RYE BROOK PARKS AND RECREATION 2016 FALL ACTIVITIES
ONLINE REGISTRATION 1 BEGINS September 7, 2016 @ 9:30pm
Dear Rye Brook Resident: As the new school year is upon us so is a new recreation season. I hope this summer treated you well and that your recreation batteries are recharged. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to experience Recreation’s wide ranging activities for all ages. Popular Recreation programs include floor hockey, teen center, ice skating, bowling, men’s basketball and many other recreational activities to fit into your fall schedule. Rye Brook Recreation is offering a golf instruction program as well, which was new to our fall programming last year. This year, Rye Brook Recreation will be offering an After School for Kids program at Ridge St. School for all Ridge St. School students needing an extended day program. Coming in December is the Winterfest event to commence the holiday season. After School for Kids is an after school program at Ridge Street School. The typical after school program times will be from dismissal (approx. 3:10pm) until 6:30pm (pickups can occur at any time in between) and the times will be extended when shorter school days are scheduled in advance. As in the past, if your child is participating in a separate PTA or Recreation program at Ridge Street Elementary School during the after school program hours, Rye Brook Recreation staff will bring and return the children to these programs as well. For those not registered in any other alternative programs, the children will be busy with a variety of recreational activities. Rye Brook Recreation will be hosting a guest speaker on Tuesday, October 25th from 7:30 until 9:30pm at the Blind Brook High School Auditorium. Bob Bigelow, a former 4 year NBA Player and first round draft pick, will be addressing “Adults and Children in Organized Youth Sports; Who Wins, Who Loses?” . In his speech, he will address “From Unorganized to Organized - How Time Flies, Physical, Psychological and Emotional Age Appropriateness, Defining Ability and Talent and Can we do better?”. This lecture is geared toward our basketball program, however the general public is invited too, as the benefits from this presentation are more generic toward all youth sports. In memory of Paula Bertolacci, the 7th annual “Paula’s Pals” Coat Drive will take place from September 25th to December 9th to collect clean reusable coats for the needy. These coats will be distributed to the Carver Center and Holy Rosary Church where they will be distributed to our local needy neighbors. Paula’s goal before passing in January, five years ago, was to donate 150 coats to the needy. We hope to meet this goal again this year. Collection boxes will be located at the Rye Brook Recreation Department, Anthony J. Posillipo Center, Port Chester Middle School, Park Avenue School and Corpus Christi Church. The playground at Garibaldi Park is now completed and the basketball court at Pine Ridge Park will be color coated in August. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to try them out. Please note that Online registration will begin on Wednesday, September 7th at 9:30pm. I look forward to seeing you at some of our programs and hope that Rye Brook Recreation is meeting your recreational needs. Robert Bertolacci Parks & Recreation Superintendent 2

Bob Bigelow is one of the foremost lecturers in the country regarding the needs of children in youth sports, and using common-sense approaches to meet those needs. Bob is a former NBA first round draft choice and four-year player. He played collegiately at the University of Pennsylvania for Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Daly. He has devoted several thousand hours researching and lecturing about organized youth sports and its effects on children and adults. Since 1993, he has conducted over 600 talks throughout the country. This talk is educational, challenging, motivational and humorous. “The best talk I’ve ever heard on any subject,” said one listener. “I recommend to anyone who deals with the youth of America to spend one hour with Bob Bigelow,” said another. You are guaranteed to leave with a better understanding of what children really want and need from their sports activities. Bob has also written a book, Just Let the Kids Play (Health Communications, Inc.), that describes organized youth sports’ major systemic problems and offers many reforms for better changes. This book is being distributed throughout North America. Bob’s mission to put the youth back in youth sports has received widespread media attention-Sports Illustrated, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, WEEI-AM Radio (Boston), The Philadelphia Inquirer, New England Sports Network (NESN), WFAN-AM Radio (New York City), and Toronto Sun. As an adult involved in youth sports, ask yourself two questions; “Why do my kids play?” and “What are my motivations for being involved, or not?” Whether you are satisfied or uncomfortable with your answers, please attend this thought-provoking forum.
