A meeting of minds Jewellery designer and owner of jewellery store Modern Relics, Alix Blüh is known for her precious pieces, created to last into the future while having their roots in the past. She lives in San Francisco with her boyfriend, photographer Michael Jang, in a 1908 house bursting with style, elegance and creativity.

ABOVE Alix bought this gorgeous colour photograph in its distressed frame from a funky old used bookstore in San Francisco.

THESE PAGES This room has an industrial feel, softened by the dried flowers. ‘I love bringing nature into the house, especially because we live so close to the Golden Gate Park but have no green in our own backyard. I’m always allured by the mosses that grow year round on the trees and love having them in our house,’ Alix explains.

Opposite TOP LEFT Donna’s love for pattern and colour is evident in these

three samples of her bright and soft knitted scarves. TOP CENTRE A crate painted in blue creates a perfect space to store reels of vibrant yarn, tools and a friendly cat. TOP RIGHT Donna’s recognizable faces are made into little leather purses and sit here between sheets of branded stickers and catalogues. CENTRE LEFT There are two knitting machines in the studio in a small side room. Freshly knitted pieces gather in a cosy pile. CENTRE A wall is filled with Donna’s ever-growing iconic collection of soft toy creatures and trees, creating a cute display. CENTRE RIGHT These boxes, made from oak-edged laminated plywood, were originally used to display Donna’s wares at trade shows.

BOTTOM LEFT A cute cardboard cutout of one of Donna’s

creatures in green sits in a little corner prompting smiles. BOTTOM CENTRE Donna’s painted wooden people are gathered

together to create a colourful arrangement above the rows of filing. BOTTOM RIGHT Piles of new-season fox scarves are finished and waiting to have their tags sewn on before leaving the studio.

Above The white walls of Donna’s light-filled studio are her blank canvas. ‘They let me think,’ she explains. ‘I love colour but prefer to add accents of strong, bright colour by using patterned textiles.’

Making colours sing Artist and designer Sarah Hamilton lives in a stylish Mid-Century Modern house in a leafy corner of South East London with her husband and son. The house is situated close to Dulwich Woods, where Sarah enjoys living in her country oasis amongst the bustling city. Sarah and her husband lovingly restored this house with a deep respect for the vision the architect originally had for it. ‘Houses are very precious,’ explains Sarah, ‘and they are only yours for a period of time, so it is important to respect and love them.’

THESE PAGES This delightful corner of the living room demonstrates Sarah’s love of pattern, colour and design. The white walls provide a clean backdrop for treasures from her travels and large prints. These are combined with brightly coloured rugs and cushions to make this an inspiring space.
