From: Casey Berkowitz Subject: Opening Ceremonies To: Rye Country Day School
Rye Country Day, by definition, "is an independent, co-educational college preparatory school located in Rye, New York," But if you look around you. I'm sure you'll agree that RCDS is so much more than what is seems to be on paper. RCDS is a comfortable and safe place - here we are surrounded by people who love and genuinely want to learn, who are welcoming and warm, who are different from one another and yet succeed together, and who are always there to support each other. It is a place where we are challenged - where we can enroll in courses that prompt us to really think, and where we can learn how best to handle the unpredictable tasks we may face in the future. But above all else. Rye Country Day School is a place where we are encouraged to be our best selves. We are not looked down upon, but intead applauded for our individuality. We can express ourselves, develop our own interests, and discover who we really are and want to be. We students and faculty alike have been given an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of this Rye Country Day, the confortable, safe, challenging, and accepting school we call our own. It is our responsibility, therefore, to make the most out of what is has to offer. So I challenge you and invite you to be your best selves this year, to give back all the good we have been given. I challenge you to make five new friends, to say hello to at least one person in the halls each day to cheer on the Wildcats at three or more sports games, to ask a teacher what interests him or her outside these school walls, to lend three minutes to helping out a friend, and to really immerse yourself in and become a part of this community. There is a reason why we come to school every day to learn and exist together. It is so we can offer something of ourselves to our peers and we can discover that our peers will offer something of themselves in return. Collectively, as an amazing RCDS community, we will learn, we will grow, we will thrive, and we will enjoy in this new year.

Feature Stories ASSEMBLY IN HONOR OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING Members of the Rye Country Day School community shared their experiences with the values th a t Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so powerfully championed in his life. These values include hope, vision, compassion, justice, equality, love, courage, and community. Triston Ortiz on Hope: "And sitting before me, is hope. Hope, because each and everyone of you has the ability to take this amazing education and bring it with you wherever you go in life, disperse it across the nation and produce equal opportunity for all."

"[Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that, The ultim ate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people, but the silence over th a t by the good people.'" "Seek out issues of consequence on your own - for justice is an ideal so attractive I'm sure we all have at least a fragm ent of desire for it, and at most a vast longing for it." - Liam Dalton "Have the idea th a t no one has had yet - seek informed and honest opinions - disagree with others, but more im portantly disagree with yourself. Ponder, investigate, and take care to live up to the immense responsibility and opportunity afforded to our generation by the most trying of circumstances." - Liam Dalton

CAPTAINS' NOTE
The 2014 season was full of incredible accomplishments for the Wildcat football team. Along the way, we had great wins against league rivals. The team, unfortunately, experienced injuries to key players, but we were able to battle through them, and many young players were able to step up. The team is young and looking to make noice again next year, not only in FAAs but also in New Englands. Thank you for a great season. We could not have asked for a harder working group of men. -Rick Wallace, Eli Rattner, and Ryan Wolitzer

We are so proud of the team this year! Our schedule was much more competitive than past years, and we really stepped up to the plate. We had the unbelievable experience of being four time state champions, something that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Even more important than our record was the bond we formed as a team- we loved playing with all of you! We are so fortunate that the team is so close. Thank you guys for such an amazing season and can't wait to see what you guys do next year! Love, Sophie, Emily, Yana, and Zoe

Thank you guys for an amazing season. This year's team was characterized by passion and fun. In the end, although we came up short of the FAA championship this year, we left all that we had on the field each game and had a great time playing together. CAPTAINS' NOTE
This year was another amazing season for Girls Varsity Tennis. Despite not being in a league and having only six veteran players, GVT managed to make the most of every single match and completely revitalize the spirit on the courts. Challenged with a new emphasis on conditioning and fitness, the whole team rose to the occasion and finished the season in amazing form. But what really made this season so special was each player's enthusiasm and unique contribution to the team dynamic, and we couldn't have asked for a better group of girls. Love you all! xo Daphne and Izzy

CAPTAINS' NOTE In preseason, our cross-country team tackled long mileage days, hills, and tough workouts in the intense heat head-on, impressing the coaches from the very start. The younger runners showed a lot of potential, and the veterans improved and became even better leaders and role models. Despite suffering a lot of injuries early in the season, we've all been running exceptionally well, even taking home a victory for the men's team at Waveny Park. Although the veterans of the team are finishing the final races of their high school cross-country careers, the younger runners have reassured everyone that the future of the cross country team is in good hands with truly passionate and talented athletes. Good luck to the team next year and congrats on an awesome season! -Malcolm, Acacia, Melody, and Jackson

