Village quiz

Up the coast to Otaki

Greetings from Cathy... Hello and welcome to our summer edition of Bob’s Banter. After a long winter, we are looking forward to spring and summer. The mornings are now noticeably lighter, which is perfect for an early morning walk. It has been a busy few months at the village. We held our Wellness Month with several exciting and engaging activities. Staff popped in and out of the Triple A classes, and there were great challenges such as quizzes and mind benders. We also celebrated International Month. Our village was colourfully decorated, and staff created dishes from a number of countries for this fabulous cultural festival. The highlight for me was our concert in the village centre, where our

staff also performed. I am very proud of everyone involved, including our hardworking activities team. Looking ahead, we are excited for Oktoberfest as well as celebrating the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker. Until next time take care, stay well, and I look forward to seeing you out and about in our beautiful village. Kind regards, g ,

WOW! Look at us For Bob Scott’s inaugural wearable arts showcase, residents and staff created an amazing array of costumes using coffee cups, chocolate wrappers, bubble-wrap and many more everyday items!

Spring is in the air With the warmer days Bob Scott is abuzz with residents and their guests making use of the café. We’ve also held several informative and fun events, such as the Scam Savvy seminar, which was attended by over 80 people (pictured). If you are interested in joining in these events, please let us know.

The independent apartment crafting group worked on most of the creations, and Activities Coordinator Terri Taylor thought up many ideas for the designs. The participation of the village was incredible. Many chocolates were eaten for the greater good of the show!

Debbie and Sharon

A raised plywood catwalk was expertly made by residents Stephen Fearnley and Norm Dalziel, while Kerry Mongan played the drums with Faye Cook on piano.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

to London. Rory was born in London and lived there throughout the war. At 11 years old, his family immigrated to New Zealand and he grew up in Hawkes Bay. Rory attended the University of Wellington and also trained as a teacher. He taught geography, English and science. Marie and Rory met on a camping trip in Turkey. The couple hit it off and after just three weeks were engaged. A few months later they tied the knot. Soon they welcomed three children; Michael, Sean and Katherine. Today the couple are grandparents to five grandchildren and will welcome their sixth grandchild this December. A few years ago, Marie suffered a stroke and as a consequence, Marie and Rory started to look at their options for the future. They decided to move to Bob Scott in 2016 – it was close enough to family and had fantastic facilities.

The couple hit it off and after just three weeks were engaged.

For Marie and Rory O’Connor, living in their threebedroom independent apartment at Bob Scott has been a blessing. Marie, a retired teacher, was born in Hunter Valley, Australia. At 25 years old, the language teacher decided to travel for a couple of years and headed

Ballet Season

Father’s Day

Our special care residents are very excited for the upcoming Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker. They have already started to make some decorations with papier-mâché. We can’t wait to see the end results!

To celebrate Father’s Day our independent and serviced apartment residents spent time together reminiscing with lots of laughter, chatter and fantastic hot dogs. We hope everyone had a lovely time.

The couple are still very active in the village, and enjoy participating in activities such as Triple A, Fine Dining and joining in on the quizzes. One of their favourite spots is the village café where they often take friends and family for a coffee and cake. They are happy to call Bob Scott home.

Introducing Lila

Inter-village Quiz Bob Scott hosted the inter-village quiz this year after taking home the trophy from Shona McFarlane last year.

I was born in Kenya and moved to the UK in 1970. In 1981, we immigrated to New Zealand and I eventually married my husband, Bharat. We have a son, Vijay.

This year, our residents competed against residents from Charles Fleming, Malvina Major, Rita Angus and Shona McFarlane. There were the usual general knowledge questions and many more questions on pop culture. It was a close competition with only three points between the top and bottom teams. We are proud to say that Bob Scott’s team are the champions for another year! Hello, my name is Lila Patel and I have been working at Bob Scott for 15 months.

A truly great place to work.

I have been privileged to be able to travel and have visited Australia, Singapore, Dubai and Brunei. I enjoy meeting new people and discovering new places.

Bob’s Banter | 7

When I am not working, I enjoy walking, sewing, cooking and spending quality time with my family. At the village, I work as both a laundry assistant and dining assistant. I really enjoy the variety of the job as everyone here is friendly and kind. A truly great place to work. What I love most about working at Bob Scott is meeting the residents from different nationalities and cultures and hearing their stories.

Up the coast to Otaki!

Upcoming events

Several of our independent residents recently travelled up the coast for a day trip to Otaki. The small town has some excellent shops and after a quick browse we headed back to the van to continue our trip to Palmerston North. Once there we had a delicious lunch at Nero Restaurant. We had high expectations as Nero Restaurant had won Restaurant of the Year in 2017, and we were definitely not disappointed! After a sumptuous lunch we headed to the Celtic Winery on the shores of Lake Horowhenua. Our residents learned about the winery and of course tasted the wines. Everyone enjoyed the day immensely. Pictured: Our residents thought lunch at Nero Restaurant was the highlight of the trip.
