soft. Put the oil in a large pan, add onions, and fry on medium heat until golden brown. Add ginger and garlic and fry for another 2 minutes. Add the salt and black pepper, mix together, and add tomatoes. Keep on medium heat, stir from time to time until all liquids dry and the oil separates (bhun). Add garam masala, stir in, and keep on a simmer. Add pre-boiled beans at this stage with 1/2 cup of water, simmer on low heat until all masalas are mixed in, cook on low heat covered for 2 - 4 minutes, and serve piping hot. Serve with naan or toast.

JAPAN
BY JENNY GOLDSBERRY
1 cup of white sticky rice 1 cup of water 2-3 snack-size sheets of seaweed 1 can of tuna 3 Tbsp. of mayo Pinch of salt Pinch of mayo Throw the rice in the rice cooker with the water. Drain the water out of the tuna and mix in your mayo. Sprinkle in your spices and mix that in as well. When the rice is done cooking, take it out with your hands. Dip your hands in salted water to keep the rice from sticking to your hands. You can either make your onigiri into a ball or into the traditional triangle shape. Finally, attach your seaweed while the rice is still warm, so it sticks better. You can eat it right then or pop it into the fridge for another day and eat it chilled.
