Father’s Day
Greetings from Marika... Bonjour et bienvenue to our summer edition of Bert’s Innings. A warm welcome to our new residents, families and friends of Bert Sutcliffe. We’re only a few months away from Christmas! It is almost two years since we welcomed our first residents in October 2016. We are excited for the opening of our Crowe apartments, our final independent apartment block. So we will soon wave goodbye to our hard-working construction crew. We are looking forward to some great events including; Oktoberfest celebrations, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker, Remembrance Day, and the Dame Malvina Major Foundation concert. Don’t forget to check out our monthly activities calendar!
We are already busy planning our Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. I was in Canada last year for the holidays, so I am looking forward to enjoying some sunshine and the beach this year. Please feel free to come and see me, or any member of our team, if you would like to know more about our wonderful village or if you have any feedback. Kind regards,
Marika Laflamme Village Manager
Bowl’s season! We are very excited to see our bowling green taking shape in the middle of the village. The fantastic open space, which is surrounded by our beautiful gardens, will be the perfect spot to play during the summer months. Who knows, we might challenge our sister villages to a bowls championship! Leanne and Rosalind

Bloomin’ marvellous! With four generations of gardening expertise behind her, Kate Hillier is certainly a fitting person to be events director for the New Zealand Flower and Garden Show, which runs from 28 November – 2 December. Englishwoman Kate told an audience gathered in the village centre at Bert Sutcliffe how the Hillier family had grown into a garden centre brand and quality plant stockist worthy of a Royal Warrant, all stemming from her great great grandfather Edwin
Hillier’s humble beginnings opening a small nursery in Winchester in 1864. The company has also long been associated with the Chelsea Flower Show, racking up 73 consecutive gold medals, which makes it the most successful exhibitor in the show’s history. Kate was thrilled to meet resident Jillian Browne who helped set up the original Ellerslie Flower Show 25 years ago, which was modelled on the Chelsea event. If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.
also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’
Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”
Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.
Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was
myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

My serviced apartment is very comfortable, well maintained, the meals are delicious, and there are many great activities in the village. Moving to Bert Sutcliffe village after almost 60 years in Rotorua was a major decision but I have no regrets.

International Month
Spring celebrations
International Month was all about celebrating our diverse cultures. We dressed up and held a pot luck lunch to showcase all the different types of cuisine. Our Village Manger, Marika (far right), dressed up in traditional Indian clothes to celebrate with us.
For spring our serviced apartment residents celebrated with a lovely fine dining lunch. The room was decorated with beautiful floral colours and flower centrepieces. Residents enjoyed a delicious meal accompanied by a glass of wine.

Father’s Day
Upcoming events
Father’s Day at the village is always very special. The serviced apartment residents celebrated the day with a delicious barbeque along with a cold beer. Burgers and sausages were on the menu, which proved to be very popular as there were none left at the end! Meanwhile in the resthome and hospital, Father’s Day was celebrated with delicious pizza. The residents also enjoyed having their families celebrating the day with them, and many stayed long after to spend quality time together.
