Headmaster’s Prize recipients, from left, William Shabecoff ’19, Julian Martelly ’19, and Patricia Bautista ’19 with Mr. Nelson.

Patricia Bautista ’19 After graduating from Rye Country Day School last spring, Patricia matriculated at Swarthmore College, where she plans to pursue a double major in political science and sociology with hopes for a career in education and community service. She joined RCDS in the ninth grade and spent four years in a broad range of studies and leadership activities. A year ago, Patricia honed her interest in education by teaching an eight-week mathbased summer course to grade school students in Washington Heights through Rye Country Day’s Edward E. Ford Foundation Community Engagement Fellowship Program. This past summer, she was a history counselor, teaching seventh graders in the Oliver Scholars Program in New York City. An engaged member of the RCDS community, Patricia was a lead mentor in the Students of Color Mentoring Program, a co-founder of UPLIFT, a new mentoring program that includes Lower School students, and a member of the Peer Leadership program in which she taught leadership skills to ninth graders. She was also a founding leader of the Poetic Literature of the Urban Generation Club, president of the Photography Club, and a member of the Gay Straight Alliance. She played on the basketball and softball teams, acted in the 2019 spring musical, and served three years on the theater stage crew. In the summer of 2017, she studied political science and creative writing in Barnard College’s Pre-College Program. She also attended The American Civil Liberties Union’s 2017 Summer Advocacy Institute. At RCDS, Patricia was known as a brilliant poet, often performing her spoken word at Upper School gatherings to the amazement of her peers and teachers. Patricia won the Oberlin College and Brown University Book Awards, the RCDS Photography Award, and a gold medal in the 2018 Spanish Awards. In April, she was honored with a Certificate of Accomplishment by the New York City Committee for the Princeton Prize in Race Relations for her demonstrated commitment to advancing race relations within the greater RCDS community. She also excelled in eight Advanced Placement exams and represented Rye Country Day at several conferences on advocacy, diversity, and sustainability. Patricia enjoys writing poetry, reading a broad range of books, and exploring the city, particularly for street photography.

Julian Martelly ’19 Julian hopes to become an entrepreneur after graduating from Dartmouth College, where he plans to major in economics with a minor in philosophy. He entered RCDS in the tenth grade and was a club leader, an athlete, a singer and performer, and a community worker. He excelled in seven Advanced Placement courses in three years and particularly enjoyed studying the humanities and Spanish. A bass singer, he was a member of the school choir and Bro Canto, the boys’ honor choir. In his senior year, he played the lead role of Caldwell B. Cladwell in the School’s production of “Urinetown.” Julian was a sprinter, hurdler, and middle-distance runner on the track and field team. As a senior, he captained the team and set a school record of 49.72 seconds in the 400-meter run. His team was the 2019 Fairchester Athletic Association champion and won 4

the New York State Association of Independent Schools title in 2018 and 2019. Julian also played three years as a safety and running back on the football team, which won its league championship in 2018. He was vice president of the RCDS Student Government in 2017, a leader of the Students of Color Mentoring Program, a Peer Leader, and a head of The Veterans Club. He also represented Rye Country Day at the National Association for Independent Schools Student Diversity Leadership Conference and attended the Brown University Pre-College Program. Julian has worked in a number of community food programs. He volunteered in his Yonkers hometown library helping children read and spent nine days in the Dominican Republic helping bring water to an underprivileged town. As an Edward E. Ford Foundation Community Engagement Fellow, Julian helped to improve New Way Garden in White Plains by boosting its social media presence and creating a wheelchair-accessible, raised flowerbed. In 2018, Julian was the winner of the RCDS James P. Godfrey Award for community service.

William Shabecoff ’19 William has chosen Stanford University to continue his studies, and his anticipated curriculum includes music, math, and computer science. Although he does not forecast a career in music, William is an accomplished musician, playing the piano and violin and concentrating on composition. He entered RCDS in the ninth grade and concurrently attended Saturday classes in Julliard’s Pre-College Division. At RCDS, William’s record was characterized by academic, artistic, and athletic achievement as well as meaningful community service. He was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, a Yale Book Award winner, and a two-time silver medalist in the National French Contest. He excelled in 11 Advanced Placement courses and was named an AP Scholar. He was also a member of the Political Forum. William was a four-year member of the wrestling team, serving as captain in his senior year. In 2016, he won second place in the New York State Association of Independent Schools championship. He was also twice awarded honorable mention in the Fairchester Athletic Association tournament. Actively purpose-driven, William raised bees and contributed the proceeds of honey sales to the National Resource Defense Council. He also performed in community concerts at senior centers. As an Edward E. Ford Foundation Community Engagement Fellow, he taught math to pre-school students in a Head Start program in Port Chester. William has performed throughout the United States and in Japan. Julliard, Carnegie Hall, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and RCDS, of course, are just a few of the venues he has played. Past concerts and competitions include the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, a Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists composition program, the National Young Composers Challenge, and the Tribeca New Music Division 2 Young Composer Competition, where he was recognized as an emerging composer.
