Bob’s Banter
Greetings from Cathy... Hello and welcome to the first edition of Bob’s Banter for 2018. I hope you have settled in well to the new year, and had a relaxing break with family and friends. We have had some amazing events over the past few months. The highlight for me was the carols sung by the Wainuiomata Choir. The choir sang beautifully and it created a fantastic Christmas atmosphere in the village. I would also like to congratulate our Bob Scott bowling team who won the Ryman lower North Island competition prior to Christmas, winning a trip to Melbourne. They had a fantastic time in Australia. Well done Arie, Reta, Shirley and Ron. We are really proud of you!
Another highlight was our cartoon themed children’s party. It was a glorious summer day and it was fantastic to meet some more families. Until next time, take care and I look forward to seeing you around the village. Kind regards,
Cathy Hiku Village Manager

bowlers take on Melbourne While most of us were sleeping off our Christmas feasts on Boxing Day, four of our residents were heading to Melbourne. The winners of the Ryman lower North Island regional bowls tournament, Arie Molenaar, Shirley Wilson, Ron Scott and Reta Morris, were eager to take on Australian bowlers in the Ryman $12,000 Christmas Bowls Carnival held b. at the Glen Waverley Bowling club.
They all agree that having a bowling green in a village is fantastic as it brings people together. “A lot of people go there just to sit and talk there. It’s a social spot,”Arie says. “Sometimes we’re there for half an hour and we don’t play bowls, we just talk!” “We’re just so proud to be part of Ryman.”
“The atmosphere was brilliant. There was a lot of interest in us and people asking how we were doing.” The team also enjoyed their visit to Ryman’s Weary Dunlop village where h they had a tour and morning tea with the residents.

Our Children’s Party at Bob Scott was a blast with resident’s family and friends having a spectacular time. It was our second annual children’s party, and like last year we had some great activities for everyone to enjoy. Children raced cars, fished for ducks, played slap the rat four times in a row, and many more games put together by our wonderful activities team.

Staff also got in on the act by dressing up as Tinkerbell and Peter Pan, and we had several children in costume too! Our afternoon races have now become tradition, so we will definitely have it again! It was a relaxing day, full of fun and laughter. We loved seeing the residents and children enjoy themselves so much.
Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship. The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family. Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch. Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family. “The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’ Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of
Ryman director Mike Cashin. Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner. “We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy. She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’ The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Resident Esma Rastrick with New Zealand Women’s Weekly editor Alice O’Connell
The hunt for fantastic grandparents is on! Ryman Healthcare has joined forces with New Zealand Women’s Weekly magazine in the search for the nation’s Grandparents of the Year. To help launch this year’s search, Ryman invited magazine editor Alice O’Connell and her team to a lavish high tea at its Bert Sutcliffe retirement village where residents gave them a very warm welcome.
“With so many wonderful grandparents amongst our residents alone I just know choosing the winners is going to be extremely tough – I will have my tissues at the ready too!”

Radio presenter Lorna Subritzky, was the MC for the event.

“With more mothers working and under so much pressure it’s grandparents who end up picking up the slack either with childcare or financially - they are the unsung heroes,” she said.

“So we need to celebrate these people and say they’re doing something wonderful.” Alice said more judges had been brought on board to choose each category winner this year, including Ryman’s own Group Sales Manager Debbie McClure, who grew up living next door to her grandparents. “I know from first-hand experience just how special the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren can be and I’m thrilled that Ryman is involved with New Zealand Women’s Weekly to celebrate that.
The four categories are: Gran of the Year, Granddad of the Year, Honorary Grandparent of the Year (to recognise those who may not be bloodrelated but whose love is no less strong), and Grandparents of the Year. Closing date for entries is Sunday March 4, 2018. The competition is open to Ryman Residents.

Introducing Paula Franklin Hello, my name is Paula Franklin and I am the second cook in the Bob Scott kitchen. I have been cooking in the care industry for 21 years. I love helping the residents and cooking healthy food for a healthy mind. You need a variety of skills when catering for so many people and their individual needs! I was born in Upper Hutt and I have lived in the Hutt all my life. I have been married to my husband David for 35 years and we have a 26-year-old daughter, Shannon. My husband owns a limousine hiring company. I even arranged for a limo to pick up staff for our Christmas party!
In my spare time I enjoy sewing, craft work, gardening and taking my dogs, Cesar and Foxy, for walks. My dogs belong to a small dogs social group, which meets up monthly at the McKewan Park in Petone. I also enjoy travelling and have been to the USA, Australia and Rarotonga. ock c n a H s y Meet Glad Hello, my name is Gladys Hancock. I was born and lived in Christchurch before moving to windy Wellington after the big quakes. I loved Christchurch, especially in the spring. The banks of the Avon River were always beautiful to see. I moved to Wellington to be closer to my nephew and his family. I recently celebrated a very special birthday, my 100th birthday! We celebrated this
For Fo my birthday we celebrated in the vi village dining room. Everyone sang Happy Birthday and we had a slice of H m birthday cake. It was really lovely. my My M room is now decorated in cards and balloons and I even received cards from ba th Prime Minister, the Governor General the and an the Queen! My husband and I never had children. We owned a milk bar and a grocery store in Christchurch after World War II. I like living at Bob Scott and I feel very lucky to live in such a nice place. I visited someone in a resthome sometime after the war and they had to share rooms and only had a curtain divider! Things have definitely improved and progressed since those days. I currently live in my serviced apartment, and it is fantastic to still have a bit of my independence. I look forward to the next 100 years in this village!

Carol service December was a very busy time at the village with all the Christmas festivities. One highlight was the candlelight carol service. The village centre was decorated with Christmas lights and lanterns, and packed with eager residents. The Wainuiomata Choir started their tour of the village in the resthome and hospital before visiting special care residents, and then performing in the village centre. Residents sang along to the well-known carols and gave a loud cheer after the finale. Afterwards, everyone took delight in delicious Christmas mince pies and bubbles; a perfect way to end the evening!