CAPTAINS' NOTE This season was one filled with many ups and downs. We started off very well, even boasting the best record in the league at one time. However, we struggled later into the season which led to our early exit from the playoffs. But this season was much more than about wins and iosses, because this team was a family. While accomplishments are important, they pale in comparison to the relationships formed on this team. We also had a enormous amount of school support for our team this year, which made every home game very exciting and helped us more than we ever thought. We would like to thank all the coaches, fans, and our manager, Emma, for a great season. It did not end in our favor, but i can say, that myself, Salim, and Jeremiah are very thankful for season we will never forget. #FOE -Vincent and Salim

This was an amazing season for our team as we came in 1st place in the FAA's. There was a great blend of five seniors along with some really talented underclassmen, so the future will be bright for GVB. Our coaches challenged us to work hard and hustle in practice, which translated to great teamwork and effort on the court. We are very proud of all that we have accomplished this season!!! xoxo, Nery and Tara

CAPTAINS' NOTE The boys hockey team had a rough start to the season, but once we got into a rhythm and started winning some games, we put ourselves in the position for two successful post-season runs. The highlight of our season was beating Portsmouth Abbey at home by scoring a goal with less than 40 seconds left in the game, clinching a spot in the Holt League Tournament. We also had exciting wins in the FAA and Holt League semifinals, overcoming a threegoal deficit to beat King and winning a close 1-0 game against a talented Moses Brown team. We unfortunately lost both game finals, but making it to two league finals was definitely a great accomplishment.

Girls' varsity squash has had an amazing season! After losing three seniors last year, we had some fantastic underclassman step up. Under the leadership of our coaches Alex Langerhorst and Katja Amir, we have pushed ourselves in practice to improve our racket skills and, most importantly, our fitness on court. Our hard work paid off with some rewarding wins. This great group of girls has come together for an exceptional season! -Yana and Caroline

Girls Varsity Foil had a great season this year, and with a 13-1 record, we earned the top spot as ISFL League Champions again for the 2014-2015 year. As my senior year concludes, I would like to acknowledge the journey that was the past four years. It is easy to see graduation as the door to our long-awaited futures, but those futures would not be so great if we had not been so successfully inspired and educated at RCDS. Accordingly, I would like to thank everyone who supported me and helped me open the door to the next chapter in my life. I could not have completed these years as smoothly as I had without that support. Mom and D a d -1am so glad that I have you two as my parents! I am so grateful for your unconditional love and kindness. Words cannot describe how happy I am to have you both in my life. Laura and A le x -1love you both, and I love how close we have become in the past few years. I know that you two will always be a friend to me regardless of any physical distance. I am so happy to have you two in my life! 1could not have enjoyed high school as much as I did without such good friends to make the days easier and the months go by more quickly. I knew that you were all there for me whenever I was frustrated or upset, and I am forever grateful for that company. I know that we will always be close no matter the distance. My teachers-1 cannot express how grateful I am to have had such wonderful and influential teachers. Every teacher I have had at Rye was spectacular and always willing to help me reach my goals. I could not have learned as much as I had without them. I would also like to specifically thank Mrs. Ordway for working with me on my Independent Study and introducing me to Art History. I am so happy that I had you as my teacher. My pets- This one is pretty self-explanatory. Stay golden, babies. Best,

I
have some thanks to give.
ill Entering as a 4th grader from what seemed to be a different world I could , never have Imagined the opportunity and potential in the RCDS community. I would like to thank each and every person at RCDS who inspired me—who pushed me beyond my lim its to discover the person th at I could be, be them friends, mentors, whoever. Thank you for challenging me to be a better me. ijfhank you Mom and Dad. By raising me you mastered the art of nagging and negotiation all in support of my future. Even when I insisted on facing ^^.difficulties by myself, you guys stubbornly assisted me and taught me the value of family. I hope th a t I might have accidentally absorbed some of your wisdom. (
Thank you to my brother Tyler. You constantly provided me with a goal and something to work up to. Even when you were away at school, you always helped me to keep my eyes focused on what was ahead of me and not what was too far ahead and behind me. Thank you for being not ju st my brother and loyal friend, but for being my guide even when I didn’t realize I was lost.
I may not have pictures, videos, or Snapchats to remember my time spent jgrowing up, but I will forever retain these lasting memories of my childhood, don’t want my “thank you” to become stale, but I still feel that I need to liisay it one more time. Thank you to everyone throughout my life up to this jpoint who has supported me. May your futures be graced with even greater (fortune and kindness than what has been provided to me.
